View Full Version : Hail mTony Gunawan & Chandra
I want to start this trade for patriotic Inas
to praise their over the hill players Tony and Chandra fr
thrashing the World Champs.
I think too much energy has been spent making excuses for obvious losses,
so for a change let's start praising these really talented Indonesians
and strike some balance!
So c'mon.
phaarix 10-16-2006, 06:22 AM Congratulations Tony and Candra, a very well deserved win at the JO2006! It's a real pity that they couldn't play in the WC :(.
Malaysianfan 10-16-2006, 07:02 AM Hats off to them. How can they maintain such standard after playing so many years! Indonesia has always produced great and legendary double pairs. Hopefully the young INA pairs can keep this going.
LazyBuddy 10-16-2006, 07:19 AM I think the NSS is a perfect fit for Tony, as it takes less physical needs (shorter duration), but requires superior mental strength. Great to see Tony and Chandra still can maintain such a level after these many years. ;)
kokcheng 10-16-2006, 08:15 AM They are true craftsmen of their trade. They take pride in their calling. They respect each other and their combination was superb.Malaysian players have much to learn from this evergreen pair. One crucial lesson Malaysian pairs must understand is not to battle against three players in a game.
Saaaay,
Why no fanatical support from INa?
people will think they are not Indonesians at all!
People in Msia even support Taufik!
Surely Tony has similar star qualities.
What happened to the past practice of Rudy Rudy
Swie King, Swie King?
So much has changed, its all abt making excuses fr losers not praising winners.
cao ci dan 10-16-2006, 10:36 AM Hats off to them. How can they maintain such standard after playing so many years! Indonesia has always produced great and legendary double pairs. Hopefully the young INA pairs can keep this going.

;) :p ...and congrads for beating MY favourite pair in the final in just 23 minutes!:crying: :)
shamoon 10-16-2006, 10:53 AM I think Tony and Chandra is the best MD pair right now, even though they are older pair, but, have lots of experience and they can read their opponent's game and can change the game with their experience and techniques.
z3048018 10-16-2006, 11:25 AM the way they have been playing, they should take a majority of the titles in 2007 (and obviously in 2006). they are a much welcomed addition and MD has just gotten better!!
Dreamzz 10-16-2006, 11:37 AM it's a shame for sigit i guess that candra decided to quit, but i'm really glad to see that he's doing so well with tony. definitely one of my favourite pairs still playing at the moment ...
Baderz_Jas 10-16-2006, 11:43 AM agree...:D congratulations Tony/Chandra for beating my fav pair in 25 mins!!:crying:
me too :crying: congrats :crying: :D they are so good! :crying: :p
cooler 10-16-2006, 11:44 AM me too :crying: congrats :crying: :D they are so good! :crying: :p
LOL, i really like to see your real face on this one.
DoublesPlayer 10-16-2006, 11:57 AM Congrats, they are like Michael Jordan in badminton, they set the higher standard for Mens Doubles ...
I hope they can play at the 2008 Olympics somehow, they could still win it once more.
Qidong 10-16-2006, 12:02 PM I hope they can play at the 2008 Olympics somehow, they could still win it once more.
Candra represents Indonesia, but Tony represents USA, I wonder if they can team up and play in the Olympic?
But I wish they can win the WC next year. I guess there is no rule saying that 2 players representing 2 different countries can't play in the WC. They are the best team right now. And it prove that the current young MD's still can't catch the level of Tony/Chandra, Rexy/Ricky and Kim/Ha yet.
cooler 10-16-2006, 12:04 PM Candra represents Indonesia, but Tony represents USA, I wonder if they can team up and play in the Olympic? :confused:no they can't. IOC dont raise dual flags and don't play dual anthems:p
Baderz_Jas 10-16-2006, 12:17 PM LOL, i really like to see your real face on this one.
hehe :D you will see me if you come to AE07! :D :p
xt6666 10-16-2006, 12:28 PM Just watched the Japan Open MD final...
Tony and Candra playing so smart...
Nobody had a chance to beat them in this tournament and I think they can play even better in the next tournaments.
bananaboy 10-16-2006, 12:33 PM Tony Gunawan is just so dominant and when he partners with Candra... = TOO GOOD!!! If you pay close attention to Tony's movement on court and learn from him, you will definitely be a much better doubles' player. At least from the formation and strategy perspective.
xt6666 10-16-2006, 01:00 PM Would like to see a match against Eriksen/Lundgaard...
Also an "old pair"...
ctjcad 10-16-2006, 01:19 PM ...En-core!! (drum beats) En-core!! (drum beats) En-core!! (drum beats)...in the China Open...I'm sure the fans there(as well as us in here) will be delighted to see them play there...;) :) :D

Tony/Chandra is the best MD pair of this generation...No doubt!!!
fabcargo 10-16-2006, 08:55 PM Congrats to them and deep in my heart i feel very happy for them. I am happy because they now earn fully their prize money which is good for their retirement. After so much they have put into the game and for their country, now is their time to reap the benefit for themselves.
The reason I am saying this is because too many ex players in Indonesia are now living very poorly and not taken care by the country which is very sad.
Also consider these facts about Tony and Chandra :
- both of them are married with its own commitments and duties
- both of them train on their own and never as a pair
- they only train about 3 times a week max due to their jobs duties
- the only time they spend together on court is on game day at the tournaments
amazing but true...TRUE PROFESSIONAL AMBASSADORS OF THE GAME!!!!!!!!!
smashmouth 10-16-2006, 10:39 PM If you pay close attention to Tony's movement on court and learn from him, you will definitely be a much better doubles' player. At least from the formation and strategy perspective.
That's why I taped their match.
Tony & Candra simply the best.
cooler 10-16-2006, 10:53 PM I first saw candra W. in 1994 at the canadian open.
Back then, he was quiet, calm, and composed. When his parnter made a beginner type boo boo that got the whole audience laughing, candra calmed his partner and both resumed play. His play was basic but consistent. He has the jumpsmash back then but not as high as it is now. They beat the MAL pair to take the title.

Bobatea 10-17-2006, 10:39 AM I find both Tony and Candra to be "simple" players. By simple, I mean that they don't do trick shots whatsoever. Tony and Candra are consistent and usually know exactly where to put the shot. They of course do occassionally make mistakes(they are human... for the most part ;) ), but most of the time they play like they're watching themselves from a birds eye view. They know exactly where they are on court and what their partner is doing and will do. I guess Tony and Candra knowing where to put it and being consistent is in it's own right tricky because the opponent is trying to figure out where that weak spot is and ends up confusing himself :p .
I like Park Joo Bong too who is also considered a legend. I like seeing how Park Joo Bong and Tony Gunawan are legends from two different competing generations, and at how both acknowledge that they are the strongest (Park acknowledges Tony and likewise). Their play style seems similar to as in both Park and Gunawan were strongest up front at the net(correct me if I'm wrong about Park. I'm second guessing because Park was also considered a legend for mixed doubles, which is more a mid-back court game for the guy).
Both of them are really very simple.. i agree. And they are very humble and down to earth. They may look fierce and competitive on court. But right after the game they are back to their normal self. Weather they win or lose. Very nice chatting with them.
ctjcad 10-17-2006, 06:45 PM hmm, i don't know if this thread should be moved also to the Professional Players sub-forum??..
ricksakti 10-18-2006, 10:41 AM The best and Most 'ciamik' player in Badminton. Salute from their fans here in Thailand. Hey i got Tony's Signature when he played in Thai Open.
masterwong01 10-19-2006, 01:38 AM Congrats to Candra n Tony!! gambatte!!!
virusvoodoo 10-19-2006, 11:51 AM Congrats to Candra n Tony!! gambatte!!!
Wow, with just four tournaments Tony Gunawan & Candra Wijiya have already climbed to the 18th spot in world men's doubles ranking. If they continue to dominate in big tournaments like this I bet that they would only need seven or eight tournaments to reach number one spot.

masterwong01 10-19-2006, 11:56 AM hope to see them to compete in more tournaments in the future..why they are not competing in china open if i'm not mistaken?
Ants0600 10-19-2006, 02:19 PM Hopefully, all of us can see Tony / Chandra in WC, AE, OG, and other international badminton tournament.
Maybe, the best way 2 make that happens is 2 make Chandra Wijaya goes 2 USA, become citizen of USA, and play badminton there (4 USA 2). Therefore, they can play all international badminton tournament freely (as many as they want). :)

I think that's what everybody here in the US wants but I think it is very unlikely as Candra has to manage his business in Indonesia. This is his priority; badminton for him, Tony Gunawan, and Halim is just for fun now! :crying:
cooler 10-19-2006, 02:39 PM that is what so amazing about those guys (CW, TG, HH), moonlighting as a badminton champs, they still have day jobs:p
