Hello All,

I am playing with the idea of starting a badminton league with team competitions. I have come across a couple of team formats, I was wondering if everyone could post any team formats you have come across.

Women's only league: California Community College Women's Badminton Competition.
Round 1
Singles Doubles
1v2 1v2
2v1 2v1
3v4 3v3
4v3
5v6
6v5
Round 2
1v1 1v1
2v2 2v2
3v3
4v4
5v5
6v6

Summary- Matches usually last 2 - 2.5 hours. Singles matches worth 1 team point, Doubles matches worth 2 team points, except for 3v3 doubles. Total of 21 team points possible, 11 points required to win the team competition.

California C.O.A. Badminton High School Team competition (co-ed). A player can play Mixed and either singles or doubles. A player can not play both singles and doubles (no WS and WD, etc.).
Mixed MS WS MD WD
1v1 1v2 1v2 1v2 1v2
2v2 2v1 2v1 2v1 2v1
3v3

second round
MS WS MD WD
1v1 1v1 1v1 1v1
2v2 2v2 2v2 2v2

Summary - Matches usually last 3 hours. Each match is worth 1 team point for a total of 19 points. A team has to win 10 matches to win the team competition. The advantage is that it really doesn't matter if a team lies and places its #2 team in a #1 spot. EXCEPT for Mixed doubles. Where unfortunately some team place #1 mixed team in a second or third slot to ensure that win:eek: .

I was looking for a system for a team to have a minimum of 4 guys 2 girls, and a maximum of 6 guys and 4 girls per team. Also, I was looking for a match to last around 1.5 hours. Or to start things off, I should not mandate men or women, but rather make teams have female players?

Any suggestions?

I forgot to ask,

How exactly are the Thomas and Uber cups setup?

I finally found somthing on the Thomas and Uber cup (i can't believe that the ibf website doesn't have any links for this information  ).

The team championship is set up with three singles matches and two doubles matches.

Singles
1v1
2v2
3v3

Doubles
1v1
2v2

Does anyone know how the IBF determines 1,2,3 ranking for each country? Do they just use IBF rankings?

Different Ideas I have been playing with (I think you will see that I don't like to play singles he he):

Choice A
One match for all events, Msingles, Wsingles, Mdoubles, Wdoubles MX doubles. A team only needs 2 men and 2 women.

Plus side- evereyone gets at least two matches. I only need two courts, and the team match will last only 1.5 hours (using rally scoring).

Down side- Teams are small. No drama with changing up team lineup

Choice B
two doubles teams for men and women, one singles team and one mixed team.
Doubles
MD1v2 WD1v2
MD2v1 WD2v1
MS1v1 WS 1v1
MD1v1 WD 1v1
MD 2v2 WD 2v2
MxD 1v1

Plus Side- More matches, more drama, more team lineup possibilities.

Down side- Each team requires a minimum of 4 girls and 4 guys. Must have 4 badminton courts (to finish in 2 hours).

Choice C
Doubles only League
MD 1v2 WD 1v2
MD 2v1 WD 2v1
MxD 1v1
MD 1v1 WD 1v1
MD 2v2 WD 2v2

Plus side- minimum of 4 guys and girls. Medium matches for medium drama. Can finish 1.5 hours. Everyone gets at least two matches.
Down side- need 4 courts

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or do you just do not care for this?

Well I have thought up of another format which would be the easiest to organize.

Each team will have three doubles teams. A minimum of 2 girls must play. so that would mean two mixed teams or two men's doubles teams and one women's doubles team.

Each team will play round robin and play every other team.
1v3
2v1
3v2

1v2
2v3
3v1

1v1
2v2
3v3

However, no one has really replied to any of these league/team matches. Is it because you just think this is a dumb idea?

The reason why I was looking to organizing leagues, is that way people don't have to give up an entire weekend for a tournament. But rather people would only have to give up 3 hours per weekend, and with this format, everyone is guaranteed three matches.

What does anyone else think????

Toddster - we have been running the American Badminton League (ABL) here in the midwest since 1998 - the format is co-ed and requires a minimum of two men and two women, and it's been very popular - in fact, we are planning to expand it nationwide at other colleges in the coming years

We are also planning on starting a professional league, using the same format, on the West Coast in the summer of 2008

Check out the web site at www.americanbadmintonleague.com (http://www.americanbadmintonleague.com) and let me know if you have any questions - either on the board here, or feel free to email me (you can do so from the web site)

We're looking for team owners in the following cities: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle. If anyone on the board has any recommendations for team owners, please let me know - thanks! Donn
