Yes, China is not sending their best players to Denmark Open because they want to concentrate on the Asian Games. But I am sure you will still provide us with good photos, especially the guys in this forum want to see Wang Lin...:p

what??
but they have 25 days between the DO and the AG.
and that's if they reach the finals, otherwise it'll be even longer.
i don't see why they can't compete in both, unless they don't wanna mess up the training.

what happened to gunawan/wijaya or wijaya/budiarto?Yes. I, too, expected to see Tony and Candra team up again for Denmark, especially in light of the news that Tony has signed on to play with a club in Denmark. On the other hand, you can see Gunawan/Riyadi and Wijaya/Saputra in men's doubles. It just isn't the Gunawan or the Wijaya we expect to win.

I find it interesting that so many of Indonesia's younger players are getting the chance to play in Denmark. If their reasons for not sending them to the big Asian tournaments are money and the risk of early elimination, then sending them to a 5* tournament in Europe is a puzzling, yet laudable, move. Perhaps they knew or guessed that China, Malaysia, Korea, and Thailand would not be sending their best(or any, in the case of the latter two).

FAINT!Is China sending "juniors" or just second or third tier? 19- and 20-year-olds who haven't proven themselves yet? After all, their true juniors should be trying to conquer the world in Incheon next week.

I am quite suprised as well. It turns out that Hendra A. Gunawan/Joko Riyadi are being prepared to step up a level to the main team level. They are also in the "shadow squad" for Sudirman Cup next year.

Ko Herry said...its okay to lose...as long as u have gained valuable experience, esp when playing against Lars Paaske/Jonas Rasmussen.

BTW, the brothers u mentioned (Hendri/Hendra) are representing Singapore, not Indonesia :D They are playing against Hendra/Joko today in the match of the day at Birburger Open 2006.

Well blame it one this year's tournament schedule. IBF or whoever planned it out stacked so many tournaments on top of each other right after the WC'06 that players don't have anytime to rest unless they skip out on a few.

...well, then wait til next yr's Super Series schedule-which will essentially composed of 12 pre-selected tourneys(literally 1 tourney per month)-ending with the Grand Prix Finale(total of 13)....I wonder how many (of the BWF's top ranked) players can "literally" participate in each of those tourneys and give their *optimum* capabilities..hmmm:confused:  :p  :(

I think it may have something to do with the big tournaments. They had to miss the WC, TC/UC, and the Asian Games all in one year. Oh, and there were Commonwealth Games this year, too, weren't there? That affected the present and former IBF host countries. There were two changes in the schedule, too. One of them reduced the amount of concentration and the other increased it. The former move was the Korea Open and Hong Kong Open moving from Oct/Nov to August. The latter was the addition of the Philippine Open to that already huge Asian tour in May/June. The Super Series next year looks like a plan to keep things more sane. We had glimpses of such scheduling this year with the Swiss/German/All England European tour and the Macau/Thailand and Korea/Hong Kong Asian mini-tours. They didn't have as many that had a big tournament paired with a smaller, either. For example, if they'd paired Hong Kong with Thailand and Korea with Macau, then players might have opted for the higher prize money in both cases. As it was, they were competing more or less equally and the Super Series, which will feature a bunch of pairs of essentially 6-star tournaments, will be like that.

To get back to the thread topic, Yannie's list above tells the tale about the influence of the Asian Games. The only non-Indonesian in that list whom we can expect to see play in Doha is Chen Hong. Maybe Roslin or Wong, too. The list of Asian Games entrants that isn't in Yannie's list is more telling. It may not be so obvious considering the fact that all of the top players played either Korea or Hong Kong back in August even though those tournaments were only a month before the World Championships but that may just show the relative importance of the Asian Games to some of these countries.

Only 2 players/pairs are allowed for each event in the Asian Games.

Two of the XD pairs involved in the Denmark Open will be going to Doha: Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir and Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa.

For MS: Taufik Hidayat, Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso

For WS: all will be playing in Asian Games too.

For MD: it's Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan and Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto

One of the WD pair will also be going: Jo Novita/Gresya Polii (the other pair is Lita Nurlita/Nathalia Poluakan).

Fit-again Choong Hann, Roslin under the microscope in Denmark

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians will be paying special attention to the performances of men singles veterans Wong Choong Hann and Mohd Roslin Hashim when the Denmark Open begins in Aarhus on Wednesday.
Choong Hann is taking part in his first tournament after five months after his unfortunate injury - a ruptured Archilles tendon - during the Thomas Cup Finals in Japan in May.
And based on the draw released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Choong Hann, who became a proud father on Oct 18 to a baby girl, would be facing three Danish players in early rounds.
He has been drawn to play Kasper Ipsen in the opening round. It will get tougher in the second as he is tipped to face an aggressive Niels Christian Kaldau in the second round. If he goes through, he will most likely be up against top seed Peter Gade-Christensen of Denmark in the third round.
As for Roslin, he is bent on proving a point in his second home.
The Nusa Mahsuri shuttler, who had been playing for the Vendsyssyl Badminton Club since September, will take on England’s Amir Ghaffar in the first round.
He has a smooth path until the quarter-finals, where he is expected to face China Open champion and second seed Chen Hong of China.
If he clears the hurdle, he is likely to take on Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark in the semi-finals.
Besides Choong Hann and Roslin, Malaysia will also be represented by Kuan Beng Hong, K. Yogendran, Sairul Amar Ayob, Pei Wei Chung, Ismail Saman and Lee Tsuen Seng in the Danish tournament.
In the men’s doubles, Malaysia will be banking on three pairs – World Cup runner-up Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui, who have been seeded second, Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How and Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock.
The top seeded pair is the Danish combination and two-time All-England champions Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen.
Both Indonesia and China have decided to field their second stringers for the tournament. Indons will be banking on Hendra A. Gunawan-Joko Riyadi and Rian Sukmawan-Eng Hian while China are experimenting with Zhang Wei-Xu Chen and Shen Ye-He Hanbin.

Badminton: Fairuz-Lin told to win Danish title
By RAJES PAUL

PETALING JAYA: The men’s doubles pair of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui let slip a good chance to win their first major badminton title at the World Cup in Yi Yang, China, on Saturday.
And now national doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky is looking for a quick redemption from the duo in the Denmark Open, which begins with the qualifying tournament on Tuesday in Aarhus.
Rexy wants the pair, who he has picked as the replacement for veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah in the squad for the Doha Asian Games, to nail the title.
At Yi Yang, Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui did well to beat two Asian Games-bound pairs. They beat Indonesians Alven Yulianto-Luluk Hadiyanto in a group match and stunned world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China in the semi-finals.
But they lacked the fire in the final and went down 19-21, 13-21 to crafty Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan.
Rexy said that Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui had displayed great maturity in their game.
“Throughout the competition, they showed qualities of champions and I had expected them to win the World Cup. But all that desire to win vanished when they reached the final,” said Rexy.
“It is a problem with most of the Malaysian players. But I am sure Fairuzizuan and Woon Fui can brush up on these qualities and become champions.”
In the Denmark Open, Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui, who are ranked ninth in the world, are seeded second behind two-time All-England champions Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen of Denmark. The top pairs from China, South Korea and Indonesia are giving the Open a skip.
Rexy said that the Denmark Open would be a good platform for Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui to make the breakthrough in winning their first title.
“I am not being over confident but I want them to go all the way to win the title. They are capable of achieving it,” he said.
The duo have done well this year, reaching the All-England semi-finals and the Malaysian Open final.
Their first real test in the Denmark Open will likely be in the quarter-finals where they are expected to meet either Shen Ye-He Hanbin of China or Rian Sukmawan-Eng Hian of Indonesia. Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui have in their half World Championships runners-up Anthony Clark-Robert Blair of England.
The third seeded Malaysian pair of Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thein How have pulled out from the competition to enable the former to concentrate on his preparation for the Asiad.
The other Malaysian pair in the fray, Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock, will take on Singapore’s Hendri Kurniawan Saputra-Hendra Wijaya in the first round.

The scheduling is really sucks. After China Open lack of non China players, Denmark Open also lack of top players due to Asian Games.

The scheduling is too tight. It will be much better if they had 2 events in the same weeks. So players can choose to play which events they like to play. And in the end they will had time to rest.

Than to play like most of the events in a year and did not reach maximum performance.

Indonesia also send MS. (based on the draw)

But again, bad draw, Sonny DK had to play Peter Gade in R16. Really, how bad draw can you get?

Sonny had bad draw in WC had to play BCL in R32 and had to play LCW in JO. Lost again. Now PG. But at least he already won a couple times again PG. Maybe a suprise? Although I am not to optimistic.

LIlyana Natsir (Butet) has withdrawn from the Denmark Open, as the Asian Games gold is more important! I definitely agree!

So, it seems that Devin/Yunita will face the Chinese young pair of Zhang Wei/Zhao Yunlei. If they can beat this pair, another semi-final appearance beckons!

it's a pity. Asian games only allows two players from each country which has to be inside a region called asia. For mixed double, you cannot find two time Olympic champion, and double world championship champion Zhang Jun/Gao Ling, you cannot find the current WC champion, and the current world runner up. Anyone can question the AG's champion becuase it is inside a small closed circle. While Denmark open is open to everyone, if you think you're the best, come and grab the title.

I believe almost every Asians (including the Chinese coaches) think that an Asian Games gold medal is more important than a 5-6* title. It's second to the Olympics and carries national prestige!

Sony's name is also not inside the main draw anymore.

In the WD, Vita Marrisa is partnering Yunita Tetty for the first time and will challenge Gail Emms/Donna Kellogg.

This might be true for Indo and Malaysia, since a gold at Asian games is so precious to them. But for China, what you said is NOT true at all. China usually grabs half of the total gold in the Asian games, then Korea and Japan takes the rest. Other countries need miracle to steal the gold.

Li YongBo also told media that his boss (actually the minister for sports) never give him any task in Asian games, because it is not that important. In some other events, China even sent their second team to AG. While for World Championship and Olympic Games, LYB has to get at least 2 golds for tolerable, 3 golds for okay, 4-5 golds for good and excellent as evaluating his job. For AG, it is just an exercise. Another example, Zhou Mi has won the AG, but nobody mentions it. People always say sorry for her because people always saying Zhou mi has never won anything big, unlike Gong RN, got a Worldchampionship. So Gong now can work as a bureaucratic officer because she's got WC, while Zhou Mi cannot find a good job because she has nothing in hand. That's the reason she has to go to Malaysia to look for new opportunities.

In a word, Asian champion is valueless in China, but is invaluable in Indo, Malaysia, and other Asian countries :D

I remembered that once, China got 183 golds in AG, while Indonesia got only 3 golds. So whether China badminton team won 0, 1, 2, ... or 5, doesn't make any difference change the order where number 2 Korea got only 75 golds. But for indo, every gold from badminton team makes a big difference to compete other countries, almost all other asian countries, from India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Iran, Iraq, Saudi, Qatar, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia,..., except China, Japan or Korea, N.Korea, Chinese Taipei. Those are unchangeable top 5.

While China is undoubtedly the king in Asia, gold medals in badminton are still important to them. Since when did u see a second team competing in the Asian Games? This is esp when they were humiliated in Pusan 4 years ago!

Did Yao Ming, Wang Zhizhi go to last AG? Check the lifting, diving and gym team also for more.

If AG were valueless to CHN, then why are they sending LD? You know why? Cos LYB now has the confidence that LD can win with just one prop in the individual event.

except China, Japan or Korea, N.Korea, Chinese Taipei. Those are unchangeable top 5.I can't speak for China, except to say that they sent their best to Busan in 2002 and it appears they plan to again this year.

As for Korea, regardless of whether beating China is possible, every medal they get puts them closer to bragging rights vis-a-vis Japan and that is far more important. Being #2 with a population of 45 million runner-up to a nation of well over a billion is nothing to sneeze at. Look no further for a reason why you haven't seen any Korean competitors at tournaments recently.

Exactly, Korea is a very strong powerhouse in sports. Sometimes, I feel that Korea uses sports to bring glory back as their exclusive purpose. Badminton is also an example. Badminton is not popular in Korea, but Korea has a good system to train very young players. I feel that Koreans not that interested in open tournaments, even world championship. What they want is to win at OG and AG only. Badminton is just a small part of their well planned strategy for the AG and OG.

Does anyone here think Ronald Susilo have a chance of going far in this tourney:confused: ? Correct me if I'm wrong but he is meeting Taufik Hidiyat in the third Round right? I hope he can raise up his rankings back to the top 10.:)

obviously the chinese are gonna dominate the AG, since they're already no.2 in the world in the OG just behind america. in fact, it's quite possible that they might overtake america in the next OG in beijing. but what are the standings of the other nations in the AG? was it korea and japan battling for the second spot last time around? anyone have a summary of the medal tallies from the last AG? too lazy to look it up! :p

It will be happy if Susilo can just pass the 1st round. Ismail is pretty compatible with Susilo anyway. Beating Lin Dan is just an accident. I think Susilo not that good to do it again

no major upset so far. Chen Hong is struggling in the 3rd game, still 1 point behind, he seems really playing for fun.

PG, CY, and KJ, the other 3 top 4 seeds advanced without any problems.

Badminton is not a popular spectator sport and, as such, it is akin to a host of other sports at which Korean athletes excel. It is a little different from sports like team handball or field hockey or volleyball, though, in that there is a substantial recreational badminton culture. This may be viewed as a coincidence, however. The elite system and the club system are absolutely separate.
