Time and again, the mental aspects of players play a crucial part in badminton, especially when all else seem to fail. How the players motivate themselves on the court and keep that fire burning in them could mean the difference between defeat or victory in the end.

This was most evident in the recent World Cup 2006 MD final in China between the Malaysian pair of Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui and the Indonesian pair of Kido-Setiawan which prompted their Indonesian coach Rexy to comment in the Star of 30th October as follows:

At Yi Yang, Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui did well to beat two Asian Games-bound pairs. They beat Indonesians Alven Yulianto-Luluk Hadiyanto in a group match and stunned world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China in the semi-finals.

But they lacked the fire in the final and went down 19-21, 13-21 to crafty Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan.

Rexy said that Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui had displayed great maturity in their game.

“Throughout the competition, they showed qualities of champions and I had expected them to win the World Cup. But all that desire to win vanished when they reached the final,” said Rexy.

“It is a problem with most of the Malaysian players. But I am sure Fairuzizuan and Woon Fui can brush up on these qualities and become champions.”

Msians players lack of the mental and FiNAL Edge. They dont have the X factor that makes them a true champion.

Wah... speaking of mental focus... Just discovered that it helps u overcome loads!!
Today just played badminton. Was partnering my gf who cant really play.. vs another couple. the guy kep smashing at my gal and I was pissed. I say not to smash the gal. But he continued. After He smashed and hit my gf near her eye I was freakin pissed. After that all my smashes, placings, court coverage was suddenly tip top.... did not feel tired or anything!! Jus the fire to smash at him whenever opportunity arises!!!

Was actually amazed at myself after that! HAHAHA

Good for you Owen, now that you've experienced first-hand what motivation can do for you. Hope you did not hit your opponent's gf's eye. :p

Tell them to play poker, especially Texas Hold Em. It will give you a huge mental edge. Either that or you'll lose a big load of your money.

maybe he can't aim his smashes. anyway the best way to hurt someone is to lure him to the net and drive onto him hard.

My friend, you've forgotten to add an "r" to your name to make it "DrivingBirdie" since you're an expert in "driving the birdie hard onto your opponent's face?" :D

Actually it is not easy to execute if he comes close to the net which can protect him, unless you 'accidentally' hit him with your racket.

yea it'll probably be more difficult if the opponent crouch low and hold the racket up ready to block. but when you play a very tight net shot, you have a better chance of a bad return. So if you're not that cruel, you can at least do a big preparing action and laugh at how the cowering opponent covers his face. hahaha.

but usually i don't hurt people. i'm nice =)

Well, this is just as cruel since his gf will look in horror what fear has transformed his bf into! :D :D :D

Loh, just want to give my quick 2 cents on this, if you don't mind(snipping rest of your post for brevity)...
Well, personally, taking into account a player/person is physically ready/fit to play, what i see a player/person having a strong mental aspects is more conducive to a situation where a player/person is in a verydifficult position or almost in "dire-straits" or a "do or die situation"...Say if a person is down 18-20 or 19-20, in the last set of the match, how much fight that person/player will give is crucial...
One very good example we can take is from the recent WS Final between ZhangNing and XXF..Man, i'm still shaking my head in awe, just remembering each points won by either one of them..:p ;) :D

Don't forget it has happened before that even with 10 points down in the NSS, a player could recover, force a rubber and win in the end. This player's mental attributes have strengthened while his opponent's have weakened.
