will there be a future upgrade (softening) of your floor?
i can't help but think playing 3x a week at smash city over the long term is bad for the knees/legs/joints.
i like your lighting and # of courts, but your courts are brutal :(

Dude, you guys are really picky. I mean, sure, it's not exactly a cusion pillow :p with goose feathers, but it can only get SO soft. It still must be stiff enough to allow for support. Anyways, it's the best I've ever played at, better than any other open gym I've been to. I dunno what they'd switch to besides what they have now. Maybe when they get more money and a few days off (holiday?) to remodel? It'd be tough though, so unless they're going to do it this Christmas, I'd think we're going to have to wait a long time...:crying:

smash city is by far.
Far sounds a bit much, have you played at SGVBC? If so, how do you compare them on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being most rigid? Thanks.

rigidity scale? 1 = too soft, 5 = optimum playing surface, 10 = too hard: (i am not a member at any of these badminnton club)
4.5 ubc
5.0 ggbc
5.0 ocbc w/ court mats on top of hardwood
6.0 ocbc (hardwood)
6.0 bintang
7.0 sgvbc
9.0 smash city
yes, both places have concrete under the courts, but the court flooring @ sgvbc is more than twice as thick as smash city. sgvbc's floor feels only slightly harder than a properly installed hardwood gym floor.
smash city's foam is softer than sgvbc but it's simply too thin.
proper floor design requires a gradual layering from its base hardness to its desired surface hardness.

Wow, thanks for the detailed analysis Sam! So, UBC, GGBC and OCBC are ideal. That's good to know. :D

Good Job you guys don't play in england.
Most courts here are Concrete with NO layers of covering ontop.

Yep, Yep and Yep:mad:
It makes playing on a nice surface a real luxury.
Most PLaces to play in UK are Government owned sportshalls which are laid in concrete, then set "decorated" with mock wood Parquet flooring which is actually concrete slats.
Private halls are generally much better, with softer surfacing, but much more expensive and less available for badminton.

..hehe, wah, Sam, you do have a "unique" rating no.s there...Remember, those ratings are as of your(our) current age. Imagine in 15-20 yrs from, if you(we're) still playing, those no. will be "higher"..Who knows, they all could jump up 2 pts; maybe SM's rating could be 11 out of 10..hehe:p:D;)

Sir, I seriously recommend you acquire treatment for arthritis ASAP.
1) Aren't you a high-schooler? If so, I wouldn't complain. Look at all the seniors that are out there for multiple hours that don't complain.
2) I've played for 4 hours on wooden floors with tennis shoes (not the light kind, either) before, didn't have problems in the knees. My feet? Sore, sure, but that's to be expected in any sport after 4 hours...
3) Your shoes...do they have holes in them? If so, I'd say it was a shoe problem...
I really dunno. I've never had problems with any courts before, except concrete/pavement (namely, the streets), I'd think that the problem lies in your knees or feet (whichever is hurting). Have it checked out.

Start stretching more before and after, but also remember to warm up. Maybe your movements are detrimental to your joints? I dunno. I'd be careful if I were you, only a teen and getting these pains. I thought you were 50 at first, until I checked your profile.:p

JK.
Los Gatos High School. I wear glasses, don't go to Smash City that often, just sometimes on the weekend mornings. Mostly play at Moreland community center and Campbell Community Center, not good courts, but cheap and close by.

LOL. I'll stay where I am then. Of course, our badminton team is pitiful, but the school's not bad. Our courts are terrible too, you'll love Smash City's so much more after you play on ours: White walls and ceilings, audio system devices hanging from the ceiling, only six courts, and the floor is not forgiving in any way for any part of our body.

we have yellow walls using the yellow yonex birdies. lightning's horrible. floor's slippery as usual. we have um 8 courts but we have to get rid of one so we can pull out the bleachers. our teams ok kinda. we were 2nd in the league i think im not sure. but this year its gonna suck cuz last year most of our players were seniors.

If it makes you feel any better, we don't like our own courts any better than anyone else does. The floors are kinda slippery, white ceilings, white walls, low overhangings. Eck.
What school are you from? Playing what? I might know you...
Anyways, back to the Smash City floors. If you're a high school student, you don't really have anything to complain about, 'cause I'm pretty sure your school's floors, (and lighting) like mine, are terrible compared to Smash City's.
