The women’s badminton team competition faces a small delay this morning after heavy rain caused a leak in the roof of ASPIRE which resulted in water dripping onto court one. Play on the court has since been suspended although courts two and three are still being used for competition.
Play started 10 minutes late on the available courts with China taking on Indonesia on court two and Japan playing Chinese Taipei on court three. Once these matches are completed, Singapore and Thailand will play their matches on both courts.
The closure of court one this morning has also led to a redrawing of the order of play for this evening as Singapore, Indonesia and Chinese Taipei will be playing again and need equal time to rest between sessions. Officials, however, hope to have court one available again for the start of the men’s team competition at 13:00.
Referee Mohan Dharan from Singapore said: “Even a few drops of water on the field of play are dangerous. We don’t know exactly where the leak is, but I think in the afternoon the first court will be playable. If the rain doesn’t stop, it will affect the afternoon session.”
