Men's Team

Semifinals will be held tomorrow:
MAS v KOR
CHN v ???
The ??? will be decided today on a round-robin format by the 3 group runners-up (rather strange competition format, I personally think).

0900 JPN v INA
1300 THA v INA
1700 JPN v THA

Against both teams, I can see INA secure both points even by the singles (Taufik, Sony, Simon) alone. And if any of them should fail, I don't see Kido/Setiawan and Luluk/Alven (as second pairing) losing either.

It would also mean INA has two back-to-back ties today before facing CHN tomorrow.

Women's team

Semifinals will be held tomorrow:
SIN v JPN
CHN v ???
The ??? will be decided today on a round-robin format by the 3 group runners-up.

0900 KOR v INA
1300 KOR v HKG
1700 HKG v INA

Once again, it's been proven very hard to predict the women's event. Except for China, women's badminton has been on course towards equality.

There are no obvious favourites today. Is Novita or Polii injurd? I wasn't following the news yesterday, just saw the results.

Looking at the lineups, KOR has strong doubles, capable of both points against HKG and at least one against INA (very possibly both). Also, Lee YH and Jun JY are very formidable as 2nd and 3rd singles.

HKG has to rely on Wang and Yippy to get two points and hope for another one elsewhere. I think its hopes are slim.

INA has to get one point in the doubles against KOR because I can see KOR stealing a singles point.

Final prediction: KOR 55%, INA 50%, HKG 5%

Final prediction: KOR 55%, INA 50%, HKG 5%

the total is 110% ?

...you bet your bottom dollar$$$!!.:p ..
As those 2 other teams will have no pressure on them...;)..

So, pressure is on for Taufik and da boys..They control their destiny as they virtually HAVE TO WIN both ties......no slip ups, none of those..
As whether they can secure all their MS, there's no guarantee they can win all 3 of them...Do they have enough gas in their tank?? Does Taufik has enough in his tank?? Will they deliver and force another rematch against the all-mighty wall of CHN on Tuesday??...We shall await....and await indra will..hehe:rolleyes: :p :D ;)

I think Simon and Sony can beat Sho Sasaki and Tadashi Ohtsuka. Even if Taufik lost to Shoji Sato (unlikely at this moment) and Luluk/Alvent lost to Shoji Sato/Sho Sasaki (also unlikely), there is still Kido/Hendra to save the day.

Against Thailand, I also don't see Simon and Sony dropping points. Taufik vs Boonsak is quite tough...but...Boonsak doesn't seem to be in good form lately. As for the two doubles, Kido/Hendra have beaten Sudket/Pattapol quite frequently. So, that point is save. Luluk/Alvent vs Songpol/Nattapon is again hard to say since the INA pair is pretty wretched at this point.

Taufik, Kido/Setiwan are definitely one class above the Japanese, and Thailand players... only question is how well will both sides perform.

If both sides are able to perform at 100%, Taufik, Kido/Setiwan will definitely win their perspective games.

On paper, the rest of the Indo's team should still be better than either Japan, and Thailand.

A good start for Taufik as he took the first set 21-15 in 14 mins.

In the women's team, Hwang Hye Youn also took the first set 21-13, after winning 7 consecutive points to reach match point. Nana is simply too weak

Phew...it was a near comeback for Sato. But, Taufik reeled off 4 straight points to win the set and the tie. INA leads 1-0.

Lita/Natsir are doing great so far. they managed to lead 9-8.

Lee Kyung Won/Lee Hyo Jung also took the first set comfortably 21-11. The INA pair was able to get close and it was only 9-11 at the interval. After the break, the KOR pair got 5 straight points and then 3 more to lead 19-10.

Let's see if he can come back and win the rubber set convincingly

badMania
12-03-2006, 01:50 AM
I wonder whether all the 5 matches would be played?

Since this is the first tie of the day, all the 5 matches in both INA vs KOR and INA vs JAP will be played.

If INA wins and has a convincing 3-0 over THA later tonight (the second tie), I assume that the remaining 2 matches will not be played. Likewise THA vs JAP (scheduled at 17:00pm Doha time) will not be played as INA has won both ties.

Similar scenarios will follow for the women's event, although it's probably not as straight forward if KOR were to lose to HKG later in the second tie. If that's the case, HKG will still have to play INA to determine the semi-finalist.

Didn't realize Singapore manage to squeeze to the SF. They have come a long way.

badMania
12-03-2006, 02:01 AM
Kudos to Firda....she should stand a chance against Yip Pui Yin.

Now...if INA were to advance, they have to take another point from KOR (hopefully the doubles). If Pia wins...it will be a bonus...but...I take it as she will lose to Jun Jae Youn.

Strategy against HKG:
Both doubles have to win....and with Lilyana's help...they should be able to take care of that. Firda vs Yip is 50-50....but..Firda is on fire...so...she probably could win. If she lost, there's still Pia. She should take care of the relatively unknown HKG third-singles (Ng Ka Shun). So, INA has a chance to beat HKG.

However, we have to hope that HKG will beat KOR....and that's a bit difficult. They only have 2 singles to rely on. Yet, they have defeated Thailand previously (who has 2 strong doubles). So, it will be a mini-miracle if INA were to advance to the semi-final.

Felix.

badMania
12-03-2006, 02:05 AM
It is too easy for Sony right now as he takes it 21-13, 21-9 to give INA a 3-0 victory over JPN. Taufik will be back to face Boonsak Ponsana in just under 2 hrs (6pm HKG time, 1pm Doha time) Unfortunately, I will be going to the airport in an hr...so...I could only check the updates 2 hrs later at HKIA.

Luluk/Alvent better perform today....another rubber-set will be totally unacceptable

Felix.

Pia was given a walkover...definitely a strategy by Korea to conserve some energy for the later match against HKG. So, Korea wins 3-2.

Anyone know what happened to him? Yeah I looked at the score and got a bit shocked . Hope he'll be ok for the individuals.

Markis/Hendra won, still waiting from Simon. If win, Indonesia will face China again :( Surprise from HKG, Yip Pui Yin beat Hwang Hye Yeon. But, I predict that another games will goes to KOR.

If HKG make surprise with topple down KOR 3-2, INA-HKG in women's team event at 17.00 will determine which team goes to semi final.

I hope INA will revenge to CHN. TH and MK/HS probably win, and SDK will get over BCL for the first time. It's only my dream, but still hope that will be a miracle on 5th Dec :)

Hmm probably I made a mistake, the SF will be held on 4th Dec. But, it is very thight schedule if INA win and go to final because some of INA players in individual event schedule also on 5th Dec

Logging in from the airport waiting for my flight to Auckland at 9pm HKG time.

Taufik is spared a tough match against Boonsak, while Kido/Hendra and Simon won again, even though Simon struggled in 3 sets

OT: I also noticed the possible gold medal from Bowling. I think Bowling can contribute at least 2 golds. We have the women's team and possibly men's singles to mine the golds...

OT: Arrived safely in Auckland only to find Putty missing out on the gold to a Malaysian

Luckily, Ryan Lalisang made up for that by grabbing gold in the men's singles.
