I only recognize the 7th & 8th pic: Lauren Todt. Well, actually, there's that guy in the background of the same pic. Anthony, I think? Also, Lili Zhou in the pic below that. Dunno anyone else.

You mean, Radu? Or his opponent?

Yeah, Radu. he is awesome. so fast, accurate and tricky.

his opponent is also in the picture, the tall guy doing a forehand lunge, who used to play in the Russian national team apparently. he is so tall sometime he blocks my camera even when i was standing up on a chair!

Just curious, you said Dan Gouw and Chandra won the MD. But from the picture Dan Gouw's partner doesn't look like Chandra Wijaya at all. Is he a different player just with the same last name?

Yeah, Radu. he is awesome. so fast, accurate and tricky.

Congrats to Radu! He used to be playing on east coast (CT mainly), and attending tournies around tri-states area. Of course, most time, he's the one kicking butt around, and others fighting for silver.

I remembered that 2-3 yrs ago, I was honored (or, cursed) to be able to play against him during a team tourny. Of course, he was gentle enough to not kill me in like 2 seconds, and I was lucky enough to get a big smash right on him, to conclude a long long rally. :D Consider that's the high point of my career. :p

Great to see some eastern folks capture a title in tourny in the west. Wish him well during his "journy to the west". ;)

different player. he is simply called Chandra (as opposed to Candra Wijaya) he is also from the INA national team, he is only 20 years old and have immense talent.

his playing style very much resembles Tony Gunawan. even their service look very similar. on top of that, i think he looks a bit like Tony also, it will be quite interesting to see them play together!

oh, and Chandra was quite fascinated by my camera, he even went and took some of the photos for me. :)

Hello there Kwun, and everyone in BC! GOOD MORNING TO ALL!!!

I was already trying to be speedy in writing about our Tourny right away so morning I was busy as bee trying to get the results together and wanting to jot a quickie breakdown but Kwun is goodness so much faster than anyone! I just can't beat your speed or your enthusiasm! . My hats off to Kwun for always keeping us on our feet to post about the latest and greatest regarding our beloved badminton! BTW, Thanks so much for taking photos again. But hey... most of the time I saw you enjoying the games instead! H aha! I did notice you and your partner hardly ATE at all! So dedicated :o .

ANYways... I really thought we had the greatest time at this really FUN FUN tournament!! It's just so nice to be able to see everyone having just alot of FUN! We were esctactic to see our GGBC members, some of whom, didn't even hold a racquet before June 6th, 2005 putting everything they got into a game and having a great time with their opponents. It wasn't about winning or losing, but just enjoying the experience. I must say, I did find we had to wake up a bit early for our games! Like, man, we were running this tournament and even Mike couldn't get connections with our Director Chris Lawrence, (who is an incredible GEM by the way. His scheduling is so ON TIME that you WISH your game be delayed so you can get some much needed WIND back!), so ended up after many an exhausted game on the 8th, my first game on 9th was at 9AM!! :crying: !! No one else was playing! I couldn't even see straight! :crying: !! Mike didn't have time to get his coffee burst! I BEGGED for mercy but got NONE! :crying:  ! I suppose, being the hosts we should be sacrificial lambs..:p but geeee... sleep is mighty crucial..:o. That morning.....Mike and I LOST combined 70+. It was devasting...:p :D:(. Too bad our opponents weren't as sleepy  . Good excuse eh? No sleep? How about I just played bloody lousy!!

OK I finished whining  . Back to the report. We want to praise the Smash City Bosses, Jim Todt, Wayne Lum, Susan Todt and more? for joining in the fun as well with their BIG SMASH CITY FAMILY!! Boy, they came with a HUGE BUNCH cheerleading team for Angie De Pauw their new Coach and their contenders of many! We also were delighted to welcome San Gabriel Boss Eric Weiss who came all the way over from LA with a posse' of strong players including that gorgeous celeb Mona Santosa who looks so cool and plays like a MAN and took away alot of prize money! We do thank Eric because he has been so supportive of our Boss Mike and GGBC since he started the club. The Open portion was really exciting cos we got such great players such as Chandra our Coach here, Angie, Mona, Radu our Coach as well now in GGBC, Lili Zhou GGBC Coach as well, Mike Yang and Guo Jinsong GGBC Coach, Stanley Woo, Chris Hales, Igor Marmer, Kamal Massoudi, Xi Yu Group and many more from around Bay Area or LA! Lauren Todt even played the Men's Singles cos we didn't get enough Women Singles players but will wait for next year! I was especially proud of our training team member Vinay Manivel. Because our Open had no flights, he did not know what he was facing! He is usually a C or B player but innocently ventured into "OPEN" territory and played with many an A players. He didn't even have a partner but luckily Viper came in from LA last minute and teamed up with him, but they had never played before and didn't even know each other. Their games were awesome and they fought tooth and nail! They ended up winning the OPEN Men's Double Consolation. Now that's great teamwork! We are proud of you Vinay and hope you will keep training with Chandra to get Above and Beyond!

The combined age group games were fun and a delight to watch cos it's not easy to know if some fit into regular flights, A B C D, so it was great to be UNconstrained by an alphabetical letter  . Even choosing partners was fun cos an E- player, like me, can play with an A+ player, poor Mikey as long as our ages matched the event. We had a lot of fun watching Jim Todt and his wife Susan play and it looked like Jim was playing in many categories! He is in GOOD SHAPE I can attest to that for sure! Wayne was always ready and gung Ho for all his events! There was one guy from Smash City who seemed like he won every single prize in so many categories cos he is like in every prize giving photo. There were 2 strong guys from Bintang that put away alot of guys from the 70+ / 80+ group events! I cannot mention every name but it was great to see all the social members from the Bay Area clubs to come play, so I will post as many photos as Kwun and his partner can give us!

All in all we were surprised we got such a great draw for this experimental tournament, but after seeing the results and how much fun everyone had, we hope next year will attract even more players to participate in this friendly competition! This tournament was designed for good fun and entertainment but getting a good mental and physical work out as well! We had a celebration dinner last night and we toasted to ALL of us looking forward to next years turnout and we hope it will be a great blast like this one! We want to Thank Mike Yang for brainstorming a Tournament that any social or serious player can enjoy, and Chris Lawrence, our Tournament Director, who never fails to be immaculate in every way!

GGBC is waiting for YOUR ENTRY NEXT YEAR!!!

HEY EVERYONE!! START PRACTICING!!!

Happy Holidays!:D Sally for GGBC!

PS. BTW. I haven't got the results yet cos I was playing as well so I am missing a few that I can't remember. I will post it as soon as I get the finals from Chris. I also have alot of photos of the winners and runners up but will need Kwuns help to get them posted!!!

Chandra is everything Kwun said and he is also Coaching Full time at GGBC. we've asked him several times for a surname, but he doesn't have one! It's just, CHANDRA. He works very hard as a Coach and is a very dedicated player. For someone so young, those are very admirable traits.

[quote=LazyBuddy]Congrats to Radu! He used to be playing on east coast (CT mainly), and attending tournies around tri-states area. Of course, most time, he's the one kicking butt around, and others fighting for silver.

Radu is also a full time Coach at GGBC. He moved to the Bay Area around September. Every Tuesday, and now working on Thursday, we have challenge court and when all the Coaches, Lili, Jinsong, Radu, Chandra, Tang Jie Yun, , Cania, Kota, Frank and Mike get together to play, it's just unbelievable! But now they all have classes so they only play when they have time but they all enjoy it immensely. Anyone who wants to challenge any one of them is welcome! It's all Open play.

you guys went to celebrate while Weng and I went for LUNCH at 4PM and then i went home and slept for 2 hours coz i was so lacking in sleep (hey, i was there when you played your 9am match!).

but the tournament was great. lots of fun matches. there are a lot of erm.... the more mature population who certainly was having a lot of fun. i will look for some pics of them and post it here. i think the age group categorization is a good idea, these older folks will not be able to enter a ABCD tournament and have as much fun as they did. i always think that GGBC has a strong a family oriented element in it and this tournament certainly reflects that.

Ha ha.. We had dinner at 7pm. We closed at 6pm last night. Mike wanted to close GGBC early this weekend so he could take all the staff to celebrate! Next time you have to stick around so he will have the chance to invite you, but he thought you have many a waiting at home! So next year Kwun, Mike wants to ask you AHEAD of time,if you can come to the Celebration dinner with Janet, your partner, Weng and his wife, and also any additions you may have in your nest at the time??!! :D

Yes, you are so right. Young or old, the tournament is really great for getting more people to play! So Kwun....YOU gotta enter next year cos you are a great influence in our badminton world so if YOU join I'm sure ALOT of people will be inspired to do the same!! Sooo...KWUN, for the sake of encouraging the sport we love, GGBC officially enters your name into next years entry list!! Please pick your partner and let us know which combined age group you will go into!

Sally for Mike... he heee..;)

*Off topic: To Sally - just wondering, do you know when will be the scheduled timetable for the announcement of the new BWF logo competition?? Because on the info link, it mentions 2 different deadline date, (Dec. 31st, 2006 and Jan. 31, 2007)..And if so, are you planning to go back to the BWF headquarter anytime soon to attend the "ceremony"?? Do you know if they'll hold it just before next month's Malaysian Open or after??..Because from what i've read, they will announce it before the Sudirman Cup(May '07)..hope you don't mind me asking & thanks for any infos-:)

I don't mind you asking at all, but I'm not sure if I can be of any help. I haven't been going to any of the tournaments because I am not able to make all the trips. I don't even know what BWF stands for? I will not be going to attend the ceremony and I cannot make it to Malaysian Open next month. I have to go back to HKG to photo shoot an advert in China and then I have a concert in Singapore on Feb 10th, 2007. But I will find out and I will get back to you. Thank you for asking and I should be better informed as well. My apologies for not answering your question right away!

Hi Sally,:)

I can feel there is so much of enthusiasm & fun there! :D :D Thanks for the very nicely written 'report' on the G2 Cup. Hmm....So much fun!!! :) :) Well done to the entire organisation of the tournament. Is this the first year that GGBC organises this tourny?
I like the combined age group category. SOunds fun with 70+ onwards. :D The one we had recently (13th Chinese World Championship in Malaysia) started the combined age group at 100+ onwards.

Hopefully next year you will have the Women's Singles catergory. Sally, you have so many coaches now, I am sure you can develop a team of very capable players to play for GGBC around in the US.;)

Who was your women's doubles & men's doubles partner? I saw some photos posted by Kwun. Around which month will it be for the next tourny in 2007?

I enjoy reading it, :p :) I must say that your effort in sharing this is really commendable! Bravo!;)

Keep up the spirit for badminton!

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all GGBC members!

Hello Caryne,

I am so glad you are considering coming over to USA for playing in our G2 Cup which was SOOO much FUNNN!!! I don't know if Mike will consider combining 60's cos we had so many younger ones that couldn't play and were very eager! We combine right up to 130+. We will put our advert here when we do again next year so KEEP A LOOKOUT with your eyes OPEN!!!

I gotta say that was really the most FUN tourny cos it gives us "regular" players a good CHANCE at standing in the Champions shoes ya know??? When I got my little diploma, even when I made it myself, and it was the 90+ category, it was a feeling of achievement in Badminton for me, matching my exhileration when I got most popular female singer award!!! And it was so funny and just really adrenaline pumping to watch cos everyone just put everything they got into their games and it was great cameraderie and sportsmanship all rolled into ONE. Not to mention family gatherings. People came in Family BUNCHES to support one another.. ha ha.. It was TRULY SWEET :p ! So please tell all your friends, make a trip to SF and take a look at Alcatraz, SOMO Museum, Shop at Sony store or the millions of MALLS they have all along everywhere, take a short trip to San Jose, go to the Gilford Outlets and PLAY G2 CUP!! Have a BLAST killing 8 birds with 1 stone :) .

I do give my apologies for not posting the results of G2 Cup as of YET! For some reason I cannot find our G2 Director. He has disappeared and maybe on a nice X'mas holiday. I was really eager to get the results and draws posted but I don't know some of the people so I got 70% done myself but just WAITING :crying:   for the REST of IT!! So pulllease be patient cos I want to post it here, there and everywhere but just gotta find out where our Director is hiding in Indiana!! Thanks for everyones patience though!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! GG Sally

..what is the max. age combination GGBC Cup's organizer can allow??..I know Sally had mentioned it was around 90+ group. And i know the recent U.S. Open Senior tournament had a max. age group of 130+..  .
I know i've met a couple of other people who's ages are probably above 70+ yrs. old or even 75+ yrs old and they're still playing strong.
Sometimes i cringe a bit, wondering what would happen if those older folks play and then who knows, gudforbid, something "misfortunate" happened to them whilst playing. And the players playing with them would then feel somewhat "guilty".:p :(

Hello Sally,

It's Andrew (6kyu) from the UK here! I recently saw some pics of you playing in the G2 Cup - they are great and you looked so dedicated to the game. Do you practice every day? Great to see you doing so well.

Best wishes.
Andrew.

You can make it as maximum allowance as an age can GO!! :p
All I can say is that if I GO while I'm playing badminton then my life will have been well lived and I will go a HAPPY CAMPER!!!! :D Just remember to make a birdie casket for me or put my ashes on a badminton court. At least for the Chinese community burn lots of paper birdies and good racquets for me :o !
