Tantangan Berat di Super Series
Tony/Candra Siap Bertarung

Mengikuti sistem pertandingan tenis profesional, Federasi Bulu Tangkis Dunia (Badminton World Federation/BWF) menetapkan 12 turnamen bergelar super series sepanjang tahun 2007, termasuk All England.

(iya)

That article basically said what we already know about the Super Series: that only the best 28 ranked players/pairs can go directly to the main draw of a Super Series tournament ...and that there are 4 slots allocated to qualifiers (among which, the host will be allocated 2 wild cards*). *This news, I have not heard before...

Lius Pongoh said: "Thus, players who are not senior players like Taufik will have to compete in non-Super Series tournaments first before they can qualify for a Super Serie. Taufik will compete in Malaysia, but not Korea."

Then... Tony Gunawan said that he will still partner with Chandra and compete in Malaysia and Korea Open. They are ranked 16 in the world by just entering four tournaments in 2006 (yet winning Indonesian, Japan, and Korea Open). This is bad news for all the other competitors. :D

On another note (not from the article): Tony will have his big wedding celebration on December 26th in Ritz Carlton Jakarta... His wife is Etty Tantri, a former player from PB Djarum. They were married in the US a while ago, but the Indonesian custom is (at the very least) that they invite family and friends for a celebration later on. Congratulations Tony and Etty! :)

Gentleman Tony will also invite all of Indonesia's badminton stars, past and present. So fans can kill more than two birds with one stone. They may also have a chance to take a pic with 8-times AE champion, Rudy Hartono or the present hottest WC, Asian Games and Olympic Games champion, Taufik Hidayat, etc, etc, etc!

Indra must be there at all cost! ;)

Tough Challenge in Super Series
Tony/Candra Ready to Fight

Jakarta, Kompas – The challenge for Indonesian badminton players in 2007 would be tougher. In the super series system, only 28 players can play directly in the main draw. For that, Taufik Hidayat and companies have to have good rankings to avoid playing in the qualification round.

Having followed the professional tennis competition system, BWF has decided the 12 super series tournaments for the year 2007, including All England. This tournament is placed in category II after the World Championship, the highest category I.

At the end of the year, BWF will have the players with the highest ranking to compete based on their points from the tournaments. However, the number of players who will compete is not decided yet.

This system is different from the badminton grand prix. In grand prix, the maximum players in the main draw could be up to 64 players.

As reported in the BWF official website, four out of the 32 main draw players in super series will come from the qualification round. And the remaining 28 players will come from the players with the highest ranking and two wild card players from the host country.

With this rule, Cipayung National players have to have as high ranking as possible to play in the main draw. “So, based on the ranking, only senior players who can play in the super series. Players younger than Taufik’s era have to gain their ranking in the non-super series tournaments” said the head of sub-section PBSI Lius Pongoh, Wednesday (12/20) in Jakarta.

Malaysia Super Series, 16-21 January 2007, will be the first tournament where the Cipayung players will participate in. After that, 23-28 January, Korea Super Series will be the next one. “All senior players will play. But, Taufik may not go to Korea,” said Lius.

The men’s doubles players who will also participate in the super series tournaments are Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya. “I will partner with Candra and will play in Malaysia and Korea,” said Tony, who still represents United States.

Since playing for the first time with Candra, after Tony left for the US, this pair has won three tournaments, Indonesian Open, Korean Open, and Japan Open. In only less than a year, this pair is ranked number 16th in the world. (iya)

Doakan saja, semoga setelah sembuh nanti saya justru semakin kuat," katanya.

Jadi, masih dipertahankan.

(iya)

How come nobody mention about the fact that Tony Gunawan is "open" to the invitation by PBSI to "rejoin" Pelatnas for the sake of Olympics 2008

Here's the excerpt from Bola...again....I am too lazy to translate everything and will only briefly translate the important points.

The main point is that Tony feels honoured as an Indonesian if he's requested to play again because that is an indication that he still has the capability to compete in the top level.

Jaya Raya's club owner, Ir. Ciputra also gave his blessings to recruit both Tony and Candra back for the Beijing Olympics 2008 because of the underperformance of the men's doubles sector recently.

Tony Siap Bela Merah-Putih

“Sebagai WNI, saya sangat terhormat kalau diminta kembali membela Indonesia. Saya merasa tersanjung karena dianggap masih mampu,” ujar Tony Gunawan.

Setelah bersama Candra Wijaya menyabet gelar Indonesia Terbuka di Surabaya, Juni silam, pasangan ini kembali dilirik PB PBSI. Ketua Umum Sutiyoso pun merayu agar Tony/Candra sudi memperkuat Merah-Putih lagi.

Bahkan, pembina klub Jayaraya, Ir.

“Terima kasih. Saya sih bersedia. Cuma, umur saya sekarang 31 tahun, dua tahun lagi apa mungkin masih mampu? Bagaimana dengan nasib Luluk Hadiyanto/Alven Yulianto atau Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan? Saya mundur kan bertujuan agar regenerasi berjalan baik,” kata Tony.

“Saya kira Tony/Candra masih layak tampil ke Olimpiade 2008. Kalau persiapannya baik, saya yakin mereka akan sukses,” komentar Menteri Kehakiman dan HAM, Hamid Awaludin.

Namun, sebagai orang Indonesia, dia pun siap kalau memang PBSI berniat menariknya kembali. “Hanya sekarang tinggal bagaimana PBSI menyelesaikan persoalan saya dengan tempat bekerja dan federasi bulutangkis dunia saja,” tambahnya.

Semenjak hijrah ke AS tahun 2002, prestasi pemain kelahiran Surabaya, 9 April 1975 itu tetap mengkilap. Tony membuktikan bahwa dirinya belum habis. Justru sebaliknya, makin tua makin berminyak.

Sore hari, seusai bekerja kembali melatih bulutangkis.

Hmm, so after reading, it looks like the plan will be to "re-hire" Tony & Candra just for that one event again; "player-for-hire" type of deal. Because like Tony mentioned, his status/future will need to be "cleared" by PBSI. However, after reading the article, Tony sounded quite humble or "reverent" when he mentioned he wanted to give the other 2 Pelatnas' top MD pairs a chance to perform.
Btw, i'm not too clear on the Olympics rule, but does a player need to be a part of/under the National Team, in order for him/her to compete??..
Anyways, badMania, thanks for sharing that. And is that from an earlier article or a new one. I think the Indonesian Olympic Committee needs to certify his status and clear him to play for the Indonesian team, if, he's not in it at that point in time.

As for the article, it's in today's edition of Bola (22 Dec).

..from understanding what you've written re Tony's status, it could be a "slam-dunk" or "convoluted" process. Depends. I don't know, "status-wise" or even "contract-wise", what sort of obligation Tony has with his current employer, OCBC,and maybe to an extent the USBA. But i'm sure Mr. Chew and USBA will try to accommodate and allow Tony to go back and play for INA in 2008. But then things could get a bit "knotty" once he is on the INA/PBSI side again and wish to come back to U.S./to be "relieved" from PBSI (you know with the typical INA process, esp. when money is involved etc.).. :p :( ..Anyways, we'll see..:)

Oh, re the article, yes, i found it. I have to click on the Print Edition link.:p Here it is for those interested:http://www.bolanews.com/edisi-cetak/bultang.htm

Jo absent for two months
Greysia Polii partnered with Vita Marissa

Jakarta, kompas - Injury suffered by Jo Novita during the 2006 Doha Asian Games impacted on the restructured formation of women's doubles at the Cipayung National Training Centre. Because of Jo being forced to rest for about two months, Greysia Polii would partner with Vita Marissa in the early 2007.

Jo suffered knee injury while representing Indonesia to play against Malaysia in the Asian Games qualifying group. Jo, partnered with Greysia, was unable to continue the match against Wong Pei Tty/Chin Eei Hui in the second round. Having won 21-17 in the first set, Jo/Greysia lost 20-22 in the second set before bowing out because Jo was unable to continue with the game.

"According to the doctor, my left knee muscle was torn and there was blood clot beneath the tear. Its treatment would have to be therapy. So, I wouln't be playing in January and February," said Jo, Thursday (21/12) at Jakarta.

However, Jo mentioned that her condition improved since she was first injured on 2 December. "When I first suffered the injury, I could hardly walk. But, it has now improved, being able to walk with the help of a walking stick. Pray for me, hopefully after recovery I'd be stronger," said she.

Jo, a player from Jakarta's Tangkas club who has been a member of the National Training Centre since 2000, has been partnering with Greysia since 2005. Together with Greysia, they managed to win a title at the 2006 four-star Phillipine Open. In addition, Jo/Grace also managed to reach the final of six-star Korea Open.

However, with her injury, Jo had to postpone participating in the Super Series tournaments in the early 2007. At most, she would be absent in the two tournaments held in January - Malaysia Super Series and Korea Super Series.

For those two tournaments, as commented a day earlier by the National Training Centre's sub-sector chief Lius Pongoh, Greysia would be registered to partner with Vita. However, the pair would have to play in the qualifying rounds for they have not had an world ranking.

While changes ensued in the women's doubles discipline, other doubles sectors have been maintained by the national training centre's coaches, including the recently in-form Flandy Limpele/Vita. "For the time being, only Flandy/Vita were able to match the ability of Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir. So, they could still be maintained. What is more, they have not been exposed to many tournaments," said the coordinating doubles coach Christian Hadinata.

Flandy/Vita only participated in three tournaments since being formed by mixed doubles coach Richard Mainaky three months ago. Flandy/Vita managed to win a title in their first tournament at Japan Open.

After that, they managed to reach quater finals of Denmark Open in early November. A week later, the pair who were now ranked 34 in the world ranking, emerged as runners-up at the Dutch Open.

Actually Flandy/Vita were prepared for the Asian Games. But, due to the limit on athlete quota, Flandy was forced to call off his Doha trip. (iya)

Hadapi Kejuaraan Super Series Malaysia & Korea

As for the draw... not out yet... I am anxiously waiting. I hope the Indonesian doubles won't clash in the early rounds... since there is no National Separation in the Super Series...

I hope our players will clash with the Malaysians in the quarterfinals... that would be excellent!!! I love our Indo-Malay rivalry... Sort of like England vs. Ireland... and Japan vs. Korea in all other sports... It keeps the heart pumping more... :D

It's nice to see this Joko Riyadi/ Hendra A.G. team in a top-flight tournament. I hope this isn't just because it's in Malaysia. I hope they make it to more of the Super Series tournaments, especially Korea. I keep hearing about them but have never seen them play.

PBSI targeted three titles in the Malaysian & Korean Super Series Tournaments

Jakarta (PR) - The Indonesian Badminton Association counted on men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles sectors to be the main strength to win titles in the Malaysian Super Series Tournament, 16-21 January and Korean Super Series Tournament, 23-28 January.

"Eventhough facing very tough challenges in the ladies' events, I remain hopeful that women sectors could bring back their best results," said the Indonesian Badminton Association Sub-sector chief Lius Pongoh at Jakarta, Saturday (6/1).

Lius said he was confident that his charges had a strong drive to win, so there was no need to be burdened with targets.

"I'm also a former athlete, playing to win is instinctive for this is the players' commitment. It is not logical to send players to a tournament to lose. So without being burdened with targets from officials, they are assumed to know what they have to do," said Lius.

In the Super Series Tournament with prize money totalling US$200,000 (about Rp. 1.8 milliard), the men's singles sector would be spearheaded by the 2006 Asian Games Gold medalist Taufik Hidayat and Sonny Dwi Kuncoro. Simon Santoso called off his participation. "According to his coach Hendrawan's report, Simon was not ready to participate in these two Super Series tournaments. Initially Simon was sheduled to participate, but after considering his coach's recommendation his participation was eventually called off," said Lius.

Based on Hendrawan's recommendation, Simon's condition and readiness was not yet well prepared after concluding the year 2006 with unsatisfactory results during Doha's Asian Games and Denmark's Copenhagen Masters. "After playing at Asian Games, Simon headed straight to Copenhagen and his results were unsatisfactory. So, his coach reviewed that Simon was not ready to play in a tournament, he'd be better off training at Cipayung," added he.

In the men's doubles sector, hopes were placed on the Asian Games silver and bronze medalists Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto and Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan, they would be supported by young pair Joko Riyadi/Hendra A. Gunawan.

In the mixed doubles sector, the world's number one Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir would try to regain their form after playing badly at the Asian Games in which they lost in the early round. This pair was actually expected to win gold medals. "I hope this pair could learn from their defeat at the Asian Games and regain their form to play well in the super series tournaments," said Lius.

Nova/Lilyana would be flanked by Vita Marisa/Flandy Limpele and Muhamad Rizal/Greysia Polii. In the women's singles sector, Indonesia's only hope lay on Maria Kristin who didn't play at the Asian Games, while three lady players who played at the Asian Games, that is Fransisca Ratnasari, Andriyati Firdasari, and Pia Zebaidah would remain at Cipayung. The women's doubles sector featured three pairs, that is Greysia Polii/Vita Marissa, Lita Nurlita/ Natalia Poluakan, and Rani Mundiasti/Endang Nursugianti.(A-105/pikiran-rakyat.com)

From BOLA (Friday, Jan12, 2007) as posted in Badminton Indonesia (www.badminton-indonesia.com)

The team sent for Malaysia Open
MS: Taufik Hidayat, Sony Dwi Kuncoro
WS: Maria Kristin Yulianti
MD: Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan, Luluk Hadiyanto/Alven Yulianto, Hendra Aprida Gunawan/Joko Riyadi
WD: Rani Mundiasti/Endang Nursugianti, Greysia Polii/Vita Marissa, Lita Nurlita/Nathalia Poluakan
XD: Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir, M. Rizal/Greysia Polii, Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa

Other than them: Eng Hian/Rian Sukmawan also joined the crowd under Djarum's flag. Sigit was actually planning to go too (partnering with Frans Kurniawan), but because he was late to submit his application, so he's not in MO. But he said they will join the other series. Oh yes, btw, Sigit/Frans are also kicking under the Djarum's flag.
