Hi everyone, I just saw how a lot of Toronto people post on this forum. I'm a beginner-intermediate (or so I like to think) player and was wondering who else in here is around same level in Toronto and wanna get together for some games! I'm in high school so can only go weekends or some weekday nights! Anyways, if anyone interested, leave a reply! Places to play at suggestions are always welcomed!

PS. I'm first poster on in the places to play section! Muwahah..:D

Second poster!! :D

Well, I play at the Lees badminton Club in Markham... I'm in high school as well... (grade 10)

Where do you play?

Will I be seeing you at OFSAA by any chance?

Don

OFSAA is in Sudbury this year... Didn't they learn the last time that it was in Sudbury... It's the most boring place on earth, nothing but rocks everywhere. Ok, I guess that was a little far fetched, but there is really nothing to do in Sudbury.

Perhaps one day I'll come to Markham to challenge you!...lol....
But you will have to wait until I get my car. :D

I'm in 3rd year university, I am a tad old for offsa. At least you're not flying up to Thunder Bay like last year.

I'm in Gr 10 as well! I only played for 4 months though so won't make OFSAA anytime soon! Lol..... I have played at Lee's a few times.. not many cause lee's is really far from where I am. As I mentioned, I'm not the greatest player... I made school team this year though! Maybe next year I'll be good enuff!

Aw man!:o
I'm in gr.11....When I play you guys I'm gonna feel so old!!
Oh well, to tell you the truth, I have never joined club before in my life.
But for some strange reason, I can beat lots of club players...
I've only played for 3 years though.

yup, only a tad though... at the metro qualifiers, there was a 21 year old!! but he didn't make it to the second day... there was even an article about him in the newspaper before the tournament....

Haha...alrite Nanashi. So is it $10 for entrance fee at Lee's??
And yeah, I think Lee's has lot's of good players because they win so many tournaments!!......LOL...
Why are you people so good??.....Is it because of the coach or just plain talent?

Don
04-25-2002, 10:31 PM
Apparently there is a rule for certain offsa sports that one is allowed to participate providing he or she has not exceeded one's allocated time in secondary school. So if I was still in highschool and I had only did 4 years thus far, I'd be eligble to play.

i believe the maximum age is 21 though...

Don
04-26-2002, 08:09 AM
There is no maximum age. There was an inticipation that you would not see many 19+ year old people playing high school sports with less than 4 years or high school under their belt. For some of the full contact and team sports like football, 21 is the limit, but I know curling, badminton, tennis do not have a limit.

what day do you want to play?

i dunno, maybe it's because we train fairly hard.... i dunno... i'm more hardcore than most of the team members which is funny...

zero
04-26-2002, 02:23 PM
Yeah, I agree with Don. But to get into OFSAA, one would have to be invited by OFSAA. I think there are 2 ways to get into OFSAA:
1. Be top 2 in the regional tournaments
2. Have a good standing in OBA, and the coach must suggest you to OFSAA.
And yeah, I think there is no age limit for badminton, but you must be studying at a high school in order to be eligible.

I'm not sure about this, so correct me if I am wrong.

OFFSA is pure high school. There is no such thing as invitation beyond high school students. It really isn't fair to invite a top provincial player that is in high school to play when he or she did not even play in the qualifiers.

OICIC, cool. Then I guess the only way to enter OFSAA is to be top 2 or 4 at regional district championships.

Too bad "closed tournaments" aren't eligible.

TDotSmAsHer
04-26-2002, 04:03 PM
Yea OFFSA is for high school students only...... how about someone intentionally fails high school just to play in OFFSA? HEhe..

As for Lee's don't you have to be guested if you're not a member? Last time I checked you can't just drop in. You gotta get guested by a member and pay $10. I might be wrong though.

ANyways... count me out since all you guys are too good for me! hehe.

ANY BEGINNERS or low INTERMEDIATEs left in this city?

TDotSmAsHer
04-26-2002, 04:26 PM
Oh yea... let's make this place the official Toronto Hang out! heh.

zero
04-26-2002, 04:48 PM
Haha, thats why we have to go with Nanashi...:D
Also, if we go, just come along TDotSmAsHer, it might be a good time for all of us......
You can either gain experience or have a fun time, there is no loss in this situation, except the $10... :p
I hope when I go, I will gain a few pointers and experience.

TDotSmAsHer
04-27-2002, 08:19 AM
Hrm..... when are you guys going? No one laugh when you see me play please! lol.

04-27-2002, 12:01 PM
Umm....I dunno.....maybe after OFSAA because Nanashi is training I think. ;)
Do you think you have a chance of winning Nanashi?..;)

Oh yeah, have you guys ever heard of Brantford club or camp?
People say it's a pretty good camp or club.

TDotSmAsHer
04-27-2002, 02:08 PM
Never heard of Brantford. Where is that?

Oh yea when's OFSAA over for u Nanashi?

zero
04-27-2002, 04:52 PM
OFSAA runs May 2-4 this year in Sudsbury.

Nanashi
04-27-2002, 09:32 PM
actually, they delayed ofsaa for a week this year, ofsaa runs from may 8-11....

you actually can just walk in and play as a guest... i play on sundays from 1-7.... but from 1-2 i'm taking a lesson... if you wanna play on the weekend, sunday is a good day for me..

TDotSmAsHer
04-27-2002, 10:15 PM
Is Lee's accesible by TTC on the weekends? I know buses do go through that area but only rush hour.........

I could probably get a ride there... but will have to use bus to get home!

TDotSmAsHer
04-27-2002, 10:21 PM
Oh yea................ you guys got any other suggestions besides Lee's? One thats preferably acessable by TTC.

Places I can think of is.......

L'amoureaux (havn't played there but I'll be going there sometime in the near future....... it's Friday drop in $5 7-10 pm Saturday Rent-a-court $10/hour/court Sunday I'm not sure what times..)

Leaside (played there once.. mostly adults.... $5 Tuesday 7:30-10 Thurs 7-10)

zero
04-27-2002, 11:28 PM
Um....Isn't L'amoureaux packed there now. I have heard so many bad experiences there from this forum.
There's always a local YMCA as the last resort...:D

Also would you considered give me some pointers? I used to play alot but lately been busy and my game has fallen drastically my smashes are like feathers. Would it be possible to meet at Lee's and help me out?

Trust me TDotSmAsHer, I'm probaly the one that has to travel the farthest difference.
I'm in Mississauga, but it only takes me 15mins of travelling time because my bro drives at 200km/h the whole way...:p
It usually takes us 45mins if there is no traffic jam, assuming that we drive close to the speed limit.

TDotSmAsHer

200...km/h.................

How many speeding tickets does he have so far? Lol.

Well, I got no ride so I might have to take the bus! Actually, I think I can get ride there.. but bus back.. :)

So none of you got msn/icq or anything?!

L'am is ok on Saturday as there is space to play there. Do not go on Sundays 8:00am-2:00pm. There is limited space. If you're not a long time member then you won't get too chances to play. Problem is around 12 Mainland China people have been regulars for about 2 months. They hog the court and skill level is beginner. I would definitely go Saturdays to L'am, 8:00pm-11:00pm.

Well, my brother got a ticket once for speeding on the highway doing 139km/h in a 100km/h zone. This was because he was travelling from Toronto to Kingston....hehe...

Chu Pa... could you tell me the times for Friday/Saturday/Sunday at L'am? Thanks I appreciate it!

If I go Sunday.... I thinK I will see if I can get someone to come with me! I'm only somewhere between beginner-intermediate but friend is advance! I'll get him to smash really hard in the court hogger's face and scare them off the court... loll (that's if what you said about the mainland chinese people is actually that bad)

The Mainland Chinese people are ok except they just hog the courts. They understand that if their skill level is not good they won't play with the better players. That is a good thing. :) I don't think L'am needs more people on Sundays. Already jam packed. From what I heard from the regulars. If you are an intermediate player then you can definitely come and play on Sundays. I understand as space is limited and having better games with better players is a plus. Nanashi, have I seen you at L'am on Sundays?

I been playing badminton for some time but forgot to how to smash there was a certain way I used to smash that gave me a pretty hard smash but i stopped playing for a year and when I got back into the game my smash was really slow. I'm thinking of getting some training for Jen Lee maybe just to get my smash like how it used to.

Nanashi you get training there right is it helping?

To TDotSmAsHer dont put yourself down by saying you suck, everybody starts somewhere. You can't master badminton in 1 day it takes years. When do you guys want to meet at Lee's these days? I might bring my friend twin bro with me, we need to pratice our doubles for the York Tourny next year.

Let's not go to Lam last time I went there they wouldn't even let me play and it wasn't even full, and we they never gave me and my friend a reason. THey looked at me if I was a criminal it was horrible. I was trying to give them my cash but they wouldn't take it I was confused.

At Saturday in the summer, I still remember this very well. Me and my friend heard that this was a good place to play and we decided to check it out, so we walked from finch to lam, took us like an hour and we kept on getting loss, when we got there, I was asking where to pay and they say only members. I was thinking but the people at bady central didnt' say anyting about the being a club member. Then I asked how do you become a club member they say you need to know a club member. When they told me that I was thinking thats the dumbest thing i've ever heard. If you need to know somebody to be in the club how the hell was the club formed if you need to know an existing club member?

A better question for you guys, who brought mainland chinese people there? + how do you know there mainlanders?

I'm a club member but I rarely go on Saturdays. When I started going in 2000, the treatment was not that good either. Mainly, the organizer's wife is quite strict. On Sundays, Ken the organizer is much more friendly and allows everyone to play except if it gets overcrowded. Try to go Sundays early around 8:15am and play till 10:30am. At 10:30am they close three courts as they are used for golf classes. That leaves 6 courts. 2 are used for badminton classes. Which leaves 3 courts for roughly 25-30 people. I go Sundays because the people are more friendlier(sp?). Why the Mainland people know L'am? Word of mouth, BC, or Toronto badminton website. If you are HK, you know the difference between Mainland Chinese and HK people. The way they dress and they speak Mandarin.

I don't go to McDonald. I wasn't even at Ofsaa this year didn't bother trying out, can't miss out on school very often not this year, ISU are coming like there's no tommrow.

My partner doens't even go to the same school as me so not much of a point in going to Ofsaa with strangers you never played with.

haven't gone yet.... it's from may8-11... i assume u mean the preofsaa... i finished in the round of 16... which sucks... i totally could have gotten quarters... but not semis, cuz i kno the pair who i would've played in the quarters, and they're much better than me, let alone my partner...

It's not like I'm gonna cry about it anytime soon hehe I am trying to improve and get better :) Until I can play to the best of my abilities... I will always think I suck.
