I just remember that I wanted his autograf, but a girl with black hair talked to him. But to think about it there were a couple of chinese girls. One of them cheering when Jonassen played.

Joko's English was quite lousy and he absolutely didn't want to speak at all. I always happened to sit right next to him though, so Malaysian and Indonesian players like Hafiz, Simon, Flandy etc kinda forced him to speak English with me. But he was so shy..
Some of us gave him a nickname - Joko Bodoh - since he didn't want to speak. Hahaha. Poor Joko.
Well, later some of us went to party with the players, and Joko opened up totally.. Talked NON-STOP. Everyone went to sleep already, and he was still talking, talking and talking with me until next morning..
He told me that he will learn English from CPH Masters onwards, so that it would be easier for him to communicate with me next time we meet - which is All England 2007 in a month. Hahaha. Must check if his English has improved, don't expect much though. ;)

Simon Santoso did a great job against Peter Gade in Copenhagen Masters '06, but yes I agree. They have to compete more and therefore gain more experience.
What I know of, Hendra A. Gunawan & Joko Riyadi, have played together for 4 years, or at least played in tournaments for 4. I don't know if they have played together for a longer time.

...i haven't seen much of their games/matches, but i noticed when playing against European pairs, many INA MD pairs/players do have some difficulties. Mental/experience is one thing. But I think to have any success against those European players, one must be able to attack and kill off the shuttle right off @ the onset and/or @ the earliest chance(s) & control the net by minimizing lobbing/lifting the shuttles a lot. Doing the latter means basically one is exposing one's self to a lot of smashes, esp. playing against those tall & lanky Europeans....And it's even more of an adventure if one doesn't have enough defense to counter those..;) :cool:

..thanks for your input, Trang:) ...Actually the first & only time i ever saw them play live was in 2005 Singapore Open(in QF round, i believe; i forgot who they played against but i think they lost). At that time, i believe they were starting to get their feet wet, as a pair, playing in higher starred tourneys. Only thing i remember from their match was that, their playing level was just not up to par(as they mostly did lots of rallies with your usual lifts & smashes, not much variations). On top of that, they weren't consistent. Now, i don't know how much they've changed ever since that tourney, but in short, they didn't catch my attention...Anyways, IMO, whatever they are lacking, they have to learn to adapt and somewhat change their playing tactics, esp. when playing European or Asian pairs..:rolleyes: :p

LOL... I got news... My coach told me that Sigit Pamungkas and Markis bullied Joko.. :eek: Hmm, so, Markis and Sigit convinced Joko that Hendra A.G is not good for him... Joko, being from Solo, is down-to-earth, and didn't give any comments.. Then, Markis snatched away Joko's handphone, and SMSed Thomas (joko/hendra's coach)... It said, "I want to change partner.. Sudirman badminton squad loses player to dengue fever

Men's doubles shuttler Joko Riyadi will miss next week's Sudirman Cup badminton mixed team championship in Glasgow, Scotland, because he is sick with dengue fever.


"The doctor said Joko will not be able to make it, so the team will only feature 19 shuttlers," the Badminton Association of Indonesia's official in charge of training, Lius Pongoh, said as quoted by Antara on Monday.

Joko's absence means there will be five men's doubles players on squad. They are Markis Kido, Hendra Setiawan, Alvent Yulianto, Candra Wijaya and Hendra AG, who usually partners Joko.

"Hendra AG will still join the team as a backup, in case something happens to one of the other four," Lius said.

Indonesia's squad flew to Glasgow on Monday night. Indonesia is in the same group with Denmark, South Korea and Hong Kong.

Officials say the team's best chances to score points will come in the men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles.

Women's singles coach Hendrawan is hopeful Maria Kristin and Adriyanti Firdasari will be able to help the squad in the round-robin stage.

"Hong Kong players will be the toughest challenge for our women's singles. I think the two shuttlers still have a chance to beat the Korean or Danish players."

Defending champion China is upbeat on its chance to retain the trophy.

"We will have no problem getting past the group stage," said China's head coach Li Yongbo, as quoted by Xinhua. "Our target is to play our best at the Sudirman Cup and retain the title."

The badminton powerhouse will meet fourth seeds Malaysia, England and Thailand in the group stage.

My friend told me the story about Joko who got lost during All England!

He went to Chelsea to watch The Blues vs Tottenham with Vita, Rani and Lilyana. Then, he went to London with the girls, but the girls left him there. After the match was over, when all the Indonesian players were supposed to gather in Uni of Birmingham, Joko didn't appear. No one knew where he was.. But he showed up an hour later and said: "I got lost in London"..
