Hi there EVERYONE!!

We are very excited to announce that there will be NO FEES charged to watch this exciting event so please don't miss this chance! We'd love to have a great, whooping, cheering audience to come and support USA's best players so tell all your buddies to come on down to GGBC on Feb 2nd to 4th. With your support, we're sure they will get all revved up to play their best and most aggressive games! We do hear Howard Bach is on the list of applicants but we don't want to confirm until we do get his application on the registry so watch out for the draws which will be posted on our site and here too.We do know that we will look forward to the finest atheletes on those days and we will welcome them with open arms! :D :D :D! GGBC is so happy and grateful to get the bid for the National trials and once again obtained support from Yonex. Mike also asked Chris Lawrence to come with his great directing skills and has agreed to spend a small fortune bringing in the umpires from GG / UCB Open last year! With the performance of past partnership between Mike and Chris, we can expect this event will be conducted with the best people in the most professional fashion. So all you have to do is come and enjoy the games!

BTW, our food court upstairs will be open for munchies and yummy drinks so you won't even have to bring your lunch or eat it elsewhere first!

Regards, GG Management!

Sorry haven't heard any word yet but we will keep all fingers crossed. I do believe Tony should be pretty busy though. When we met for lunch with Eti last time in HKG he said he had a very full schedule this year so I'm not sure. He is playiing alot of partnership with Chandra. They will play in all the opens this year. At that time we hadn't secured the team trials so I couldn't FORCE him to give me his word he would come! Ha ha...:D

Hi Everyone,

"THE BACH" has officially confirmed to Mike that he is very much looking forward to the Trials in SFO and in GGBC in February. We have confirmed most of the OCBC players so it will be very exciting for sure! Please come out to show your support for our USA team and for Badminton. Let's do our best to make Badminton as popular as any other racquet sport in the US of A! :D

Yours Truly, GG Management!

Our National Trials are approaching very soon and Howard Bach, winner of 2005 Men’s Doubles World Championship for USA, is confirmed to play!! Tony Gunawan is also coming to support his students and both will be giving a Clinic on the last day of finals, Sunday, Feb 4th, (please see details in another thread here on our forum) We are very very happy to hear this news and hope everyone will have understanding and patience for the availability of the courts on the dates of the tournament which is Feb 2nd to 4th, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is a very important event for GGBC and we really encourage members and guests to come on out in droves to support the players of all the Top National Players of USA. They will ALL be vying for the top seed ranking they need for the prestigious 2007 Sudirman Cup! Please come out to support them because this is the FIRST time these trials have been granted outside of Los Angeles so GGBC is very honored to achieve this recognition by the USBA (USA Badminton Association) and want to show our great support to their final destination!

Please note the court availability from Feb 2nd to Feb 4th, 2007:

Friday, Feb 02, 2007 :
10am to 6pm: ALL courts will be OPEN for OPEN PLAY by Members / Guests / lessons.

**Please note that all courts for OPEN play will be subject to queuing and availability because of lessons and also National competitors using those courts for their warm up and practise.

Is there a schedule of when event (ie. MD, MS, XD, etc.) is happening?

Hello,

At this point, our Director Chris is still receiving entries. We are told we have a fantastic turnout for this tourny so we are very excited! :D Once the entries are all received and deadline is past, I'm sure Chris will send us his roster and we will post here so please keep an eye on our page and stay tuned.

As for Howard and Tony's clinic, we are still finalising prices. We want to find out how much they would like to charge but Tony is in Korea playing in the Finals I believe and it is hard for him to get on internet and phone to communicate with Mike so we are finalising their schedules and prices as well. Please keep in touch and we will keep you on the minute updated as possible! Thank you for your patience.

Just curious, the title "Team USA Trials" sounds like for a tournament for any new players who want to join Team USA. But aren't Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach already the backbone of Team USA?

Any player on the USA team must have US Citizenship. Tony was given a grant to represent US last time. I don't know if this can continue and don't know if he has received his US ID. Alot of good players are not qualified cos they don't have the US citizenship. Our own Coach GG Chandra cannot play cos he is not US Citizen :( .Tony is now busy teaming up with ole buddy Chandra Wijaya playing many International Opens all over the world and they marathon tourny next year cos this is the first year BWF has managed to obtain huge sponsorship worth millions of dollars. I think it's called the World Series. Correct me if I'm wrong. My memory stinks  . I think Tony is still at odds on who he will play for, but surely Chandra is his good buddy and they said they really enjoy great chemistry together. They have been friends since young training in INdonesia. They are quite the team and pretty much can beat the best of them. I think their biggest competitors are the 2 China Men's Doubles guys, Fu and the other great player (forgot name) . Tony is coming to GGBC to oversee his own students in OCBC. He won't be playing and he is coming to GGBC after just returning from Korea (he's there now actually and told Mike very tired but doing very well) and then he is off to All England to compete on March 6th. With all the jetlag this can be exhausting! :( Howard will be playing. Everyone else will be vying to represent US in the Sudirman Cup 2007. Sorry, that's all I know, don't know if it answers your question!

Sally, thanks for sharing a bit of info to the rest of BC members. As i think not all of us know much abt abt the qualification requirements needed to represent the U.S. in BWF's sanctioned events..
..Re Tony's status, yes, he was given a special grant to represent the U.S. to play in 2005 WC as well as the U.S. Sudirman Cup team event (http://www.usabadminton.org/page.asp?page=Sudirman+Cup). He also participated in last yr's U.S. Thomas Cup team..I believe those 3 events + the Olympics require a person to have a citizenship(or somekind of a special grant just like what Tony had)..;)
..Re the current BWF's tourney is called the Super Series..and there will be a yr ending Final Grand Prix(location is still undecided)..;)
Off topic: About Tony's decision to play for INA again this yr & next yr, yes, it was mentioned in this forum also(more like a player-for-hire deal). And abt his partnership w/Candra's this yr, well, as you may know, they failed to win either the MO or KO. I think their "biggest competitors" are not only CHN's MD, but all the young, up & coming pairs from KOR, MAS even INA. Cos as we were watching them play in those 2 tourneys, we can tell that their bodies are not as young as before, esp. playing against a much younger opponents, if you know what i mean.. hehe:p :( :crying::D ;)
Nonetheless, I know it won't be easy and like you mentioned, it will be quite exhausting with all the travels. But hopefully in the upcoming All-England tourney, he and Candra will be refreshed & can taste that sweet victory once again..:p :D :cool:http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif
(Btw, sorry, i just read in another thread that you are currently in S'pore and won't be attending next week's tourney @ GGBC..hmm, what a bummer:p)

Can you believe it? Seems everytime something fantastically exciting happens in GGBC, I'm missing it!!!  . This is MOST devastating!! Of course I am looking forward to Singapore cos I really miss all the fans there but GEEZZZZ, I cannot stand to miss such an event at GGBC! I'm TOTALLY jealous of all that can go see this. I really want to be a part of it!! :crying: Mike is so exhausted arranging all of this stuff. First the G2 Cup and then the planning of the trial. It's really alot of work. But we have a great team. We always work together as a team and we love it. Mike is high on promoting team effort.

Anyways, OH I didn't know Tony and Chan lost. Oh geez :( . He must be so tired and he has promised Mike to do our Clinic. Ooops. Yes this job is a limited one isn't it? The back tide pushes the front and age is your worst enemy. They are such legends but who can escape the inescapable? Those young & fresh jumping beans. You just cannot out jump them. Your experience and technique works for you to a point, and then the physical pounding take you to the finish line. This is same for music too but of course we get the odd Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett whose talents defy their age and they just keep getting better and better! But I cheer for Tony and Chandra cos they are that good and they are just two great and nice guys!:D

GG will be posting the draws and schedules for the USA Trials within the next two days here at BC. Thank you for your patience. Apparently the turn out is FANTASTIC and a wave of last minute entries have prompted us to recruit more umpires! Alas... the cream of the crop of USA players! It will be a great tournament as we have our unfallible Director Chris Lawrence once again and of course, our Captain, Mike Yang. Please do stay tuned. GG is also itching to find out WHO will play WHO and WHO is coming! Let's give them our support and cheer them on :D ! With your whooping and cheering, I'm sure we will get their adrenalines pumping!

Thanks. That answered my question. So badminton is more like swimming, you have to win in a trial in order to join the national team, unlike basketball, the committee picks the players.

Regarding team selection, at the end of the Trials we will end up with four men and four women on the US Team who will represent the USA in the Sudirman Cup in June and in the Pan-American Championships in May. The winners of each event (Mens Singles (one man), Womens Singles (one woman), Mens Doubles (two men), Womens Doubles (two women), and Mixed Doubles (one man and one woman) automatically get to be on the team. If someone wins more than one event then the additional man (men) or woman (women) who gets to be on the team is determined by a set of tiebreakers (based on how they did in specific events in the Trials with preference given to Singles results) that USAB has published on the web-site. If interested in reading more about the team selection process, go to the "news" link on www.usabadminton.org (http://www.usabadminton.org) and look for the news item giving information about the Team USA Trials.

Good to see Sally is posting here :)

May I suggest GG Management to post at the venue the latest draw, game results, and games in progress (on which court), so spectators like us can follow the tournament and the game better. It makes it more exciting. Do it in big print or projection screen would be nice. Look forward to the tournament this weekend.

Latest draw and game results, are usually posted on this big green wall we have which you will see as you enter the courts in GGBC. games on which court, which players, will be announced as each game commences.

I must compliment our Tournament Director Mr. Chris Lawrence. For every tournament we've had, there have been NO delays. Everything is SPOT on time, much to my detriment last time. I was hoping for some REST between games and just couldn't :crying: ! You have a great time now! I do ENVY you!

That is not Ben Hussey at all. Ben Hussey is much younger than that guy. His name is Kamal something.

Raju is not participating at this trial this time around. He recently just has a surgery on his knees and is now recuperating. You will not be seeing him anytime soon in the badmnton circuit. I pray for his full and speedy recovery though.

One lady is Maggie Ho while the one prior to her is LILY ZHOU.

Nice to see Cheng Tam win the first MD round - very nice person, always willing give us badminton tips, and doesn't mind practicing with novice players like me. :)

Wish you can go all the way.

Kwun, where are other results and please keep those pictures coming.
Thks.

WS: Eva Lee
MS: Eric Go
MD: Howard/Bob
WD: I think Eva/Mei. There was a forfeit after a couple of points.
XD: ?? didn't watch

Exhibition match was really entertaining.

Lauren Todt fell ill overnight and didn't play any matches, withdrawing from the XD semis as well as WS third place match. She just warmed up and took one serve before bowing out of the WD finals (more for show for the audience) versus Lee/Mangkalakini. She was in the bathroom the entire time.

Lee won a tightly contested match against Lili Zhou, both ended up on the final women's squad along with Todt and Mangkalakini.

Go came back with a vengance after going down early against Jinadasa in the MS, easily winning the second set.

Bach/Malathong took the MD final with relative ease, they were having some fun

Bach/Lee took the XD in straight sets over Malaythong/Mangkalakini.

The exhibition was really the highlight of the entire day, Gunawan/Malaythong partnered up to defeat Bach/Chandra for one set, before switching partners, where Gunanwan/Bach came back from 4 points down to beat Malaythong/Chandra. Sound effects, yelling, and showmanship to the extreme, lots of laughs and smashing all the way round.

Ziwei might not be playing cause he only moved here a year ago, and there might be some rules laid out by the USAB that don't let him? Just a guess....

Zi Wei from UBC, our own coaches, Chandra, Radu and Guo Jinsong, all could not play becos of their US status so actually there are many many great players, and growing, in the US now but becos of their US status, are not able to represent USA as of yet. These players, I'm sure, will be playing in our next GG / UCB open probably sometimes in the latter of the year, becos it will also be a ranking tournament.

The man in the photo is Kamal and is our GG member. He is a very good player for someone who just plays about once a week. He is good friends with Mike and he is one good sport as when he does come he doesn't want to leave. Even after we close he will try to get Mike to keep playing :) .

Thanks kwun. Both flights look mighty interesting, I wonder where the fellow who did so well at the GGBC/UBC tourney last year (2nd place), Zi Wei Qin, is? Anyone know if Lili Zhou is still coaching Lauren Todt, would be a rematch of teacher-student if they reached the finals again.

>>zi wei was not eligible for this tournament due to his current US status. More detail in my reply above this box. Lili has been coaching in GGBC for almost 4 months now. At the moment we have 5 Coaches, Chandra, Guo Jinsong, Lili Zhou, Radu Malevschi, and Tang Jie Yun (Gwangchou Provincial team Coach)

>>GG website is currently under serious construction, but when we launch and once we get our great photos from Kwun (he is articulate about screening his best work for us!) we will post all photos, draws and results under the "gallery" category. I'm sure Kwun will post photos here as well. Give him some time as he works so hard at the games! It takes a lot of time to edit and get it up on line. I will get the results and post here when I get it. He has a rather demanding day job back in Boston and is often flooded when he returns from a tourny. But he is great so I will wait patiently for the final results!

GGBC does record all its matches and will rent them out to our members for free.

Hello all,

I didn't get to go to those darn games so I was wondering if someone who went daily or whenever could post some fun quips and details about the games which are not related to the matches? How was it having Tony, howard or other great players from US just sitting around chatting with everyone? All the players are friendly so I'm sure alot of people go to chat and take photos with them or something. Anyone join the clinics they were coaching from BC? HOw were those? How was the atmosphere of the crowds cos if there were 200 lookers it must have been really hot cheering in there? I just wanted to know some fun observations of the games, audience participation and GG environment in general :( ! I want to know everything! Anyone care to impart? BOO HOO!

I only attended today, the last day of competition, but I found it pretty cold in the facility. Most people were wearing winter jackets, and all the officials/volunteers were wearing GGBC sweatshirts on top of their other clothes to stay warm. I don't know how the HVAC system blows at the gym, but if it doesn't interfere with shuttle flight, I think the audience and players would appreciate it being turned on :) Several players spent their spare time running laps and other exercises to stay warm.

A few reporters dropped by, one interviewed Mike Yang, Tony Gunawan, and Howard Bach for a radio show of some sort (Bach speaks some Mandarin, apparently!). Another reporter and TV cameraman showed up later on, around the time of MS (if I recall).

The audience were really polite, but a few got up the nerve to take pictures with Tony Gunawan, he was very friendly, as always.

During his MS, XD, and exhibition matches, Howard Bach asked the crowd to cheer him on, that got some laughs (and cheers ;)).

The exhibition was a lot of fun, long rallies filled with smashes and amazing reflexes!. Right before the start of the match, Howard Bach asked for a crowd member volunteer to act as umpire/scorer, but no one came forward after several requests, so Mike Yang grabbed one of the official umpires--she had fun with all their court antics as well. Bob Malaythong was particularly loud during the last set, (almost like a women's tennis match), trying to disturb the opponents with grunts, only to have his own partner, Chandra, hit into the net several times. This got the crowd laughing a few times.

I was sitting near the short end of the court, and couldn't quite make out what Howard was asking, otherwise I'd have volunteered. Also I wasn't sure if an umpire certificate is needed, though I know the laws of badminton quite well, after reading quite a bit on all the debates on BC about rules, and having argued with others in the past about fine points myself. :)

I have some trouble hearing the announcement at the beginning of match of who is playing (when the crowd was still noisy) and I also don't know all the player's name, and sometimes miss the score as well. A microphone pinned to clothes for umpire would help to make him/her always clearly heard.

Eva Lee had several amazing cross court net shots that caught opponent by surprise. The finalists also managed to return a strong shot after being flicked served by surprise and were wrong footed.

A GGBC line watcher jokingly asked for Tony Gunawan's Yonex racket before the match, and offered to trade his with him. Tony said he had only one racket (surprise) and can't.

Some finalists wore Yonex shoes, but IFAIK some aren't. Several wore shirts with their names on the back (e.g. Eric, Bob). But I don't remember seeing Tony or Howard's name on their shirt. Maybe some else can remember do they have names on their back or not. A sign of being famous when you no longer need to put up your name?

Yes, it's somewhat cold inside. The only person wearing short sleeve that I can remember is a young beauty wearing thin white. Everyone else is in winter clothing, some look like they come to ski.

the Yeh twin sisters (Rulan Yeh and Rulien Yeh) have the same jersey, watch, wrist band, shoes and both of them always play 110% and way more powerful than i can ever hit despite their lack in height; the only way i was able tell them apart is by the length of their pony tail. so focused and energetic they are such a joy to watch.

IBF has the rule, the player have to be Citizen or sent in the exception back to several years ago to represent a country, plus you can’t represent other courtiers for several years (3 years ?). So it is nothing can do with USAB, I guess.
