The bioggest upset yesterday must be Joko/Agus lost to unknown Germany pair.
WMC win over PHY is an upset but not really a suprised. Cauyse we already know that WMC is a good WS.
Polii/Vita Marissa win over WPT/CEH is not a big suprise too cause both Polii and Vita is good WD although they just been playing together since Asia Games 2006.

Well .. about Pi hongyan i can call this an upset because pi hongyan always had quite easy matches against wong mew choo. And i can add that 10 days ago Pi hongyan got injured when she was training in hongkong then she couldn't prepare well and wasn't really ready to play T_T
ps : it's hendra not agus lol

yes,new strategy adopted by LYB.
basically they think ZJ is a little bit old for the 21 point rally, and GL is still good enough.

Here is my evaluation of KBH :
He must surely be maturing - he can no longer be a spring chicken, having tasted the worst of defeat in the Thomas Cup, which scarred him somewhat.
His last few games, although he did not progress to any great heights, were suggesting that the guy has improved under Li Mao. As he gets more hardened, he will probably start earning his keeps by winning against better players such as BAO, CJ or CY. I vaguely remember that he took these players to very tight games in the last few tournaments. As such, the surprises might come up any time from this guy. Today, is a possible day for that against BAO.

I'll give this to KBH: he's played better of late and have troubled a few of the big boys. While he's still far from their level, he's got the ability to hang in there better. I think it's an improved sign of mental toughness. What he's got to do is keep BCL on the court for as long as possible, put a few doubts in his mind and tire him out. The beneficiary... LCW. Isn't that what team mates are for? :)

that's why Chn always perform well in tournaments.. they are practically helpin each other in the draw...
actually BCL gets tired quite easily...
he is always explosive in the early match but if KBh can reli keep him in court for a longer time he might probably runaway with the match..

Yes, I agree BAO uses too much strength in the way he plays (he likes to smash at every opportunity) but he has shown that he is quite fit. For KBH to beat him, he, either matches him in strength and stamina or beat Bao with better skills and strategies. On the latter, he had shown that he cannot match it with the big boys before but I think he is getting sharper under Li Mao. On his physical strength and stamina, I can see some imorovement.
All said and done, he is gearing up. Today, he will show us how far and fast he has improved. With a vociferous Malaysian crowd, he should be able to call on a lot more of his reserves as LCW has shown us in the past.

the new rules really weird (didn't make sense cos I dun understand)... if own country ppl keep fight wif own country ppl, wat's the meaning of the 'international' competition?
maybe they set the rule cos china keep winning? to avoid all china player in semi/final?
great to see other country also got ppl joining malaysia open.. russia.. poland.. i joke wif my fren, maybe we can go brazil or GHana to represent the country
hahaa
one thing really weird... and again.. stupid... when Hafiz playing wif chen hong.. he won first set, 21-9, then second set when he was losing, i heard someone shout at him tell him to play serious, silly mistake or something like tat.... then when he was playing not well, some ppl singing... ''ooo....ooo... balik kampung... ooo....ooo... balik kampung"...(means go back hometown) After he lost, i can still hear the crowd singing tat song to him...
he is the only Malaysian player get those... he has a good fight wif chen hong actually, 21-18 i think last set. Why ler? I'm not tat understand actually....Chen Hong is quite a world class player, losing to him doesn't mean anything at all...
Izzit because after become All England champion.. he become worst and worst and worst.. and really make we all/they all disappointed so many times?... Izzit because he really didn't fight hard... lazy... and they all know tat?....
really weird... no matter wat, i still think those ppl shouldn't do so.. if i m hafiz, i might stop, and shout at them... "who wan to play, just come down and play, dun shout shout like stupid shy cat at upstair".... haha.... I believe he is still trying hard and training hard...

Malaysia Open is strictly speaking not an "inter-national" competition. It is not a competition pitting nation against nation, but rather individual against individual. In this spirit, I not only fully agree with the rule change, but would like to further suggest scrapping the cap on the number of qualifiers from each nation to the World Championships. We should promote individuality in individual tournaments.

But the Malaysian Chinese can speak Malay.
However, come to think of it, it could also be Indonesians. From news reports, the support for Taufik in the stadium was enormous, so it is possible the stadium was dominated by the Indonesian crowd. It has happened before, especially in KL where there is a sizable Indonesian community.

Today's matches start at 6 pm, every match given 30 or 35 minutes to complete, with the last match starting at 10:50 pm.
I am not sure if that is a good idea. From yesterday' experience, each match averages roughly 40 minutes (including time spent between matches - preparation, warm-up etc). Using 40 mins as the guideline, with 4 courts (10 matches each court), the last match will start at midnight. Even that may be optimistic. Yesterday was the first round, so there were some quick matches. Today's matches are bound to be tougher and take longer to complete.
We'll see how it goes. Hopefully, other SS events will take note.

I would not read too much into it. It is just that Malaysians cannot stand mediocrity as shown by Hafiz, and that they wanted to tell him to buck up by their singing of "balik Kampong".
Truly, Hafiz should get the message and put more effort into his plays if he wants to survive in this game. His fans would desert him otherwise (if not already) but more importantly, he will slip into real mediocrity if he does not buck up. The 'wake up' call for him might have been yesterday.

The match of the round (for me) is Maria Kristin vs. Petya. :D
Maria have gone to the quarterfinal of a Superseries (or 5* / 6*) level tournament ONE time in her life. That was in Indonesian Open (2005, I think). Here's her chance to make it to her second quarterfinal...
Gosh, Indonesian WS is in such bad condition today. In the 80s, Indonesia had an undisputed national badminton queen, Ivanna Lie, who would often be in the quarterfinals or semifinals, in the 90s, we had Susi Susanti  who would go to the semifinals and finals ....and actually win a lot of glory for our country. In the 21st century... nobody yet. [Mia could have been the heir to Susi and Ivanna, but she moved to Holland].
We need a new queen! Fast....:) Maria, you are my candidate... :D

Personally, I thought it was time they srcapped the rule to keep players from the same country apart. How can you be considered the best when you're not taking on a better player, just because he/she's from your own country. Other racket sports like tennis and squash don't have this rule and there doesn't seem to be a problem there.
What the new system will do is encourage more exciting draws, unpredictable matches and results, and generate more interest. I can't remember the last time a qualifying or 1st round had such a buzz. :)

Mas fans, I believe are cheering for MAS players but I think the fans are taunting Hafiz because of frustrations and the fans' hope for an emerging hero besides LCW. Hafiz is talented, for him to improve he needs to build on his fitness, his trick shots does not work against the world's top players and most importantly, ditch Misbun. Just look at KBH improvement under Li Miao and what LM did to LCW, from an already good player in WC05 to an excellent player today. Balik Kampong should be aimed at Misbun and his stubborn and ineffective training methods.:(

I think mustn't be Malaysians who shouted this. If they were, what a shame! This isn't the way to buck up somebody. If they were Hafiz playing down there and ppl shouting "balik kampong" to them, I don't think they will buck up! Stupid rude fellows..Disturbs ppl's concentration only

Misbun was known as an eccentric player (for us non-Malaysians). Maybe his training methods are also eccentric (and could only be applied to himself)...

Try this

Then click on the "Live Scores" button on the top right corner (it's big, you can't miss it). Of course Live Scoring only kicks in at 6 pm MAS time. Good luck

Balik Kampong should be aimed at Misbun and his stubborn and ineffective training methods.:(
ya i support wat u r suggesting here and the new rules too......KBH has vast improvements under LM.:p

Oh my, England has 3 pairs!
And 2 of the English pair are playing each other.... This is just like Kido-Hendra vs. Luluk-Alven and the 'Malaysian civil war' yesterday.
I guess the BWF logic is to eliminate competitors from the same country early on so that the semifinals and the finals won't all be from the same country [like Women's Doubles where all the semifinalists are Chinese]. That makes sense... Painful to watch for the victims [like England, Indonesia, and Malaysia] this week, :crying:
...but during the semifinal rounds, more fun.... :)

lee chong wei!!! (or some china ms)
i now think the winner of the tournament will be decided between the LCW vs BCL match. i can't see PG recovering fully with all the matches he has to play.
although, now that PSH has beaten LD, his confidence must be sky high and everyone needs to watch out for him.
and PSH wins it, 21-17!!!
what an upset for the world no. 1.
beating TH in the first round then losing in the 2nd ....
Now, now, should I cancel my trip to KL???
Of course not, hcyong and terry will kill me!!!
Thank you for your bits of info here and there. At least I'm still connected in some way despite not having access to the live scores. ;)
BTW, Indra should be very happy.
I'll cheer for LCW and of course Ronald Susilo if he can make it to the QF.

wow what a great upset.definately d greatest surprise so far since MO 07 started.hehe. an interesting way 2 kick start d new super series ah.hehe.hopefully LCW win n become no1.go LCW
Maybe he was overconfident after his victory againts TH.
I think we've all underestimated the Korean who is no pushover, especially with the full backing of Malaysian supporters behind him as the underdog! :D
Now we will have more players who can beat LD. When Ronald defeated LD in R1 of the Olympics, most thought it was a fluke. What an opening to the Super Series - it is indeed SUPER!!! :)

Thank you to both of you. I'm very sad, but at the same time happy for Peter who must be recovering very fast to hand Ronald such a pathetic score. :crying:
If PG continues to regain his form, he will certainly be a threat to all others for the top prize. Not much, just US$200,000 in total, which his coach has said was what the Korean Open offered 10 years ago when he won the title himself!

Dun forget there are a lot more who can beat LCW. PG, KJ, CY (certified LCW killer) all 3 have beaten LCW last time they played against him, and also CH can beat anyone on his day. Even if LCW get through BCL, he has 2 more hurdles which are just as hard, if not more.

Maybe LD was thoroughly satisfied to have avenged his AG defeat by TH, but then PSH was in great form, fuelled in no small part by the rather supportive crowd and having the self-confidence to beat LD as he has done so once before ;)
Will LD still remain WR1 if LCW should win his home title?
