I was at the stadium today, so perhaps I am better equipped to make predictions today :), plus I can make some comments based on what I saw today.

MS

Peter Gade v Kenneth Jonassen
Peter never looked in trouble today. Kenneth was pretty steady, too, coming back from way behind in the first set to romp through. I still think Peter is tops in Denmark.

Chen Hong v Bao Chunlai
This is actually about 50-50. Chen Hong looks quite impressive today, whereas Bao was gifted by unforced errors from Lee CW. To sum it up, Chen's offensive looks strong and fast, while Bao's defense stood up to LCW's attacks, forcing LCW to go for the lines.

WS

Wong Mew Choo v Eriko Hirose
Even though I would like Wong to win, somehow I tend to pick her opponents.
Good spirited play by Wong against Xu and in the end, she just pipped it. It was pure grit all the way. Rally away. In the end, after countless long rallies, Xu lost to Wong's superior fitness. Eriko could not find her rythm in the first game, but once she did, she never looked in trouble against Yippy. Excellent footwork from the dimunitive player. Wong's main weaponry is superb fitness and retrieval. Pi and Xu may be too unfit to counter against that but I think Eriko can play that kind of game.

Zhu Lin v Yao Jie
Zhu was so dominant against Hwang Hye Youn today that I hardly noticed her match. It just went past quickly. Also barely watched Yao's match against Petya. From the few glances I saw, Zhu looks in control. Yao had a tough match today.

MD

Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya v Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae
The Koreans looked a bit out of sorts against Clark/Blair. The English were causing multitudes of problems for the Koreans. I can see why they can get into the WC final. But Jung/Lee just had enough quality to pull through. Tony/Candra looked in total control as usual. At the moment, they are firm favourites for the title. Enough said.

Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong v Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan
Kido/Setiawan had an excellent, tension-filled match today against Erikssen/Lundgaard, winning the rubber game by 30-28. It got quite a reaction from the crowd, about half supporting the Danes, and half the Indons. Koo/Tan was mostly in control of their match against the Malaysian-killers Sakamoto/Ikeda. The Japanese gave quite a good account of themselves (at least I now know why they could have won against Malaysian pairs), but Koo/Tan were just too cool. For the sake of at least some Malaysian participation in the final day, I go for a Koo/Tan win, although I feel this is close to 50-50.

WD

Gao Ling/Huang Sui v Hwang Yu Mi/Kim Min Jung
These two pairs are of different class.

Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota v Gresya Polii/Vita Marissa
Did not really notice the Indons' defeat of the Singaporeans Jiang/Li, but from the performance shown by Kumiko/Reiko today, one feels that nobody save Gao/Huang can beat them. The Japanese defeat of the formerly invincible Yang/Zhang was one of the highlights of the day, so much so that even the LCW/BCL match was largely ignored while the WD match was playing out its exciting conclusion. For some reason, the crowd was totally behind the Japanese right from the start, and I think they felt the vibe. The Chinese were in offensive mood but somehow, the Japanese managed to return just about everything. The Japanese were given fewer chances to attack, but those few chances were taken very well. In the end, the deciding factor was the Japanese's defense. When the final point was won, the stadium erupted (oblivious of LCW trailing badly in the first game). Reiko/Kumiko, overwhelmed by the occasion, acknowleged the crowd a number of times and given standing ovation. Even Wong MC and KKK/TBH were not rewarded with such superstar treatment.

Wanna see Kido/Hendra win, but, MAS pair is still too strong & consistent. I watched them at Asian Games, wow, they're so solid! Anyway, Tony/Chandra is still my fave. Yeah, fortunately, for the next few month, Tony will play as Indonesian again.

According to the schedule, the semifinals start at 1 pm.

XD

Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir v Zheng Bo/Gao Ling
This is a hard one to predict, since the Chinese pairing is new and not proven yet. But I feel that Zheng Bo is a better partner for Gao and therefore, be able to upset the proceedings.

Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms v Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Britta Andersen
Nathan sports a close-cropped head (as is Gade, now that I recall). Emms is as usual in her excellent form. Meanwhile, the Danes did not really defeat Zhang Jun/Zhao TT. It was more like Zhang Jun defeating Zhang Jun/Zhao TT. Even time he made a silly error, he would look at the lights as if blaming it for all his troubles. Zhao TT just looked at him. I am glad they took him away from Gao Ling; he would have pulled her down with him (but poor Zhao TT). The Danes played well, too, but I think the English have too much class and pedigree.

Unbelievably,

the 3 ko's (Kumiko, Reiko, Eriko) are still in the tournament; well worth multiple times the price for the entrance

LCW is out while his girlfriend in still in

Semi-finalists for WS represent different countries
Semi-finalists for WD represent different countries
Semi-finalists for XD represent different countries
4 countries are represented by the semi-finalists of MD (including USA)

Peter Gade went from being zero to numero uno; doubtful that he could even step onto the court, let alone pull off a win against Eric Pang, he is now (in my books) the favourite for the title

Well, since all 4 courts were playing at the same time, can't give full attention to any one match. Especially when Eriko was playing, I almost ignored the other courts.

I was trying to figure out how she could cover the court given her short stature, but I guess she is just fast. I also noticed one other thing. She tends to do a little jump just before her opponent hits the shuttle. Even if she was at the center of her court, with ample time (relatively speaking) to receive the shuttle, she will jump on the spot at the moment just before her opponent connects with the shuttle. With all her running and jumping, she seems to be bouncing and floating around the court.

Ahem, I can see why you were distracted by Eriko:p :p . I think that little jump you described is some sort of trigger mechanism. If you look at golfers, they display similar tendencies (not jumping before they hit the ball of course). It's so that they have consistent rhythm with their golf swings. So in eriko's case, it may be a way to get into her comfort zone and approach every point in the same manner.

If any of this doesn't make sense, just ignore it :D

I have to admire a player like Peter Gade for getting on court and then blowing players like Susilo and Chen Yu away that easily, specialy after he has been serious ill and went to a hospital. At the same time I think we have witnessed a more mature BCL who with time will only be better and better. He is a serious contender for the title.

the remaining 2 MS players have been in the top 8 a long time but as someone already mentioned CH and KJ are very underrated and people never expect anything from them, still CH problary has the best jump smash at the moment and KJ the best defense and their consistency in tournaments says everything imo. Maybe not a typical world number one but still a legend for playing like they do.

..hcyong, appreciate for providing some "fan-perspective" insights/reviews for us...
Re Eriko's "tends to do a little jump just before her opponent hits the shuttle", i think Eriko must've read her opponent quite well. Anticipating with readiness and full concentration on her opponent's next shot...;)
For the Kido/Setiawan vs. KKK/TBH match, i think one advantage the MAS pair will have is "fresher" bodies in comparison to their INA counterpart. And that Tony/Candra pair is running thru their opponents as if this is just another stroll in the park..:p :D ;)

Well said, and especially true to CH! Who is at a nothing to lose mode now.
It is quite sad seeing him beating many of his Chinese counterparts in the recently but didn’t get selected to play in the Asia Game and knowing that he has a very slim chance to play at Beijing 08.

As for KJ, he might reach the final if it is BCL or CH, but PG is just too familiar with his game.

Good luck to all 4 of the players that I like.

Well, i always regard Chen Hong as a player with high skills and don't understand why he isn't that popular or doesn't gain much respect from the others. He can beat his teammates including Lin Dan.

By the way, Tony Gunawan praised Bin Shen/Soon Hock after the match and said that they are getting nearer to the level of high standard MD. Tony is still so humble even though he won.:)

My calls (as always, winners in bold)

MS
Peter Gade v Kenneth Jonassen
Peter has always had a psychological edge. Ill or not, he will take out Kenneth in 2 games.
Chen Hong v Bao Chunlai
Interesting one. Will there be team orders? I would favour CH as he's playing pretty loosely and, through no fault of his, is always underrated

WS
Wong Mew Choo v Eriko Hirose
While Eriko if a better player, I just can't see WMC throwing away this golden opportunity in front of the rabid home fans. As always, WMC will grind out every point. We shall see how Eriko stands up to it.
Zhu Lin v Yao Jie
The Chinese girl will win convincingly..., I meant the one playing for China :p :p

MD
Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya v Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae
The question is how long can the Koreans keep Tony/Candra on the court.
Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong v Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan
Many factors working against Markis/Hendra, not least the draining epic encounter with the old Danish guys yesterday. Throw in a boisterous partisan crowd and a MAS pair brimming with confidence and you get a home win.

WD
Gao Ling/Huang Sui v Hwang Yu Mi/Kim Min Jung
Probably the least competitive match of the day. The Chinese will devour the Koreans.
Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota v Gresya Polii/Vita Marissa
It seems like the 2 cute JAP girls are destined for the final.

XD
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir v Zheng Bo/Gao Ling
I think Nova/Butet like that winning feeling again. It'll be close but I have a sneaky feeling the CHN pair might nick it this time.

Nathan Robertson/Gail Emms v Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Britta Andersen
Always liked the ENG pair and I think they are ready for prime time again.

Chen Hong is just unstoppable at this time, and as good as Bao is at the moment, I still bet my money on Chen Hong winning the semi-finals.

then Peter Gade vs Chen Hong... and as much as I like to see Gade win the first tournament of this year; Chen Hong just seems to be on a big time winning streak, and probably will earn his head-trick with this MO. (China open 06, Denmark open 06, then Malaysia open 07):p... I still have faith in Gade though!!! Gade 1:1 Chen Hong in 2006 head to head. (Japan open for Gade, World Championship for CH)

Among compatriots, there is a clear No. 1 because they train so often and know the compatriots' weaknesses by heart.(That's why KKK/TBH fear their compatriots more than outsiders.)
For CHN MS, he's CH. For DEN, PG; MAS, LCW; INA, TH; KOR, LHI...
The good thing is CH has shown he still has it in him to win but the opportunities would be few so he knows he has to take MO and his determination is 200% when he wants it.
I don't think there' ll be any match orders for CH anymore because LYB needs CH more than CH needs LYB.

Was I wrong in thinking CH can defy match orders....I heard he's planning to retire since he's getting married. Might be a good idea to do so when he is champion material but have to play support role.

come on guys, the reason is not clear yet, let's not be so subjective.

If the result is fixed then I think CH would be ordered to give CJ to advance yesterday. There have had many all-chinese matches in the past year but how many walkover occured? Let's wait until what the official say before we get too upset.

Hope CH is doing ok, same thing goes to the Korean team.

I would question the logic of forcing CH to give a walkover to BCL, especially since CH has been doing much better than Bao recently.

Let us look at 2006 China Open, where CH beat Bao in the final in straight sets. Then the head to head stats against Gade from last year, CH 1:1 Gade, and Bao lost to Gade without a single win... why would LYB have more faith in Bao than CH if he DID order the walkover???

The bright side is that Peter Gade now has a much better chance of winning the 1st tournament of this year if Bao is the winner of the other semi-final... Gade for the win!!!

Vita is weak. if INA wants any breakthrough in WD, they need to pair Polii with Lilyana Natsir...

Watching their performance in Kejurnas when Jo Novita paired Vita Marissa v Purwati/Meiliana is showed that Jo played well much better than Vita.
And the next day Jo paired with Lilyana lost to Polii/Mundiatsi. Polii played well in this match while Jo made many ue. Polii also win in mixed paired with Chandra beat Nova/Lilyana.

I agree that Polii is best INA WD and Polii/Jo is currently best combination. Just my opinion that Jo & Polii has same playing style, defencive & good placing. Much the opponent knew the weakest point on this pair, WPT/CEH or Saralee/Sathinee knew well it, they allways give high lob to them. Not surprised that WPT/CEH had trouble against new pair Polii/Vita, they are different style.
It's better Polii or Jo paired with Single player like Firda, Maria or Pia who has attacking play. But Vita isn't bad choice too.

INA girls takes 3rd game 21-13.

JPN girls played well in the first game, consistent and offensive. their play degrades as the match goes on and later on they started to rush their rallies after the INA learned their style. at the end, they were just outplayed.

while INA girls started so-so, they got more and more consistent and stayed calm to control the rally. they knew exactly where to place the shuttle to make the most damage.

Don't be too hard on Markis & Hendra. They're my favourite doubles pair because they play great. They'll be fine.

Anyone know what was the "real" reason for CH's withdrawal?

Yeah, they are also my fave, but this is the second time. Like their coach, Herry IP said, if this time Mk/HS lost, means KKK/TBH play better. I think not play better, but MK/HS did many UE.

there are 2 possibilities....either he is injured.....
or another plausable answer is match fixing again....well.....we have no proof.....since chen hong is retiring soon.....who knows....

Really happy today !! WMC and KKK/TBH won !! I think we have a chance to break the chinese domination in WS for the very very first time !! Just hope that WMC can play her normal game, and Zhu Lin run out of steam.

KKK/TBH(/Rexy) vs the legends. Wow !! Asian games champion against olympic games champions. I hope TBH can cut out his errors. He still seems to make more errors than KKK. Good luck to them tomorrow !!

One person breaking China WS domination??? ROFL, LMAO...:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
First of all, Zhu Lin has been way more dominant than WMC in this tournament plus her games were all short, and you expect her to run out of gas first???

If miracle happens, but then China still has ZN, XXF, and several others top WS players... how are you suppose to beat that kind of domination with a player whom has just reach her first final game appearance??? Get real...

Yannie, it was full house today. I expect tomorrow to be the same, as it's very rare to have two Malaysian finalists.

MS
Only one game today. Peter was sharp in a very competitive match against Kenneth. He does not look like he was hospitalised just a week ago.
Predicted title winner: Peter Gade

WS
Zhu Lin was dominant against Yao Jie, so it wasn't a very interesting match. But Zhu Lin looks sharp and fast. Wong Mew Choo's match against Eriko can be considered the best match of the day. Both games were tight, and both players played very interesting rallies. In the end, Wong just had that little bit extra. I also believe the will of the crowd got her a few points.
Predicted title winner: Zhu Lin (she looks like the next Zhang Ning). I hope that once again, I am proven wrong.

MD
Lee Yong Dae hobbled around on a bad ankle, so Tony/Chandra got a rest day today. KKK/TBH played a very fast game against Kido/Setiawan. The match was mostly drives, counter-drives, nets and counter-nets. The majority of the match was played at the front of the court. I think the Indons got dragged into playing the game that the Malaysians want. The normally steady Hendra Gunawan showed brief glimpses of brilliance but his game was riddled with unforced and slightly-forced errors, especially in the second game.
Predicted title winner: Tony Gunawan/Chandra Wijaya (I believe they will succeed in slowing down the game and frustrating the Malaysians)

WD
Ah, after the exit of the first ko, the other two ko's followed suit. The Indons thoroughly deserved the win. They played a very good attacking game, while the Japanese looked a little bit jaded. Gao/Huang was slightly troubled by the Koreans in the first game; the Koreans defended well and was like a dam holding back the water, but in the second game, the dam broke and the torrent of water was released.
Predicted title winner: Gao Ling/Huang Sui (just too strong)

XD
Gao/Zheng looks the top XD pair in the world right now, having no trouble dispatching of Widianto/Natsir. Both players combined very well and I feel they are better than Gao/Zhang Jun partnership. Emms is great as usual and Robertson is temperamental as usual. I expect a good final.
Predicted title winner: Gao/Zheng

okay, just finished reading thru the SF thread and sounds like it was another fantastic day of competition...i actually read some of the posts in this thread last night, but was too sleepy to write anything..anyways..
- The WD match between the JPN vs. INA pairs sounded quite entertaining. I don't know what happened to the JPN pair which caused them to lose focus, and the match, after being in control and enjoying the momentum from their QF's victory.
- WMC's victory must be the most pleasant surprise, esp. for the M'sian fans. Albeit the absences of ZN & XXF, the extensive training WMC had gotten from ZM, months earlier, must've really paid off. Now, will she continue her outstanding performance in the Final??
- The ankle injury suffered by LYD(Korea) is quite unfortunate as he is scheduled to perform in front of the home crowd next week.
- The lost of INA's XD pair of Nova/Lilyana was not a surprise. Like i've mentioned before, IMO, until Lilyana gets a new partner, their 2005 WC title could possibly be their biggest & last big win in their partnership.
how come another walkovewr for Chandra/Tony?
..hehe, talk abt a stroll in the park...:p :D ;)
*kwun, i noticed you've posted quite a few posts the last couple of days. Good to have you back posting again;)
