Yeah, I'm sad that my favorites lost but happy for Malaysia as it now has a formidable MD pair that can compete with the best.

Now they just need to show their consistency in winning titles.

Within 32 minutes, TG/CW's unbeaten record since their reunion is broken ... and they could have never imagined that the pair that is responsible for this was formed barely 10 months ago!

Now who say KKK/TBH could never be another TG/CW?

10 months?? i thought its just like for 6 months or less than that..sorry if im wrong..hehe..correct me though..

KKK/TBH paired up 1 month b4 Asiad

The first time the pair appeared in a international competition was Thomas Cup in last May. However, I think it's correct to say that their partnership became permanent 1 month b4 Asiad.

Pity that KKK/TBH is still not automatically qualified for the next few Superseries events ... They will need more wild card chances like this time round.

..could be, but remember they have Rexy on their side to guide and instruct them..What's interesting is, how will they fare if Rexy is not their coach??..
Anyways, i didn't see the match, but it's still the 1st leg of the SS tourney; many2 more tourneys to come..come next week, the fun should continue @ the Korean Open...We'll see if KKK/TBH can continue their good run there and see if Tony/Candra can also perform as well?? Perhaps a rematch is in order??.. :p :D ;)

I would like to add more weight to KKK/TBH's triumph as this is a new pair with young players - and whom they beat are a legendary pair who only lost once (to the pair who later became the world champion) since their reunion last year. If the winning Malaysian pair were the experienced CTF/LWW, or if the loser wasn't TG/CW but say CY/FHF, then I would strongly agree that it's just our usual "Jaguh Kampung" factor.

KKK/TBH a big congratulation for "half defending" your MO title. Yeah, I'm so happy that KKK and TBH beat the legendary Tony/Chandra in straight sets and make our country proud. The first qualifier ever who won the first super series title in 2007. May KKK n TBH can win more titles in the future.

... and I would consider KKK/TBH a more consistent pair than CY/FHF thus far as they only lost one game to TG/CW at Japan Open in the international scene since they paired up in last May. CY/FHF could even lose to the relatively unheralded OSH/TBS.

If KKK/Tbh can consistently enter at least the semi finals of any BIG tourney (eg.Super Series) for this whole year, they truly aren't flukes/typical M'sian periodic excellence. I have confidence in them but its too early to tell....we'll wait and see......

man... I'm glad that I made it home on time to watch the match! Tho I wish I was at the stadium to do the Mexican wave together.. ahahah

Congrats KKK/TBH... They're not at their best yet.. still got errors and miscommunication.. but.. imagine once they've improved and more experienced... fui! So, hope they'll keep improving and don't be LC neh.

Also proud of MC tho she lost. It's not easy to reach that far... I was laughing when the commentator was saying.. ah.. where is Chong Wei? to give his tips as well? ahaha..

Sometimes I wonder if it's easier to coach the Malaysian players... cuz' Malaysians understand Malay, English, Mandarin, Cantonese...and various Chinese dialects... (and also wonder ..eg. how Tan Kim Her coach his players from Korea? what language do they use?)

Saw how Rexy was talking to them in Indo and another talking to them in Mandarin (I wonder if they can listen when both are talking at the same time in different language).

Umm to be considered someone's killer you must consistently beat them, not just once or have an even record with that person.

The Malaysian pair of KKK/TBH did well today but to call them TG/CW killers is not quite fair as they are only even with TG/CW. A few other pairings are even with TG/CW including Fu/Cai, CTF/LWW, & Kim/Ha (I think).

Also, we must not get far ahead of ourselves in terms of head-2-head records. If I recall CTF/LWW has great head-2-heads against some of the legendary pairs such as Kim/Ha, TG/HH, CW/SB, TG/CW but they have not had much success in claiming titles.

Aren't them still not automatically qualified for the next couple of SS events ... yet? They might enjoy a big leap in world ranking after today's win but I wonder how soon they could make it to top-60 to at least be qualified for being SS qualifiers. Recall that they almost missed Malaysia Open due to their low ranking.

But why do you feel like Malaysia just clean sweep all the title at this tournament when all they gotta show is one MD title while crushing out on all the rest???

I support good players only, and not the country they represent. Look at Gade... he won this tournament despites the fact that he was hospitalized a week before the tournament, but all you guys give all credits to KKK/TBH, but no credit to Gade???

China dominated the other 3 fields, and no... it doesn't matter to anyone, because Malaysia is not involved in those situations...

Dude, who told u that Gade was not given credit for his hardfought win?
He was given one of the loudest applause in the stadium after his win.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong emerged champions in the Malaysian Open men's doubles today after beating the American-Indonesian duo of Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya.

In the match held at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium here, the Doha Asian Games gold medallists took only 34 minutes to sink the 2000 Olympic winners 21-15, 21-18.

In their previous encounter, the Malaysian pair lost in the Japan Open final in October last year where Tony/Candra won 21-15, 21-14.

Kien Keat, 20, and Boon Heong, 19, who trailed 1-3 at the beginning, managed to equalise and extend the lead before winning the set 21-15.

In the second set, both pairs exhibited well organised and aggresive plays and tried to overtake each other.

At one time, the Malaysian pair were ahead 15-10 but Tony/Candra successfully closed the gap. The game ended with 21-18 in the locals' favour.

Kien Keat said they did not face much problems in the first set but started to make mistakes in the second set out of exhaustion having played since the qualifying round last Tuesday.

"Then, we attacked less and tried to defend but persistent assaults by the opponents forced us to return aggresive and finally beat them," he told reporters.

Tony said the Malaysian pair were more aggresive now compared to when they faced each other in the Japan Open.

"Actually, Candra and I did not train enough together because I was in the United States while Candra in Indonesia. Being in the final today is good enough for us," he said.

For the win, Kien Keat/Boon Heong bagged US$14,400 (RM50,688) while Tony/Candra took home US$5,760 (RM20,160).

Wife of Deputy Prime Minister, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansur, gave away the prizes.

Also present to watch the Malaysian Open finals that offered a total of US$200,000 (RM708,000) cash prizes, were Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said and the country's former first lady, Tun Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

The Malaysian Open is the first leg of the Badminton World Federation's Super Series tour.

My so-called "idols" unbeatable??? Gade lose to Lin Dan like 80+% of the time. Fu/Cai=no comment, they just get owned more often than LYB like to see. Tony/Candra=They are just great, not unbeatable... Kim/Ra, close to unbeatable at times.:p

Not exactly a flame war, but something that makes this forum more interesting and exciting than just like agree with everyone and go with the crowd thing... and not to the extreme like Indra with Taufik, but gotta admit Indra is funny as hell though.

I agree with your observation of the predominant reactions on this board but disagree with your interpretation. Our spotlight was under KKK/TBH simply because they are the scene stealer who created the biggest upset of the day, while Gade is a "seasoned winner", whether or not his latest win is a hard-fought one or not.

Similarly, WMC got more credit because she has performed above expectation and showed exceptional guts, both in the final match as well as in the entire Malaysia Open, while ZL's win is expected.

You are a very reasonable person, and gotta give you credit for it.:D
What you mentioned make lots of sense, and it is also human nature to show favoritism. Just look at this forum when Lin Dan was upset-ed(spelling?) by Korea's Park Sung-Hwan(whom I believe 90% of BC members don't know how to spell his name or what he looks like) ... nobody even mentioned about his effort really, but then comes a thread "why Lin Dan lost" which mentioned the name "Taufik" more often than Park.SH himself???:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Also, even if someone is expected to win, shouldn't we at least give them some credit for winning when we praise our favorite player(s) about their "unexpected" wins??? It makes lots of sense, doesn't it?

Not sure what everyone is going on about. But I can say I'm very impressed with KKK/TBH's performance. Who wouldn't be? They're just making greater and greater achievements! TG/CW aren't unbeatable, but certainly still one of the greatest MD pairs ever.

I'm very pleased that PG won his match. Out of my 5 favourite MS players (not only based on their skill) - TH, CJ, LCW, PG, LD only PG made it through to the Finals. In fact only PG made it through to the SF. So I'm glad he won especially after what happened just before the tournament.

I'm not quite as excited about the other events personally although I've got to say Zhu Lin is looking very impressive. She should go far.

Favoritism is one possible explanation to some of the postings here but in general, I don't think all of us bother to thrive for fairness and comprehensiveness when we post our reactions, i.e., if you praise one winner, then you MUST praise the other 4; or once you praise a loser, you MUST praise its winner as well. We are not writing a scientific report. We usually only react to those who impress us the most in the game in posting quick comments (we don't have the time and energy to post a lengthy message to ensure fairness and comprehensivenes in order to make bananaboy happy) - and that's not necessarily because we favor who and who.

Amazing display again from KKK/TBH. Much better performance compared to the semi-final. The future certainly looks bright for these guys now.

If they keep this up, I daresay they are going to be M'sia's best doubles team EVER (IMHO they are already playing much better than Razif/Jalani, Soon Kit/Kim Hock and Choong/Lee).

It's so dramatic to see KKK/TBH played in today's game. Their bodies were flexing a lot like elastic, flying here and there for the great save, and speedy played against TG/CW.

Enjoyed to see Rexy putting his hand around TBH's waist when giving advices..hehe :D Looked so much like daddy's-teaching-his-kids and I owez caught the last word "faham? faham?"(in Malay which means understood) from him.

Ah, so much fun to see KKK roared like a lion when there's a mistake fr him causing INA leading 3-1 in the 1st set semi yesterday

to KKK and TBH, congratulations... you might as well replace tony and candra in the future:)

to tony and candra, spend some time more training together... the world today has much much talent than it has ever had... it's not like old days when your body condition feels great and there are few players to challenge you...:) anyhow, congratulations for showing the whole world how badminton should be played:D

from this prediction, i can see why people are being so subjective if giving predictions regarding the players from their home country.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE FOR WONG MEI CHO AND KIEN KIAT / BOON HEONG win the title.
just watch live on RTM 1 and see how CHANDRA / TONY and Zhu Lin thrash their opponent.
regarding rexy's quote thay kien kiat and boon heong are much better than candra / tony... it is absolutely rubbish. those pair have won olympic, world and all others major title. what have kien kiat and boon heong won ?? when they lose big today, rexy should shut his mouth !!!

...just one statement : The barn DID BURN to the ground...:p :D :) ;)

Wow, i bet it was a truly exhilirating day for all the M'sian fans who were watching at the stadium. Finally, no more strolling in the park got Tony&Candra.:p May i say, pandemonium is the appropriate word. Once again, my congrats to the new young pair of KKK/TBH, they deserve the title, their 2nd major title in as many months. Looking realistically, they still have lots to learn and many more experiences to gain. But one thing is for sure, they do have the hunger, enthusiasms & willingness to learn in playing together.
Anyways, back to my earlier prediction of the chances of Tony&Candra to lose, well, i wouldn't say the veterans "self-destructed" but i would say most likely their ages has caught up with them. Imagine, the playing age difference between those 2 pairs is roughly 10 yrs. apart:rolleyes: :p
*sigh* Sometimes i wonder, what if Tony never left and still played with Candra 5-6 yrs ago. And now trying to pick up where they left off?? Who knows where would they stand in IBF/BWF's history. :p :( Those long lost yrs *sigh*....Anyhoo..:p
- For Peter Gade, well, what can i say. He not only deserves the title, but earns my vote as having the best story in the whole tourney.
- For Zhu Lin, no XXF & ZN as participants, no problem. She just keeps the winning tradition going.
- For Gao & Huang, still the pair to fear and beat...
- For Zheng & Gao, is this the new XD wonder for CHN?? Personally, i thought they never missed a beat with Zheng as Gao's new partner.
Overall, congrats to all the winners, it was a fun Finals. One down and 12 more to go. On a personal note, it's too bad we weren't able to watch the MD portion.:p
Now, shall we move on and enjoy the upcoming Korean Open, where the KOR contingent is waiting for all the "tired" bodies to compete there?;) ..and let's all hope for the same exciting and fantastic competitions as what the MO brought us..;) :D

let's see after kkk/tbh losing tonight.

Hi budich,

Perhaps now you can understand what Rexy Mainaky was saying before the match.

Most of us @Badminton Central know how experienced and capable TG/CW are. Their skill levels are highly respected. And Rexy knows them well, back in Indonesia.

But what Rexy said was that the great speed, the good defence and the good attack of KKK/TBH could help them beat TG/CW.

Well, it's now recorded in history that it was a match to remember. :):):)

Cheers... chris@ccc

I don't think the Korea Open will have the drama we see in Malaysia Open ...
-No first round matchup between Taufik vs Lin Dan.
-I don't want to see Gade in hospital again.
-KKK/TBH will not win the title(hard to repeat right after you won one)
-Korea is not Malaysia, the holly ground of badminton. Not the same atmosphere.
-Lin Dan will go far this time.
Of course, my opinion is subjected to change if Malaysian players advance far :D

Umm, they are not playing competitively like when they were on the Indonesian team. This is just for their own leisure as it conveniently fits their schedule.

Plus, they each live in different countries and must work to support themselves and their family so they do not have time to practice together anymore.

If you carefully read Tony's comments at the end, you'll see that he's no longer as competitive as when he was in the Indonesian team. They are happy with the results being that they do not have time to train together anymore.

"Actually, Candra and I did not train enough together because I was in the United States while Candra in Indonesia. Being in the final today is good enough for us," he said.

I must say that you Malaysian fans are really positive with some good results. I never remember this much commotion when Fu/Cai beat TG/CW in the 2006 Hong Kong Open. This is almost like when Malaysia beat Korea to land a spot in the semifinal of the Thomas Cup. Let's hope that they can keep this up. :)

The Malaysians have a special place in the history of badminton, from winning the first Thomas Cup to producing all-time legends like Eddy Choong and many other memorable achievements. They(M'sians) simply love their badminton just like how the Brazillians love their football. Badminton to most Malaysians is more than a game, it is a source of national pride & honor b'coz of the history of the game in that country. The atmosfere is like a football stadium :o

Great final!!

MS : For the past two years, we've had unlikely winners. Last year with LCW coming from way behind to slay LD, and this year with Gade literally winning it from the hospital bed. Even Chinese walkover tactics (if any) didn't help, though I can't help feeling sorry for Bao. Also +ve performances from the oldies, Jonassen and WCH. Other MAS MS flopped badly, esp KBH.

WS : Great inroads by WMC, though she fell at the final hurdle. What can I say, the Great Wall might crack over time (and illness), but it won't budge yet. It will be more difficult once ZN and XXF returns ....

XD : Zheng Bo provides a lot of firepower to the equation, but it is Gao Ling who dominates! Nathan Robertson don't seem to be too fired up for the challenge. Moody player, I suppose.

WD : Gao Ling is just GREAT!!! Definite female version of Professor Park Joo-bong with great tactical brain. Excellent performance by Indonesian and Professor Park's cute girls. Vita Marissa brings height and power to the equation, only equalled by Lee Hyo-Jung. Chinese girls were smart to push her out back in 2nd and 3rd games, but they now know that they are not invincible. MAS pair a big letdown, maybe Coach Cheah should get some pointers from Coach Rexy.

MD : Excellent performance from both pairs. I only see a few unforced errors, esp from TBH late in the game. Most points were won on great placings/openings/drives, not on outright smashes. For once Malaysians dominated the net, not because Tony is not playing well, but because of KKK's better reaction speed. 2nd game was a thriller, point-for-point exchange until 8-8, and a late burst from INA-USA pair. Both pairs put other pairs to shame, MAS pair for being so young and successful and INA-US pair for their great run without having much training.

This is because they r more of an all rounder player than CaiFu. Rock solid defense, flat drives and netplay were also just as good and not to mention their avg age is only 20, still hv long way to go...

Moreover, Cai/Fu was already an established, celebrated pair (and potential world champions by that time - and they actually made it a month later) when they beat Tony/Chandra last year while Koo/Tan had only played their third tournament as a pair. So, my question for academic interest: If Koo were to partner his old pal Chan this time round, could they even make it to final, not to mention beating Tony/Chandra?

..from my observation(and memory) of the match, i thought it was Polii who was whipping her boomstick (as some of you in here might say;)) more and was the stable one??..While Marissa, on the other hand, was the "weaker" player and made more errors??.. ;)

wow! i had a blast watching the semi finals and the finals. actually only three finals cought my attention. the MS, MD and WS. as you might have guessed, i was not really interested in the mixed doubles and the WD since no malaysian played in the finals. so whoever won, i say good for them so congratulations Chinese teams. So starting with the MS, though i like both player, i was rooting for peter gade for two reasons. first, he was sick when he arrived and coming that far was an achievement on it's own and to watch him battle it out, fair and square with kenneth shows his determination. second, because the chinese did not play. i dont like that. be a sportsman and play. even with your countryman. you should battle it out fair and square. having extra rest is not fair. plus bao is younger than peter and thus it is twice unfair in my opinion. so i rooted for peter and i was so excited to see him clinched the title. good for you peter gade. i think both player did their best. a very exciting MS final. after peter gade won, i was rooting for mew choo in the WS. i know the chinese player is good but looking at how mew choo fight to the last point in the semi makes me see that there is a possibility for her to win. alas, she did her very best and as she made more mistakes than the chinese player, she lost. but i see a good future for her. a last, at least, malaysia, representated! hope she'll do well in other Opens. and last but never least, my current favourite doubles player (as with the rest of malaysian citizens) KKK and TBH. unlike WMC that i believe could win due to the home crowd on her side, i believe KKK and TBH could win it with their skills and exciting play. no matter where they play, i think they have a good chance of winning. this is apparent to me during the semi finals. where they might have beaten the indonesian team but people are still saying it was luck and they would have a hard time winning that match. but they showed their ability and won that match. superbly i might add. and thus i really believe that they would win the finals even though everybody said TG and CW with kick their *toot*. because i know the ranking means nothing. and i know they are hungry for this win. and i know on top of that they have the home crowd on their side. the only thing that surprises me was the straight sets win. i believe they were gonna win it but they would have to struggle against one of the top doubles teams in the world today. granted tony and candra was a little off in the final but i think KKK and TBH rocks! i know they will not win all the tournament, they will surely lose some, but by george, i know they will give all the top teams a run for their money and will i predict, be in the top 8 by the end of this year. maybe even top four. but that would depends on how they calculate the rankings. GOOOOOOOOOOO! KKK AND TBH! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! make us proud. after razif-jailani and cheah soon kit-soo beng kiang, this is the most promising doubles team i have seen. maybe we'll get the thomas cup back. he he he.

I think Soon Kit/Kim Hock was a better pair than Soon Kit/Beng Kiang, not only because of the former's Olympic Silver (well, they were stopped by Rexy and his pal Ricky in a narrow margin ... and now both Rexy and Soon Kit are Kim Hock's subordinates) but also their overall career achievements. Let's hope KKK/TBH could at least repeat CSK/YKH's feat in the Olympics ... with a former silver medalist as their chief coach and a gold medalist as their coach, can't they?

XD:
Gao Ling looks set to dominate the XD world with a new partner, Zheng Bo, who proves more steady than the clowning Zhang Jun. Robertson managed to cut down on his errors and impose a commanding influence from the back, making it a good match. In the end, I feel the Chinese were simply that little bit better. Gao Ling was as usual smilingly happy with the win, and I think Zheng Bo is quietly happy to have been paired with Gao Ling and start winning some titles. I believe this pairing is smartly formulated for Beijing 2008.

MS:
Peter Gade mostly in control. Sharp as ever. No sign of headache. He was the second most ecstatic winner of the day, closely matching KKK/TBH. He even threw his racquet into the crowd. During the match, I think he got a slight majority of support from the crowd. (Of course, the Chinese usually have good support in Malaysia, although that has waned due considerably to Li Yongbo, I think.) I was emotionally supporting Peter as well because of his near-miraculous performance after hospitalisation, and also because I feel bad for Chen Hong (who I think would be a bigger foe for Peter to handle) for allegedly being sidelined for the sake of Chinese strategy once again.

WS:
Zhu Lin was simply very sharp. But in fact, she was the one who looked out of breath. A lot of early rallies were simply energy-sapping. It was obvious that she was taking a lot of time between rallies while WMC wanted to start the next rally as soon as possible. However, towards the end of the match, WMC failed on capitalise on her better fitness. Instead of extending the rallies, she chose to smash, which were mostly easily saved by ZL without much effort. Also, the numerous easy points rewarded by WMC must have a very positive psychological effect on ZL. ZL, with her height and solid strokes, reminds me a lot of Zhang Ning, even down to the fact that she can still play hell of a game when seemingly exhausted. As for WMC, my impression of her is that she can retrieve just about anything, similar to squash's Nicol David (also about same height and build), who was dubbed the Energizer bunny. But I feel WMC needs to develop weapons to go further.

WD:
Good fight by the Indonesians. I believe the Chinese will now have to take Greysia/Vita very seriously; they may even be a bigger threat than the Koreans Lee/Lee. The Indons repeatedly attacked the Chinese weak point, Huang Sui, and she was pressured to make a lot of mistakes. However, the quality of Gao/Huang is obvious and even though troubled, still romped home the title.

MD:
By far the best match of the day, as expected. The match was reminiscent of the SF between the Malaysians and Markis/Hendra. Even the scoreline was the same if I am not mistaken. I thought that Tony/Candra would try to slow down the game, but the match was mostly to see who was faster. And the Malaysians were faster more times than not. Both pairs played very well. The rallies were mostly very exciting and high-tempo. A lot of the game occured at the net. KKK as usual likes to rush things at the net, and TBH proved to be very good at the net also. Tony who is used to controlling the net, marginally lost the net battle. Candra proved to be the weakest among the four, making more unforced errors than usual. KKK made the customary amount of errors due to his habit of rushing the shots (a habit which also wins points). For me, TBH was the revelation. He controlled the game even better than master Tony. His strokes were cool and composed. He knew the best shot before he executed it well. My fellow traveller from Singapore, Nicky (ex-Vietnamese national player who accompanied Loh and me to KL) mentioned that if Tony were to partner TBH, the match would be over very quickly, and I agree. At the end of the second game, after KKK/TBH have opened up a big lead, Tony/Candra staged a comeback, probably due to desperation and also the Malaysians' nervousness. But in the point-a-rally system, once KKK/TBH got one or two more points, it was practically over.

My answer to that is a resounding "NO!". I admit my observation may be limited or even downright wrong, but I feel TBH is the best doubles player in Malaysia right now, although the lack of experience shows up a bit.

-KKK/TBH will not win the title(hard to repeat right after you won one)
..frankly, playing in front of the home crowd support, the M'sia Open was, IMO, KKK's/TBH's "best" chance to get a win over the veteran pair..And they certainly took advantage of that opportunity..;)

One too many cheeseburgers for Tony...:p
But why do you feel like Malaysia just clean sweep all the title at this tournament when all they gotta show is one MD title while crushing out on all the rest???

I support good players only, and not the country they represent. Look at Gade... he won this tournament despites the fact that he was hospitalized a week before the tournament, but all you guys give all credits to KKK/TBH, but no credit to Gade???

China dominated the other 3 fields, and no... it doesn't matter to anyone, because Malaysia is not involved in those situations... Actually WMC got more credit for being the loser of the final than the winner ZL herself from this forum... like WTF???
- Tony/candra were considered unbeatable, thats why MD was talked about a lot

- as for PG and ZL not talked about as much even though they've won their gold medal, try to look at where all the ppl are from when they post, you will know why, most(if not all) are malaysian

- china's winning is expected, and dislike from other countries are expected as well from the previous statement, everyone want to dominate, but others will always say domination is not healthy (this is the same if you look at it economically, monopoly is never good to the society(with some exceptions), but who doesn't want to be monopoly? :P )

- an extreme case would be indra, our beloved TH fan, have you see him appears in the forum when TH loses? or how much he posts if TH wins? this explains alot, translating from 1 very-enthusetic person to a group isn't too difficult, eh?

They've beaten other veteran pairs outside of Malaysia before, but TG/CW is of course a much tougher one.

Just checked the new world ranking point scheme and realize that after their MO win, KKK/TBH will enjoy a big leap in WR to somewhere between 46th-55th place when the new WR list is announced on coming Thursday. That makes them automatically qualified for the qualifying rounds in the SS events of their choice in the future instead of having to wait for higher-ranked pairs to give up. However, they will need to at least reach two more SS semi-finals to be ranked among Top-28 and automatically qualified for the main draw.

Yep, that's what I thought too, TBH's defence is rock solid this time, compared to Japan Open (Razif/Jalani are still better, though). KKK has better focus and stopped playing fancy shots, that too contributed to their success.

Spare a thought to Tony/Candra too, they contributed to making this a very high quality match. Beats the Asian Games matches hands down. We hope to see them again at least until Beijing Olympics.

When you play like this, the audience always appreciates whether you win or lose.

First of all, congratulations to the winners!
I agree that Boon Heong is Rexy's favourite son. I think at one point I heard him telling Boon Heong " not to give up and have more confidence, fight fight fight". I think Boon Heong was a little shaken by the Tony/Candra. Each time Boon Heong wins a match, he will look at Rexy first! It was simply a beautiful thing.

I knew it wouldn't be easy for Tony/Candra to win cos kkk/tbh plays like amoeba. Their tactics were unexpected and they were fast. They also aim their shots only to Candra, one tecnique which was already planned.

I can't wait for the Korean Open. Think Malaysia is grooming a lot of new doubles pair.

Meow Choo is not match to Zhulin, and it was obvious if you see they way both of them play in other matches.

Can someone tell me if Korean Open will be aired live? Or can I watch online?

Agreed. I think it is because Mew Choo does not have a strong 'smash' weapon (no strength). Her tools comprising of long rallies, trick drop shots, and good placements are good but are never going to hurt Zhulin or Zhang Ning in any big way. And this was capitalised on by Zhulin.

I think it will be hard for her to beat stronger opponents like Zhulin or Zhang Ning, who have stronger smashes than hers. She needs to work the shuttle faster and play better net shots. And also go for body plays to win quick points. Long rallies with Zhulin can let her down -- coz most times it ended with Zhulin winning a smash or an acute drop shot.

You are absolutely right! Being M'sian I always support our own players and pround of their achievements. It is too early to crown the 2 young lads with only 2 titles in hands. Ricky must bring them back to ground and continue to improve their games. I still feel that KKK/TBH still lacking of power in their smashes unlike Kido/Setiawan, Cheah Soon Kiat and Ricky and Rexy. KKK/TBH performed superbly yesterday. Tony/Candra can't match up with them in terms of speed although they still played wonderfully. They took the loss in their stride and certainly won the respect of the crowd. Just hope that KKK/TBH can maintain their winning streak in KO and there are more thrilling matches to come. At the same time, I am disappointed with the Chinese team. There had been a number of occasions that a walkover was conceded at the semifinal stage when there was a all Chinese encounter. It happened during the World Junior WS semifinal in 2004 as well as a number of semifinal or final that involved their WD in a few open tourneys two/three years back and the latest one was Chen Hong-Bao CL match. I just read in the Chinese website that Chen Hong is going to compete in the Korea Open, what a "surprise"! I really feel bad for this guy.

Typical Chinese "kiasu" strategy but ended up BCL didn't capture the title too. In fact the dennish shown tremendous sportmanship, Peter was dragged for 3 sets before beating Kenneth. Thomas L could have asked either Peter or Kenneth to be"injured" too and conserves energy for the final. Everyone knows Peter was having touble with his health. Peter is the true champion and same goes to the Thomas L!

Agreed. I think it is because Mew Choo does not have a strong 'smash' weapon (no strength). ..........

Yes I would say you have read the situation accurately. Mew Choo's offensive weapons are few and far between, and the ones she have are all very weak. For her height she has surprisingly flawed footwork. She cant seem to be able to get to her opponent's drop and net shots in time.
As she is not physically strong, I am of the opinion that she should learn and master the half smash from the master, Misbun Sidek! Now if only she can get Morten Frost to teach her footwork!

To my understanding, Malsysians are some of the most passionate badminton fans in the world. So, any kind of +ve result would chalk up a carnival atmosphere!

Yikes! How can you not mention that the greatest singles player Malaysia has ever produced is the Maestro, Wong Peng Soon! His nemesis was Dr. Dave Freeman, America's finest player till date.

I remembered those days when Hafiz Hashim was doin well, like winning the All-England, Swiss Open etc....He was good for that few months & now just look at him. Thats why im worried that KKK/Tbh might (im not ssaying they will) end up like him.

Your fears are unfounded. Try to read up a little more on Malaysian politics and you will realize that what happened to Hafiz is not gonna happen to TBH/HHH. Hafiz is bumiputera, TBH/KKK are Chinese! ;)

Hi bigmojo,

I am glad that you mentioned Wong Peng Soon and Dave Freeman.

We should thank these 2, and many others, who have brought our beloved Badminton in the limelight.

Well,i don't think we need to discuss and comparing who is better between two of them here.:p In my opinion, both of them are equally good coz without each other, they won't win the match.Doubles game is cooperate between two player and we are not fair to say who is better in the game.;) Each of them depends on each other to win the game.

Ya, agree. If really want to compare who is better, u should not never watch double matches again. U should watch single match instead. For individual skills, they are not considered as the best double player yet, but I can say their combination is very powerful.

Why not? Koo and Chan are capable of beating any top seed players. Just that they are not as consistent as the current pair KKK/TBH.
If Tony were to partner his Vietnamese pal from USA, could they always make it to the final?

Hi ck1981,

Correct...... A Doubles player is to help the other partner to form/work as an effective/efficient partnership.

It is the combined force that makes a partnership works well.

The steep half-smash needs a taller person for proper execution. Maybe Mew Choo could improve on her upper body strength instead to add more sting to her smashes. But footwork is difficult to improve, it goes with the basics such as how to hold a racquet. When Malaysia first engaged a foreign coach in the late 80s, he complained that our squad had all the basics wrong.

The Danes are very economical with their movement. Probably why we still see them in top condition when they reach their 30s.

Just seen the WS final video, the scoreline didn't reflect how hard Zhu Lin toiled. Still young, but she was already breathless at the end of the 1st game. I would have expected all Chinese players to have excellent stamina, much like the Koreans and Japanese.

No doubt they are fast especially KKK in front of the net...

Compared to their M'sian predecessors, I think KKK/TBH are much better overall, in terms of speed, tactical awareness, pure aggresiveness and tough mental strength. They are superstars already for sure. They dont have to win everytime they play a tournament. Which doubles pair is capable of that?

I noticed that too --- her tiredness. Zhulin is a reasonably big gal and I think it is expected that she will tire faster than Mew Choo. I agree that Mew Choo should take on a bit of weights training to beef up her upper body --- she is too skinny. Besides it will help her look good. LOL

..(ok, since the other thread was locked and i can't reply back, i'm posting specifically bigmojo's reply to my post here. Hope mods/kwun won't mind. Don't worry, nothing personal from me, just replying back)..

I am not questioning the 'greatness' of TG/CW. Without a doubt they are already legends in the badminton world. All I am saying is that age has caught up with them and like it or not they must give way to the young & rising stars like KKK/TBH. Do you really think TG/CW would have won the 3rd set if there had been one? Of course this is pure conjecture but given the age difference and physical condition of the two pairs I have to say that TG/CW would have lost. Dont set your sights too high on a rematch between TG/CW and KKK/TBH at the upcoming Korean Open. Unless the draw is such that they meet in the early rounds as I dont think TG/CW will make it to the finals.

The recent Malaysian Open may have witnessed the tail end of the playing carreers not just of legends like TG/CW but also the likes of PGC, KJ, TH, WCH etc. I daresay that the upcoming Olympics may just be the last hurrah for some of the names I just mentioned. I think Zhang Ning is also in the same boat. Genius is one thing but father time cannot be denied.
bigmojo, first, don't get me wrong. I'm not piggybacking, but if you've by any chance read, I, myself mentioned the same thing also in another post in this same thread. That perhaps Tony's & Candra's ages have caught up with them. See:
http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40071&page=35 (post#613)
I also concur(as i've posted in my other older posts) that some of the current veterans that are still competing will most likely see their last last shining moments in next yr's Olympics, probably even sooner. That's just reality.;)
However, wondering if Tony & Candra "would have won the 3rd set if there had been one?", well, eventhough it's pure conjecture, but i myself can't really nor never said they would nor wouldn't won it. I also don't recall(if my memory serves me right or if other posters can correct me) any replies from posters that "predicted" if the match had gone to 3rd set, Tony & Candra would've lost or won. cooler, and to a certain extent a few others, only wondered the question or possibility of what would've happened, but never predicted. However, the only "prediction" so far, as i can see, has come from your post(as i've highlighted above). IMO, predictions are fine and it's completely anyone's right to do so, but i'm sure you know how predictions go (if you've read back on this thread, remember the pre-Finals predictions by many posters here on the MD match, for whatever reasons, how many of them predicted TG&CW to win?). And by saying that if "they had gone to 3rd set, Tony & Candra would have lost", IMO, that's almost as bold a prediction as what the posters did prior to the Finals. Remember, after they had lost, no other posters "predicted" TG&CW would've won, if they had gone to rubber set, except coming from your post.
As far as :
1. "Don't set your sights too high on a rematch between TG/CW and KKK/TBH at the upcoming Korean Open" and
2. "Unless the draw is such that they meet in the early rounds as I dont think TG/CW will make it to the finals."
Well, i'll leave those two "predictions" to whatever outcome they'll present itself. And i'm sure you(and the rest of us) have seen how our predictions can go..;)

Toilet break, ENG in the lead 11-6.

Funny word you used "Toilet". :) Normally they will have not time to go to the toilet if they have to listen to their coach's feedback. But they certainly need the "Towel" to wipe their perspiration! :D

I think the success of Malaysian badminton players is not an issue of ethnicity. I happen to pick Hafiz Hashim as my example of a periodic performer but I could have picked Lee Chong Wei too (who has now not won any major title for quite sometime). Anyway, lets monitor the progress of KKK & TBH too see whether they would end up as periodic performers too.

No wonder I didn't see you at the stadium watching in person. I hope TBH's father was there to celebrate such a great win by his son and KKK.

I wonder whose talking rubbish now that the young Malaysian pair has won convincingly! They were too fast for the veterans and were able to match them in all departments.

Congrats to KKK/TBH! We should see more victories from them this year! :)

yeah, sorry i bite the bait. i should really just ignore the ignorance of bigmojo. i have never seen any badminton player as malay or chinese. i support malaysian players regardless except when they play like they dont want to win. i always supported wong choong hann because he is always a fighter. and ong ewe hock. i still remember him flying around the court. and foo kok keong. and i have seen players who seemed like they lost the will to fight. i am dissapointed in hafiz. i know he could do better. lee chong wei too when he was playing bao chun lai. maybe he was injured or something but he lacks the fighting spirit. so dont attach any malaysian player to any label because they are ALL MALAYSIAN PLAYER. and i am proud of every one of them. and i sincerely hope none of them are periodic performer or as we say in malaysia "jaguh kampung". i wish for them the kind of domination a hard working player deserves.

He, he, toilet break is more interesting than time-out or coffee break ....:D

How about changing the mid-game break to a proper timeout system, which could be called by the coach at any time in the game? More interesting, no?

On a more serious note, all this bickering about Tony/Candra's defeat to Koo/Tan and glorifying the win endlessly shows no respect to Tony/Candra. They have achieved so much, together and with other partners. Not that it does any justice to Koo/Tan and Rexy, might even harm their progress.

Last time it was all about Taufik, LCW and Lin Dan. What's next, why can't we just enjoy the game and be responsible forummers/supporters.

You know who I respect the most? Players that work so hard, with little or no natural talent, who might not even win majors or ever be legends, but who always manage to trouble the best players. Players who always gave their all like Ilie Sumirat, Foo Kok Keong, Xiong Guobao, Jonassen, Wong Mew Choo, the 3 cute Jap KOs etc.

Have you ever seen current players vomit on court from sheer exhaustion like Foo Kok Keong, and kept on playing?

U're right. TG/CW is still one of the best and the most respected pair of all time, 1 defeat will not make them less of that nor shameful. They just lost to a better player that day, but even KKK/TBH still shows respect to them in the interviews after the match. Rexy is aware of wat the limelight will bring to the youngsters, thats why he nvr gave any colouful praises to them to make sure they stay clear headed & focus.

Eh, what do you mean? I think Eriko has lots of natural talent.

Among all, I think Foo Kok Keong has the least natural talent, but I like to see him play. He has the talent of determination and willpower.

What has been quoted here is very important to keep the unity of Malaysian fans and even the Malaysian national players. When racism comes into any sport, it totally destroys the beauty of the game! Whether a player is a Chinese, Malay or some other ethnic group member of Malaysia the most important thing to bear in mind is that they play under the banner of Malaysia and not as Malaysian "Chinese" or Malaysian "Malay" or whatsoever...It is understandable that there will always be some form of ethnic tension in a multicultural society like Malaysia but that shouldn't be brought into sport especially a sport which Malaysia can be proud of, badminton.
