A report by Ellen Li on the team match between Singapore and Australia at the recent AYOF:
Singapore too good for Australia in the badminton
19 January 2007
The final round of the badminton team event was played this morning on Day 3 of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival with Australia losing to Singapore 0-5.
In the mixed doubles, Leanne Choo and Kenny Ng pushed Li En Colleen Goh and Zhao Jiang Terry Yeo to a close first set, losing 20-22. The Singaporeans sealed the match winning the second set 9-21.
“The match was pretty good but I don’t think I played as well as I could, making a few errors at the crucial moments,” Ng said.
The men’s singles saw Samuel Ho lose to Yong Zhao Ashton Chen 5-21 9-21.
Intense rallies took place throughout the women’s singles with Erica Pong up against Goh. With both girls winning one set each, consistency and accuracy proved to be the key to sealing the match and Pong lost 21-18 9-21 17-21.
It was another close game in the women’s doubles between Aussie pair Leanne Choo and Louise McKenzie and Singapore pair Ting Ting Thng and Vanessa Jill Poo.
Despite a last-minute chase by Choo and McKenzie in the third set, Singapore’s shot variation allowed them to win the match 21-15 14-21 19-21.
In the men’s doubles, Ng and Ma took on Yeo and Zi Liang Derek Wong but lost 5-21 8-21.
With the conclusion of the badminton team event, Australia Gold finished in 6th place with China taking the gold.
“As a team, they’ve really matured with the badminton played. They’re a young team with not a lot of international experience and their performances have been above what we expected,” Andrew Perks, coach of Australia Gold said.
Individual events will begin this afternoon at the Sydney Sports Hall in Homebush.

I spent the week with the Australian Team. I have to agree with Perks that our team matured through the week. We were very competitive in our matches against Singapore and Great Britain. I see good things to come for most of the players in the team.
To see some lighter moments of our trip, see the following videos uploaded on YouTube:
1) B Ma finds his long lost twin

2) Erica runs over innocent kid (distorted - I dropped the camera laughing so hard!)

3) Oli forgets to rest her arm through the medal presentation (sorry I cut out the part where her arm was still up while the anthem was sung!)

4) The dining hall interview (audio isn't very good in this one)

5) The team's final bus trip

I've got video of some of the semi-final action but some of the commentary needed to be censored, so I didn't upload it :D

chris-ccc 02-03-2007, 08:10 AM Greetings,
I am just disappointed that only 6 nations took part in the main team events in Badminton, at the Youth Olympics @Sydney 2007, and they are China, UK, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and host, Australia.
Where are the other stronger Badminton nations...... such as, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, the Netherlands, USA, etc......:confused::confused:
Let us get Badminton to be more appreciated. :):):)
Cheers... chris@ccc

Don't be too disappointed. I'm sure improvements will come as those nations start to see how valuable this event is. It is still quite a new idea to us all...many members here didn't even know what an AYOF competition was until last month...
Firstly the nations who accepted the invitation came with some of their best juniors players
Secondly, the invitation was extended to more countries, but whether or not those associations accept, that's a different story. I presume there would be different stories behind their decision (eg. travel costs since australia is so far away from some of these nations; or if the players were preparing for other seasonal tournaments etc)
Thirdly, it has been a vast improvement from when the first badminton event was held at the AYOF, when there were only 3 nations competing (ie. New Zealand, New Caledonia and Australia). From memory, Australia took out gold, silver and NZ the bronze...now that wasn't too much of a spectator's joy to watch.
I look forward to the next AYOF.

Thanks Maz,
Thank you for your info/insight. :):):)
BTW, are you going back home in August to umpire for World Championships @KL 2007 ???
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games group (Loh, Kim, kong-19, BadFever, etc...) are talking/planning of a reunion there.
Cheers... chris@ccc

Hi cooler,
You are funny !!! :):):)
Many of the juniors played at the World Junior Championships.
There...... they cannot hide their secret weapon-in-the-making. :p:p:p
Cheers... chris@ccc
maybe they're just creating 'extra' secret weapons...haha :D
I haven't planned my trip to KL yet because I'm not sure what other tournaments I should be committing to this 2007.
Given a chance, I would really like to go though!
