I'm now at hcyong's house in KL watching the soccer match betwee Liverpool and Chelsea, which Liverpool is leading by 2 nil.

I thought I should spend some time posting some pics of the SF which we watched today. Of course, Malaysia is rejoicing over the WS SF victory by Wong Mew Choo over Eriko of Japan and the MD win by KKK and TBH over their Indonesian counterparts. So at least there will be Malaysian players who will feature in the finals of the WS and MD. To some extent, this compensates for the loss of reigning champion, Lee Chong Wei in the MS.

Oh you think so? Thanks. Actually I didn't do much, everything's about the same. I still use the 'programme mode' and just click away never attempting the manual settings.

What has changed is that I've replaced my aperture which was faulty and at the same time had my camera serviced. And during the MO, I sat at a higher position :) .

Ya...more to come as I'm now back at the office.

The MD final match between KKK/TBH and Tony/Candra was played last yesterday but had most of us spell-bound. It even eclipsed the MS match betwee Peter Gade and Bao CL. The younger pair's speed was too much for the veteran Indonesians to handle.

In the WD, Indonesia's Marissa and Polii played above themselves and gave the Chinese, Gao Ling and Huang Shi a fright in the first game before succumbing to their experience in the last two games. But M and P have already made an impact and will certainly be a force to reckon with in future. :)

Yes, I was just as disappointed that the Indonesians lost very badly, 8-21,
9-21. Quite ulike them, especially to this new Chinese partnership. However, Zheng does carry a big smash and Gao sets up well for him.

In the Final, against England's pair of Emms/Robertson, Zheng's smash was nullified by Robertson's equally devastating power. The match went into a rubber and had the Chinese not wake up in the third game, it could have been victory to England. Gao Ling redeemed herself from a lack luster secome game performance and was hurting the English with her intelligent net play and cross court placings in the final game. It let Zheng employ his favourite smash to a better advantage.

You're welcome. :)

BTW, the tenth picture shows Terry, our BC member who appears a good replacement for his good friend, ants, looking pretty smart as one of the VIPs with the Malaysian players. Terry was rather kind to pick us up at a petrol station and bring us, including BFer hcyong, to the hotel which he helped book for me and my other Singapore friend.

Hcyong is Malaysian and was particularly helpful in accompanying us during the three days at KLBA and eating out together. On the finals day, he drove us, including his younger brother and a friend from Kuantan, to the stadium and later to Pudu Jaya for our bus back to Singapore. He couldn't join us as he had arranged a night train back to Singapore to report for work the next day. We also enjoyed our short visit to his house to watch the Liverpool versus Chelsea soccer match.

Earlier, on quarter findals day, we also met kokcheng and his Alor Star buddies, including the fathers of Tan Boon Heong and Kenn Lim. ;)

During the quarter finals third and final game, the Chinese pair of Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen pounded the Japanese fortress time and again to no avail. Kumiko Ogura/Reiko Shiota defended stoutly with all their might and almost gave way, but they held on to win by a narrow margin. You can see how happy they are in winning.

This Japanese pair and their singles teammate, Eriko Hirose, are a delight to watch because they appear to be the most fashionable of all the teams in the competition. Just see for yourself. ;)

It came during the QF. Admittedly LCW was at a mental disadvantage having lost to BCL recently. Despite the huge vocal and 'kompang' support by the local fans who also cheered in unison with the balloon bangers, LCW remained a pale shadow of himself and the inevitable outcome came sooner than expected. LCW surrendered his crown in straight games of 14-21, 18-21 while Wong Mew Choo made recent history by marching into the finals. :(

Hi Chu

Nice to hear from you. Glade to note you had a safe journey home. I did watch long enough to see the mid-game result and was quite happy to spend more time posting the pics instead of remaining glued to the TV as the score remained the same at 2-nil in favour of Liverpool. :D

I think we must meet and adjourn again at hcyong's place for the World Championships from August 13-19 at Bukit Jalil. Mr Yong has not quite brought us around yet and it would give him another chance to play host and guide. ;)

Women's Doubles Semi-Final

The relatively new Indonesian partnership of Gresya Polii and Vita Marissa was in top form and defeated the popular Japanese pair of Kumiko Ogura and Reiko Shiota 20-22, 21-17, 21-13.

Wong Mew Choo put up a gallant fight but Zhu Lin of China proved too much of an obstacle. But for Mew Choo, all Malaysian fans were proud of her for her gutsy display as Malaysia did not have a woman player in the final for a very long time. Zhu won 21-15, 21-12.

Finals day was filled with excitement and high expectations. The atmosphere was electrifying and the noise decibel rose many notches higher than normal. But all the fans in KLBA stadium took everything in good stride.

Unlike the first round when Taufik was combating Lin Dan, there was hardly any noise from the Indonesian supporters. The lone cheerleader who was trying hard to attract attention with his monologue and waving the Indonesian flag took on the the Malaysian fans and Malaysia's well-known cheerleader and his cheer team. Inevitably he was drowned out by the incessant "Malaysian Wave", the sounds of vocals "Malaysia Boleh" and the banging of the kompangs and balloon clappers that reverberated around the gallery. He even tried to join force with an English supporter who was standing nearby and also excitedly waving the England flag to support Robertson and Emms in the XD against China's Zheng and Gao.

Everyone came to enjoy, to release their emotions, to make meet and make friends, to make noise and to put on a smile! Badminton is Entertainment after all! :) :D ;)

Men's Doubles Final

The organizers knew that Malaysian fans will not want to miss this titantic match, so they placed this event right behind as the last match of the evening. Had they put it in front, many would have left before the end. :p

Malaysians refused to accept that their young talented pair of KKK and TBH, though recently assembled in time for the Doha Asian Games, in which they won the MD crown, will be no match for the ex-Olympic champion Indonesian veteran pair of Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya. Therefore they came in droves and created an atmosphere of fun and excitement and the cheer teams produced the rather familiar home-made music with their vocal chords, the Malay kompang hand drum and the Yonex balloon bangers. Such noisy music can often soothen the ears of Malaysian players and drive them to greater heights.

KKK/TBH were merciless and gave a scintillating performance unmatched by their rivals. The 'music' sent their adrenalin through the roof and with boundless energy, they gave TG/CW no chance of any comeback. It was a relatively easy victory, 21-15, 21-18 in 34 minutes.

That only title win evoked a standing ovation from the passionate Malaysian fans who were so glad that they stayed behind and stood by their young heroes.

When kwun came to Singapore for the Aviva Open 2004, he got to know quite a number of BC members through the social games we arranged. Can you remember we put up the first BC banner (which his mother painstakingly ordered from Shenzhen?) brought along by kwun? But I don't know whether he remembered hcyong who was one of those present. They might have sparred together.

As for Terry in his impressive outfit, of course he is the best person to answer your question. But I think our good friend "ants" must have something to do with it. Apparently ants missed the LD v TH match as he had to catch an afternoon flight to Japan? As you know ants seems to know many badminton folks in high places (both officials and players alike), not only in Malaysia but also in the Philippines where he is currently residing. Maybe he is currently cultivating a relationship with the Japanese badminton fraternity? ;)

Wong Mew Choo beat Eriko hHrose 21-18, 21-19 (42 min)

The straight games score belied the hard work that both players had put in.
It could have gone Eriko's way but Mew Choo was rather persistent and went for every shot that Eriko was pressured to place. Mew Choo's doggedness paid off in the end and the frustrated Eriko was thoroughly dissappointed as she was able to defeat the up-and-coming Hong Kong star who beat Zhang Ning recently, Yip Pui Yin, in the QF, albeit in three games of 15-21, 21-12,21-10. You can't blame Eriko who was looking forward to booking perhaps her first final in a major for sometime now?

The remarkable story of Peter Gade who was hospitalized for a migraine-related problem even before he arrived in KL for his assault on the MO SS men's singles title. He was still unwell when the qualifiers fought from morning to night to gain admission into the main draw, as was reported.

But when he was up and about for his first match in R1, he showed that he had more or less recovered as he progressively destroyed all opposition along the way as his following victories indicated:

R1 - Eric Pang (Nederlands) 22-20, 21-11 (30m)
R2 - Ronald Susilo (Singapore) 21-13, 21-10 (28m)
QF - Chen Yu (China) 21-13, 21-13 (27m)
SF - Kenneth Jonassen (Denmark)21-14, 16-21, 21-11 (51m)
F - Bao Chunlai (China) 21-14, 17-21, 21-13 (55m)

It appears that Eric Pang gave PG an immediate test on his state of health when PG was stretched to deuce at 20-all for his first game during R1. But PG then gave a good account of himself when he finished Eric off with 21-11 in the next game.

In R2, Ronald never got quite settled when PG gave him only 13 and 10 points. Chen Yu became PG's next victim although Chen had triumphed over PG before.

Then PG's real test came when compatriot Kenneth Jonassen, who had been hyped up to win this MO, took the second game but surrendered in the final game despite being so familiar with PG's style of play.

It seemed that the rest in hospital did PG a lot of good for even a rest day given to his final opponent, Bao Chunlai, by countryman Chen Hong, who was reported to be injured but showed up to play in the ongoing Korea Open although he eventually lost to Hafiz Hashim in three games. Even the LYB strategy failed to stop the 'bull-run' by PG, who perhaps played one of his career best matches against BCL and gave badminton fans a lot to talk about.

Indeed, PG is still sharp and fast and his smash remains lethal. He seems to have a protective armour around him, making it very difficult for rivals to penetrate his defense. His game has matured! :D

Loh, thank you very much for sharing all the pics. I am glad that you and other buddies enjoyed the tournament with company from local badm fans. Hope to join you all next time if possible. :)

Why don't you try to make it for the WC in August? Come home and meet your BC friends! Hope you've finished your thesis/dissertation by then. ;)

feels like the pictures are shot through some peephole spy cam or something...

lol :P

one more comment, we need to see more of shiota!!!!

Hope you're happy with more Shiota pics that I've posted, or do you want some more? Yes the stadium was filled to the brim and the the excited spectators were moving their heads here and there for a better view. Inevitably they clashed with my picture-taking resulting in the "peephole" description you mentioned. :D

I would like to join you all in AUG but it is impossible due to my schedule. If any of you come to AE, we can meet over here then. :D

They are perhaps the fastest and currently the most talented pairs in their own countries. They met last December during the semi-finals of the Doha Asian Games and the new Malaysian partnership of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong prevailed easily over Indonesia's Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan 21-14, 21-13 in just 20 min.

At this MO men's doubles semi-final match too, KKK/TBH continued to dominate with another convincing 21-19, 21-16 win in 29 minutes, taking slightly longer than before.

Will this new Malaysian sensation, who went on to take the MO crown by beating the most experienced in the business, Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya, be able to last and become World No.1 this year? Time will tell. But one thing is for sure - they will continue to communicate with each other on the court. Just as their Indonesian coach Rexy has a way of communicating with them during the intervals by putting his arms around the two of them to give them the feeling that they are treasured! :)

Thanks my friend. Good that you like them. You should let me have the use of your supercam next time so that even though I sit far away from the actual happenings, right at the extremities, I could still take clear pics!

The lens i'm using is not a bazooka. Its just a 70-200 2.8 IS L. But i guess its good enough. However my equipment is nothing compare to storkbill's stuffs! Anyway i let u use it next time when we are together.

How about coming to the Singapore Open in first week of May? Then I can compare yours with Storkbill's, assuming he can 'steal' time to watch the matches. :D

Actually apart from the wide angle lens I also have a zoom Nikon AF Nikkor 75-240 mm which I use for shooting the badminton pics. But my SLR is too noisy at ISO 1600 and some camera shake is unavoidable even on a tripod.:(
