All four are around 20 - 22 years old. Talent wise... they are as talented as the top 10 players... but they are not there yet... Still need a lot to improve in terms of gamesmanship... :cool:

Maybe they will mature later like Luluk and Alven, who matured as good top players when they're 23 - 25... :)

Thank you thank you...:D In the coming months we will see the youngsters in action. Hopefully their career can take off... Talented Malaysians of their generation [KKK-TBH] have already made their mark. Lee Yong Dae of Korea is even younger. He impressed many people here in Indonesia. We respect his talent too. Anyway, the four Indonesian youngsters that we saw in the pictures have Olympic potential.

Yoga, Yoke will have to do better than being ranked in the 30s [like today]. Fran will partner with Sigit under the PB Djarum banner and will appear in the international scene again soon. Surely Sigit is a better player than Rendra, so we shall see their results. I don't know exactly what they will do with Rendra. The National Team have to pair him up with someone... According to their world ranking, yes. Yoga and Yoke are the number 5 MD pair from Indonesia. After Kido-Hendra, Luluk-Alven, Rian-Eng Hian, Joko-Hendra AG, then Yoga-Yoke. Well... number 6 if you include Tony-Chandra... =p Ha ha ha... If they are not careful, they might be number 7 once Sigit - Fran start gaining some world ranking points...

Rendra, Bona, and Septano are from PB Jaya Raya. Bona and Septano are 19-20... [I think]

Subakti - Fernando [18-19 years old], Tantowi - Lingga [20-21 years old], and Titon are all from PB Djarum. Titon is not in the National Team anymore. He is practicing with PB Djarum again.

But China? Beside Cai/Fu, the only youngster pair who has potential is Shen Ye/He Hanbin - currently ranked #23. Don't know if Zhang Wei is still playing with Xu Chen, but both players are not sent to that many tournaments. Now it seems that China wants a new partnership between Zheng Bo and Guo Zhendong, hope they will show good results at the upcoming European touranments - Austrian International etc.

Yeah it is true that China only have Cai-Fu right now [and even THEY are not performing so well in the past 3 months]... But I am sure Li Yongbo will think of something soon. I fully expect China to have at least 3 competitive MD this year... :)

Chandra, Hendra Setiawan, and Kido are all from PB Jaya Raya. That club is good at producing MD, but actually not very strong in MS today. Kido played singles when he was Remaja (under-16).

A typical PB Jaya Raya player would play both singles and doubles. Susi Susanti, Pia Zebaidah [Kido's sister], and even the most recent Beleatrix Manuputtu all were good singles and doubles player... So, Chandra, Hendra Setiawan, and Markis Kido all were "all-round" competitors when they were younger...

In 2001, during the West Java Circuit competition, Markis Kido was the Junior Mens' Singles Champion, while the Junior Mixed Doubles Champion was Hendra Setiawan - Gresya Polii [Gresya is now World Rank # 8 in WD].

In 2002, Markis Kido was paired by the National Team with Liliana Natsir [current XD world #1] and had some success nationally... while Hendra Setiawan was paired with Joko Riadi [current MD world #16].

In 2004, I first noticed Markis Kido - Hendra Setiawan in the world scene... They were practically Indonesia's 3rd best MD after Chandra-Sigit and Luluk-Alven... The first big win for Kido-Hendra was the 2005 Indonesian Open when they beat Chandra-Sigit.

As for Chandra Wijaya... well, in short: a national hero, a fantastic player, a very dedicated athelete, a mentally strong fearless competitor... Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist, 1997 World champion, 2003 All England Champion... Have won almost everything... Korea Open, Japan Open, Singapore Open, Indonesian Open by the time he retired from the national team... Awesome awesome...

Here is a widely known fact: Chandra is extremely disciplined in training, you cannot find any day when he didn't give everything or follow all rules. A not so widely known fact: Chandra critisized PBSI because they treat the undisciplined and uncontrollable Taufik Hidayat with no discipline! At the same time they often ask unreasonable unruly undisciplined things from Chandra who is already so disciplined... [I won't reveal the details today]

Chandra Kowi is not entirely wrong. When Fran was competing domestically with him, he used Frans. He could have used FransSsSsSs if he wanted to, since it is easy to change our name on the Indonesian identity card.

The 2007 WBSO Wilson Badminton Swiss Open finals have started. The first final of the day was the Mixed Doubles, between Greysia Polii/Muhammad Rijal, INA, and the 5/8 seed Koreans Lee Hyo Jung/Lee Dae Yong.
First game was dominated by Polii/Rijal playing fast back and forth and being srongest at the net. Although especially Lee Hyo Jung tried to put pressure on Polii throughout the game the Indonesian kept returning the shuttles and turning a defense into an attack. Polii/Rijal won the first game 21-14.
Second game saw Muhammad Rijal as a 'magician'! He performed shots not mentioned in any textbook and - on top opf that - had the luck to succeed with it.

Based on the club MD pairs' results overall in German Open/Swiss Open/All England, the decision to pair a new guy with a more experienced player is the correct one, and will hasten the transfer of experience.

PBSI pairs, on the other hand, were totally bested this time around. Time to go back to the roots and learn from the clubs?

Of course he wasn't happy. He just lost a close rubber sets.... :( Gee... that Lee Yong Dae is good... :cool:

I remember Rijal and Gresya first partnered with each other in 2002 when they both entered the national team. Before that, Rijal was with PB Djarum and Gresya was from PB Jaya Raya, so they didn't play together. In 2002 Gresya-Rijal went to the finals of the Junior World Championship. :)

But around 2003 or 2004, Rijal injured his thumb playing soccer at home... he thought he could not play badminton anymore... He was sidelined for almost one whole year while Gresya concentrated on WD... making herself the best WD Indonesia have right now... [probably the best talent in the past 5 years].

Later, Rijal recovered... and started playing XD again... mmm... with someone... I forgot. He wasn't too successful. Around this time, Rijal asked Gresya to reestablish their partnership. But at this time, Gresya only wanted to concentrate with WD.

Then around early 2006, Gresya changed her mind and wanted to play XD again. So, that's when they were reunited together... :) No doubt they will be Indo's XD spearhead in the next coming years... Note: Lili Natsir is still young [around 22-23] but Nova and Flandy are in their 30s... Vita is not young either.

Go Gresya go Rijal... :D

I agree with Krisna's comments on Greysia Polii.

She's simply the best WD (and XD) young talent we have right now. Greysia can partner almost anyone in WD and the pair usually rises up the ranks pretty quicky. Right now, Vita Marissa/Greysia Polii is ranked no 2 in the SS ranking, thanks to their consistent performance in the past 4 SS events :eek:

As for M. Rizal/Greysia Polii, they re-established their partnership in 2006 and Richard Mainaky showed his faith in them by sending them to higher ranked tourneys even from the beginning. They were trounced in earlier rounds quite oftenly...but...the recent Swiss Opens showed that they should be INA's no 1 XD pair just in a matter of time.

I do think that Nova Widianto should retire and Butet (Lilyana Natsir) should form a new partnership soon with a younger player, perhaps Alvent Yulianto? But, I am not sure if PBSI is daring enough to split the no 1 pair right now. They should just follow the example of China and Korea who recently break up the partnerships of Zhang Jun/Gao Ling and Lee Jae Jin/Lee Hyo Jung.

I did meet Frans during All England, but only twice - and both times in the same day..

This was the second and last time I met Frans during the entire tournament, I bet he was too lazy to go to hall and there wasn't anything interesting to watch when he and Sigit had lost to Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong as early as in the first round. Actually, Cai, Fu and I only smiled and said hi to them that day.. Faint.

And too many people in the restaurant at that time, so we ended up at a French restaurant instead.

When I first saw Gresya, she was playing a top Chinese pair during the Indonesian Open, so I thought... waaaah, how come the best Indonesian women doubles player is so short, slow and weak... Even the people next to me were commenting: uh-oh, how can we win against China when our doubles players [Gresya and Jo, at that time] were shorter than the net height. :p

Later on, I saw Gresya playing in the Indonesian National Championship... I immediately got a different impression. She is so mentally tough, spunky, energetic, powerful, fast, etc. compared to the other Indonesian WD players. :p Gresya is absolutely the best we have!

In the National Championship finals, Gresya Polii - Chandra Wijaya of PB. Jaya Raya beat Lili Natsir - Nova W. of PB. Tangkas in straight sets! Gresya's jump smashes were just awesome! :eek: :eek: :eek: Few Indonesian women were able to jump smash... Wonderful match to watch.... :cool: :cool:
