View Full Version : Koo Kien Kiet/Tan Boon Heong/Rexy Combination
jug8man 01-22-2007, 07:41 AM Lets discuss about this new pair in this thread. Please feel free to share pictures of them here as well.
Besides that, I think any duscussion about Rexy the 'maestro' doubles coach is also very much relevent to this thread. Without him would any of this be possible ????
Many people had reservations about Rexy's 'gamble' of pairing these 2 together and so soon with just the Asian Games around the corner....
Many would consider such a decision foolish or worse : Crazy!!!
But as they say... the only thing things that really separates Insanity from Brilliance / Genius is SUCCESS!!! To date, Rexy is producing this in SPADES!
Koo Kien Kiet & Tan Boon Heong. They don't look like they have much in common. From their build, to their different playing styles, and even their 'on screen personality'...... one would imagine that the two wouldn't even be friends, have same kind of friends or in speaking terms under normal circumstances!
However, this isn't any where near Normal Circumstances... besides the boiling pot of Malaysian Badminton Fans and Media, these two opposites have been drawn together and formed a bond & partnership not common. Not to forget the X Factor of having a character like Rexy as their Coach to Spice things up some more!!
How are they / this uncommon you may ask??? Besides these 2 being more than normally athlethically gifted of course... Well for Malaysian Doubles Badminton.. we have always been well regarded as a strong nation to be reckoned with... but when was the last time any Malaysian Pair won 2 Major Titles (AG2006 & MO2007) within a span of less than 3 months???? almost never or at least no where in the past 5-7 years for my recollection!!!
This itself could mean that KKK / TBH along with Coach Rexy have finally broken the Mould of what is Malaysian Badminton MD for the past decade or so???? It is very possible the curse of forever falling just short has been dispelled??
I certainly hope so!!!
So for now... only time will just have to tell if KKK / TBH under Rexy's guidiance will grow to be the stuff of Legends such as the best of TG/CW & Rexy/Ricky.
Cheers

zqloy 01-22-2007, 07:51 AM Both sharing the same name and birthday is not a coincidence, perhaps its the sign showing they're destine to be good partners. I see they hv the best potiential among the young pairs now. But how big they'll be depends on how "hungry" they r, hope Rexy will keep them on ground & guide them to become 1 of the greats.

No worries. If they continue perform consistently like the way they play in the finals, they r definitely hard to beat esp having KKK covering the front court. CY/FHF is a different case, their weakness is too obvious (their defense and flat drives is weak) and CY's front court skill is only average. Thats why he couldnt set up much for FHF if the opponent can beat him at the front court.

haifeng4ever 02-03-2007, 04:57 AM PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Korean's Jung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae have set the stage for an intense rivalry in the men's doubles badminton event going by the latest Super Series rankings.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Jae-sung-Yong-dae are the joint leaders in the men's doubles with 15,620 points accumulated after the first two legs of the Super Series in Malaysia and South Korea.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong won the opening leg in Malaysia two weeks ago while the Koreans nailed their home title last Sunday.
The Koreans conceded a walkover in the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open following Yong-dae's ankle injury while Kien Keat-Boon Heong ran out of steam, losing to Lee Jae-jin-Hwang Ji-man in the Korean Open semi-finals.
National doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky said it was good to have the Koreans for company, as it would keep the Malaysians on their toes.
“I am happy that Kien Keat-Boon Heong did not win in Korean. It would have gone to their head – especially Boon Heong. The defeat to another Korean pair showed that they are still not good enough,” said Rexy.
“I am happy that they are ranked at the top in the Super Series ranking list. But there is still a lot more to be achieved.”
In the men and women singles events, Malaysia have one representative in the top five.
National number one Lee Chong Wei, who reached the quarter-finals in both legs, is currently joint fourth with Chen Yu with 10,080 points.

jug8man 03-11-2007, 07:15 PM Koo/Tan simply amazing. 5 Tournaments. 3 Titles. 4 Finals. 1 Semi.
A lot of credit also goes to Rexy. He trully makes his presence felt in the match. He was always their to show his support and keep both players (especially Koo :D) in check and in composure.
Cai/Fu must have felt like it was the 2 of them vs 3 on court (Koo/Tan & Rexy :D) !!!!!
Malaysia Can! Malaysia Did!
Rexy Juga BOLEH!!!
Cheers,

alfa2 03-11-2007, 11:22 PM This thread's title should KKK/TBH & Rexy's combination. Imagine all straight games til they won it in AE..... In KO they were knocked down by the Koreans when Rexy is not there to guide them.
alfa2 03-11-2007, 11:32 PM KKK/TBH is going to be bigger than any players from MAS in these past few decades......

kian chuan 03-13-2007, 04:38 AM Stil remember the time KKK play thomas with chan chong meng. They beat indonesia. That time he already show something special. He has the style of a winner. Then comes Tan Boon Heong, He said he dint affraid of anybody, he has the courage to say that means he has the winner style too. KKK become more mature now and together with Tan's Winner's power of will. i think eh....this is new era of badminton. They are the most up look player after the era of indonesia, korea and Dannemark.

Trang 03-16-2007, 09:05 AM Well, after my opinion of course Rexy is an important part of this development that KKK/TBH have gone through - but it's not only Rexy. It's also up to the players whether they want to become one of the worlds best couples or not.
After my opinion they look like a couple that play very smart and they have a massive energi on court. Event though that TBH is a calm player he can express the energy on court, when a rally is done. And KKK .. talking about energy. :D whoo .. he' got a lot of it. :D
JaCk™ 03-16-2007, 09:05 AM Which country does Rexy come from? (:
from indonesia. the famous Rexy-Ricky combination.. never heard if them before? their golden era was 1995 to 1997 when they are almost unbeatable..
Trang 03-16-2007, 04:11 PM No, I've never heard of the combination. :) Why doesn't he coach the indonesian doubles ?
jamesd20 03-16-2007, 04:16 PM No, I've never heard of the combination. :) Why doesn't he coach the indonesian doubles ?
He will one day IMO.
He is a big personality though, maybe PBSI can't hadle that.
Man you should watch some old matches, you haven't lived until you have seen Ricky/Rexy play.

Qidong 03-16-2007, 07:48 PM who they goona fight tonight??..Hope they not too tired...Rexy seem done a good job credit also should be given to him:D :D
They will play Tony Gunawan and Chandra, another tough match. After that, the final should be just a piece of cake.
alfa-2 03-16-2007, 08:54 PM He will one day IMO.
He is a big personality though, maybe PBSI can't hadle that.
Man you should watch some old matches, you haven't lived until you have seen Ricky/Rexy play.
yeah totally definitely completely agreed......:p:p:p
alfa-2 03-16-2007, 08:57 PM Hope Rexy is always behind them saying, "Come on, come on, fight!". i heard it during the AE finals.. he is a very passionate coach who gives his best to players.
how could a malaysian not to love this affectionate coach.......:p:p:p:p
alfa-2 03-16-2007, 09:04 PM i hope they can b a world no 1 player sooner or later...perhaps dis year....if they win almost every tornaments...in super series...jia you!!
sad that they lost in KO while Rexy's not there....if not they might set a new record of winning every tournament they join in 2007, all the SS tournaments.....:p:p:p:p wishful thinking that im having......
alfa-2 03-16-2007, 09:08 PM Rexy said he is happy in Malaysia and is happy with players commitment.. His wife and children are comfortable in Malaysia too.. Hope he stays and continue guiding other young doubles pair
thats a very nice thing to hear.....as it will comfort thousands of MAS supporters' hearts as well as MAS KKK/TBH and other MAS MD.....;)
JaCk™ 03-17-2007, 04:23 AM Tonight will be a repeat of Malaysia Open final.. KKK/TBH vs CW/TG.. good luck to KKK/TBH
maIRa 03-17-2007, 12:57 PM muahaha..they won!
cooler 03-17-2007, 02:12 PM some might think kkk/tbn dull out on the 2nd set, i disagree. To beat an experienced and talented old pair like tg/cw, draining off their energy is the surest and safest way to win, and rexy game plan worked perfectly. This was an text book example case. However, this tactic only work if u have confidence to win the 3rd and it seem this young MAL pair, together with rexy's experience, is a hard combo to beat.
The indos have no stamina. Its proves that KKK/TBH win against them is not a fluke.
sickgal 03-17-2007, 04:21 PM mmm...not too sure yet since the MD is still taking place between the DANES n INA pair
haifeng4ever 03-17-2007, 06:17 PM mmm...not too sure yet since the MD is still taking place between the DANES n INA pair
Well, they will take on the danes.;)
ixory 03-17-2007, 10:05 PM Good luck for KKK/TBH and also rexy they really makes malaysian proud.Do hope they win this swiss open, so they got 2 title in just 2 weeks fuyooooo.....
sickgal 03-18-2007, 02:36 AM Well, they will take on the danes.;)
hopefully they'll bring the title back to Msia!! jia you jia you!!! :D:D:D
JaCk™ 03-18-2007, 03:52 AM LCW won the Swiss Open title last year and KKK won it partnering CCM. Hope KKK/TBH can win it tonight and make it double after their AE success
alfa-2 03-18-2007, 01:20 PM when will they be ranked no.1??? by mid of 2007??? and any ideas on who can beat KKK/TBH + Rexy now or in near future .......
sickgal 03-18-2007, 01:32 PM and truly the 3 of them makes a great team!!! kkk/tbh won the title of SO2007 as well as AE ....
Trang 03-18-2007, 01:35 PM Now they look unbeatable. I can't predict when they will become #1 or if they will become #1. But right now they're in the shape of their life.
schuweiz 03-18-2007, 02:26 PM I am happy that they are doing well at least for now. One thing that makes a good sportman, that's consistency. I really hope that it's not just "hangat hangat tahi ayam" :D, but I seriously hope that they keep their spirit and motivation like they plan in AE and the Swiss Open. AS for asking them whether they will become #1? I would act like LiMao and ask you that since when that you're this cruel to ask this question.... As a young group, i hope that arrogance does not carry them away.... One thing, thanks Rexy for whatever job that he has done to shape this boys...:D
ixory 03-18-2007, 07:09 PM Yeah, they done it again..Congratulation..:D :p Does anyone know when they going back to KL??:p :D .Can't wait to see no hair in KKK head.:D :p
ronnie14 03-18-2007, 07:40 PM skyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :p we love them :)
alfa-2 03-18-2007, 08:22 PM anyone knows how to calculate the ranking points?? assuming that they will comtinue to win consecutively every single tournament they enter......when they will surpass world number 1??? mind showing me how to do it?
amaze 03-18-2007, 08:39 PM Much as we would like it, personally I think we should not be placing undue pressure on these guys yet.
I'd prefer to see them in the badminton circuit for another 10 years minimum creating good results again and again and not be super explosive and then.... no more.
The character moulding is very important in this respect. If they can handle this fame properly, they'll be good for years to come and will become legends in their own right.
These few wins over the past months have also demonstated that it's easy to become Champions, if you find the right formula, and in a short span of time. But whether you can become Champions over and over again, and dominate the circuit, is another matter yet again.
So I hope the general Malaysian public will give these boys breathing space and support them whatever their results in the next few years.... and don't forget Lee Chong Wei too. Remember Nicol David took 3 months off and came back with a storm ? Hope he can do the same.
bzhang1108 03-18-2007, 08:45 PM wachted quite a few matches of this pair in 06 Asian games, 07 All England and 07 Swiss Open. I would say they really look unbeatable at this moment. Have not seen such a dominating MD pair in the circuit for some time. Congratulations to Malaysian fans for having such a great MD pair after so much waiting.
Regarding who can beat them in future, I think Korean Men's double has the best chance. (Lee/Huang already beat them twice so far) I also hope that Cai/Fu can do so, but Cai/Fu has to improve their games first. (reduce unfored errors, improve their flat drive shots). I would say if Cai/Fu can match KKK/TBH in drive shots, they would be at least even with KKK/TBH, if not better. Drive shots, that is the weat point of all chinese MD pairs. Chinese coach really need to do something about it.
MdFauzan 03-18-2007, 08:46 PM ...One thing that makes a good sportman, that's consistency... :D
Totally agree with u bro. This new pair has proven their winning streak is not just a fluke. They've shown a good sportsmanship and consistency up till now.
Hope this good attitude can inspire other MSIA teams to push further.:)
azabaz_ipoh 03-18-2007, 09:00 PM me too, wish for enduring domination i mean. not just a hot flash in the pan. they look like they can make it. be a legend. and i hope they will be humble about it because what is better than a legend is a humble legend that people will remember not just for their prowess in the fighting ring but also their personality and demeanor. i am 100% behind them. and LCW too. may he make the greatest comeback.
alfa-2 03-18-2007, 09:46 PM consistency is the main issue here for KKK/TBH i guess......if they can maintain that, it's almost impossible for other players to be able to beat them anytime soon. hope that other MAS MD players can buck up......dun wan another LCW incident to happen on our superheroes.......
alfa-2 03-18-2007, 09:51 PM agreed on the matter that other pairs could improve themselves and thus pose a threat to this great pair..... but dun expect the talented KKK/TBH to stay halt at the the level they of their play now.
alfa-2 03-18-2007, 09:53 PM improving their defensive play and the power of their smashes will be their next step and certainly would make them a perfect pair then.....
JaCk™ 03-18-2007, 11:44 PM KKK/TBH still needs to improve. Other players have not analysed their game well. If their opponents can handle the flat drive and net tap by KKK/TBH, they have a 50-50 chance of winning. When other players improve, KKK/TBH must improve too.
JaCk™ 03-18-2007, 11:49 PM Rexy should be called as Sky too. Sky Koo, Sky Tan and Sky Rexy. These three Skies will dominate this badminton world.
alfa-2 03-19-2007, 12:49 AM kind of funny coz the name Sky reminds me of a HK movie starred by Ekin Cheng.......about street racing.
abedeng 03-19-2007, 02:21 AM Koreans are best bets to beat KKK/TBH. Partly due to Tan Kim Her factor as chief coach of Korean doubles, and partly due to MAS incompatibility with Korean style of play since Razif/Jalani Sidek first squared off with Park Joo-bong/Lee Eun Ku.
Anyway, they proved it with Lee/Hwang's 2 wins over KKK/TBH. But surprisingly, CHN and INA pairs don't have problems beating Koreans, even non-PBSI pairs.
Just as this new pair has surprised the badminton world in such a short time, we must expect that surprises are in store every now and then.
Just as we do not find China's domination appealing, we should welcome surprises to make the badminton scene livelier and more interesting! :)
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 03:28 AM kind of funny coz the name Sky reminds me of a HK movie starred by Ekin Cheng.......about street racing.
oh, don't associate KKK/TBH/Rexy with street racing.. I believe they do not do that. Busy practising..
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 03:31 AM The Korean smashes are very powerful too. they adapt punishment training right? very disciplined. we need rexy to continue building the correct attitude among malaysia players.
ixory 03-19-2007, 04:21 AM I'm just curious here, why when KKK partnering CCM,KKK never achieved this kind of success but while partnering TBH suddenly he changed. Are this because of KKK is good or because TBH is good??.If we said it because of Rexy,he also already coached KKK/CCM before TBH takes CCM place. Not look down on anybody here but since KKK partnering TBH.He seem more mature on his games.
Jessica 03-19-2007, 04:27 AM I think they will continue improving under rexy as rexy said that they have a lot to do after this.Well, now the whole Malaysian are putting hope on them and started demand more from them.I hope this won't cause a burden to them as i don't wish to see they not playing well because of the stress or burden but not thier skills.Give them some time to rest and sharpen their skills, i believe that they can continue with good results.
Jessica 03-19-2007, 04:31 AM Well, this is maybe because of the chemistry effect between the players.Maybe TBH suit KKK more than CCM and this doesn't means that CCM is not good.Actually CCM playing style suit the 15 scoring point but KKK/TBH are specially design for the 21 point scoring system.I do no but i think this may be the factor.Well,i hope CCM can do well too.
Dreamzz 03-19-2007, 04:32 AM looking at the current ranking tables, after the AE, KKK/TBH have about 31k points, add to that 9k for the win in the swiss open, puts just slightly over 40k points. this should be a world position of around 9 considering that all of the pairs from from 9-12 already have 10 tournaments credited to them.
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 06:20 AM Hope they can break into Top 5 soon. Join CTF/LWW in top 5 la. Men singles ranking dominated by China.
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 06:22 AM agree, KKK/TBH suit to partner each other. Their playing style suit each other. That is why when TBH partner KKK, their partnership explodes well. Good start for them. CCM/HTH work hard too!
LazyBuddy 03-19-2007, 06:42 AM Not to take credits away from the pair. Myself recently became a fan for Koo as well, with his sharp net plays. However, I have to say the recent success more or less due to this pair does come into the "right time". The older pairs in Danes and TG/CW shows signs of slowing down (hey, they are 30+), and no other new pairs from the power house emerging into a power yet (Lee/Lee and Cai/Fu, etc).
Keep up the good work. Btw, I love TBH's backhand attack. :p
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 07:43 AM you are right. TBH always trick his opponent with his backhand.
ck1981 03-19-2007, 07:54 AM Our other Msia double pairs must improve too. I believe they also can achieve the same results under Rexy guidance.
bic33 03-19-2007, 08:52 AM KKK/TBH will lose because KKK didn't keep his promise of going bald..lol
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 09:04 AM KKK/TBH will lose because KKK didn't keep his promise of going bald..lol
confirm KKK not going bald??
bic33 03-19-2007, 09:07 AM he said that if he wins AE, he'll go bald... maybe he doesn't have a round head so he's ashamed to go bald... on another side, i think LYB is baldy because he wears his cap all the time.. i think i saw a picture of him attending XXZ's wedding with his cap..:D :D :)
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 09:13 AM he said that if he wins AE, he'll go bald... maybe he doesn't have a round head so he's ashamed to go bald... on another side, i think LYB is baldy because he wears his cap all the time.. i think i saw a picture of him attending XXZ's wedding with his cap..:D :D :)
LYB always wear his cap. KKK cannot wear cap when playing. Let's see he will go bald or not.
carine 03-19-2007, 09:38 AM who is LYB?can show pic?
modious 03-19-2007, 09:48 AM KKK/TBH will lose because KKK didn't keep his promise of going bald..lol
Maybe he is superstitious. Why change something when everything is going so well for them? It's his lucky hair!
who is LYB?can show pic?
LYB = Li Yongbo.
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 10:37 AM Li Yong Bo is the dictator of China team. How can you not know about him?
jamesd20 03-19-2007, 11:59 AM Li Yong Bo is the dictator of China team. How can you not know about him?
He is the team manager/Head coach. And has been very successful in it too. He is protective of his players when needed as well as crictical.
JaCk™ 03-19-2007, 12:18 PM ya, LYB is very tactical in match fixing too? haha. at least Rexy wants all his players to give their best, and not match fixing.
jamesd20 03-19-2007, 04:27 PM ya, LYB is very tactical in match fixing too? haha. at least Rexy wants all his players to give their best, and not match fixing.
Rexy does not have the choice of Match fixing. No one else in badminton has the power over tournaments as LYB does, so he cannot be compared with this aspect of the game to others.
If Rexy creates the domination for MAS badminton in 10 years time, then you can judge himn on how he uses this. I would imagine he would do just the same. (I don't beleive he will be abe to create this though)
He (LYB) should be praised for creating this domination, not criticised for his alleged misuse of it. Remember it is his job to win titles... and he does.
KKK will go bald.. will do it when he comes back to msia.
*weiwei* 03-19-2007, 10:39 PM y blad? if he win the all england, then he blad? i dun really understand. is becoz he love blad? or he think he cant win the match? hehehe... anyway... if i have not mistaken, both of them will reach klia at 11pm tonite... info from china press... hhehehe...
valen 03-19-2007, 11:02 PM Let’s not kill the golden goose!
20 Mar 2007
Review by K.M. Boopathy (news@nst.com.my)
KOO Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, after their Swiss Open win in Basel on Sunday, have firmly established themselves as the most lethal doubles pair on the planet.
And it’s high time too as Malaysia has been starved of world success in badminton for way too long.
However, they could easily self-destruct from overzealous celebrations and the rewards that some are clamouring for following their back-to-back victories in the All England and Swiss Open. This is something the young Kien Keat-Boon Heong must be very guarded against on their return home tonight.
A grand welcome at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is said to be in place and, as usual, there will be those wanting to jump on the bandwagon and organise more functions to associate themselves with the champions.
Kien Keat, 22, and Boon Heong, 20, thoroughly deserve all the credit as winning four titles in six tournaments is no easy task by any stretch of the imagination, but they must not let it get to their heads. Getting conceited is a sure way of losing a grip on reality.
This, they must not do. Of late, badminton fans have witnessed the gradual slipping away of Hafiz Hashim and, more recently, Lee Chong Wei. This must not happen to Kien Keat-Boon Heong.
Hafiz, following his 2003 All England triumph, became an overnight hero at home and on his return from Birmingham, was greeted by many VIPs, while Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz greeted him when he returned to his home town of Kota Baru.
Hafiz received monetary rewards, and also a brand new car.
All that adulation and rewards, it is suspected, took Hafiz to dizzy heights from which he did not quite recover. And now, just 25, the age when some champions are just peaking and others maintaining their grip on things, Hafiz has been struggling to get anywhere close to his 2003 form. Chong Wei also showed rapid progress last year and became the World No 1 for a month and the attention he got not only saw him lose his focus completely but his normal resilience also took a blow.
Now, in Kien Keat-Boon Heong, Malaysia have an outstanding pair capable of winning much more but gold in the Beijing Olympics must take precedence above all else. National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky, who discovered and nurtured the pair, is very cautious about the duo’s new-found fame which he believes could destroy them if Kien Keat-Boon Heong are not handled properly.
"The celebrations are going to be grand but I will do my best to protect them. We need to make an effort to reduce the celebrations and start preparing for other competitions fast," said Rexy in a telephone interview from Basel.
"I must also make sure they remain level-headed which means I need to educate them on how to handle the fame. So far, I have no complaints but their efforts should continue."
Reward for winning the All England and Swiss Open titles, which have fetched Kien Keat-Boon Heong a total of US$28,400 (RM99,400), should not be the issue.
The BA of Malaysia (BAM) already has its incentive scheme where Kien Keat-Boon Heong will receive an additional 25 per cent of their prize money and the presidential bonus of RM10,000 for each title.
This will fetch them an impressive (about) RM240,000 in total for their efforts from the four super series tournaments — Malaysia, Korea and Swiss Opens and the All England — they competed in this year. Showering them with more rewards is not a good idea.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong have just started their career and if they go on playing the way they have been doing, they will have the world at their feet and more rewards will follow.
But for now, Rexy must not let the sweet smell of success get to the heads of two players who are yet so young.

After the SO, KKK/TBH will have 40836 pts at the next update. There will be only one tournament in April (I think they confirmed that they will participate) the Yonex Sunrise Asian Continental Cham 2007 in JB. This is a GP Gold series worth 7000 pts for champions. In May, there will be Aviva Singapore Open and Djarum Indonesia Open - both are SS. Champions are worth 9200 pts. If they win all 3, they will have a cumulative total of 66,236. It might be close to getting them to no. 1. That will depend on Fu/Cai not reaching any q/f in any of the 3 series and WC/TG not amassing more than 23,800 point till then, and etc for the higher ranking pairs. In June there is the Sudirman Cup. There will be 12000 pts at stake for the champion. It might just put the bar a little further for the pair to reach the no.1 ranking since this is a mixed team event.
Then comes July. There will be a Thailand Open and Philippines Open. These are both GP Gold worth 7000 each for Champions. Otherwise it will take them to after the WC in August.
Hope this helps
valen 03-20-2007, 06:25 PM Those who went to KLIA, can someone open another thread for pictures taken at the airport?
By the way, Kien Keat's surname Koo (and Louis Koo's) is it the same as the normal "Khoo"? In chinese, is it written the same way?
chin yin 03-20-2007, 07:28 PM Valen,
Louis Koo's surname is '古', meaning 'ancient'. Koo Kien Keat's surname is '古', too. Louis Koo Tin Lok = 古天乐; Koo Kien Keat = 古健杰. Normal Khoo is '邱'. Have you heard of the Khoo Kongsi in Penang? That is the ancestral temple for the Khoo Clan in Penang. '邱' has the same meanings as '丘'. One of its meaning is 'hill'. However, the word '邱' mostly (99%) appears as a Chinese surname.
In conclusion, Kien Keat's surname is not written in the same way as the normal Khoo.

The attention has always been on their strokes and smashes, but little else is known of doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong off the courts.
http://thestar.com.my/youth2/archives/youth2/2007/3/21/youth2/y_03koo.jpg
KOO KIEN KEAT
Age: 21
Hometown: Ipoh, Perak
Birthdate: Sept 18, 1985
Academic: St Michael’s Institution in Ipoh; Bukit Jalil Sports School
Coach: Rexy Mainaky
KOO Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong are adept at talking about their exploits on court; they can weigh their chances of winning, analyse the matches, and are always appropriately modest about beating more experienced and established world-class players.
Their rise has been meteoric; winning four out of the six tournaments they have participated in the past four months. They capped their heady streak of wins by capturing two major titles back-to-back in the last fortnight, bringing back the prestigious All-England doubles crown after a 25-year hiatus, and the Swiss Open title on Sunday.
Kien Keat and Boon Heong have been called hotshots, and hailed as the players of the new badminton era.
All that exhilaration, however, had not quite hit the duo on Monday, as they got ready to make their long journey home from Basel, Switzerland. They were exhausted, and looking forward to returning home.
They were both initially a tad reluctant to talk about their lives off the badminton court. “Why would people want to know about us?” they asked, but graciously obliged after a few SMS exchanges.
“I ‘suffered’ for two weeks in Europe without Malaysian food. I want to eat lots of things, like curry mee in Ipoh Garden and chao fan, (fried koay teow),” said the 21-yearold Kien Keat who was the chattier one. He was witty and quick to rebut, and refreshingly unguarded.
He rattled on light-heartedly, and then asked not to be quoted with a big laugh.
Boon Heong took longer to warm up, especially since he was in transit midway through a tedious 32-hour Basel-London- Dubai-Kuala Lumpur flight home. But he too quickly eased up, and even shared his Friendster ID.
“I want to go home and see my grandfather,” said 19-year-old Boon Heong, who is very close to his family in Alor Star, Kedah.

TAN BOON HEONG
Age: 19
Hometown: Alor Star, Kedah
Birthdate: Sept 18, 1987
Academic: SMK La Salle
Petaling Jaya; Bukit Jalil Sports School
Coach: Rexy Mainaky
Boon Heong was named Sportsboy of the Year in 2005
They are already recognised on the streets, and have their own league of fans. Kien Keat and Boon Heong are however somewhat uncomfortable with the attention, especially when people stare at them.
“It’s not good. Now I cannot do cheeky things anymore,” Kien Keat joked.
Boon Heong also has to rein in his ‘naughtiness’, but not too much.
“I was never studious, and was very naughty when I was younger. I’m still naughty now, but things are different,” he said.
Boon Heong’s father, Tan Yoon Meng, said that his youngest son was a mischievous boy, but he was always serious about badminton especially when he started winning competitions.
“When he was 11 or 12, he told us that one day we’d watch him play badminton on television. Of course, we laughed at him then,” said Tan.
The boys started attending sports school in Bukit Jalil in their teens, but the road to becoming a badminton superstar was a tough one. The training was rigorous, and they led regimented and disciplined lives.
“When they were in the junior team, Kien Keat told me all lights must be turned off by 10pm. Even now, he will not go for dinner with us during the weekdays, as he’d be too tired from the training.
But the discipline is good for him,” said Kien Keat’s mother, Tan Pow Chean who waits for her son’s call after every match.
Her youngest son looked nothing like the lanky lad with dyed stylish hair and ear stud when he was a child, said Tan.
“I was very short and wore spectacles, all my friends will tell you that. I never imagined that I would be so tall.
“Actually I never thought of dyeing my hair. I went for a haircut and my hairstylist suggested that I do it so I said ‘Okay lah’,” recalled Kien Keat, who was just as nonchalant about shaving his head bald to fulfil the vow he made before winning the All- England.
Despite his flamboyant appearance, Tan said her son is more of an introvert at home.
http://thestar.com.my/youth2/archives/youth2/2007/3/21/youth2/y_02trophy.jpg Tan Boon Heong (left) and Koo Kien Keat’s All-England win has breathed hope and excitement for badminton in Malaysia.
“He is more outgoing now after he joined the badminton squad. He has even picked up other Chinese dialects like Hokkien. We find out things about him from the newspaper,” she said, and laughed when asked if her son is dating anyone. “You ask him,” was her reply.
Kien Keat was just as reticent with us, “Why do you need to know? Sensitive lah,” he said.
As for Boon Heong, he said: “If I tell you, everyone will read this right? I have friends but no girlfriend.”
Although their partnership has been such a hit, the duo said they are not inseparable off the courts.
“We are not best friends, but on the court, we are. Without him, there’ll be no me. So we talk a lot on the court but we live our own lives,” said Kien Keat who shares the same birthday as Boon Heong on Sept 18.
In many ways, they are like their peers. During the weekends, they like to hang out with friends. But they are not movie buffs.
“I fall asleep at the movies. I can stay awake through action films or comedies, though,” said Kien Keat.
For now, it is badminton that takes precedence in their lives, and both are determined to remain focused and grounded. Boon Heong attributed their successful pairing to “all-rounder playing and great cooperation”.
“Maybe because we are young, or perhaps we have sat hei (aura of doom),” joked Kien Kiat, who was also quick to add that they are “not superstars.”
Boon Heong, the youngest member of the national badminton squad, said he expects his coaches, teammates, family and friends to knock some sense into him if he ever grows arrogant. He is also determined to not let pressure get to him. They have seen how hard their seniors work to do well, and know the responsibilities they shoulder.
For now, they are determined to win the Asian Badminton Championships and the World Championships.
It is too early for them to contemplate their lives beyond their badminton careers, but Kien Keat said he’d like to continue his studies. “If, just if, I can plan around the tight schedules, I want to take up part-time studies. I don’t know what I want to study, whatever’s easy to get a certificate, I guess,” said Kien Keat, roaring with laughter.

ixory 03-21-2007, 05:35 PM In demand Rexy vows to stick with BAM
By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: Indonesian Rexy Mainaky has received several lucrative offers to coach elsewhere but his heart is with the Malaysian team.
Rexy, whose two-year contract as doubles chief coach ends in June, has given the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh an assurance that he will be with the national team at least until after the Beijing Olympics next year.
“I am wanted back in Indonesia and England. In fact, even India and Russia have approached me during the two tournaments in Europe (the recent All-Englland and Swiss Open). But I have an obligation with the Malaysian team and I have to fulfil it,” said Rexy.
“There is hope to see a world champion and an Olympic champion. There are expectations from my players and I plan to stay here with them to help them meet those expectations. In fact, I feel so at home here.”
Rexy returned home with the team late on Tuesday night from a highly successful outing in the two tournaments in Europe. His charges, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, won both the titles and they were given a hero's welcome at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Kien Keat-Boon Heong won the prestigious All-England title for Malaysia for the first time in 25 years in Birmingham and followed up with another great success in the Swiss Open in Basel.
The two titles took their tally to four since they forged a partnership last October. They won the Asian Games gold medal in Doha last December and the Malaysian Open title the following month. The two titles that got away in just six tournaments together were the Japan Open (runners-up) and Korean Open (semi-finalists). Rexy is the only foreign coach remaining in the national senior side. Last month, Chinese coach Li Mao, who handled the singles players, quit the team after getting a better deal from the Korean BA.
I hope rexy stay in Malaysia.I dun wanna see him go.There is lot to do here until beijing 2008 and BAM dun let him go if u do, i won't let u go.wakaka...

cuz they are both LA SALLIANS!!!! haha:D
How will KKK look like without his hair?
He looks really 'adorable' if he keeps his hair as long as what is shown in this pic which was taken a year ago during the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. I'm sure his XD partner and her WD partner would agree!
I was impressed with his talent then and it did not surprise me that he turned out to be the AE champion, albeit with a new and younger partner. Hope you like this pic. :D .

How does Wong Tat Meng feel now? Not successful as a player and now, not succesful as coach as well?
I think this is unfair on the new singles coach as he barely started work. You must give him reasonable time to mould his players before passing judgement.
I don't know too much about his playing career but to have gained a place in the National Team proves he is successful as a player in his own right. How many can be National players?
Remember Li Mao is not the top Chinese player during his time. It was reported that he even lost to Misbun Sidek but Li has now earned a name in coaching.
alfa-2 03-22-2007, 11:14 PM The success of every coach will depend on how good is his ability to analyse the games of his own player and opponents. And how well he can make sure of their players will carry out his plan to beat the opponents.

from what i read, LCW said certain players took Wong Tat Meng for granted. since he took over the job, some players took this opportunity to be late for training. Wong Tat Meng should tighten the players' discipline first. Discipline is key to success.

Analyse all you want, plan all you want...it's all about winning that counts, win the big prestigious tourneys, like AG, OG, WC, CG, would get job security, bonus and recognition...no win, no contract extension and coach is gone, kaput! LOL! :p :p :p

And in case you guys (non Malaysians esp) are wondering what's that thing they're wearing on their head. It's called a 'Songkok'. You normally wear it for formal occasions like this (and it's not everyday you're meeting the King.. heh!).
And FYI, this is also our King, who almost took part in the Asian Games in one of the Equestrian events (Endurance race) but have to withdraw because he has to be in Malaysia for another important equestrian event.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (http://www.bam.org.my/) (BAM) have poured cold water on parties to fete Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, who have gained celebrity and national heroes’ status in just a short period as a pair.
National chief coach Yap Kim Hock said yesterday that the duo would resume training at the Gymnasium II in Bukit Jalil today and no more appointments could be made with them.
“There were appointments made last week to fete the players. There will be one or two more functions for them this week,” he said.
“That is enough. The BAM have decided not to entertain requests made this week for them. The celebrations must end. It is time for them to get back into shape again for upcoming tournaments.”
Kim Hock added that doubles coach Rexy Mainaky would decide on the duo’s participation in the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) scheduled for April 10-15 in Johor Baru based on their condition in training.
“They have reached the world number 10 spot and have secured their place in the World Championships (Aug 13-19 in Bukit Jalil). They can afford to skip the ABC and get ready for the Singapore and Indonesian Opens. Rexy will make a decision on this,” he said.
The ABC is the last tournament before the qualifiers for the world meet are finalised based on the May 3 world rankings.
However, seedings for the world championships will be based on the Aug 2 world rankings and the duo have a chance to get among the top eight with good results in the Singapore Open (May 1-6) and Indonesian Open (May 7-13).
Since forging a partnership last October for the Japan Open and finishing as the runners-up, Kien Keat-Boon Heong have gone on to win four titles in the next five tournaments.
They won the first Asian Games gold medal for Malaysia in 36 years in Doha last December and followed it up with victory in the first round of the inaugural Super Series, the Malaysian Open in January. They returned home as champions from the prestigious All-England in Birmingham and the Swiss Open in Basel recently.
Their success in the All-England was the first for Malaysia in men’s doubles after 25 years.
angelatby 03-26-2007, 07:52 PM They are as famous as Celebrities now, our gap are also wider. Almost everyday is about them in newspaper

They become the lamelight nowadays, they should be used it and continue to strive a higher GOAL. Stand at the ground is very important, don't fly too high until they lose themselves. I'm sure the fans don' want to see them like that.Hope their partnership will be sucessful and last a long time. Well done to Rexy TOOOO definitely for making such a wonderful pair.
~sss~ 03-29-2007, 03:56 AM Check out his blog.he told why he absent

JaCk™ 03-29-2007, 07:01 AM So far, Tan Boon Heong shows he can handle it. But, somehow i feel, they are different now. Compared to Asian Games, at that time, they are not so confident and they carry themselves humbly. Now, they are like treated like superstars. Should blame the media for too much publicity and interview. Erm, anyway, just thank them for making us proud. Still, I'm uncomfortable.
alfa-2 03-29-2007, 07:18 AM what can you do??? when u win something that prestigious, media will take advantage of it....remember 92 thomas cup after MAS won it??? ill pray that the history doesnt repeat itself.....
mirrura 03-29-2007, 08:30 AM From R.A.G.E (http://www.rage.com.my/writeups/story.asp?file=/2007/3/29/mustread/20070329092158&sec=mustread)
KOO Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong walked into Menara Star, Petaling Jaya, nonchalantly, arriving at the same time but in separate cars. The former was dressed casually in a T-shirt and cropped-cargo pants, while Boon Heong was clad in black - shirt, pants and leather shoes.
The two had spent the morning with Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The King requested for an audience with the duo to present them with a trophy congratulating them on their recent All-England win, the nation's first in 25 years, as well as their subsequent win at the Swiss Open.
You wouldn't have expected them to look any different - they are, after all, regular youngsters on the verge of adulthood (Kien Keat is 21, and Boon Heong is 19). What did stand out, however, was the Louis Vuitton messenger bags across their respective bodies.
"We bought it in Switzerland the other day. It's RM1,000 cheaper than in Malaysia," said Boon Heong, who carried a brown one while Kien Kiat had a light grey and cream version.
Like your average teenagers, the two national badminton players were chatty, cracking the occasional joke. It was only when they were about to be mic-ed up for the video interview that they looked slightly uncomfortable.
"We hardly do interviews such as this," Kien Keat explained.
The Ipoh native is quite obviously the more flamboyant of the two. His trademark golden hair is now short, to fulfill a vow he made prior to winning the All-England championship.
"I miss having longer hair. I'm still not used to this (hairstyle) but I will (eventually)," he shared. Of course, he looked nothing like the trendy person he is now, Gucci shoes and all. His childhood pictures showed a gawkier Kien Keat - short with thick spectacles.
"Now I'm trendy, right?" he asked in jest. "I come from a poor family and those were the glasses my family could afford. I only wore contact lenses later when BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) academy commandant said that it would be hard to get in (to the academy) if I wore glasses," he said.
Then, his mother was concerned about hazards from wearing contact lenses but later gave in, for the sake of the boy's future. Obviously it has paid off, although not without dramas. Just a couple of days before the All-England tournament began, Kien Keat had an eye ulcer and it hurt him a lot to put his contact lenses on.
"For the first two days I suffered a bit," he related adding that he plans to perform corrective surgery when he finds the time. "I'm going for Lasik soon."
Throughout the interview and photo session at 1-Utama Shopping Complex in Petaling Jaya, their mobile phones did not stop ringing: In the lift, along the corridor or while they were snacking at a cafe. They are not too different from other guys their age except that the two have become instant celebrities after their phenomenal rise in the past few months.
Their six-month long partnership so far has taken the international badminton scene by storm, having raked in four major titles in just six outings: Asian Games, Malaysian Open, All-England and the Swiss Open. At the moment, the boys are ranked 10th in the world, and they have the potential to rise even higher if they do well in the coming Super Series matches.
Kien Keat and Boon Heong may not yet be as recognisable as singing sensations Datuk Siti Nurhaliza or Mawi but still, they were stopped by some fans throughout the afternoon; some just shaking their hands congratulating them while giggly schoolgirls got them to pose for pictures.
The boys have also been busy attending interviews and making appearances in events since becoming national heroes. In just the one week after their return, they have been greeted by ministers, congratulated by the Prime Minister and had a documentary on their lives aired on television.
Yet, they remain disinterested in the whole fame game. "Not much has changed actually," said Kien Keat. "Except that now I receive more SMSes when I win, and some (of the senders) I don't know who they are."
Throughout the four hours, the twosome were composed, patient and obliging. They were also comfortable talking about almost anything - their childhood, life on and off the court and their recent trips back to their hometown. During that trip, the two also took the opportunity to visit their respective schools where they were swamped by students and teachers alike.
"My (former) teacher gave me a book," Boon Heong said as he took out a small book entitled From a Conversationalist to a Public Speaker he had been carrying with him. "(My teacher) told me to improve my English ... but there's no Chinese translation. I can't understand it."
It was obvious that not much has changed in their routine and outlook. They have had to mature quickly; both left home at an early age to concentrate on their training and learnt to be independent.
The biggest difference now is that they lead more comfortable lives.
After the shoot, Boon Heong decided to buy the black Guess? T-shirt he wore for the shoot, fishing out a matching Louis Vuitton wallet from his bag.
The two would tell you that while their rise to the top 10 appeared meteoric, it is the product of many years of training and hard work, with many more to come. On Tuesday, they would have reported back to camp at Bukit Jalil where they would train six days a week to prepare for the upcoming tournaments over the next few months.
"Of course, training is tough. But to earn money, I have to work extra hard," Boon Heong explained adding: "Playing badminton is my work."
Kien Keat jokingly added, "If not for badminton, maybe I'll be a gangster now?" He was, however, serious when he said that the game changed his life. The big tournament, World Championships, is barely four months away and the strenuous routine is rolling in. Are they ready for the pressure?
"No pressure. I just play," Boon Heong said flatly, sinking into his chair.
The afternoon showed a different side of the two badminton champions - relaxed compared to the intent and feisty players on court we are used to seeing.
In person, they are light-hearted and jovial, refusing to dwell on the pressure of the rising expectations on them. They like looking good, and are stylish young men.
Typical of their generation, they believe in enjoying life to its fullest, as personified by their new LV sling bags.
They embody all that is so exuberant about youth - they are confident in their talent and optimistic about the future. For this pair at least, this looks like the beginning of an exciting journey. They are on the way to literally the top of the world in their career. Yet, they remain boys at heart ... happily reaping and relishing in the spoils of their victories.

JaCk™ 03-31-2007, 03:13 AM Rexy, YKH must take notice and control the publicity that KKK/TBH gains. they are badminton players, not supermodels or actors who enjoys publicity. focus on badminton, boys..
