Womens Singles - Zhu Lin vs Xie Xing Fang
Mens Singles - Lin Dan vs Chen Jin
Womens Doubles - Gao Ling/Huang Sui vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
Mens Doubles - Jae Sung/Yong Dae vs Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Yi Man
My predictions in Bold. Many would disagree with me on Mens Singles. But personally i think Chen Jin can take Lin Dan this time.
Anyway its just my prediction.. hehehe.. enjoy the Finals later today.
Baderz_Jas 01-27-2007, 10:56 AM ants, I agree with all of your prediction except the MS :o I don't know who will win but I hope/want  Lin Dan to win :D :p

yannie 01-27-2007, 12:10 PM Chen Jin will grill Lin Dan this time!!!
hcpoirot 01-27-2007, 12:29 PM Prediction:
Mixed Doubles - Gao Ling/Zheng Bo vs Kamilla Juhl/Thomas Laybourne. The hot newcomer in a roll!
Womens Singles - Zhu Lin vs Xie Xing Fang. Zhu Lin maybe can raise up her speed considering XXF play a long match against Lu Lan yesterday.
Mens Singles - Lin Dan vs Chen Jin. LD will fight to the end cause lost twice a row in tournaments maybe weaken his spot as China first MS in LYB eyes.
Womens Doubles - Gao Ling/Huang Sui vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen. Lately GL/HS always win against YW/ZJW.
Mens Doubles - Jung Jae Sung/Yong Dae vs Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Yi Man.
hcpoirot 01-27-2007, 12:37 PM KO 2007 did not been good to Indonesia players. PBSI already send their best teams (minus Taufik.) And the best results are worse than MO 2007, we only had 2 QF.
And PBSI still determined that we can win Sudirman Cup this year.
With what? We did not even had one guaranteed point from MS , MD or XD now. And we already lost 2 points from WS and WD if we met China. (hopefully in final)
Sometimes PBSI officials had enormous big mouths. In this area, PBSI and BAM maybe also related. Both of them loved to targeted very high achievement without looking for the fact, can their players achieve what the officials wants? (Example winner or at least a SF)
Haven't they heard the wisdom proverb Golden Is Silence?
madbad 01-27-2007, 12:46 PM You guys obviously haven't considered the LYB factor. I would say LD and XXF are sure to win unless LYB lets the matches go on fairly. That's not to say they won't win anyway but you know where I'm coming from.
My calls (winners in bold as always)
MS LD -CJ
As well as CJ has played, I think LD wants to prove to everyone his MO outing was a fluke. He's a proud guy and wants to sit on top of the world
WS ZL - XXF
I can see an upset happening here. XXF was pushed to the brink by Lu Lan and may be a little fatigued. Plus she's recovering from the flu. I hope the LYB factor doesn't come into play here
XD Gao Ling/Zheng Bo - Kamilla Juhl/Thomas Laybourne
Can't see it going any other way. That Gao Ling is something else
WD Gao Ling/Huang Sui - Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
Make it double for GL. Will LYB allow a fair match to ensue?
MD Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae - Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Yi Man
Ankle injury? What ankle injury? LYD and JJS will triumph in an entertaining battle of Korea
freelast 01-27-2007, 01:01 PM WD Gao Ling/Huang Sui - Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
Make it double for GL. Will LYB allow a fair match to ensue?
What did you mean?
As far as I know, LYB and the national team of China don't like Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen. The poor pair Yang/Zhang were even asked to retire before Beijing Olympics to let others crowned the gold.
Also as far as I know, the competition between Chinese teammates were more firerceful, because that head to head impacts more for their rankings and opportunities to play international badminton. So, for Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen it is a must win, otherwise, they would be forced to retire. Gao Ling/Huang Sui will be guaranteed to play Olympics no matter what.
z3048018 01-27-2007, 01:25 PM i was so tempted to predict an upset in the WS but i really do like XXF!! ;)
LI De Quan 01-27-2007, 06:49 PM Mixed Doubles - Gao Ling/Zheng Bo vs Kamilla Juhl/Thomas Laybourne.
I hope/want them to win!!!!!!!!!!!!!
then they will be doha asian games Gold Medalist and Malaysia , Korea super series winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(2006-12-9-----2007-1-28)
Mixed Doubles - Gao Ling/Zheng Bo vs Kamilla Rytter-Juhl/Thomas Laybourn
Zheng Bo and Gao Ling are much better a pair than with Zhang Jun, and even better to watch. Zhang is very one dimensional and relies on his big smash. but Zheng Bo has much more control, variations and precision.
Womens Singles - Zhu Lin vs Xie Xing Fang
Zhu Lin is a version of XXF and ZN, but on top of that adds more grace and fluidity.
Mens Singles - Lin Dan vs Chen Jin
Frankly though, i think Chen Jin will have a hard time beating Lin Dan. he is closer to LCW: not powerful enough, not fast enough when compared to Lin Dan. but i think he is a hardworker and have great fighting spirit.
Womens Doubles - Gao Ling/Huang Sui vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen
Mens Doubles - Jae Sung/Yong Dae vs Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Yi Man
cooler 01-27-2007, 07:47 PM Mixed Doubles -
Mens Singles - Lin Dan vs [B]Chen Jin
Frankly though, i think Chen Jin will have a hard time beating Lin Dan. he is closer to LCW: not powerful enough, not fast enough when compared to Lin Dan. but i think he is a hardworker and have great fighting spirit.
reason why i see CJ has better chance than LD to win a gold for china not because CJ is better but he has very good fighting spirit and not the pressure of expecting to win like in the case of LD - not a darkhorse but a white knight for china;)
alfa2 01-27-2007, 07:54 PM i think this will b a boring final as in MS it's china against china and MD only the Koreans make it through. No bashing needed for msians team though......all naik kereta already....:p:p
freelast 01-27-2007, 08:45 PM Mens Singles - Lin Dan vs Chen Jin
Since so many people bet on Chen Jin, so it would earn huge money if I bet on Lin Dan to win. That's my suggestion to Sandy's great job of betting game. I don't know how Sandy gives different points for different player in different match. That's the reason I haven't joined in. One very ironical phenomenon is that Sandy is the best one in betting score. If the points were given by himself, then he should not be that high in scores, average 10 points per bet, which means himself doesn't think the distribution of the points are fair.
I don't belittle his job. He's done great job there. But I have just another approach. Don't give different points for betting who's going to win, but let all the game players to decide. For example, if 100 points for a match, there are 10 people bet on A win over B, and only 1 people bet B win over A, then if A wins, that 10 people will get 10 points each. But if B wins, then that one guy will get 100 points, because he's the only guy correct.
So let me back to the prediction here, since most people bet on Chen Jin to win, So I vote for Lin Dan, actually, I didn't see why Lin Dan could fail again. He is just too much for Chen Jin to handle.
Mixed Doubles - Gao Ling/Zheng Bo vs Kamilla Rytter-Juhl/Thomas Laybourn
Zheng Bo and Gao Ling are no doubt the best mixed double now. They are not only the best mixed double, but also the best in all badminton events now to have the biggest chance to win. Lin Dan was the best last year, no body can stopped him for quite a long time, but since the advant of Zheng Bo / Gao Ling, the chaos in mixed double fighting has finally ended.
pramilainc 01-27-2007, 08:49 PM How come no one here at BC root for Thomas, our Thomas... ?

i remember there was a tourney where LYD/JJS and HJM/LJJ qualified in the finals and in the end HJM/LJJ conceded a walkover and LYD/JJS crowned the champion. I think it was in 2006. I could not remember which tourney though.

i guess a lot have to do with the all china affairs and MD also all korean affair, only XD finalist comprise of different nations
that is probably the true reason.
badminton although in the surface is an individual sport, in reality is really a national sport, fans tend to careless when it ends up an internal affair.

Inky2000 01-28-2007, 06:19 AM Can't wait till Thursday for the new ranking list that incorporates KO results. Therefore, I did a rough calculation to come out with a rough ranking list for MS & MD,
* MS *
1(-) LD
2(-) BCL
3(-) CH

10(-) Boonsak

bananaboy 01-28-2007, 08:06 AM Now that the finals are over, congrats to all winners(Gao Ling is amazing!!!:D). We can make an educated guess that the outcome of the MS final was not affected by LYB at all.
If LYB was involved, he would probably prefer CJ to win, so he can get into the top 4 spot in world ranking to create a situation where Chinese players will get the best seedings, and will only meet each other until semi-finals.. except Chen Yu being the one left behind.
Now, LD won the match and Chen Jin's ranking point is not enough to get in front of LCW and PG, and he along with Chen Yu may possibly have to meet one of LD, BCL, or CH in matches before the semi-finals.

I think the ranking ater korea open should be:
Lin Dan, Chen Jin, Chen Hong, Peter Gade, Bao Chunlai.
If China wanted the top 4 position, Lin Dan would have lost to Bao CHunlai.

I didn't work out the rough ranking by "I think", but based on the ranking points. Before KO, the gap between the ranking points of the 5th ranked LCW and the 6th ranked CJ was about 4,500. At KO, LCW earns 5,040 for his quarterfinal appearance while CJ earns the runner-up points of 7,800 (i.e., only 2,840 points' difference between the runner-up and and the quarterfinalist). Therefore, unless the "depreciation" of both players' points earned months ago influences a lot, CJ couldn't overtake LCW, not to mention the 2nd ranked BCL with a large gap of 8,000 points before KO.

So your calculation (after multiple editions) concludes that CJ's ranking still behind BCL and LCW. According to your final edition of calculation, your order is:
BCL > LCW > CJ (your calculation)
Actually, your ranking for after KO is the same as the current ranking, so you don't think the Korea open will change the order of those 3 players.
Anyhow, I am still sticking to my original thinking (which I missed LCW), which is just opposite:
CJ > LCW > BCL (my thinking)
which means the KO turn their ranking just up side down.
Let's see who's right after the final ranking release. okay?

..i'll say almost impossible to win all 5 events in any tourney(s);) ..Hmm, i wonder, when was the last time that particular feat(1 country sweeping all 5 events in a tourney) had been achieved??..Or has it been done before??..Anyone in BC knows??..  :p ;)

Let's see who's right after the final ranking release. okay?
Here's how I did my rough calculation for the three players' ranking points:
Before KO:
BCL - 59860
LCW - 56096
CJ - 51573
After KO:
BCL: 59860 + 6420 (points earned by a SS semifinal appearance) - "depreciation" of earlier rankings earned = around 65000
LCW: 56096 + 5040 (SS quarterfinalist) - "depreciation" = around 61000
CJ: 51573 + 7800 (SS runner-up) - "depreciation" = around 59000
Therefore, unless the "depreciation" component (my assumption is that the "depreciation" for each player is less than 1000 points) makes a big difference, CJ could only come close to LCW and is no way he could overtake BCL. There's a big gap in pre-KO ranking points between BCL and CJ to start with.
Angelou 01-28-2007, 07:38 PM ..i'll say almost impossible to win all 5 events in any tourney(s);) ..Hmm, i wonder, when was the last time that particular feat(1 country sweeping all 5 events in a tourney) had been achieved??..Or has it been done before??..Anyone in BC knows??..  :p ;)
I think in 1989, the chinese won all 5 world championships. beating the indonesian record of winning 4 out of the 5 world championships sometime before that
Inky2000 01-28-2007, 09:12 PM Okay, now I do a more precise calculation of BCL, LCW and CJ's WR points by following the booklet,
http://badmintoninternational.net/newseditor/data/new_ranking_booklet.pdf
The ranking points awarded in events have already been revised but I assume that the calculation principle remains the same.
*** BCL ***
Top-10 in the past 52 weeks:
Korea SS '07 (SF) 6420
Malaysia SS '07 (RU) 7800
China Open '06 (RU) 7650
WC '06 (RU) 8500
KO '06 (winner) 9000
Thailand Open '06 (QF) 3300
Macau Open '06 (QF) 3850
S'pore Open '06 (SF) 5600
Ina Open '06 (RU) 7650
Thomas Cup '06 5709
Total: 65479
*** LCW ***
Korea SS '07 (QF) 5040
M'sia SS '07 (QF) 5040
JO '06 (SF) 5600
WC '06 (QF) 5500
HKO '06 (RU) 7650
Macau O '06 (RU) 5950
Taipei O '06 (RU) 6800
Ina Open' 06 (1\16) 3600
TC '06 6705
ABC '06 (winner) 7000
Total: 58885
*** CJ ***
Korea SS '07 (RU) 7800
M'sia SS '07 (QF) 5040
CO '06 (SF) 6300
WC '06 (QF) 5500
HK O '06 (SF) 6300
Thailand O '06 (RU) 5100
Taipei O' 06 (SF) 5600
TC '06 4882
China Masters (winner) 9000

So, it's still BCL > LCW > CJ. Amazingly, the WR point gap between BCL and CJ will actually widen due to the "Top-10 in the last 52 weeks" rule.
Prior to Korea SS'07, the lowest points earned by BCL among the Top-10 point-earning events that he has participated was JO'06 (800 points only due to his 2nd-round defeat). With his SF appearance in Korea SS which has earned himself 6420 points, the JO'06 points are striken out from the Top-10. That means he gains 6420 - 800 = 5620 points.
On the other hand, with his RU appearance in Korea SS which has earned himself 7800 points, the previously lowest point-earning event (Macau Open - 3850) is striken out from CJ's top-10. That means he gains 7800 - 3850 = 3950 points.
Given that BCL is ALREADY 8287 points ahead of CJ (59860 vs. 51573) prior to the Korea SS, the new WR point gap between the two players is 8287+5620-3950 = 9957. It seems that CJ needs to work harder to catch up with BCL, e.g., CJ advances to at least QF in the next two SS events while BCL skips both events.
CLELY 01-28-2007, 11:26 PM ..i'll say almost impossible to win all 5 events in any tourney(s);) ..Hmm, i wonder, when was the last time that particular feat(1 country sweeping all 5 events in a tourney) had been achieved??..Or has it been done before??..Anyone in BC knows??..  :p ;)
In 1987, when 5thWorld Champ was held in Beijing, CHN made clean sweep through :
MS -- Yang Yang
WS -- Han Aiping
MD -- LYB/Tian Bing Yi
WD -- Guan Weizhen/Lin Ying
XD -- Wang Pengren/Shi Fangjing
Two years later in Jakarta/1989 CHN got 4 titles from world-meet :
MS -- Yang Yang ; WS -- Li Lingwei ; MD -- LYB/TBY ; WD -- GWZ/LY.
XD grabbed by KOR's pair Park Joo Bong / Chung Myung Hee.
*From KOR SS Final:
- CHN is very dominance in 3 divisions but very weak in MD (as usual)
- Special credit to KOR's MD, beat two formidable pairs :KKK/TBH and T/C
- LD's victory isn't enough meaningful because he didn't KO any big names here (except his strong escorts BCL & CJ). Madrid story happened again!
If LD won last week in KL, exactly his triumphant was so much better and superb. After he defeated TH-KJ-PG and BCL in final. WoW all of them are elite shuttlers...
- This final in Seoul yesterday was BORING compare than in KL. It's not quite good to make bdm more globally. Seems so many empty seats in that olympic-class stadium.
Congratz for the Chinese and Korean!

Actually, you would be quite surprised  if you knew the results. Not only once, actually many times, China badminton players have swept all titles in many high star tournaments and even world championships.
I don't have all the records, but just for the 6 star China open, China have swept all titles in the year 1987 at Nanjing, same year, swept all champions at World championships in Beijing; then in 1995, 6 star China open, China swept all titles again in Chengdu; then in 2001, they did again and again, swept all titles in Ningbo.
I don't remember other tournaments, I'm sure they must have completed the similar feats elsewhere. Such as world cup, and China masters give them the home court advantages also.
2cents 01-29-2007, 12:04 AM Okay, now I do a more precise calculation of BCL, LCW and CJ's WR points by following the booklet,
.
Your detail works really surprised me. Thanks first for your hardwork, but unfortunately, they are not correct ;) (many different errors). Even I haven't calculated yet, I'm pretty sure the new ranking after Korea open is in the order of:
CJ > LCW > BCL
Please check the ibf web site when it's available, I'll also check it and let you know. :D

I don't see what's wrong with my way of calculation, as I've followed exactly the world ranking guidebook. I followed the same way to calcuate the pre-KO WR points of the players and they tally with the WR points announced on BWF website (BCL - 59860; LCW - 56096; CJ - 51573). It's also hard to believe with a wide margin between BCL and CJ in the pre-KO ranking points, how could CJ catch up with BCL right after KO with the former being the runner-up while the latter a semi-finalist (as the difference of the points earned between both players at the event is only 1380).
Are you actually referring to the Super Series ranking system? It's different from the World Ranking system.
ctjcad 01-29-2007, 12:53 AM ..angelou, CLELY & 2cents, thanks for refreshing and pointing those facts again;) ..So, indeed, it's possible:cool: ..But looking at those facts, they also don't occur as often...
*Yah, i stopped following the world of badminton since around 1985 and started to pick up the sport again around 2002..So, understandably, i was totally lost with the history..hehe:p :( :D ;)
hcyong 01-29-2007, 04:02 AM I don't see what's wrong with my way of calculation, as I've followed exactly the world ranking guidebook.
You must strike out the points for Korea Open 2006 when you include the points for Korea Open 2007. So, Bao's 2006 win does not count.
The booklet is outdated.

Okay! Is there any other new rule that I'm not aware of? Anyway, I found another error - I only counted the top-9 events of CJ. With the above-stated rule plus the Macau Open points that I mistakenly stroke off earlier, CJ will indeed be ranked ahead of BCL.
Still, may I request you to show me any webpage on the latest badminton world ranking system to prove your claim? I personally think that such a new rule doesn't make sense even if it does exist.

You are right this time :D , IBF is always ridiculous. I have criticized them for many years, but first, I got to fully understand them.
Do you agree the order after KO: CJ > LCW > BCL now? Then I don't bother to check it up next Thursday.

The website cannot be totally relied on, but that rule was enforced some time last year. Can't seem to find the publication anyway.
Anyway, there is some sense to the rule, but not enough to justify it, I think.
extremenanopowe 01-29-2007, 09:49 AM Congratulations to all the winners. Looks like its quite evenly distributed so far. Well done. The new ranking system seems to be working.:D
