Dreamzz 02-01-2007, 05:31 AM Badminton: Asiad champs favourites to lift national GP Finals crown
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: With veteran doubles pair of Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah not among the qualifiers for the Proton National Grand Prix Finals, the spotlight will be on Doha Asian Games gold medallists Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in the tournament in Kuala Terengganu from Feb 8-11.
With the third leg of the Super Series, the All-England only taking place next month, the top national shuttlers will focus their attention on the Finals before taking a break for the Chinese New Year.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong have produced sensational results on the international stage since they forged a partnership for the Japan Open late last year. They emerged as the runners-up and went on to end a 36-year gold drought for Malaysia in the Asiad badminton in Doha last December.
And in the opening round of the inaugural Super Series, the Malaysian Open, they went all the way from the qualifying tournament to lift the title. In last week's Korean Open, they reached the semi-finals.
Being the best performing pair in the national team over the last three months, Kien Keat-Boon Heong will start as the favourites to become the new national champions and secure an early ang pow for the Chinese New Year.
For Kien Keat, he will be bidding to win the national title for the third time. He won it, partnering Chan Chong Ming, in 2004 and 2005.
However, Kien Keat-Boon Heong can expect stiff challenges from their teammates in the battle for the RM11,000 winners' purse.
They have been drawn in Group A with defending champions Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui, Khoo Chung Chiat-Mohd Razif Latif and Ong Jian Guo-Goh Wei Shem.
Group B will also see close fights for semi-final spots. It comprises Kuala Lumpur Open champions Chan Chong Ming-Hoon Thien How, Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Latif and Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock and Bukit Jalil Sports School's Lim Khim Wah-Mak Hee Chun.
National chief coach Yap Kim Hock said: “The standards are close among the national pairs. Kien Keat-Boon Heong may be the favourites but it will not be easy for them. It is going to be interesting to see who emerge as the winners this time.”
At the Kuala Lumpur Open, Kien Keat-Boon Heong were beaten by Fairuzizuan-Woon Fui in the semi-finals.
Lee Chong Wei will also be in the spotlight in Kuala Terengganu. He will be bidding to win the men's singles crown for the fifth consecutive time.
Chong Wei should have no problem advancing to the semi-finals from Group A and he is expected to play against Group C top seed Yeoh Kay Bin for a place in the final.
An interesting fight is in store in Group B between Kuan Beng Hong and Wong Choong Hann for a place in the semi-finals. The winner is likely to play against Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

i'm hoping that's the case, but i think that MT/LWF will win this time if the semis line-up goes according to plan. i believe rexy will be expecting no less than an finals appearance from them, so if they fall before then, he will really be   .

too bad favourites chin/wong withdrew because chin was injured
hope she get well soon and be fully fit for AE
tjl_vanguard 02-08-2007, 10:06 PM great upset by Liew Daren....
anyways even if BH is injured or not, this win will definitely make him stronger in his will to "eat" more senior players haha...
**KZ** 02-08-2007, 11:06 PM LCW struggled to beat Kuan Kam Chung too....
terry 02-08-2007, 11:21 PM Poor KBH fall in sick at this time.

CCM/HTH lost to GTC/Zakry
Yeoh kay Bin lost to James Chua
KBH has already gone back to KL.

so nice your friends went
what about chin eei hui
did they see her
how is her injury
hope she gets well soon
thanks
Dreamzz 02-09-2007, 11:04 AM hmmm, seems like both CCM/HTH and TBS/OSH won 2 games out of 3.
but then CCM/HTH beat TBS/OSH, so does this mean they are group winners?
if so, the semis will be :
MF/LWF vs TBS/OSH
KKK/TBH vs CCM/HTH
oh yeah, the results board is operational again.
Dreamzz 02-09-2007, 11:07 AM and MS looks like this:
LCW vs JC
HH vs WCH
only surprise for me was james beating YKB, 21-13 21-13, quite soundly as well!
Dreamzz 02-09-2007, 11:11 AM for WS, no surprises in group A, though i don't know who progresses as runner up because the other 3 ladies all won 1 and lost 2, quite a merry-go-round, each one beating the other.
so it's:
Mew Choo vs Julia
Lydia vs ???
cheeyf 02-09-2007, 11:45 AM lydia vs Ooi Swee Wern
Dreamzz 02-09-2007, 11:53 AM lydia vs Ooi Swee Wern
i see, how is that decided?
based on points/sets won/lost?
Hendra89 02-09-2007, 12:07 PM I think James Chua gained his strengh back. he was national champion before, in 2002
maybe, lee chong wei will gonna have some problems :P
MaLiq 02-09-2007, 12:11 PM looks like GTC/MZL 's form is goin from bad to worse...haihzz..
n LCW also had a hard time defeating the junior player....not sure if he can win this tournament IMO..but all the best to him anyway.. =)
MaLiq 02-09-2007, 12:15 PM wow...juz looked at the score of MFT/LWF vs KKK/TBH 's match...it was a really tight match but i think KKK's fever got to him in the end...MFT/LWF won 24/22, 24/26, 21/8...i wished i could watch that match...will today's(sturday) matches be aired on TV ??
cheeyf 02-10-2007, 01:22 AM i see, how is that decided?
based on points/sets won/lost?
i'm not sure
knew it from the star
maybe match 1st then sets won if it is tie
just guess
hehe
by the way
anyone go and watch it?
please share some pictures if u took them
i dont think tv is going 2 show any matches today
rtm dont even have daily reports or highlights about it
so dissapointed as badminton is so popular in MAS n yet rtm act like nothing is happening
alfa2 02-10-2007, 01:45 AM yeah very disappointing. anyway its just the usual RTM.haihhhh....astro showing?
**KZ** 02-10-2007, 07:53 AM national championships have always been ignored....too bad....today's results have been updated
http://www.bam.org.my:8080/ProtonGPFinal2006/upload/results/daily_results.html
**KZ** 02-10-2007, 07:55 AM fairuz/lin lost to bin shen n soon hock in easy straight sets.....that proved that their still inconsistent.......21-17, 21-15 for tan/ong
sherlyn 02-10-2007, 08:29 AM congratz to tbs/osh.. they've been playing well lately :)
so worry for fairuz/lin inconsistent play tho...:(
anyone knows what happened to hth/ccm? kkk/tbh juz walkover them today
haifeng4ever 02-10-2007, 09:06 AM Anyway, hope KKK can get both champion for mix and men doubles.
Jessica 02-10-2007, 09:07 AM Ya..i also wondering why KKK/TBH didn't play...Maybe is the problem with KKK since he was sick a few day ago.
haifeng4ever 02-10-2007, 09:10 AM Ya..i also wondering why KKK/TBH didn't play...Maybe is the problem with KKK since he was sick a few day ago.
Oops, Jessica, u'll making a mistake here. CCM/HTH will the one who withdrew from the match. Not KKK/TBH.;) ;) ;)
Jessica 02-10-2007, 09:21 AM Opps ya....sorry...I make a mistake and thank a lot haifeng4ever for correcting me.Just hope KKK win win both in XD and also MD...
kenny7_2006 02-10-2007, 09:53 AM now why did CCM/HTH withdraw?? anyone know??
mirrura 02-10-2007, 10:27 AM no one knows what happened to CCM/HTH yet. They saw HTH in the stadium, but no sign of CCM. hhmm...
CCM is having backpain. When i was chatting with him over the phone in the afternoon, he told me he might not be able to play in the evening. He is resting in the hotel instead of going to the stadium to watch the games. Its probably due the the gruesome training that they had. KKK is also suffering a sore throat. But i hope he will win both tourney tonight.
haifeng4ever 02-10-2007, 09:54 PM KKK is also suffering a sore throat. But i hope he will win both tourney tonight.
Two days ago, KKK suffering from fever and now sore throat. Everyone seems to be suffering from illness. :D :D :D
cheeyf 02-10-2007, 09:55 PM seems like many people are not fully fit because of the training.
what about Gan Teik Chai/Fong Chew Yen
why they walkover too?
ya hope kkk can win XD n MD
should be no problem in XD but in MD will be tougher but i think they can win too
Dreamzz 02-11-2007, 02:08 AM yeah, i hope rexy doesn't impose this kinda training just before the all-england, it seems that our shuttlers can't handle it. i'm not sure whether they need to get used to it, or it was really that tough, but from all the withdrawals, it's not a good sign.
cheeyf 02-11-2007, 07:37 AM hehe
i think rexy wont do that before a major tournament
i think it is both tough and the players are also not used to it
ya so many withdrawals makes the competition this time like not even because some players are not fit.
anway BAM so slow in updating the results today
haih
anyone know what how is chin eei hui
she was injured during training and have to withdraw from wd
poor her
hope she gets well soon and do well next month
**KZ** 02-11-2007, 08:25 AM results have been updated except MD

haifeng4ever 02-11-2007, 09:34 AM Yup, congratulation to KKK for winning the mix and men doubles.
MD result: KKK/TBH beat TBS/OSH 21-10,21-13
LCW still beat Hafiz handily plus the youngsters under Rashid are still way behind compare to the national squad, ... extreme situation call for extreme measure so I propose Rexy take over the MS department too
2cents 02-11-2007, 11:37 AM No hope for Malaysia MS ...
Malaysia hope is still fully loaded on Lee CW's shoulders. He's invincible at least among all players in Malaysia, no matter who trained and where trained.
I am still surprised that Lee CW defeated semin-finalist and finalist so easily, by 21/7, 21/8, 21/14, 21/15. If we say Lin Dan is leading the world by far, then Lee CW is leading the Malaysia by even further.

Armotec500 02-11-2007, 07:48 PM From TheStar Online:
" Badminton: Chong Wei goes five-up
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA TERENGGANU: Lee Chong Wei is still the nation’s best player.
The 25-year-old proved it at the Proton National Grand Prix Finals at the Kuala Terengganu Indoor Stadium here yesterday by beating Mohd Hafiz Hashim 21-14, 21-15 for his fifth consecutive title in the championships.
Chong Wei, who has not been beaten in local tournaments since winning the 2002 National GP Finals, was ecstatic after the win and hoped that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) would give him permission to skip the local circuit this year.
“Hafiz should be credited for putting up a fight despite his ankle injury. He was certainly slower than in our previous match in the Kuala Lumpur Open,” said Chong Wei, who took home RM7,000.
“Now I hope I can take a break from the local circuit. It will be very hectic and I hope the BAM will give me the permission,” he said.
After winning his first title for the year, Chong Wei said he hoped to achieve similiar success at international level starting with the All-England from March 6-11.
“I could have done better in the Opens in Malaysia and South Korea last month. Now, I feel confident and I am determined to get my hands on the first international title of the year,” he said.
Hafiz was disappointed and said: “I tried to keep pace with him but at the same time I was trying to be cautious. But this performance has given me confidence ahead of the All-England.”
In the women’s singles, Wong Mew Choo won her fourth national title with a 21-12, 21-13 win over Lydia Cheah, whose attacking game was sadly littered with mistakes. Mew Choo picked up RM4,000.
“I’m happy to win the national title again after being injured the last two years. Hopefully, I will be excused from some of the local tournaments this year,” said Mew Choo.
In the men’s doubles, Asian Games champions and Malaysian Open winners Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong justified their number one status in the country when they tamed Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock 21-12, 21-15 in just 28 minutes. The title was worth RM11,000.
The only upset of the day was created by Julia Wong-Haw Chiou Hwee in the women’s doubles. The Project 2010-12 squad shuttlers upset national players Fong Chew Yen-See Phui Leng 21-16, 25-23. "
Well, it is true that LCW still can beat Hafiz but Hafiz was not 100% fit because of ankle injury :(
Anyway, congrats to all the winner. Hope you guys do the best in this coming AE

To summarise, the Proton Open did not disclose anything we did not know :
Singles:
1. LCW is still the Malaysian Jaguh
2. Hafiz is ahead of Choong Han (2nd and 3rd)
3. KBH, YKB, James Chua are still wanderers (not contenders)
4. Project 2010-2012 players are still far behind (lacking mental strength)
Doubles:
1. KKK-TBH are clearly the Malaysian Jaguh
2. Chong Ming-Thien Hoon play good sometimes
3. OSH-TBS - still a 'bit' team but capable of growing up
4. Farizuzuan-Lin - now become 'so so' combination
Only LCW and KKK-TBH will give Malaysia a possibility of titles this year. The rest will just make up the numbers.

it'll be hard on LCW but KKK-TBH big chance... haha
X Ball 02-11-2007, 09:13 PM it'll be hard on LCW but KKK-TBH big chance... haha
I agree it will be hard on LCW but the guy is capable on his day, if he wants it real bad. At the end of the day, there is a lot of motivation with the big dollars - one win and it is worth anywhere from US$15,000 to US$24,000 (a year's pay for some Malaysians).
KKK-TBHs' bank accounts would expand this year for sure. I think it was very clever of RExy to split KKK from Chong Ming to team with Boon Heong. This is the 'DREAM TEAM' for Malaysian doubles.
To be successful, one must 'want it badly'. One has to be so dedicated. Hafiz had it for a while and lost it (so easy to lose it when your bank account is full). LCW had it and is still hanging on but I think he also got sloppy after being successful early last year.
cheeyf 02-12-2007, 02:10 AM yea we can depend on LCW n KKK/TBH for titiles this year
but both still need to imporve especially their mental strength.
hope that they n others too will deliver
after this, all players can rest well
n may those who are sick and injured recover quickly for AE

be poor n win.....:D:D:D:D:D yeah, i agree that the price money is the main target for most of the player to win the competition except for AE or WC, where for some, honour is more important than price money. TH wanted to win Asiad so badly even though the price money is very little or none. for me i'll go for the money......and when i have had enough, i'll go for the honour.
