I have something similar to that, but not as ugly. I cannot play without them.
They are for Osgood-Schlatter's which is a tearing of the patella tendon from teh bone causing a calcium buildup. They are extremely helpful at alleviating pain for this as they act as a surrogate tendon and take some of the pressure off your connective tissue. Many people use them for patella tendonitis but I'm nto sure how effective they are in that regard. THey sure don't help my tendonitis.
I use cho-pat straps, which are similar to those, and are all that separates me from playing at a high level and being bench-ridden.

Westwood, you have the same surname as me (assuming it's your surname), and you also have the same knee problem as me! Weird!my little brother also has OS in his knees

not only from jumping, but when you lunge, you put pressure on that area of the knee. The knee strap tries to reduce or spread the pressure.

clearly we're the same person. or related.
if you live in britain and have ancestors from clacton-on-sea whose first names are all arthur, then yes, we're all related.
or, we just share the same name as a district in my city and a hell of a lot of other british people.
but i wish we didn't share this injury. it's a bugger.
