View Full Version : Taufik Will Play at the AE 2007- BBC
jamesd20 03-02-2007, 07:32 AM Taufik 'will play at All England'
By Mark Barden
Hidayat is no stranger to controversy
All England Championships organisers say they expect Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat to play in Birmingham despite media reports that he has withdrawn.
The Indonesian star is due to play Hafiz Hashim of Malaysia in the first round at the National Indoor Arena when the tournament begins on Wednesday.
Reports claimed he had pulled out after a row with his national association.
But tournament director Darren Parks told BBC Sport: "To date, we have had no withdrawal from Taufik."
Parks said: "After seeing the news reports we contacted the Indonesian Badminton Association for confirmation, but they came back and said 'We don't know why you are asking'.
"So officially Taufik is still in the tournament."
The Associated Press in Jakarta claimed Taufik had opted not to travel to the UK after disputing the eligibility of Indonesian players in the men's doubles event.
"It's a shame because I have prepared well," the 25-year-old was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.
Taufik, twice an All England finalist and a former world champion, has clashed with his badminton officials in Indonesia on numerous occasions.
Unseeded in Birmingham, he has suffered a slump in form recently and crashed out of last month's Malaysian Open in the first round.
Last October, Taufik lost the Japan Open final to China's Lin Dan after his form and confidence collapsed in the final game.
In August, he was docked ranking points after storming out of a match against Lin at the Hong Kong Open in protest at a line call.

DinkAlot 03-02-2007, 07:36 AM I hope Taufik plays in the AE. I guess we won't know for sure until he step onto the court. :p
kenny7_2006 03-02-2007, 07:42 AM haih, one minute he says he wanna pull out, nex they say he's still innit...
i want him 2 play coz i wanna see him win the AE, but i also dun wanna see him play coz i dun like him, and hafiz gets a free ride... haha.... looks like im on d fence for this one!
Jessica 03-02-2007, 07:46 AM Ya...Best of luck to him.
jamesd20 03-02-2007, 07:46 AM Bear in mind that he (taufik) does not say he will play in the article and niether do PBSI.
It simply states that the Tournament director asked INA Badminton if he was playing or not (with respect to the rumours) and they did not give an answer, so the Director has to assume on the entries that he is.
bananaboy 03-02-2007, 07:57 AM Isn't it strange how Taufik always does something silly before a tournament which he really "wants" to win???:rolleyes:
Before AG 06, he would 1. car accident(which he said he didn't hit and run)
2. intentionally lost the Japan open final round
3. The famous HK open walkout
Before Indo open 06, he would get into a silly situation of being accused of an affair in the past + father of a child...
Now, before AE 07... he is putting a question in people's minds as to whether he will be part of the tournament or not.
Tournaments(from last year to now) which he participated without any controversy prior... he lost all of them... :p
Dreamzz 03-02-2007, 08:04 AM well well well, the prodigal son returns eh?
it's a bit unfair to say that he crashed out of the MO in the first round, faced against LD, most players would have 'crashed out'.

There must be something we aren't being told here... :p. Perhaps it's all part of BWF's big plan to raise the popularity of Badminton!
That article lol... "He has suffered a slump in form", then they go on to list all these tournaments except the AG >_>. And like JamesD20 said, there wasn't any proof in that article at all (I don't think that was the point of course... what was the point?). All it really says is that technically he is still in the tournament. I guess it gives a tiny bit of hope but I'll wait until the tournament starts and we finally get an answer.

don't forget the one where he grabbed media attention by saying ' lin dan is arrogant'.
ixory 03-02-2007, 09:34 AM Are TH playing tactics here ??.Btw if he really play AE wanna wish Good Luck.
jerby 03-02-2007, 09:35 AM I don't know what I would find more stupid...him not playing, or him swallowing his words and playing...even íf he wins, what a stain...
TKG2609 03-02-2007, 12:30 PM better he play in AE ... at least we can watch some good matches.... lindan beat taufik, then beat peter gade n beat chen jin/lee chong wei ... hehehe

Taufik 'will play at All England'
By Mark Barden
..jamesd20, thanks for the report...Hmm, i think the AE organizer is still keeping hope and crossing his fingers that Taufik will show up and play...All the reports the last few days have indicated that Taufik is not going..However, from your report, apparently the AE organizer hasn't received any "confirmation" from PBSI themselves...
Is Taufik playing mind games with us and the rest of competition, again??..
It would be funny if, come next week, Taufik shows up and then says to the media & everone "Haha, fooled you all" (with a big :D and a :p and a ;) )..hehehe:p :D ;)
madbad 03-02-2007, 01:31 PM All I know is that the AE would be a better tournament with Taufik in it. So I'm hoping this report is true.
DinkAlot 03-02-2007, 01:52 PM don't forget the one where he grabbed media attention by saying ' lin dan is arrogant'.
And now NGP grabs the headline and says, "Taufik said Lin Dan is 'arrogant' but Taufik is cocky." :p ;)
jamesd20 03-02-2007, 04:27 PM thanks for the report...Hmm, i think the AE organizer is still keeping hope and crossing his fingers that Taufik will show up and play...All the reports the last few days have indicated that Taufik is not going..However, from your report, apparently the AE organizer hasn't received any "confirmation" from PBSI themselves...
Is Taufik playing mind games with us and the rest of competition,
I don't think taufik is doing anything, he says he isn't going, so he isn't going.
The report (which is a bit of a non-story IMHO but the headline sounds good!) doesn't say anything. The jist is that the Organizer asked them (PBSI) "are the rumours true?" and they niether confirmed or denied it. I bet if the organizer asked Taufik he woud say "no"
Time will tell however...........4 days to go.
yannie 03-02-2007, 04:34 PM I'm pretty sure he won't go.
DinkAlot 03-02-2007, 04:58 PM I'm pretty sure he won't go.

cooler 03-02-2007, 05:33 PM You have your "inside" contacts Yan-Yan? or just a hunch? :p
a lady hunch:D
I think pbsi is playing coy so any bad outcome is taufik's fault.
Of course pbsi won't cancel taufik's room and ticket. Seem like no one is gonna blink so it may go to a stalemate.
advice to taufik: since ur not going, sell your plane tickets and hotel room reservation on ebay or give them to your fren.(i'm sure indra like to go to AE) :D

If that happens, we will hear Indra screaming his lungs out just like that Chinese kid did during last year's All England.:p

..i think that's why the AE Organizer contacted PBSI perhaps to get a confirmation abt the report, so in case he won't go, they can do a re-draw(MS)...But for some reason PBSI still denied the report that Taufik is not going to AE...Taufik is holding up PBSI and, in turn, PBSI are holding up the AE Organizer, at the end both parties are holding up everybody involved/following the AE:p:(...Boy, what a >mess<!!:p
Btw, how late can they do a re-draw?? Can they do it this coming Monday, if indeed Taufik is not coming??..
*sigh* anyways, like cooler said "if no one is gonna blink", and budge, everyone's gonna feel the effect...It's like if Taufik can't make any noise(s) *ON THE COURT*, in this AE, he'll stir up something *OFF THE COURT*..And like our NGP/DinkAlot often wrote, PBSI & Taufik are indeed "The Drama Queens of badminton"..:p:D;)
DinkAlot 03-02-2007, 07:13 PM And like our NGP/DinkAlot often wrote, PBSI & Taufik are indeed "The Drama Queens of badminton"..:p:D;)
In Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness, Kurtz says, "The horror, the horror!"
In Badminton, with respect to Taufik and the PBSI, we say, "Oh, the drama, the drama!" :p :D :D :D :D :D :D
cooler 03-02-2007, 08:21 PM i dont understand that guy (TH). He stand to potentially gain a cushy job and celebrity status upon retirement from a pro career but it seem he throwing that away in exchange for a spat with pbsi over some small appearance fee at papua. If he do plan to exit pbsi, he is sure going out with a bang!
Hahah... So far Taufik said that he is not going "unless something happen" it means that there is chance but most likely his is not going.
wizzy 03-02-2007, 11:23 PM I am sure as well that he is not going to AE.
No news from Indo about it...
So, it just PBSI confirmed to AE organiser that they don't have the news so they can blame on TH if he is not playing.
ctjcad 03-03-2007, 02:36 AM ...and it's better to just scratch off his name for the upcoming AE...Reading the last report, looks like nothing has changed and Taufik is not budging at all...PBSI has given a green light for him to go but Taufik still stands steadfast on his decision.. :p
So, for the benefit of everyone involved, i hope the AE organizer can just move on and re-do the MS draw...No Taufik, and let's just move on..*sigh*:p :o :(
tstan85 03-04-2007, 05:14 PM I hope he is playing, as i am going to birmingham for AE for my first time, and i want to watch a really high standard game. :p

CLELY 03-05-2007, 12:51 AM Really a sensational seeker! Still uncertainty about TH's participation until INA contingent arrives at Birmingham. PBSI denies what TH wants, last minute decision depends on TH's mind. Who is the decision maker actually? PBSI or TH? Undoubtedly one TH is so powerful in this case although his job is prof.athlete, but supported by his father in-law?!
Well which is bigger? Local Olympic Comittee or PBSI? Whoever is bigger is the loudest.
tjl_vanguard 03-05-2007, 02:11 AM Hahah... So far Taufik said that he is not going "unless something happen" it means that there is chance but most likely his is not going.
haha i think he just wanna create a special mood for him to win the AE (as in making a big story about his withdrawal and in the last minute before tourney begins he suddenly appear with his racket in his hand and beat everybody else to win) and it'll be a damn big sensational news....
BUT....
just wait till it backfires some day... :D:D:D:D:D:p
utopia_imminent 03-05-2007, 02:30 AM that's some idea! if he wins, he looks like a hero. and if he loses, ppl would understand that he had probs to deal with and his mind wasn't in the right place.
Krisna 03-05-2007, 03:58 AM It is confirmed that Taufik will not go to AE. I have checked with various PBSI sources. He won't budge even after many many many people try to influence him to change his mind. .....He wasn't on the flight that carried the whole team. :( :crying:

In the last minute he will board a phased out concorde en route to england. Then Hafiz will be in a great shock that he couldn't believe what he is seeing. In front of him was TH. Last 5 mins. to go till walk over. Unfortunately for Hafiz, he will have to face TH to win the match...
or yet...
I really don't know. I think I'm gonna puke.
tjl_vanguard 03-05-2007, 11:55 PM imagine Hafiz is sleeping in his comfortable hotel room when Wong Tat Meng called him "Wake up wake up Taufik is here!!! Get ready to fight!!"

Err, being scared is not in Hafiz's nature. Committing irregular mistakes, losing consistency, and playing too many fancy shots are his weaknesses.
About half of Hafiz's defeats are due to these. The other half was because the opponents were better, but he was never scared of them.
But for the 1st 2 SS tournaments so far, he has played decently.

volcom 03-06-2007, 03:53 AM "I’m so disappointed with my loss today but I'm happy with the fans supporting me in the stadium - it really makes it exciting. Lin Dan played well today and I made some mistakes especially in second set. Malaysian Open is not what I want, in fact I’m targeting to be ranked world number 1 and to be ALL ENGLAND Champion. It’s still missing from my collection as I won the Olympic, World Championships and Asian Games"
phaarix 03-06-2007, 04:00 AM It's a shame... he always has next year but if he retires after Olympics like he said then it will be his last chance! I guess if anything good comes out of it (apart from Hafiz getting a free ticket into the next round :D), it's that next years AE will be very exciting :).
volcom 03-06-2007, 04:00 AM This kind of work ethic is just ridiculous evern for the MO
"After the Asia games, I have trained only for a week. But I think that I will still be up to the challenge against Lin Dan. But it will be tough."
In other words I am better...
"“He has the better record over me but I have beaten him in all the major tournaments. He is the world number one but I have held that position before. He is the world champion and I have won the world title before.”
Bad eggs
Taufik said that he preferred to play against top Dane Peter Gade-Christensen or Chong Wei.
“They are friendly players. They give their best on court and maintain a good relationship off-court,” he said.

Indeed, he knows he cannot beat top so many matches consecutively with his fitness.

Who are you to tell him who he should prefer to play? LCW said the same thing in an interview during the WC last year (that he would rather play PG than LD). I love how you and all the other anti-Taufik people on this forum twist his words. He was simply stating why it would be a close and tough match. This blatant Taufik bashing really annoys me. There are so very few threads it doesn't come up in...
Edit: You're right about Nelson though :o, it is great here :D. Sorry if my post came across wrong, I'm just annoyed right now at the amount of anti-THness.
Reported in our major paper, The Straits Times, today:
Taufik listed in draw, despite reports of row with officials
"Meanwhile the organisers (of AE) expect Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat to play despite media reports that he has withdrawn.
The Indonesian star is due to meet Malaysia's Hafiz Hashim in the first round at the National Indoor Arena when the tournament begins today.
Reports claimed he had pulled out after a row with his national association.
But tournament director Darren Parks told BBC Sport: "To date, we have had no withdrawal from Taufik.
"After seeing the news reports we contacted the Indonesian Badminton Association for confirmation, but they came back and said 'We don't know why you are asking'.
"So, officially, Taufik is still in the tournament." :)
