Kien Keat-Boog Heong gives Malaysia first All-England doubles title in 25 years

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian hotshots Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong gave an awesome display to end Malaysia’s 25-year wait for a men’s doubles title in the All-England badminton championships at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham here Sunday.
The duo, who hardly showed any nerves in their first outing as a pair in the All-England, tore apart world champions and top seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China 21-15, 21-18 in a 38-minute battle.
And as soon as they had won, 21-year-old Kien Keat jumped for joy and rolled over in sheer delight, while national coach Rexy Mainaky ran onto the court and hugged 20-year-old debutant Boon Heong.
Kien Keat and Boon Heong's victory was the perfect birthday gift for Rexy, who turned 39 on March 9.
In fact, Kien Keat, who had crashed out in the early rounds of the All-England with different partners over the last three years, will go bald, as he had promised to do if he won the title.
The pair's superb win Sunday ended Malaysia’s agonising 25-year wait for the title, which was last won by the Sidek brothers – Jalani and Razif -- in 1982.
And what makes the All-England victory sweeter for the Malaysians was that they did not drop a single game in the competition.
There was never a doubt that Kien Keat-Boon Heong were in with a shot after they began the match with a superb attacking display in the first game to take an 8-6 lead.
The Chinese, who had lost to the Malaysians in the quarter-finals of the Asian Games in December, found it hard to keep pace with their speedy opponents, who were superior in all departments.
The Chinese pair lost tamely in the first game, but the second game saw them putting up a better fight.
It was a ding-dong battle from the start of the second game as the lead was exchanged several times.
The Chinese kept up the pressure throughout but the Malaysian "bravehearts" did not give in and held on to clinch victory.
Jalani Sidek, who last won the title with brother Razif, said the Malaysians won because of their superior tactical game.
"I knew this pair would win the title for us. The Chinese were good in attacking too but our Malaysians were superb in both attacking and tactical play. "Kien Keat played brilliantly and Boon Heong certainly did not show his inexperience at all playing in his first All-England," said Jalani.

excellent results by KKK/TBH. it looks like Rexy has created a top pair. and i think we can pretty safely consider them one of the best MD pair in the world now. earlier on, there were skepticism whether they will pull a "Hafiz", but now they have showed that they can consistently stop as well as winning major tournaments.

and hopefully this will boost the moral of the Malaysian team as a whole. we look forward to more and better badminton in the future.

Young Pair End Malaysia's 25-Year Wait For All England Men's Doubles Title

From Jaiarajo Letchumanan http://www.bernama.com.my/bernama/v3/images/cam.gif (javascript:void(0);)

BIRMINGHAM, March 11 (Bernama) -- Doha Asian Games gold medallists Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong put up a smashing performance to end the country's 25-year wait for the All England men's doubles title after beating China's top seeds Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena here today.

The new kids on the block, playing together for only about five months now, emulated the success of brothers Razif-Jalani Sidek who were the last Malaysians to win the title back in 1982 after beating William Gillard/Dan Travers of Scotland.

Despite taking the first game with relative ease, the duo gave coach Rexy Mainaky, the Malaysian camp and the few hundred Malaysian fans present some anxious moments in the second game when the Chinese pair began to stamp their authority on the match, largely due to numerous unforced errors by the duo, especially Kien Keat who looked very tense.

The second game was in fact 17-16 in favour of the Chinese before the Malaysian pair regrouped to walk out winners and pocket the USD14,400 (RM50,400) prize money on offer.

The tears of emotion rolling down his cheeks during the prize presentation best reflected the feelings of Kien Keat, who has played at the championship three times before with former partner Chan Chong Ming.

"This title means the world to me after three earlier failures. This one's for the Malaysian fans who had given us tremendous support throughout the competition and our coach. We had beaten the Chinese pair at the Doha Asian Games and were optimistic of repeating that feat today.

"However, the second game saw the Chinese coming at us in full force but thank God we managed to steady ourselves," said Kien Keat after the prize presentation ceremony.

It was the second title of the year for the duo who had won the Malaysian Open in January.

Their win also completes an accomplishment of having beaten the world's top two pairs in the competition as they had overcome second seeds Jens Eriksen/Martin Lungaard of Denmark in the semi-final yesterday.

"We did not have any specific game plan but we were ready to go into the attack right from the start as the Chinese pair also play a similar game like us. We knew that the team that made the less mistake would win," said Boon Heong.

Winning the title is a breath of fresh air for Malaysian badminton as a whole, especially after all the others had failed to surpass the semi-finals.

Champs’ dads knew duo would triumph in England

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has congratulated Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong for bringing home the All-England men’s doubles title after 25 years.
An aide said the Prime Minister called the pair soon after the match played in Birmingham, England, was over.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said said the pair’s triumph was exciting “ because the players are not ranked and are newly-paired.”
Razif Sidek, who with his brother Jailani were the last Malaysians to win the title 25 years ago, said: “I have waited for this moment for too long. This is one record that I am happy to have broken.”
Tan’s father Yoon Meng said the family had been quietly confident that the pair would win.
“It is like a dream,” he said of the victory. Koo’s father, Chiew Wah, said: “I feel very happy, and I expected them to win because of the way they played.”

congrats to KKK/TBH & their super coach Rexy!!! It was past midnight when I was watching the streamed broadcast live...it was so exciting! The pace of the game was soooo incredibly fast! The massive jump smashes left me in awe and the way they yelled at the top of their lungs each time they smashed the shuttle added to the excitement.
What makes KKK/TBH's feat more amazing is that they didn't drop a single game throughout the tournament and it was TBH's first All England. The second set was very rivetting but i'm glad the Malaysians held their ground against Cai and Fu.

Now it's time for KKK to go bald!!! YAY

Badminton/All England Championships: Carve their names with pride

12 Mar 2007
K.M. Boopathy (boopathy@nst.com.my)

KOO Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong yet again demonstrated why they are the world’s most exciting young pair when they beat China’s world champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun to end Malaysia’s 25-year wait for an All England men’s doubles title at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham yesterday.

And the Malaysia pair did it in dazzling style winning 21-15, 21-18 in a gripping 39 minutes.

"It was such an important title for us. It is definitely our first major victory and more meaningful than the Asian Games gold," said a delighted Kien Keat.

"It has been 25 years since the previous victory and we are proud of the feat." Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi called Khoo Kien Keat immediately after the match to offer his congratulations to the pair.

The pair’s staggering success rate now stands at three titles in five tournaments since Kien Keat, 22, and Boon Heong, 20, competed in the Japan Open last October.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong announced their arrival on the world stage when they ended Malaysia’s 36-year-wait for an Asian Games badminton gold in Doha last December.

National men’s doubles coach Rexy Mainaky, after the painful episode of seeing last year’s All England title snatched by Denmark’s Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen despite having three pairs in the semi-finals, had badly wanted his players win it this year.

And this they did.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong rose to the occasion to deny Haifeng-Cai Yun their second crown after having won the title in 2005.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong started cautiously but once they settled in, there was no stopping the Malaysians with Kien Keat dominant at the baseline, while Boon Heong’s superb netplay earned vital points.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong wrapped up the first game 21-15 but, as is always the case, they started getting fancy with their strokes which nearly cost them the second game.

However, realising that fancy play was not helping them, they reverted to their attacking game and put the pressure on the World No 1 pair who started losing their grip. Kien Keat, after securing match point at 20-18, could not help himself and did a quick jig which signalled the Malaysians pairs’ confidence which they displayed by winning the vital point, the game and the title just minutes later, much to the relief of the Malaysian bench and supporters.

"Our strategy was to play fast as Haifeng-Cai Yun are quicker on court and we needed to outdo them in this area," said Kien Keat.

"I didn’t feel the pressure playing the final but I am feeling it now as I must shave my head bald. That was the bet I took with my teammates if I win but I don’t know if I will do or not."

"Boon Heong played well today (yesterday) and our hope is that we can continue playing like this and win more major titles."

Rexy, who turned 39 on Friday, said that the victory is not just because of his their abilities but also the duo’s discipline and their humbleness despite their new found fame.

"Firstly, I would like to thank god for helping Kien Keat-Boon Heong achieve this feat. My commitment was to make them realise that arrogance is not the way of champions but being humble," said Rexy.

"God has answered our prayers and we now have two players who are not just good but also learning fast how to cope with fame without being cocky.

"I’m really happy that I received this belated birthday present and the win was not a fluke."

Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman also conveyed her congratulations to the top young pair and hopes their victory will rub off on other Malaysian athletes.

"It’s good that this young pair is coming up as Malaysian sport before this was all about Nicol David and the bowlers," said Azalina.

"Their goal now should be the Olympic gold medal next year in China."

In the men’s singles played earlier, China’s World No 1 Lin Dan beat compatriot Chen Yu 21-13, 21-12 in 32 minutes to seal his third straight All England singles title.

Results — (All finals) Men’s singles: Lin Dan (Chn) bt Chen Yu (Chn) 21-13, 21-12.

Doubles: Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong (Mas) bt Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun (Chn) 21-15, 21-18.

Women’s singles: Xie Xingfang (Chn) bt Pi Hongyan (Fra) 21-6, 21-13.

Doubles: Wei Yili-Zhang Yawen (Chn) bt Yang Wei-Zhang Jiewen (Chn) 21-16, 8-21, 24-22.

Mixed doubles: Zheng Bo-Gao Ling (Chn) bt Anthony Clark-Donna Kellogg (Eng) 16-21, 21-18, 21-14.

Now KKK/TBH have beaten 6 out of the Top-10 MD pairs (CY/FHF, JE/MLH, MK/HS, AC/RB, LH/AYC, TG/CW) at international meets. They haven't faced the other 4 pairs yet (JJS/LYD, CTF/LWW [wonder whether the veteran pair has beaten them during the training at home], RS/EH, Njoto/Wiratama).

On the other hand, they were defeated in their first encounter with a Korean pair - LJJ/HJM (at KO). Apart from the absence of Rexy and Koreans' homeground advantage, I wonder if Koreans will become their nemesis in the future?

all my respects goes to KKK/TBH.

my friends and i got the seat on the third row....so close to the court, can hear the players screaming and shouting....so cool. but the steward kept giving us warning not to take photos. definitely our faces will appear in TV. (saw ourselves in the big screen a few times as we shouted 'malaysia boleh' so loudly until we silenced the entire block of chinese fans who sat beside us. we are only 14 ppl but our voices were way louder than a 50++ chinese fans). even our shouting attracted the malaysian photographer who purposely asked us to pose for photos. thrill man!!!

KKK was very friendly to us...we had a nice chat with him during his medal walk-round. he even spent some time to sign all our tickets. this was some of the conversations...

my friends: later we went to Chinatown to eat together ah...
KKK: no problem...

TBH seem to be a bit shy. he walked away quickly.

to be honest...the chant 'malaysia boleh' is more forceful, powerful and more elegant than the chant 'zong gou dui jia you' which is very monotonous and dull. No offense....this was told personally by a few british fans who sat in front of us.

The winning characteristic of KKK/TBH is that they are mentally tough; they have no fear. Or maybe they are just too young to know fear yet.

Just watch the semifinal with JE/MLH. The Danes are supposed to be the masters of psychology. But KKK/TBH won big in the psychological aspect, especially against MLH.

Just like to see how KKK would look like with his bald head. If he is still bald when he comes down to Singapore for the Aviva Open, I would like to have a pic taken with him. I already had one with him and his lady partner during the Melbourne Commonwealth Games last March! :D

Kien Keat-Boon Heong Moved By Prime Minister's Support

From Jaiarajo Letchumanan

BIRMINGHAM, March 12 (Bernama) -- The All- England men's doubles champions Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong received a pleasant surprise when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi called them by telephone to congratulate the Malaysian duo on their victory after the match.

They had also received a similar call from Youth and Sports minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said.

"We were caught by surprise when told that the Prime Minister was on the line and wanted to speak to us. I thanked the Prime Minister for his personal support and for taking the time to call us," said Kien Keat.

He added that the call came about 20 minutes after the match had ended last night.

Doubles Victory Shows M'sians Can Rank Among The Best, Says Abdullah

PUTRAJAYA, March 12 (Bernama) -- The spirit of "Malaysia Boleh" shown by the Malaysian team who won the All-England men's doubles title in Birmingham yesterday indicated that Malaysia and Malaysians could rank among the best in the world, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Monday.

The prime minister said the Malaysians' spirit, faith and values would determine whether Malaysia and Malaysians could achieve the desired position.

Abdullah on behalf of the Malaysians congratulated Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong for winning the title.

"We got back what we lost 25 years ago," he said in his acceptance speech after being conferred the Napoleon Hill Foundation Global Leadership Award at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, here.

Abdullah said he watched the match and described it as a very exciting moment.

"I am happy they have won. I have tried to call them. Surprisingly, the prime minister could not get in touch with them," he said in jest.

The duo defeated world champions and top seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China in the final match 21-15, 21-18 for the title at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

Razif and Jalani Sidek were the last Malaysian pair to secure the title in 1982.

JO 2nd round - MAS won (21-12, 14-21, 21-17)
Asiad team SF - KOR won (21-14, 23-21)
Asiad MD Round of 16 - MAS won (21-18, 21-14)
KO SF - KOR won (21-10, 21-18)

That means LJJ/HJM is the only pair in the world who has beaten KKK/TBH twice to date.

I am so happy and don't know how to express the feelings by seeing Malaysian Doubles winning the All England title.

Good Luck to them for the forth coming tournaments and be mentally prepared.Rexy(coach) done his best and hats off to him.

I hope after this, men's single could show some suprises as the doubles. All it depends on their mental strength.

Anyways good luck to all of them.

Yeah, and the Koreans and TG/CW are the only ones so far that have been able to beat Koo/Tan in international competitions.

BAM, Rexy and their respective families/colse friends must help them realise their full potential. Staying humble and not letting achievements go to their head will make them great champions in the years to come.

the boys really did us proud :). I was watching this on TV and my gf came in to ask me what I was screaming so much for!

anyway I recorded it all and I plan on releasing it as a torrent once I get it reencoded which should take 2 days I hope (using x264 so much slower than xvid but quality should be better) :).

Thanks so much, looking forward to download this torrent. Please post it here when it is done :)

>>Even PM said it an exiting games..hah:D

Just goes on to show how little Malaysians actually win. If Hu Jintao does that everytime a Chinese wins something, where will he find the time to run the country?

Ended up using Xvid instead so slightly larger file than X264 to maintain a reasonable quality.

Exactly. Malaysia is a relatively small country both in terms of its overall strength and its achievement in sports. I don't see any problem that they cherish and celebrate every single achievement at the world-class level.

Those who are/were living in the Southeast Asia region could probably recall how Brunei celebrated the first medal (Bronze medal some more, if I'm not wrong) they won at the SEA Games back in 1980s.

I have the pair will be HUMBLE ALWAYS and DON'T UNDERESTIMATE future opponents! Work hard! Also, a BIG THANK YOU to REXY! He was the backbone all the way and roots to winning this match.

Lets not forget our other pairs, they played well but also must never underestimate the opponents or play fancy shots. I see a future in our doubles team, not only KKK/TBH shouldering the responsibility but also the rest of the teams!

Hahaha...this is damn funny...:D:D:D This copyright better owns by HH only.Dont think anyone wanna steal this copyright from him.
I would also like to congrats our very own superb and powerful pair (KKK/TBH) for what they have done yesterday. Credits should also go to Rexy for making Malaysia doubles be at the top of the world again. It has been long time since we last produced a pair that can make ppl scared even before meeting them in the court.
They are now just like Lin Dan, being the target to be beaten in all upcoming Opens. I wonder those pairs out there will now only aim to beat them and forget about winning the championship. Hopefully those pairs will not use this formula (Win over KKK/TBH = Win the championship). This formula is WRONG!!!! Hahaha....:D:D:D:D

HAHAHAHA, when did Koo Kien Keat said this in New Strait Times, i just realised .....

"Our strategy was to play fast as Haifeng-Cai Yun are quicker on court and we needed to outdo them in this area," said Kien Keat.

"I didn’t feel the pressure playing the final but I am feeling it now as I must shave my head bald. That was the bet I took with my teammates if I win but I don’t know if I will do or not."

so he still considering, someone is gonna to take back his words :D :D :D :D :D

Kien Keat: Let the good times roll in Swiss Open

PETALING JAYA: One made a vow to go bald if they won the All-England title while the other said that he feared no one in setting out to achieve the feat.
Now that Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong have lifted the prestigious title, both have vowed to keep the good times rolling for Malaysian badminton as they set out to challenge for another title – the Swiss Open.
They are the fifth-eighth seeds for the fourth leg of the Super Series tournament which begins today in Basel with the qualifying tournament.
“The win is not just for us. It is for everyone, especially our coaches (Rexy Mainaky, Chang Kim Wai and Pang Cheh Chang),” said Kien Keat, who shares the same birthday as Boon Heong on Sept 18.
“Boon Heong and I do so well because we think alike. We know our strength and try to complement each other. Everything just works well for us.”
The All-England was their third title in four tournaments since teaming up in October.
Kien Keat said that winning the All-England title had whetted their appetite for more honours.
“We have been on a roll and we do not want it to end. Our opponents will not take us lightly anymore. It will be more challenging but we have set our sights on winning the next big one – the world title,” he said.
The 20-year-old Boon Heong, who does not get intimidated by his opponents despite his inexperience, was still savouring the win.
“I did not even think of the title when I arrived in Birmingham. The plan was to take one match at a time. Now we are the champions. It is a great feeling.”
Despite the outstanding achievements over the last five months, Boon Heong considers themselves still as the underdogs.
“There is still so much to improve on and to learn. It is important for both us not be influenced by what others say. If we can continue to be strong in the heart, we will go far. For now, we want to stay focused in our preparation for the world championships,” he added.
In the Swiss Open, Kien Keat-Boon Heong are expected to meet top seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China in the quarter-finals. If they advance, they will face either South Koreans Jung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae or the Indonesian-American combination of Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan. Meanwhile, Wong Choong Hann, who failed to make it to the main draw of the All-England, will be in action today in the Swiss Open qualifying rounds.

I hope they keep their head low and be prepared well cause right now everyone wanna beat them.

MD Final

CY/FHF looked like they were lacking confidence to beat the MAS pair. Fu in particular looked sluugish and unwiling to take the initiative in the rally, and Cai Yun was wary about comitting at the net. KKK/TBH blew them off the court and although the second game was closer the CHN pair looked very flat.

just 1 word to said... you 2 is best!!!!
Malaysia boleh.....

KKK/TBH has to fight even more if they want to win Swiss Open. If the advance to the quarter final, they will meet CaiYun/Fu Haifeng again, if they win they might face the koreans / TonyCandra combination. The match is not going to be easy, but i hope they remind themselves to take one match at the time...

Guys,

Please do not encourage both of them to shave bald.

IF NOTHING IS BROKEN, DON"T FIX IT.

Going bald MIGHT make them feel, UNATTRACTIVE/ NOT PLEASANT LOOKING. Which hence might effect their confidence.

At such high level of competition, 1% of changes in their attitude/skill/CONFIDENCE will effect their games.

Please do not change anything at all.. Some people might want them to shave, but what's the point!!!

LET THEM BE and PLEASE DON"T SHAVE YOUR HEAD!!!!

I know how it feels like to go bald, i myself is losing hair and this is severely effecting my confident level

BAM, for once, will you be wise enough to let him stay.. If you don't I'll regard you as one of the dumbest association in da world (no offence)......

Don't let history repeat itself.. We'll pray....

Lets all look forward to the Swiss Open. Its going to be exhausting playing back to back tournaments. I've not given up hopes in our Malaysian players, I think they can be formidable if train up well and instill the fighting spirit. Most of all, they must concentrate in their game.

Malaysians are so happy about KKK/TBH win until they forget one thing: Besides KKK/TBH the rest had faired miserably! If Thomas cup were to be held now Malaysia will lose no doubt about it.

I think he wants to outdo MS coach of Hafiz, Misbun Sidek, during his prime as Malaysia's most controverisial player with his varied hairstyles, probably the most famous of which is his Mohawk spread or Mohican haircut dyed in brilliant colours!

But KKK's intended bald or skin head, I think, will fall short of Misbun's fiery haircut, unless KKK adds something outlandish. :D

KKK's hair stylist is quite creative so I wouldn't worry.May be able to create a new kind of bald look.

kkk could go bald but still make it his own style. maybe he could shave maori (u kno...new zealand natives) style patterns into his hair...that would look cool

JaCk™
03-16-2007, 06:26 AM
yes, dont just go bald.. add some styles to baldness too.. haha.. eg: dye some hair red and keep them. the remaining hair can be shaved. but the easiesy way is to get totally bald! :)
