so today i went to go play some badminton, and i was just warming up with clears and smashes, then after this one smash, my racket felt really weird and i looked at it and it broke at the bottom to the right (or left depending on how you look at it). here are some pictures of it.

So any ideas as to what might've happened? And that also forces me to buy a new racket instead of waiting til i go to Hong Kong in december as i planned. I'm looking for a Stiff and Head Heavy racket, so basically a good power racket. Price range is $200 give or take ten dollars in Canada. I would also like to buy from a store and not online.

by looking at the condition of the racquet, might have been damaged from the previous clash or mishit.
if not it's manufacturing defect.
If you're in Toronto and looking for Yonex, try Maxsports, which is located downtown.

within that price range, you can take a look at these. they range from sorta head heavy to head heavy (sry if im wrong with the order, havnt played with any of these rackets except the MP99)
MP99
MP100
Ti10 (new one)
AT800 OF
AT700
or a Cab 20 or 21
this is all referencing from mjstrings.ca
looking at other stores like maxsports or even sportchek, AT500 is within those requirements.

AT500 does look like a possible choice for me.... how about suggestions from other brands such as SOTX?... btw, thanks for all the input already

Could also due to bad string job.

You can purchase SOTX racquets at http://www.winningbadminton.com (http://www.winningbadminton.com/). They are located in Scarborough (Midland and Sheppard).
I purchased a Woven 11 from them for about $180 (CAD) back in September 2006. If you read the forums, the Woven 11 is an absolute power racquet. Myself personally, I find it a demanding racquet. However, I have not been disappointed with my purchase. It is one of the hardest hitting racquets I have ever tried (that and a Victor Power Waves 11).
I believe they have some Woven 7s as well ($149 CAD according to their site). I've never used it myself, but it's suppose to play similar to the Woven 11.
Good luck. Sorry to hear about the broken racquet.

I had this happen twice. the stress of the stringing is one problem. It was done incorrectly, and after a thousandth time of smashes; the stress of it collapses the frame.
The other is dropping it on the floor and hitting your partner's racket too many times.

the way the pictures look the strings are too tightly strung, they are still maintaining the frame of the racket, otherwise it would have broken apart.

it wasn't strung too high, only about 24 lbs

24lbs is still pretty high isn't it? if i;m not mistaken AT500s are only take 26lbs? i presonally string my AT500 at 24 lbs too lol

actually, AT500s can take much more than 26lbs...ive had mine strung to 28 and its perfectly fine, some people string beyond 30 and their racquets still hold up =)

thanks for the correction, but beyond 30lbs? must feel like a wooden board :p

Hey,.... it happens to me also.
and guess what, the shape of the broken frame is similar.
only mine makes 90 degree, even worse.
In my case, a week before, I had a clash and the frame was crack.
I keep continue playing and mishit the bird, unfortunately my tension was 29-27lbs (AT700). so the frame couldn't hold the tension.
I was regret as my shop said I shouldn't keep playing, I should have taken the racket and got it fix (cut the string and put some glue).
:( :( :(

hehe..as i know,in indo, the stores doesnt give u any warranty if the racket is broken.Only valid if it's broken when u string the racket for the first time in the store where u bought it.Else than that,no other warranties. It's just weird that they told u to put some glue on it to repair it.A very old method, yet not really usefull. It's just too bad,if incase there's a defect take place. In most of countries, like for example china,US,europe, they have 3 months guarantee,to replace a defect racket.

Probably it was caused by its decreased durability, results from mishits or clashes(in doubles),n the last simple mishit broke it down.My last racket was also broken because of it.

My bonny DJ serie, tension limit upto 30lbs,strung it at 28 lbs, with NBG95.Maybe the tension that time is around 24-25lbs.Before it was broken, there's a light crack line..and it was broken when i return a smash. Before that,it was clashed for few times during double games.

Smichz you are wrong.
It depends on the store, my regular store gives warranty for misshit and string under yonex tension. However, the frame must be in mint condition.
Not basically glue, I don't know it just very hard to explain.

I know what u mean..string under yonex tension which means it's below the suggested tension. In most case,3U is lower than 25lbs,and 4U is lower than 24lbs.Wow..ur store gives u warranty for mishits as well:eek:?Damn...that dont happend very often in somewhere else.
I dont know the real situation down in indo, but i was once went to a store n ask about the warranty condition,n he said,no warranty.Only if it's broken at the first time it's strung,in the same place u bought it.Since they dont wanna be responsible if incase it's the other stringer's fault to break it.

I think depending on the store.
The store that I normally buy is some kind like wholesaler store. he sells to many store in Indonesia.
I believe he got good connection with yonex.
Even if I string at tension 27-29lbs and then break the frame, he will give replacement. Again, the frame must be in mint condition.

ouch~ looks like pervious clashes finally took it's toll! Each clash = lots of micro fractures in the carbon/graphite! It's all a matter of time! I'm sure it's lived and fought many great battles :)
On a side note, that's a VERY common breaking spot! I believe it's also the breaking site of some factory defective Yonex AT900T that were never clashed upon a smash!
