IndoAmerican 03-25-2007, 10:55 PM is raji rah still playing? not sure how to spell his name
My understanding is that, unfortunately, Raju Rai will not be able to partcipate this year. I believe he is recovering from some kind of knee injury... He is really a good player... Hope he could return next year.
Kwun... I didn't realize there is already this thread:

Feel free to merge these two. Sorry...

Looking quickly at the draws, i'm just going to give my predictions on who will be the Semifinalists in each events. Some of these players & pairs have equal chances of reaching the Finals(based on what i've seen and as i haven't seen the others play before. Of course with injuries and/or last minute pull-outs not taken into consideration):
MS - Eric Go or Howard Bach vs. A. Todt or N. Jinadasa(Upper half)
A. Setiadi vs. B. Malaythong(Lower half)
WS - Eva Lee or L. Todt vs. Johanna Lee(Upper half)
Lili Zhou vs. J. Subandhi(Lower half)
MD - B.Malaythong & H. Bach vs. S. Wong & J. Shu(Upper half)
H. Shu & S. Fujinami or C. Lun/S. Jonatan vs. A. Setiadi/B. Chen vs. A. Todt & N. Jinadasa(Lower half)
WD - M. Mangkalakiri & E. Lee vs. D. Ng & Lili Zhou(Upper half)
Panita & Vimla Phongasavithas vs. L. Todt & A. De Pauw or J. Lee & G. Peng(Lower half)
XD - Eva Lee & H. Bach vs. A. De Pauw & A. Setiadi(Upper half)
L. Zhou & T. Shear vs. G. Peng & N. Jinadasa or M. Mangkalakiri & B. Malaythong(Lower half)
Should be lots of fun and quite entertaining.

I am really glad to see so many Jr Players stepping up to the plate this year to participate in this year Adult National. That is why you guys can see the 64 draw which has never happened in the prior years.

Obviously these young lads are there for the experience and not expecting to win and hopefully build their confidence. In any case, it is a good sign that there are more participations in the national tournament year after year. I also suspect that once the foreign players gain their US residence/citizen status there will be even more in the coming years...and more interesting and challenging... one way to boost this sport in USA... go USA Badminton!

..and they're definitely the future:cool:..although, i wonder if those BYE slots will be somewhat filled in-as i see there are abt 24 slots open, a bit less than 1/3 of competition;) ..Btw, the 64 draw only applies to the MS event whilst there are only 16 pairs in the WD event(could be more, IMO)..

Couldn't agree with you more... There must be something that could be done to promote Badminton in the Women's section.

harimau 03-27-2007, 08:19 PM Is Phillip Chew one of them (MD)? There is an under-13 player by this name from OCBC...
Yup Phillip Chew is playing and so his Double Partner, Andrew Susanto. They just play to gain experience ..... There is also Cee Ketpura who is only 14 years of age. But dont be mislead by their age ....some of them are really good already even at young age....
dont judge the book by its cover ....
IndoAmerican 03-27-2007, 10:14 PM Is Phillip Chew one of them (MD)? There is an under-13 player by this name from OCBC...
Phillip and his partner are actually Under-15 category this year. They're growing up very fast before our own eyes... so, yes.. these are perhaps the future generations of US players. So don't blink!

http://www.usabadminton.org/USAB_rankings-MS.html
http://www.usabadminton.org/USAB_rankings-WS.html
(and my personal assessment)
For comparisons, here are some past results:
PAW Swiss Open: http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41522&page=6
PAW Korea Open, http://www.badmintoncentral.com/foru...ad.php?t=40169 (http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40169)
Unlike the Super Series where only one round is played per day, subsequent rounds will be played on the same day. In this tournament we will have to pick our guesses who will be the winners for the Saturday and Sunday games.
Remember:
1)The Scoring Points beside each fixture represent the points you score if the corresponding player wins.
2)You are only limited to 21 picks throughout the whole tournament.
Please follow this format for Your Picks:
PAW1: BACH over FOGARTY
PAW2: SHU over JONATAN
PAW3: YEH over DUMITRIU
PAW4: EVA LEE over PRISCILLA LUN
Good luck and have fun playing!

http://tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draw.aspx?id=13861&draw=2
You will have a chance to have your pick for Saturday's round after Friday's games are done.
BornReady 03-28-2007, 05:39 PM Ok, I play...
PAW1: QIN over GUNATILEKA
PAW2: YEH over TODD
PAW3: ZHONG over YEH
BornReady 03-28-2007, 05:47 PM US badminton seems pretty monoculture compared with CDN badminton.
Although I guess the best players in the world represent that culture, sooooo...
In my observation, in the US, the majority of the badminton players are Asian decent (i.e. Chinese, Malay, Indonesian, India, Thai, Korea, Vietnam, etc). The causians and blacks do play badminton but not as much as the Asians.
If what you mean by mono-cultural is Asian then you are correct. The question is whether badminton is more appropriate for Asians? (such as in basketball which is more appropriate for tall people and since the caucasians and blacks are taller than most Asians, therefore Basketball is more appropriate for the caucasians and blacks)
IndoAmerican 03-29-2007, 01:09 AM Sorry, but doesn't look like we would be able to conduct PAW for US Adult National effectively. I think it would be too difficult to pick the winners since subsequent games are played within the same day starting on Friday 9AM.
Please refer to the games schedules:

Thanks!
IndoAmerican 03-30-2007, 09:07 AM Well, This is Day 1...
Does anyone know as to why they had a redraw of the MS event?

a potential clash between two BC members in the WS 2nd round! Maggie if defeating Lee will face Ruth! who are we to cheer for?!
Viper2005 03-30-2007, 11:43 AM I don't think that will happen...
J. Lee was the US Open finalist last year. She is also a coach at SGVBC. Ex-Korean national player.
So, don't think Maggie has a chance.:D
I'll try to take some photos this weekend and post on BC.
Any special requests? Maybe pictures of Howard, Eric, ......Singles, Doubles, Mixed?

Also, I would like to see an upset in WD - DePaw/Todd over Peng/Lee - it a stretch but could happen.
There is also a possibility of upset in MS: Andrew Todd over Zi Wei Qin
And in XD: Subandhi/Shu could potentialy beat Zhou/Shear
It will be an interesting day...
ctjcad 03-31-2007, 11:11 PM ..Saw the Semifinals & consolation rounds of the U.S. Nationals..folks, let me tell you this, there are a lot of young players playing and some of them are getting better & better...I didn't go to see all the matches(only went in late afternoon), but the future is definitely there..
Saw a very entertaining match between P. Mazur and B. Malaythong, which ended in a bit of an upset. Kazur played very well, stable/consistent & didn't make a lot of unforced errors. Bob seemed a bit tired, making quite a few unforced erros, esp. while playing in 3 different matches.
Saw probably the most entertaining match of the day, however it was @ the end, of a XD consolation match. The match went to rubber sets, but it pitted a pair of very young players(OCBC, Thuy HOANG & Marvin LIN) versus a pair of veteran pair( Joy KITZMILLER & Ryan MIGLIN which i would say in their 30s).
Didn't take much pics, but here are a few; guess who's in the 1st pic & too bad he's not playing:p;). However, i did record(my SURPRISE which i mentioned earlier in this thread) some matches for y'all to enjoy. Give me a bit of time to organize and upload them for you guys to enjoy..;) :D  In the meantime, enjoy these:

Tomorrow's Finals lineup should be fun and entertaining. And hopefully i can get to record all of them for y'all to enjoy.;) :)
Btw, kwun, i believe i saw Mr. Wayne Lum with his "weapon", the 1D MK2 or 1D MK3, complete with his tele-lens...;) :D
thanks Chris for the pics!
i see there are one big upset for WS. Eva Lee was beaten by Lee Joo Hyun. LJH will face Lili tomorrow. i am supporting Lili!!
ctjcad 04-01-2007, 12:20 AM ..and btw, for tomorrow's Finals, i'll do my best to capture all the pics(as well as record the matches) and share them with you guys;) ...Oh, looking @ the 5th and 6th pics, you'll notice the pair on the left, those guys indeed lived up to their #2 seed & will be playing against Bob M. and Howard B. in tomorrow's MD Finals..I recall that pair played quite well, but we'll see in tomorrow's Final against the reigning U.S. National MD Champs...
Speaking also of Mr. Piotr Mazur(MS), he also lived up to his #2 seed, as i've never seen him play before..But after seeing him in action tonight, tomorrow's MS Final against Howard B. should be quite interesting..;)
*Btw, for LazyBuddy, cross your fingers i(or anyone else) can get pics of the Yeh twins, tomorrow..I saw them coming in late, dressed with some nice attires, but didn't get a chance to take their pics..;)
Qidong 04-01-2007, 09:09 AM thanks Chris for the pics!
i see there are one big upset for WS. Eva Lee was beaten by Lee Joo Hyun. LJH will face Lili tomorrow. i am supporting Lili!!
If Lee Joo Hyun was an ex-Korean national team player as Viper95 said earlier, then Eva Lee and Lili Zhou should be the underdog instead.
IndoAmerican 04-01-2007, 11:00 AM I was stunned and surprised with the upsets, so....
let me be the first today to make the final outcome predictions:
XD - Eva Lee/Howard Bach bt Mangkalakiri/Malaythong
MS - Howard Bach bt Poitr Mazur
WS - Lili Zhou bt Joo Hyun Lee
MD - Bob Malaythong/Howard Bach bt Nguy/Gunatelaka
WD - Grace Peng/Joo Hyun Lee bt Eva Lee/Malangkakiri
Whoa... I just predicted that Howard Bach would be a tripple crown winner in this tournament!

Wow, none even close! Really shows the different in level... but at the same time, detracts ab it from the spectator benefit, heh.
ctjcad 04-01-2007, 09:16 PM ...well, as expected, all the projected winners came out on top..The XD match was really over in no more than 20 min., i believe..So was the MD match, which only took abt 17-18 min. to end..Personally, the most entertaining match was the MS and the WD..Unfortunately all matches only went 2 sets..Really, like westwood_13 said, the playing level of all the winners is just plain indicative of how big a "gap" there is/are with the others...And yes, Mr. Bach is the triple-crown winner..;) :D
Anyways, here are a few more pics of the Finals day (these are pics of the consolation matches. And were taken when i had some break time, in between & after the Finals matches. As the matches followed each other one after another)..Noticed in one of them, there's Piotr Mazur sitting along his coach?? Sorry, didn't take any pics of the Finalists because i was busy with recording the matches. But here are some pics of the future U.S. Nationals winnershttp://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif..Oh, and wait til you guys see what i have in store for our own LazyBuddy ;) :D

..i have the video & i'm working on it; as a matter of fact all the Finals matches and a few from Saturday's, as we speak err, i meant as i'm typing:p...Btw, Mr. Piotr Mazur reminds me of another Peter, Peter Gade;)..Hope i can upload them soon for you guys..So, hang on;)
ctjcad 04-04-2007, 01:45 AM ..taken by joits..to view the rest of the pics, you guys can go here:

Btw, joits, thanks & nice pics you've got there..;)
talked to Lili today. she was rather mad at herself for losing the finals. she didn't play as well as she wanted to.
look forward to the videos. thanks Chris for the effort making them available.
ctjcad 04-08-2007, 08:27 PM ..phew:p ..for those waiting for these(esp. those who weren't able to watch the matches), just want to say thanks for bearing out and being patient; sorry for having the videos come out quite late...Anyways, here are the raw, unedited & uncensored videos for your watching and listening pleasures (pardon me if y'all will hear some unexpected, unnecessary noises in the background)..The quality isn't the greatest or clearest(640X480 with either a 4 Mbps or 5 Mbps stream), don't know why it does that on Google, but hope y'all don't mind..:p:D;)
Some other ramblings:
* The post-processing which took the most time was the uploading process. Originally I had to download them in their raw .avi format, which took a lot of storage space, and then compressed/encoded them into an MPEG2 format using the HT MPEG Encoder 7.0 software/program. Audio sync-ing was also issue, but with the program, the end results turn out to be pretty good..
Just that the uploading part was, i can say........painful and looong..:p:(
** Note, for those interested in the MPEG file(s), let me know & i can upload them to a storage website for you guys to download..ENJOY!!;):D:)

Yes, thanks for all your hard work Chris!
..and no problem, guys..glad to share them with you all:) ..
A bit off topic: Regarding me hand-helding my camcorder the whole time, initially i started using a tripod on Day 2. But after a few minutes, i gave up and detached the camcorder:p :D . So i spent the whole day and the Finals day recording those matches by hands.:p It was, i would say, a bit "stiff" and hard to move around and control the camera w/ the tripod. Besides, there were people roaming around and crossing in front of the camera and i had to re-adjust my camera everytime. Thankfully i recorded those Finals matches pretty much "clear-free" of obstruction w/people running across the camcorder. I also wanted to record it in somewhat of an angle(didn't get much), rather than straight ahead. Although there were a few other people who had their camcorders parked on a fixed tripod..
Yes, it was definitely tiring!:crying: :( :p My right arm was about to fall off just before the MD match started:p . Fortunately for the MD match, i got a pretty good seating location. For the XD, WS, MS and WD, i had to stand up high to record the footage. I got a pretty decent break after the XD match, as there was a 30 min. non-action period(the organizer followed the schedule time). But after that, every single matches followed each other non-stop, so, of course, no relief in sight:p:D
Plus the camcorder i was using didn't have an OIS(Optical Image Stabilization), thus in some footages there were some pretty rough camera shakes.:p :(
Overall, it was a pretty good experience for me. Learned a lot with that experience..:)
howard bach is the only pro looking playing there. Whole different level of smoothness and power compared to others.
:)..yeah, he was, we could call, "Man among boys & gals":p...If he would've been able to play the ladies events, he probably would've swept all of the events..hehehe;):D:cool:

I mean follow it online. Hahaha. Noticing that Danish players Mathias Boe and Johnny last play in the tournament! They will meet Chandra Kowi and Daniel Guow in first round..

i was at GGBC (where Chandra coaches) and saw Chandra and Daniel practicing together. they look pretty fit but i think it will be a difficult match against Mathias/Johnny.

Yes, Golden Gate BC.. :) Kowi asked me to check the draw.. He wasn't that happy indeed, but promised that he and Daniel will kick their opponent's a**es. Hehehe.. Jia You!
Mathias Boe from Greve BK's MD ranking in Denmark is number 7, while Johnny Hast from Aarhus AB's ranking is something like 400, but 100 in MS.
The tournament starts tomorrow.

Just now Chandra/Daniel won 15-21, 21-17, 21-13. :D They might meet Bob/Howard in QF.
govalley 04-19-2007, 07:16 PM Zhou Mi plays too, I thought she could beat Eva under 10, but it was 21-15, 21-11. Not a good sign for her at Singapore Open
BTW anybody know anything about Boston Open
