View Full Version : CCC League Games Trial #2 - Fri 13th April

03-28-2007, 12:50 PM
Hi all,
Welcome to the return of the CCC League games. It is similar to the first trial in that it is played in a more competitive spirit than the regular social games. As before the games will run in parallel with the regular social. There has been some tweaking in the way the games are arranged to improve play.
The Play
In this trial the number of teams has been reduced to 2, each with 6 players. No handicap will be applied to any of the scores so each game is a straightforward race from 0 to 21 aces with no setting. There will be 18 games in total, arranged to favour pairing of players of similar skill.
Team Scoring
One team point will be accrued for each game won. At the end of the night the aces scored for each team will be summed, the team with the higher number of aces will be awarded one additional team point for every 20 aces difference.
So what are you waiting for?
To register your interest please add your name to the list posted below.
DoublesPlease

Prior to the night I will select the teams using the following:
(1) Divide the interested players into two groups of 6 based on the regular social handicap.
(2) From each group of six players 3 players will be randomly selected. The selected players will form one team, the remaining players will form the other.
DP
DoublesPlease
03-28-2007, 12:51 PM
Assign each player a letter from a through f, the games will be:
Team 1 vs Team 2
a & b vs a & b
a & b vs b & c
b & c vs a & b
a & c vs a & b (x 2)
a & b vs a & c (x 2)
b & c vs c & d
c & d vs b & c
c & d vs d & e
d & e vs c & d
d & e vs e & f
e & f vs d & e
e & f vs e & f
d & f vs e & f (x 2)
e & f vs d & f (x 2)
There are 18 games in total, each player plays 6 games. To summarise the opponents that each player will face, refer below.
Player a meets opponent: ax5, bx4, cx3
Player b meets opponent: ax4, bx3, cx4, dx1
Player c meets opponent: ax3, bx4, cx2, dx2, ex1
Player d meets opponent: bx1, cx2, dx2, ex4, fx3
Player e meets opponent: cx1, dx4, ex3, fx4
Player f meets opponent: dx3, ex4, fx5
If the players in each team are arranged according to skill then games played will be with a partner of similar skill against players of similar skill. I hope that this will balance pairs to increase the quality of the ralleys.

BadFever:
Very sorry that this post has got nothing to do with the trial league.
Good posting chris@ccc. But I must say could substitute 'Melbourne' to also outside of Melbourne > Vic > Australia.... Many clubs contain groups, that if you don't have a contact or the skill its near impossible to join in.
Smashed_1:
It is time for me to take things literally again and resume my status of troublemaker, too much time on his hands on whatever name under the sun.
As DP has recently found out, it's a fair bit of work for organizing games.
Take MSAC social club, it might not be impossible to join in (as in joining in the club), but it would certainly be impossible to join in someone's game and actually play as in partcipating in a game let alone how much they play.
In terms of
a) there are some player who just would want to play with same people due to friends/skill
b) there are some player who want to play all the time
Please take a moment to thank CCC for organizing thorughout the years.
Its a good thing having a regular system@ccc enables anyone from all walks of life to come along and enjoy the play & social-ness, then by adding extra activities can take part in competitive play like the trial comp
Funny that on wednesday nite supper, there was a huge discussion about activity VS focusing on badminton as in "what makes CCC so unique".
Would give you a personal recap on friday, that's if we got time though.

so true hk, easy to get in the door to places, but joining in playing is another story. Unless there's a dedicated organiser newbies can easily get alienated.

tell me more HK!!!. Was it a positive discussion? I think its healthy to have a mixture of social & some more challenging baddy - keeps the interest up. What's the general consensus?
Anyway, back to the topic..lol. Count me in... sounds good DP.. what time's the live draw this round?

First up, thank you for voicing your opinion towards CCC matters.
Tell u more? In summary, it was a very productive discusison let me say. It was point out that what makes CCC unique is the social matters besides playing.
BUT Chris has eye up to his eyeball regarding to a gozallion of thing including (wednesday nite membership, wednesday nite coaching, sunday coaching, friday nite session not to mention things that we are not aware like CCC reunion dinner, CCC@glen waverly dinner anniversary). Hence it is understandable that he would delegate things to people.
So, in all, the query of "can we do this (being trial league or any other function) is going to get a reply of "you organize it!" And as you can see smashed_1, without going into details, the reputation of that person is going to dicate how many people are going to join in.
what time's the live draw this round?
I thought we are organizing teams ourselves, and with 2 weeks that should not be a big problem.

Hi hkhung,
CCC Badminton was founded with an intention: To help more people enjoy playing Badminton.
And, we want to promote more participation in the playing of Badminton in Melbourne.
We have to be aware that many players who come to play at CCC Badminton do not share our CCC's intention.
They come to play at CCC Badminton just because we are available to them.
They play just for their own enjoyment, without thinking what our intention is.
The reason why I injected some Social Events@CCC, such as Suppers, Parties, etc... is really to check who are ones coming to play just because we are available to them, and who are the ones who believe in our main intention.
It is through our discussions at our Social Events that we get to know who is for just Badminton, and who is for our CCC Badminton Intention. :):):)
And, I have heard that some of our players@ccc are suggesting that our Social Events are our 'Family Commitments'. And I like it.
You still haven't registered as a participant for our CCC League Games Trial #2.

I want to ensure that we have balanced teams. We've all played with and against each other enough times that we're comfortable with whoever ends up in the team. For this trial I would like to pick the members randomly.

DP, thanks for clarifying the aboved matter. It's very thoughtful of you wanting to have "balanced team".
When i see them on wednesday nite CATS@CCC, I will ask Kevin+Grace (who came last nite and play with Foo instead of Grace at the end of the nite) to add their names on the trial league.
Actually i been asking him to look at the board cos he been PM me.
Will bug him about reading the board again on wed nite CATS.
Let us think about some people who play in last trial league who we can contact but either
a) no one has tell them of the 2nd trial league
b) they only read friday board
c) did not participate in last trial league
I will PM joseph now.

Hi hkhung,
It's Kelvin+Grace... :):):)
But, I thought that everyone in the 1st Trial has been informed about the 2nd Trial.
And again, I felt that I was so disturbing to everyone last night, Friday 30-Mar-2007... when I have to stop everyone during their warm-ups/games, to inform everyone about the 2nd Trial... plus that, we will be playing on Good Friday, 6-Apr-2007 and the introduction of 2 players, Sherman and Christine, first time to CCC Badminton.
Also, I kept reminding everyone to read our CCC Badminton Sub-Forum, located at: http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=192
Anyway... it's good that you are helping DP to get more participants. :):):)
It will be better if all players@ccc do their own parts, that is to get more involved with the activities that we are planing for them.

I believe that many players@ccc who seldom read our CCC Sub-Forum, namely;
Kulwinder-S
Tony-P
Ashraf-S
kelvin_k
gozzer
Abi-F
LChow
LilyC
etc, etc... could be interested as well.
And... We wonder why LilyC has been absent for so many weeks ???:confused::confused:
We will check with all them when we see them at our Badminton sessions on this Wednesday, 4-Mar-2007, and on this Friday, 6-Mar-2007(our Good Friday Session).
But it's First Come, First Served !!! ;););)
You see that my name has now been removed.
Again, I feel that I should be used with restraint, since we could get more than enough participants for this Trial #2, to be played on 2 courts.
On the other 2 courts, I will attend to the other Social Players@CCC... because someone has to play host@ccc and to look after them and to take care of them.
Those not playing in our CCC League Games will be participating in our regular CCC Handicapped Games.
Cheers... chris@ccc

Yes, I understand you are only joking.:cool::cool:
But some players@ccc could misunderstand, and they might wonder if they could miss out... hence, creating DOUBTS.
Remember: DoublesPlease said... "First Come, First Served"
BTW, kong-19 phoned me this morning... saying that he might be in Melbourne on 13-Apr-2007. He is still "Not Sure".
yschin asked for entry as reserve only... yschin is implying 'No Commitment'.
I know exactly what DoublesPlease is going through when he is organising this event... as I have experienced organising many such events before, with lots of uncertainties everytime.
Hehehe... DoublesPlease even hinted to you... if he could put you for 'active duties'. :):):)
Maybe he is asking for some assistance from you... active duties, and not just suggestions.
But seriously...
Let's ask not what DoublesPlease can do for us, but ask what we can do for DoublesPlease.
When you find time to organise your own event, I will also ask all players@ccc to ask what they can do for you. :):):)

Sorry Chris, I didn't know that my post could cause such inconvenience to DP. Maybe coming from a non-English background, sometimes, I tend to used the wrong word to express myself. So, I take back what I said on my last post #39. Let's get on with other thing, shall we.
From my understanding, "active duties" means DP would like to know if I can confirm to play or not. Please correct me, DP.
For now, all I can say is, I don't know. But please don't wait for my reply. Please give priority to other members. If you can find enough to join the league without me, please, please and please do so. I am happy to just play in the social for now.

ok,
Let's just aim for everyone having a good time. I'll be looking for two more volunteers willing to step up for active duties at CATS tomorrow night, that will round out the teams. Anyone else that wants to put their name down as a reserve please yell out.
Note that as a reserve you are simply registering an expression of interest. It helps me to know who to call on first if I need fillins. In addition the level of interest is a gauge to whether we can sustain a mini-season.
I'd only correct you if you were wrong BF.

Hi DP,
Getting complicated with words. I thought as a casual I should give member priority, moreover I hurt my arm and movement a little bit awkward.
Reserve to me means "sitting on the bench" or "fill ins" . Looks like need 4 to pull out the last minute before I can fill in. Need an outbreak of virus in CCC for that to happen.... Only kidding.
Good that I will be sparing more with Chris on that night then.

You'll be pleased to know there are now benches to sit on, though I wouldn't want you sitting there all night waiting for someone to drop out. You might as well be playing social in that case.
Which reminds me: Daniel-S, your prize from the first trials is sitting in the fridge here and its life expectancy is dropping rapidly. If it survives till Friday I'll bring it along.

Sorry Chris, I didn't know that my post could cause such inconvenience to DP. Maybe coming from a non-English background, sometimes, I tend to used the wrong word to express myself. So, I take back what I said on my last post #39.
Hi BadFever,
(and to DoublesPlease, this is still a of Topic of our CCC Trial League Games)
Came back from coaching@MSAC and found more posts, and I like it. :):):)
I encourage Open Communications.
Hey BadFever, you and some other players@ccc might think that I was attacking you... but that was not meant to be.
I was actually indicating to those 10 who have put in their names, that they should have no doubts... once in DoublesPlease's List, no other players are going to take your places.
And, as we have said @Suppertime, we will never say no to any suggestions... so when DoublesPlease suggested our CCC League Games, straight away we said "Let's try it".
And DoublesPlease decided to try 2 different systems/approaches. :):):)
And this reminded me of yschin's comments in our thread of Trial #1.
So to yschin, if you care/dare, please make your suggestions as our CCC League Games as Trial #3. Perhaps, we could do it the next Friday 20-Apr-2007.
And we can assure you... for your trial, you take full control. :):):)
BTW, it was good that yschin made the comment that our members@ccc should have first priority to participate in our trials over visitors@ccc.
We have discussed this over supper. We have decided that for the trials, all players@ccc can participate. This because many of our visitors have more experience than our members@ccc... and we value their opinions. And besides, we weren't quite sure that we were going to have enough members@ccc to participate in our trials.
Anyway, after we have decided on which system/approach we are going to select... we can assure that members@ccc do have first priority over our visitors@ccc to participate.
MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE THE ADVANTAGE/PRIVILEGE !!! :):):)
Cheers... chris@ccc

I still remember Chris try to clarify "members only event" for me as in when there are limited places.
Well, if there are limited places for trial leauge, logically it would be members only.

Sorry, didn't think before i type.
I mean in suggestion, future trial leagues could be members only event.
Besides, people shouldn't listen to me, rite. I am not the organizer, DP as in Peter (aka DoublesPlease) is.

Taking it literary, cement floor will be fine. I am actually hoping Badfever to be in the main draw, with his 'all out style of play' , I should stand a good chance of replacing him mid way.

Sorry yschin, not going to happen on this Trial, maybe next one.
DP, may I request you to swap my name with yschin on the Reserve list.
Don't just talk talk, yschin. With your handicapped status, you should play in the Trial. I think you will enjoy more than me. Don't worry, we have some doctors around to give you CPR if needed. :D :D

Yes sir , I will do it but not on the 20-4-07. I am in bolehland then. Next time when I am back and get to know some of the new members better first.
Coincidently, DP trial 2 is what i have in mind albeit DP's is much more refined in that there is a balance of 3 high and 3 low in a team ( if I got that right).
Perhaps, when we have 32 (or thereabout) members we can expand to 4 x 4 teams i.e 16 players to occupy two courts and unfinished games can always continue the following friday.
"Taking full control"- hopefully not putting ppl off from suggesting. At least I need some help from someone in drawing up the combination chart. I failed that part of the maths several times ( 4x4 isn't that a headache?)- Badfever you might be called for active duties. Not forgetting Capt for PM'ing too.
I like that part about attacking ... and with a little humour in it.. my priority when in the internet has changed to CCC forum, weather, mails and news in that order instead of CCC forum last.
Excuse me DP, interuptions into your trial no. 2 thread.

DP, may I request you to swap my name with yschin on the Reserve list.
No problem BF, I'll take you out for this one, perhaps next time.
Coincidently, DP trial 2 is what i have in mind albeit DP's is much more refined in that there is a balance of 3 high and 3 low in a team ( if I got that right).
The reason for the 6 man team is to allow a finer gradation of player skills in the teams. The problem we ran into with the three man team is that there was a large imbalance in skill both within a pair as well as between opposing pairs of players for a large proportion of the matches. The handicap went some way to balancing the sides in terms of the final scores but there is little it can do to balance the quality of the rallys.
I see a quality rally as one that is not dominated by any particular player and this can only be achieved by balancing the skills of the players. Without physically restraining players with anchors or whatnot (or perhaps a bungee attached to the end wall and the back of the more skilled player) we are really only left with careful player selection to balance things.
With 6 players in a team it is possible to arrange the matches so that only certain player combinations are selected while still allowing a reasonable number and variety of matches to be played. With four players in the team this would be difficult.
I am open to ideas on improving this. The downside of 6 players in each team is that it will be difficult to scale up to any more than two teams per night playing and I don't know whether we have enough players to put together a third team if we are to run a miniseason.

Thanks DP, that helps a lot. Otherwise, I am thinking of giving Friday badminton a miss. Too much happenings other than playing badminton SOCIALLY is not my kind of ease Friday. :(
Hey BadFever, you and some other players@ccc might think that I was attacking you... but that was not meant to be.
Hi Chris,
no hard feelings from me. But I thought I might give you and any organiser my input on future activities especially on Friday.
The MAIN reason I have been telling DP to put me in the reserve is because Friday is always difficult for me to commit to Badminton due to work related. Actually not just Friday but every other days. Sorry to say this but, right now, my work comes first. In other words, I will cancel Badminton over work eventhough I had promised you guys earlier, sorry again. I already have enough stress and pressure at work. I don't need anymore, thank you.
In conclusion, for now I ONLY WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN SOCIAL BADMINTON. I will play badminton whenever I feel like it and not because I have to.
Sorry if I offended anyone but I hope I made myself very clear and don't have to repeat again for future events.

First it was the basketball idea and now table tennis, what else could we do on friday nite CCC instead of badminton?
..... bear in mind the condition of the court hire
Anyway, I am sure table tennis at your place would most likely be welcomed. I still have a lot of badminton tapes to watch.
After all, at the nite out for cigar's lounge at hawthorn, glenferrie rd, Chris once said of the idea of renting a place all by ourselves for the nite to watch badminton video. Hope i didn't misquite u on that one, Chris.

DP:
I have a favor to ask, is that possible to put me and Kelvin_k together for friday's trial league so we can practice for CBA comp.
Of course, if it's not too much to ask, perfect scenario for my team would be me, kelvin_k and ozheater in the same time.
For the same reason, I wonder you might want to be with Fuji.
yschin:
i read the article. forgive me from graduating from the school of jumping topics as well as irrational thoughts, where can i find the virus so i can spread to my singles competitor?
For the potential social function, if you greenlight that at your house, i would move in stages as in
- ask around whether people would like that or not
- determine the date
- get that happening
This might get the members to shoot up beyond 32.

Aye aye.
Was hoping not to review my squad and try to throw the opposition team a few surprises with fill in and stuff.
Have to think of another "strategy" now.
Today, I was actually thinking of 10 things that "WOULD NOT" happen in the trial league
- a lin dan stare once the umpire does not make decision of in/out straightaway (unfriendly is not a motto of CCC, then again .....)
- players receiving medals and oversized cheques (might think of this one eventually)
- players in tears at the end of the match and falling on to the ground
- crowd shouting "jai yu" which is keep working in mandarin (what crowd)
- players waving at the crowd (ditto the previous point)
- players and coach talk in an foreign language while chainging over at 11 points (will try to make this happen while speaking cantonese just to confuse people)
- changing the shuttle in the middle of the game (think about the cost, guys!)
Fill free to put in more.

Hi smashed_1,
Yes, I have with me the magazine Badminton Asia that yschin brought back from Malaysia for us@CCC. :):):)
And I will bring it for you at our session on Friday 13-Apr-2007, the night of our CCC League Games Trial #2.
Cheers... chris@ccc
thanks chris@ccc, look forward to cing it. thanx to yschin too! maybe we could give yschin a forward payment & mb he could be kind enuf to post us the next edition?
Hi DP,
thanks for the nomination as team selector for the "Interstate" team
The following players are challenging HK "Hurricane Ken's" team:
1. S1
2. Ketut
3. K19
4. Ozzy
5. Amanda
6. Chiranthi
With the first 3 players on equal handicap could be a close league.
According to my scientific analysis, the first game on would be S1 & Ketut vs yschin & DP...following that will have to await for DP's match schedule :)

Looks like the teams are now final. As last time I would like to start play at 8pm, the nets are up at 7:30 which gives everyone a nice warmup. We'll be playing on the two courts furthest from the entrance. The list of games & results will be recorded on the whiteboard. Have fun.

Oh, a question, what's the definition of a badminton ace?
Hi monic@,
To me... a Badminton Ace is a serve that one's receiver fails to hit/return. So, it is a point scored by such a serve.
One of the ways to achieve a Badminton Ace is to perform a deceptive flick serve.

Thank you for the ace explanation. Since there were hundreds of aces, I'm guessing that they were the unreturnable serves, not untouched ones... but I could be wrong! :o

Hi DP,
A big thanks to yschin for the medallion - muchly appreciated and thanks for coming all the way from KL to play in our little league :)
No worries, it is from all the participants (they owed me a few cents each). I took it upon myself to chose a medallion 'cos it can be engraved with CCC... etc on it and that is the only thing I can find with a badminton & shuttle on it which I thought might be more appropriate in this case.
Maybe you can come all the way from Melb and I organise a little league for you here.

Badminton Ace occurs when the shuttlecock leaves the server's racket and finishes on the receiver's court, untouched by the receiver.

Badminton Ace occurs when the shuttlecock leaves the server's racket and finishes on the receiver's court, untouched by the receiver.
Is there a term called "return ace" as you serve, receiver touch that the rally is finished.
As you can see, i am more excited by this instead of ace cos it shows receiver is up to the challenge of uh .....
receiving serve?

opinion for trial leauge in terms of organizing:
Good points:
- roster finalized one week before the event, well done!
- people play with/against each other on a equal level, WELL DONE!
- most of players seem to know what's going on in terms of the rundown of the lague
- almost everybody had a go at umpire
- great backup plan regarding reserves
Improvements:
- we need more people to help out for umpire, match schedule, updating score when DP is playing. This could well be achieved if 1 or 2 person besides DP knew what was going on rather than asking people to read about the discussion board regarding the event.
Sorry DP, could have come to the supper on wed day before the "big day" to sort things out, but i had private coaching the day after. But i am more than happy if you hand me duty on the nite.
Summary, great event! And a miracle in terms of the result as in 9 all.
