Hi All! - Does anyone know if you can buy a rebound net for badminton? - I just can't seem to find one! Plenty of tennis ones but not for badminton! - Help.
Cheers

Wouldn't a wall be good enough?

Rebound net? You hit the shuttle into a net and it springs back to you, that kind of rebound net?

You mean like the ones for baseball and soccer? I have not seen such a thing for badminton, a wall does just fine.

A shuttle cock wont adequately rebound off a net, try a table tennis ball against a wall if your wanting to improve eye hand coordination. (you will break the ball within half an hour), but there cheap. If your wanting to practice your recovery shots a shuttle against the wall works but has limited "bounce".

This is actually a good idea. Let me do some research and see if I can build one and test it with local high school team. (Picture will be included if I can actually build it)

If there would be such a "net", that would be great...

Perhaps not a net, it must be like a trampoline...

It must be springy or flexible

Somethin gummy/out of rubber and it must be stretched like a net.

I tried a wall, but i does not work very wall, perhaps it depends on the material of the wall...

You are in the right direction. However, my idea is th make it like a frame and string it with some tension. The frame can adjust angle. This will simulate more like real badminton shot

Yes, perhaps you could try smashes without opponent...

You wouldnt get the set up right, to practice a smash you need someone on the opposite side to lob shots high into the middle of the court (oh and you need the net there too).

No, the "rebound net" should return the shuttle after the smash.

I know, that it's nearly impossible, but who knows...

I'm very interessted in silenthearts construction...

But I think it also would be quite good if you can do some drives with his construction better then with a normal wall.

I spoke to some badminton industry people about this a few years ago...

To my knowledge there was nothing available.

The main reasons as outlined by other posters already...

Due to the nature of the shuttle & the way it travels, the trampoline effect would end up absorbing the shuttle momentum rather than fire it back out towards you.

Also a simple net itself would end up destroying the shuttle in no time at all... eg shuttle rotation would cause the net threads to shear the bottom part of the shuttle.

However it is still possible to construct something of a different nature...
The key in order to have enough propelling force to have the shuttle rebound.

then go from there.

Just make one gigantic badminton frame with an added stand of sorts for stability.

I would recommend that for now to keep the frame design simple... eg a large rectangle or square, so you can thread some badminton string through little holes. in the frame. Using your stringing machine you can pull tension from a far... lol nothing in heavy tensions though just take CD6's approved 15-18lbs as a reference.

Just keep in mind you may or may not need to drill a ton of little holes into this frame lol... I'll open up MS paint, and sketch out a little pictogram of what I was thinking of (gives me a chance to work on my e-drawing skills) :D

:p Ok so here is my quick 2 minute sketch LOL
So again forgive me for my crappy MS paint imitation CAD art.

2 different ideas.

#1
Simple badminton square with protruding stand to aid in stability.
Design a wood frame, drill small holes into the sides for stringing (cheap string, not nanogy98s or anything fancy)

You can place it on a pedestal, or if you want, build your own little stand to place it on top of... I just drew one in for illustration purposes.

#2
This guy is a bit more thorough...
a large triangular badminton frame similar to one of those swiveling mirrors...
You have 2 support posts jutting out the back, anchored down into 2 beams.
Drill holes placed into the bottom of the beam, secured with bolts, so you can adjust angle of the frame itself for smash returns (lower angle), to drives (more upright angle)

The little red blotches are the holes i drew in quickly that would need to be drilled into a wooden frame to thread the string through... keep in mind, something extra will always be needed for the grommet holes... to prevent friction burns or if you can smoothe out the angles that would be even better...

Only problem with these designs is to string the damn buggers...:p

Hope that gives you an idea of what I was thinking of...

Again to get a better look, just save the jpeg, and enlarge to 200% of normal size lol

My apologies again for crappy sketch work.

I neglected to mention one thing for my whacky designs...

You would need to pull the string to a higher tension in order to achieve a decent sweet spot to repel the shuttle back towards you.:o

15-18lbs would be too loose, and result in the strings in the important hitting areas not offering repulsion you may want.

It is possible to practice half smashes to work on basic technique by tossing the shuttle high up into the air.

Looks very cool, but how expensive will this be?
Do I have to sell my car for this?!?

I would guess so. Looks impressive though.

Could knock something together with a cam driven racquet and drop feeder if your just looking to practice offensive shots through, dificulty comes with making the machine fire a random patern or hit shots down.

Yes, you would have to take public transit for quite some time.

I heard it was going to be about $6000 Canadian funds.

I'm surprised no one else has developed anything like that for training purposes... but then again, its just as easy to find a playing partner at your local sports hall and they are free to play/train against :D

Anywho, back on topic...

Waiting to see what Master Heart will come up with :D

Do I smell a challenge comming up? I will be busy for the next month or so. However, I have some ideas and design that I can build a proto-type device after May 20th. I want to test it first and take some pictures. Also, if I screwed up, I can just claim that I totally for got about it.:D

LOL reread what I wrote.
I was just saying I'm looking forward to seeing what type of design you will make; of course, when you have more time. :D

Otherwise the wall is free, and nylon shuttles last me forever.

Hi Kelvin,

I should have put a smile face on my last post. Anyway, I do think my design have to be mounted on a wall or some kind of post. A stand will not be secure enough.
