MS Final

Taufik Hidayat beat Chen Hong 21-18, 21-19.

TH was in splendid form and was always a step or two ahead of CH. There was no sign of injury and TH appeared in good physical condition. TH's overhead smash was killing CH's lifts, although the latter is also endowed with a similar lethal weapon. But in backhand, TH was unbeatable as he used it as though with his forehand and displayed strength, versatility and accuracy to taunt CH. Not that CH's own backhand is no good, but TH's was better.

Coupled with a superb net display, TH was almost calling the shots at the net, much to CH's chagrin. The inevitable outcome had to come sooner than later in straight games as TH upped the pace.

I suppose the short layoff by CH's self-imposed early retirement put paid to his final efforts. He has done relatively well to have gone into the finals although he was stretched by a rejuvenated Yeoh Kay Bin in three games 21-14, 17-21, 21-17 in the SF. CH appears to be a 'free' man adorning the colours of badminton equipment supplier "Victor". I thought I saw Xiong Guobao acting as his coach?

Nice pics Loh... Chen Hong is happy to be in the Finals. Too bad he lost, but he is glad for the results.

Yes Chen Hong must be feeling something else now he is representing himself rather than the state.

A little off-topic:

Victor must also be glad that a player at the elite circle is endorsing their products. I have seen some CCTV program that Zhoa Jian Hwa is using Victor rackets so it seems that Victor is making some headway towards ex-national players who are not obliged to use rackets from the state sponsor Yonex.

Not surprise though that CH endorses Victor, a Taiwan brand, given his connections with Taiwan. But do surprise that local brand such as Kason do no see this commercial opportunity.

Lee Wan Wah-Chong Tan Fook beat Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong
21-14, 11-21, 21-12

Without their coach to tip them, the more experienced senior pair of LWW-CTF prevailed to douse the intermittent fires of their young compatriots. So the veteran pair has earned their keep to prove that they could be as effective as the recently-crowned AE champions.

LWW-CTF gave back all they took from KKK-TBH and even came up tops with LWW at the net and the aggressive CTF at the back to demonstrate his powerful smashes. They are not 'old' as they kept pace and tactics with the younger pair.

Even in the semi-finals, they came back from a game down to overhaul another young Malaysian pair, Zakry-Tazari, 11-21, 21-13, 21-15.

With renewed confidence LWW and CTF can surely remain in the limelight for a longer period. Now that they have won the ABC crown, I don't foresee attempts to force them into early reitrement as earlier feared. :)

Nice Pics Loh. Was watching at home... and the MS match was kinda interesting. A lot of tricky shots esp at the net from both players and they seem to look like they're enjoying themselves. It's just rare to see TH laughing and smiling so much while playing heheh.. I like the hand shake and hug after the game.

As for the MD.. I wish the veterans will play like this at other international tournaments. They attacked a lot and more aggresive.. and like.. no fear of the youngsters. After all, they're former World No 1... 'dun pray pray' ah :D

Lu Lan defeated Wong Mew Choo 21-17, 21-18

Mew Choo did not disgrace herself as she matched Lu Lan most of the way. WCM had to be more hardworking as the taller Lu took advantage of her height and reach to force the pace. She must have been quite traumatized when WCM managed to return most of her powerful attacking clears and sharp angled drops.

In fact had WMC remained focussed and taken her shots well in the latter part of the second game, she could have won as Lu was visibly tired and resorted to time wasting. But the slight chance for a breather saw Lu intensifying her pace towards the end and knocked WMC out of competition.

Yang Wei-Zhao Tingting beat Ogura Kumiko-Shiota Reiko 21-15, 21-9

These pictures are specially for Dreamz who just adores Reiko-san and Kumiko-san.

The Japanese girls showed glimpses of their potential in the first game but completely fizzled out in the second. The new Chinese partnership with the more experienced Yang Wei as anchor were just too good on the day. They went on to win the Final against a new and younger Chinese pair Cheng Shu-Zhao Yunlei 21-10, 21-11. This victory came as a consolation for Zhao Tingting who partnered Xu Chen in the XD final but lost to fellow countrymen, He Hanbin-Yu Yang 20-22, 15-21.

i saw it somewhat differently. Smashing was equally strong from both side. TH won mainly because of numerous unforced errors by CH from employing too much deception. CH made several lifting out when TH was caught out of base position. TH was playing mostly on the safe side, nothing spectacular but keep the bird in play.

Oh yes, I enjoyed myself with some of my new found friends, one a member of this Forum.

We all met at the Kranji MRT (Mass Rapid Transit, basically a train as your LRT) bus stop at the appointed time. There we took a bus across the causeway, after presenting ourselves in person with our passports at the two Immigration checkpoints (Singapore and Malaysia).

With time on our side, we took a leisurely walk to City Square to have our lunch before we made the rest of our way to City Stadium, the venue, by taxi. Even by then, the good seats in the Indoor Stadium had all be taken up. Johorians were all geared up for the live entertainment that ensued and you should hear the din they made when a good fight was on hand, especially involving Malaysian players.

Yeah. When the prize ceremony was over, the fans on our side were cajoling KKK to throw over to them the souvenir Yonex T-shirt, packed in a transparent roll.

The guys in front of me stood up, excited, shouting and gesturing with their hands high up, all ready to catch like a goalkeeper. They were blocking my view so I had no choice but to stand up too to see what was going on. Before I knew it, something smacked right on to my face. KKK spotted me and used me as target. So I got the souvenir. But it had no KKK autograph and it is "S" size. :D

What chance do you have against KKK? Yes, I may be able to return one smash, two, but the third will come down so hard on my face that I may not be able to play on! So you win some, lose some. That way you can still enjoy the game.

I think KKK recognized me because I took a pic with him and the Malaysian women's doubles pair during the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. So he purposely rewarded me with my effort. :D

Oh no, I can't hold the camera with my hands. Not only will it be too tiring, the camera will shake and we will have most of the pictures with double images. I use a tripod to hold the camera while I click on it. But because the game is so fast, I have to set to the highest ISO speed and hope the autofocus can do its job properly. But as you can see from some pics, the images are not that clear.

Yes I've captured some shots as follows:

Xu Chen-Zhao Tingting beat Mohd Tazari Mohd Fairuzi-Wong Pei Tty
21-19, 23-21

A close fight indeed and could have been won by the Malaysians had Tazari been more effective and not lost too many points through unforced errors.

The Chinese pair went on to lose in the Final against lessor known compatriots He Hanhin-Yu Yang, 20-22, 15-21.

Jiang Yanjiao beat Lu Lan 25-23, 23-21

Lu Lan, who defeated Wong Mew Choo in the semi-final, is seeded higher at *2 but Jiang (*3/4) caused a minor upset. The scores were very close and went to deuce for the two straight games.

Though shorter in height, Jiang was more mobile on court and her tenacity frustrated Lu, who again showed weakness in her fitness. Stamina, or the lack of it, seemed to be her most glaring liability.

In the end, Jiang emerged the more deserving winner. And indeed the crown should rightly be hers as she has already demonstrated her ability in the semi-finals by defeating no.1 seed, Wang Chen in a more convincing victory of 21-13, 21-17.

You have sharp eyes, Chris. But can you also see the official BC T-shirt that one of us wore? :D As you can see, Kwun was the tallest of all and he made use of his height to great advantage!

BTW, this 2004 gathering comprised BC members who came from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Mauritius, Indonesia and Vietnam apart from Singapore. Of course, Kwun hailed from USA!

This is one of my reader's comments, he want me to pass this message to our players.

I think that Malaysian Players want to achieve higher perfomance level and keep thier perfomance consistent need to have one Chinese Medication Doctor who can provide consultation on “HOW TO KEEP BALANCE THIER ENERGY YING AND YANG, QI AND SUE!” This is very very important to help the player to build up their body thoroughly and cure thier inbalance from the root cause!

Players like Lee Chong Wei and Hafiz facing back injuries and can’t recovered thoroughly. Chong Wei claim that he afraid of his back injuries will come back and make him can’t strive himself so hard in the match! His problems need Chinese Acupunture to solve! and need some chinese herbs to improve the stamina and strength! Recently we heard that Lee Chong Wei said his strength drop! He need Chinese herbs like Bei Qi, Ginseng or Cordicep so that his strength could be recovered! Chinese Medication is far more practical and is proven good if not chinese people won’t use it for more than 5000 years! Modern nutritionist is still new and a lot of theory still hypothesis mean still need time to be proven!
We have to give some constructive suggestion to them if we really love them and want them to excel in other tournaments! Someone who know thems pls transfer this message!

I think one body fate to earn how much money and fame is destined! If Koo and Tan lose again in Singapore and Indonesia it means that they have gather enough rewards and thats all for thier live! No point! our fate is destined, if thier merits is finished means finished! If they want more i think they need to do more good things like helping people, distribute education or religion books or VCD, do charity or free fish and animals. We have to believe this, according to one famous book in China call Liao Fan Four lesson, it clarify clearly about one person carreer acheivement and developement basically is destined by the merits he gather in his previous life! The more merits u gather , the more u get in this life! This formula is like u plant a mango seed u will get the mango to eat few years later!
Lee Chong Wei’s merits seem to be finished. He have good skill, but most of the time lost although lead the game at 1st half! He really don’t have luck! or in other words call good merits! Lin Dan and Taufik seem to have more merits gather in previous life or maybe they are doing some good deed or charity in this life! They easily get want they want! Chong Wei and KOO & Tan really really have to do some good jobs if they want to excel thier achievement in World Championship in August and Olympic in Beijing 2008. The best things to do is free fish or birds or other animals! Is the fastest way of gather good merits! Bcoz u save somebody precious life!

JB is nearest to Singapore.

Daily, many thousands of Johorians cross the causeway to Singapore for work and return home after. Some children come to study. Being mostly urban, JB is relatively modern and one could see new developments springing up here and there. The many shopping complexes are as good as any found in the more developed towns and cities in Malaysia.

With the recently announced IDR plan to develop Johor as an enlarged economic zone and to take advantage of Singapore's thriving economic position, JB is expected to grow much faster and Johorians are expected to benefit from this potential. Although wealth will rise, so will prices and the cost of living. But it will take many years before JB will be able to enjoy the expected economic boom.

City Stadium

The organizers presented something different during the intervals. Very colourful Malay dances in traditional costumes but with doses of modernity in the dancing were performed in front of an almost empty VIP arena, sadly. How I wished I was seated there to enjoy the display!

Small BC United Nations!
...yes, the one on kwun;) ...not sure abt others though..
Btw, thanks for sharing a bit more of your JB & ABC festivities pics...

The girl in pink is Aki Akao and she is standing next to Tomomi Matsuda. Both of them are Japan upcoming pair. They played well against the Chinese but still lose. Still improving.

yeah, they're ranked 8th in the world now, which is higher than reiko/kumiko at 12th. you can really see the improvement in teams when they have good coaches like Park Joo Bong, Tan Kim Her and Rexy Mainaky of course.

Actually my friends took a lot of pictures with the badminton stars like Chen Hong , Sato, Lee Wan Wah, Park Joo Pong , Rexy, Lee Chong Wei etc...

They stayed in New York Hotel. So normally after the match they will go and eat supper near the hotel because the food there quite nice.. My friends went there to eat supper too and therefore can take some photos with them. :p :p

Hi Loh, I'm just a newbie photographer and have a lot to learn. Yep will be taking some photos during the tournament. Too bad I dun have a guest pass this year.

Will check with the guys like slacker, utopia, netasia etc if they are able to join you for dinner.

Cheers! :)

Taufik Hidayat beat Sridhar Anup (India) 21-19, 21-14

Anup played well in the first game which was evenly matched before he lost. But Taufik was always faster in the second game and employ his devastating smash to good effect to leave Anup far behind, collecting 14 points only in the end.

Despite his loss, Anup has shown that Indian badminton is certainly not to be trifled with. To have gone this far, Anup has proven that he is the man to watch in future tournaments.

Take note of Taufik's backhand stance at the baseline and in the forecourt.
