MS - Hendrawan (INA) i really admire this guy, hes much older than most of the other players and yet hes able to keep up with the top players of today. Also, right when people thought he was too old, he was crowned the World Champion

MD - Tony Gunawan (INA) Being a mixed doubles player, i really watch plenty of doubles action on tv to watch the tactics closely, my favourite MD player is Tony Gunawan, he has been the guy that has always encourage Halim when they were losing in matches. A great source of inspiration and excellent badminton

LS - Gong Zhizhao (CHN) Before she turned pro, people said that she wouldn't never make it because she was too short. But she trained hard and made it to the top 5 and was even crowned Olympic Champion. Though her performance has been shaky as of late, she is still my favourite LS player.

LD - Ra Kyung Min (KOR) I've watched her in her matches and she is truely a great player. She never loses her temper and seldom makes mistakes. When she and partner loses a match, most of the time, it isn't her fault.....

MX - Tony Gunawan (INA) Although Tony only partnered Marissa Vita for a while in MX, in my opinion, he is still the best doubles player today

MS - Gopi( as i have personally seen him train and knowing the difficulties he faced when he played baddy) So i am slightly biased

If not then Henderwan,Petergade

MD - Best and the nicest too

LS - Gong Zhi chao

This thread just reminded me to tell every badminton fan out there: I've updated the voting booths (if anyone remembers). You can now vote in a crazy mode for your favourite singles players :)

MS: Hendrawan - I started watching badminton because I saw him coming back from many points down in a match on tv one day and got so impressed by his strong will and determination. Skills aside, he's a really hardworking, humble and respectable guy. Great role model.

MD: Candra - He's one of the nicest pple on earth. Tony too. Such fantastic players and Olympic gold medallists, yet more humble and friendly than so many other players.

On the ladies side, I'm most impressed by Ra Kyung Min.
I like the combination of Kim/Ra. They're very good. But I agree that the match against Tony/Vita was a really close one. Very entertaining and exciting!!

I'm sure there're many new players we can watch out for as well. =P

Call me an old-timer perhaps, but to date there are a few whom I'm most exceedingly impressed with.

MS: Zhao Jianhua, Yang Yang.

More recent players? Probably Hendrawan and Taufik Hidayat.

MD: Park Joo Bong, Tony Gunawan, Sigit Budiarto.

LS: Susi Susanti, Ye Zhaoying, Gong Zhicao

LD: Huang Nanyan, Nong Qunhua, Ge Fei, Gu Jun.

MS: Peter Gade has everything but not best in one. I like the way Hendrawan play, however, I feel that he needed more power, even that since he was younger. Now I like Xia,remind me of Michael Jordan, when I saw his FADE AWAY SMASH.

MD: Tony and Jandra are the best. Have you seen Pramote from Thailand, the way he place the shuttle.

LS: Ruina if more consistency.

This has nothing to do with fav players but I juz wanna say that Tony Gunawan's decision to quit is depressing. The term in US starts in Fall (August or September) so I hope he'll at least play his last Thomas Cup for INA next year, although it doesn't seem very viable from the looks of it.

What a depressing way to end two depressing days. And I was just thinking tt things may be looking up a bit. I'm so sad.

MS - Peter gader for his style and intensity, Hendrawan adn Obviously Gopi as i have had the oppurtunity to see him in action straight! So my view abt gopi would be very biased but still...

MD Tony Gunawan

LS Susi and Gong..

Gong is just the prefect example for someone who wants to learn how to move in court! she does it like iceskating... Susi and gong are pretty small but yet...

I suppose I'm of Bbn's era as I have seen all the players he's mentioned and I agree with all his choices, especially the great Rudy Hartono , Tjun Tjun and Li Ling Wei. However, I would like to add Peter Gade for MS and Park Joo Bong for MD and XD to the list. Ge Fei should make it for LD.

Not only results count I think, but also style, character, charisma etc. A lot of people seem to have confused "favourite players" for "best players" which I think isn't the same thing at all.

MS: Peter Rasmussen (for the beautiful footwork, the amazing jump smashes, and for his calm attitude on court)

LS: Camilla (for being the John McEnroe of badminton), Mia Audina (for beating both Mother Nature and gravity)

MD: Jens Eriksen (for being such a bad-ass), Sigit Budiarto (for never playing safe), Ha Tae Kwon (for being such an entertainer)

LD: Helene Kirkegaard (for showing that the LD can be every bit as fast and hard as MD)

MX: Michael Søgaard (for aiming for a WC title at 34)

OK, I'll explain very carefully.

Look on the left column which has your user name.
Underneath that, there are some numbers - some of these represent the date of your post.
Look at the postings bove yours and look at the numbers - they have dates earlier than yours.
Go back to the 1st posting which was Byro-n...he was the thread starter a couple of years ago.
Look carefully at the order of dates and you will see that they are arranged carefully according to the date posted, most recent post being last on the list. (This is done automaticaly by the software)
Your thread got merged by a moderator with the old one since the meaning of the thread was exactly the same.
So perhaps by linking up these facts, you can see why you are not the threadstarter - Byro-N got there first!! Bad luck..

MD - Park Joo Bong & Kim Moon Soo; Chandra Wijaya & Sigit Budiarto
WS - Ye Zhao Ying
WD - no idea
MD - no idea

Zhao Jian Hua during his heyday is THE man.
Foo Kok Keong is one tireless workhorse, one of the few with a very formidable defence.
The Koreans have no peer in their era; they only play attack, almost no defence :)
The Indonesians play almost the same kind of badminton but not as dangerous, but all in all, I prefer them to the Ricky & Rexy team. Sigit's jump smashes, one that I saw during one particular All-England Open (or was it S'pore Open?), was the highest I've ever seen, almost like Zhao.

Kim dong moon- so good, and KOREAN PRIDE!

Zhao jian hua- has very penetrating shots, and tall, so good angles

Fung Permadi- he seems to make all the shots (smashes, clears, slices) look so easy, and (i think) one of the best in terms of techniques, and he's also tall, so good angles

Taufik Hidayat- Very good smashes, and lots-of style!

i think everybody should list out their reasons for having their favorite players.

kwun
12-14-2004, 04:21 PM
for me:

MS:

Xia "big mouth" Xuanze - not for the size of his mouth, but for his style of play. brilliantly fast and explosive, outrageous style, but most of all, how he always seem to enjoy his game. anybody can play an extravangent shots, but only Xia can do it in style.

WS:

Xie Xingfang - for her ruthless style, and her coolness. brilliant skills and smartness when she is in her good day.

Zhou Mi - i am slowly starting to enjoy watching Zhou Mi play. fast, powerful and clinical skills. always wears a smile in her face. despite her constantly changing and "interesting" hairstyle.

MD:

Jonas Rasmussen / Lars Paaske - Jonas for being such a great guy and plays brilliant badminton, powerful, fast and most important of all, smart. doubles is a game where we rarely see ppl left standing watching the shuttle but i have seen JR/LP pulling that off numerous times.

WD:

Yang Wei / Zhang Jiewen - the perfect WD players in my eyes. tall, powerful, fast and smart, they have it all. Zhang Jiewen for her raw power, vision and speed (looks helps too.. ;) ) and Yang Wei for her "i can pull a more brilliant and outrageous shot than you" attitude. they two always knows where it hurts the most, whether it is a flesh/floormat pentrating smash, or where it takes you the most effort to retrieve. and they do it with such speed and fluidity. i believe they will be in par with Ge Fei/Gu Jun for olympics gold if they choose to stay for another 4 yrs.

XD:

this is tough one, despite being my favorite event of the 5, i am still having problem finding my favorite pair. i like to rate my favorite players by their skill, style and attitude, and there are so few who fits the strict criteria. maybe i need to give it more thoughts.

Okay Kwun as to current players for me:

MS:

Taufik "baby faced assassin" Hidayat
Cool as a cucumber, except under extreme circumstances - questionable line calls, when he can be as fiery as a volcano.
Unbelievable reflexes, but for the most - one of the best backhands in Men's Singles!

Lee Hyun Il - greatest defensive player, the only player to rival him is Kenneth Jonassen (though I am not a fan of his)

Xia Xuanze - over the top fantastic player, forehand down the line smash unstoppable

WS:
Wang Cheng - smooth, cool and economical, sharp shots, excellent timing.

Mia Audina - great amazing player, round the head shots fantastical unorthodox and incredible gets take most off guard.

MD:
Ha Tae Kwon / Kim Dong Moon, explosive, full on, flat out power attack, apart for Indonesian, and Malaysian's only true flat driving attacking game - and the best at it!

WD:
Yang Wei / Zhang Jiewen - have to agree with Kwun.

XD:
Untill recently Kim Dong Moon / Ra Kyun Min, fast, controlled aggression, explosive short attack shots,
but best of all smart play and great understanding between the two.

Nathan Robertson / Gail Emms - great traditional western mixed.

No, lin dan relies on strength and speed rather than skill. His technique ie the way he moves about the court and plays his shots is not up there with the likes of chen hong, taufik etc. However he is able to produce amazing speed in his smashes especially in the 'round the head' corner.

TrueBlue
08-22-2005, 02:06 PM
I think Taufik is technically most skilled. He has the best backhand in men`s singles. And he has the best netplay. He also has the best jumpsmash and best drops (deceptive ones).
So LD is 2nd.

Trance

I have no doubt Chen Hong, Peter Gade, and Taufik have tremendous skill and that Taufik is the best, but we sometimes overlook Lin Dan's skill when we see his world #1 status and his speed. Don't forget that without his skill allowing him to surpass Taufik, he would not have made it to #1 nor been able to have gone through that major run through 2004.

Basically, it is suggested:
Lin Dan
Peter Gade
Jonassen
LCW
Taufik
BaoCL

This may be the ranking in points...after winning WC, Taufik moves one spot from 6 to 5. If this is so, I think a lot of people would see it differently based on recent performance instead of points.

It will be very interesting when the numbers are finally crunched.

on a related note: I'm not sure how ranking points are calculated, but how will the WC results affect singles rankings? How far will Taufik climb up the ladder, and will the top two ladies switch positions?

Zhang Ning will probably hold on to the world no 1 spot by a whisker with Xie XingFang just a few points adrift even after WC, if the scoring table for a 7* event is anything to go by.

For WS, I especially like XXF for her aesthetics and vulnerability (you actually get nervous for her when it looks as if she may crack under the pressure and lose, even though she actually has great resolve to win). ZN is arguably the more complete player as far as technical skilled is concerned. XXF does have some killer overhead drops though.

My personal favourite MS player would have to be Taufik Hidayat. Most naturally talented player today. Best net play and backhand by far. His backhand is somewhat reminiscent of Hoyer Larsen.

For MS, ranking order after WC will probably be:
1. Lin Dan
2. Kenneth Jonassen
3. Peter Gade
4. Taufik Hidayat
5. Lee Chong Wei

why nobody pick double's players?

my fave players are Nathan Robertson - he's such a confident showman, and immensely talented with the racquet. after that it'd have to be jens eriksen.. both players are solid foundations for mixed partnerships.

girls wise - i admire gail emms, while lots of people say she isn't as fast or strong as the asian girls she makes up for it in raw determination, i've never seen somebody with that sort of mental strength. her and mia's win at the MVP cup really solidfied this for me, and the fact that she and donna kellog have rapidly reached the top 10 since becoming a partnership in the last 12 months.

there we go... all done :)

altho i can't help but sneak in that i think kenneth is great too. simply for his fighting spirit, his great backhand and that fantastic duel with xia in the QF of WC2003.

hmm, i don't know about stamina actually... he seemed pretty worn out in the WC final. and taufik had spent more time on court than LD in the tournament overall.. sometimes speed and stamina aren't as important as technique and efficient footwork. Lin Dan is a very raw, young power player, and has done extremely well to get to no.1 at such a young age. i think taufik and gade might be getting up with him now. But who knows with more practice and experience Lin Dan's technique could improve sufficiently for him to continue his domination...

I think it's understood that the original question refers to current players. So my answer would be Taufik, just because he's playing style is so beautiful to watch...especially that graceful backhand crosscourt drop.

But, I do agree that of all time, Rudy Hartono has to be tops...(after all I was named after him -- I was born a month after he won his 1st All England in 68)

Taufik cannot claim 2nd place yet. He merely does not have enough points claimed in order to overtake Kenneth Jonassen even after winning the WC. 6th place to 2nd is a big jump and it can't be done in 1 tournament. At the moment Taufik has about 29k points and LD has 41k. Jonassen has 34k... Taufik will have to consistently win championships in order to overtake Jonassen. LD has quite a major lead too.

After the WC, XXF has switched places with ZN.

For MD, Candra/Sigit have taken over as #1 (which we all expected to happen), Eriksen/Lundgaard have fallen to #2, Luluk/Alven are #3... although I don't think they have been as outstanding as some of the other pairs, Paaske/Rasmussen are #4 (they've been doing well, except they haven't been getting into finals lately and have been losing in quarters and semis alot), and Cai/Fu are #5 dropping from #3 spot probably due to their lack of consistency and the fact that they haven't been performing very well in the last couple of tourneys.

Hats off to Gunawan and Bach from jumping 5 places from 13th to 8th spot after WC win! ;)

I'm personally very suprised have much the World Champs weighed in the rankings. Zhou Mi and Mia Audina have dropped SIGNIFICANTLY! Zhou Mi's early exit has led her to 11th place now and Mia is 20th place

Taufik Hidayat! I agree with what you guys said about taufik. His backhand is absolutely amazing, the guy has control and power - he could send the shuttle from one end of the court to the other (Don't believe me? Check out WC QF). I have nothing against the other great players, but Taufik's great backhand, precision and netplay makes his badminton incredibly efficient and can make the other guy run like crazy with minimum effort! Physical fitness fades with age, but technique lasts forever. He knows how badminton should really be played...

If we are talking about favourite players of all time then for me it has to be Zhao Jianhua for his sheer brilliance. He had everything, the best technique, amazing deception and he revolutionised the jumpsmash. Anybody who has seen the video of him beating Joko in the '90 AE final will know what I'm talking about. The only thing he lacked was the consistency and the champion's mind.

Modern players, it would be Chen Hong who is probably the closest to Zhao in the modern game in his style, or Gade for his exceptional tactics, reverse slice and his distinctive playing style

i saw for the first time today the video of gade performing the trickshot netshot where he goes to play a normal netshot and then flicks his racket under to perform a cross-court. totally inspirational, especially as it was on a match point:eek:

If we are talking about favourite players of all time then for me it has to be Zhao Jianhua for his sheer brilliance. He had everything, the best technique, amazing deception and he revolutionised the jumpsmash. Anybody who has seen the video of him beating Joko in the '90 AE final will know what I'm talking about. The only thing he lacked was the consistency and the champion's mind.

Modern players, it would be Chen Hong who is probably the closest to Zhao in the modern game in his style, or Gade for his exceptional tactics, reverse slice and his distinctive playing style

Actually Bao reminds me of Zhao Jain hua more then Chen Hong.. Zhao Jain Hua was one of those genius style player..every move had to be pretty to watch..long arm long reach... he never seems rushed..

Well a combination of bao's movement and chen's attacking shots and smash would be pretty close to zhao

Favourite Mixed Doubles; ... has to be Emms & Robertson

Favourite Singles, without a shadow of a doubt has to be Peter Gade. I've always admired his style and way he conducts himself. I think I preferred watching him play with an MP88. But I still love to watch him play.

As for Mens & Womens doubles, I guess I haven't quite decided. Mixed and Singles I watch most, as they're my favourite 2 events. Women's singles I just can't decide.

Possibly, after watching several videos of past games, Susi Susanti.

I like Peter Gade Christensen the most. He's the most handsome badminton player. :D He has very good footwork. His sportsmanship is above everyone else. If he hadn't injured his knee last time :crying: , I think he would still be the world number 1. No worries, he's catching up. ;) But sometimes I wonder if ageing has hindered him yet.
After Gade, I like Taufik the most (although I think he needs to smile more often).

My favorite of all is Wong Choong Hann even though he doesn't play anymore (I don't think). I really like his utter determination and the look on his face when he starts to win.
Peticularly in this video. After he loses his first game he comes back in the second with anger (it looks like).

It seems like he either can't handle the pressure of being in finals (seems like he always makes it pretty far and then loses it, making one wonder HOW he got that far), or he's a little lazy/has a laissez faire attitude. Also doesn't seem very aggressive compared to most Chinese players. Cause it seems like many many of his smashes hit the net, or he doesn't seem fast enough, and he has no excuse since he's so damn tall. Its like he has moments of brilliance but they're few and far in between =P. I haven't seen any of his games prior to a final or semi final so I don't know.

I think bao is one of the exceptions to the general rule in chinese single players.. he's very tall, compare him with dan, xia, chen jin etc. and previous chinese singles players..

also, he doesn't seem show the lower body strength - he hasn't got the bulging quads like the other chinese players.. and his styles isn't the explosive, hard hitting style, he's more of a rallyer and a deciever. i think we'll see bao still around, in the top 5/10 until he's in his early 30's when gade, jonassen, taufik, dan, chen hong, etc. etc have passed by or burnt out..

He's really the best in terms of raw talent, though I'd have to say that it SEEMS other players have a lot more motivation (or maybe impending punishment hanging over their heads ) or .. hunger to win or something.

just some side info, for Taufik's expensive wedding, from reading a source in chinese, quite a big chunk of the $$ came from the girl's father. His wife's dad is some very important person in Indo and for his wedding, even the president and vice president were there to participate. So I think in terms of being rich, his wife came from a MUCh richer family than he is.

Alright...I'm gonna give it to you that Lin Dan has amazing court coverage. He has the most amazingly fast reflexes. But as most people have noticed he doesn't have the mental confidence to keep up with some people. If he had that he would be the best all around player in the world, he would be a phenominal player. Right now he is just great. Not amazing, but great. If he had a few attributes of other players that he plays against, (Taufik Hidiyat's jump smash, Peter Gade's mental stamina, etc.) he would be the best player to have walked the face of the earth.
