View Full Version : Speed Training, skipping ropes, frog leaps??

As usual, my speed in badminton isn't quick (and not quick enough to combat the opponent). One of my friend told me to do skipping ropes, and another friend said frog leaps. Which one has the most benefit? Does speed do with my weight?
Any more way for speed training, please comment for me ASAP :crying:

skipping will help more, it helps you to keep on your toes (balls of your feet), and helps you bounce around the court. Speed in badminton isn't about how fast you can run, it's about being able to change direction and moving towards the shuttle as soon as you can, so you have to be light on your feet. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee =p can be applied to badminton also. And yes, weight will be a factor, lighter players should be able to start moving earlier than a heavier player.

skipping does help, but just do more footwork at training and you will become much faster around the court.
just make sure your one your toes and have a low centre of gravity so you can spring off when the opponent hits the next shot.

I think, my balance isn't good as well, plus it might be caused by my weight (70 kg) (height only just over 170cm)
Anyway to train my balance while doing foot steps??

to get better balance you need to do squating and lunging to build muscles in your legs so you can push off and get back into position quickly

Don't do frog leaps I remembered seeing a topic about if you do frog leaps it's really hard on the knees. Try something else =)

Agreed, avoid the frog jumps. There was a fairly recent thread on this one. Rope skipping is very good -- preferably not on hard pavement. Vary the skipping speed. Also try some interval training with the rope skipping -- do some high-intensity skipping for 20-40 seconds or more and follow it with some (low-intensity) walking for the same amount of time. Repeat the interval sequence over & over -- you can vary the time.

Look for plyometric and other power training for your legs. Do a Search.

I wonder why more people don't suggest fast feet drills like line hops or box hops.

For example, find a line and jump back and forth over it quickly, for sets of 10 seconds. See how many repetitions you can get.

frog leap helps you only a tieni weenie bit. it trains only ur thighs. skipping is different.. it is safe and makes you feel light as a feather... before training if you skip it helps your momentum( for me )

Frog leaps = BAD! Very bad for the knees -- not worth it.

Do you have more examples of fast feet drills like this? (maybe with picture?) I found those very helpful.
Thank you.

All are important, but minimise the impact. Its normal to see players with knee problems. Part of the hazard.

Yeah right, but wouldn't you wanna minimize the problem if there are other forms of exercise out there that gets you the same amount of benefit? :p

Totally agree, going to the gym is a good alternative to minimize the impact. Slow weight squat shouls help as well. or anything that puts the pressure on the thigh with minimum impact.

Keep this in mind: badminton footwork is anaerobic not aerobic, so don't do endurance running for practice. Do drills on the court in quick explosive bursts.

1. Get fit = less weight fat ratio.
2. build up quadriceps n calves strength
3. tone yr body to reduce body fat to minimum(look up body of LD or Usain bolt)
4. plyometrics
In the order given.plyometrics without the others might lead to injury

IMHO, I don't think all this working out/conditioning is as important.
Sure, you're not exactly ripped, but you're not at an unhealthy weight either, so that should be fine. They WOULD make a difference at the professional level, but...

I'm going to assume you're not at the professional level yet (pardon me if I'm wrong...haha), and my piece of advice is this: instead of focusing on increasing fitness and strength, I would focus on improving my footwork. Find someone that can teach proper footwork, and do footwork drills. Not only will you be able to improve your footwork technique, you will also strengthen the muscles that you would normally use in a badminton footwork at the same time just by doing the footwork drills in short, intense bursts (because that's what badminton footwork is anyway). Two birds with one stone, big time.

Hope that helps.

so this isn't advised?
frog leaps looks like it trains explosiveness... which is useful for badminton?

what can you say about squat thrusts? is this okay to do?

i think you can also do sprints so that you can be light at your feet.. this can also be included in interval training so to be light on your feet. and i also agree with improving your footwork. maybe doing shuttle runs or proper shadow play.

i'm 70kg and my height is less than 170cm. trust me, my coach says weight is only in the mind. though he still encourages me to lose weight but with constant footwork training, my reaction time is being cut little by little thus making me reach the shuttlecock earlier.

Frog leaps aren't recommended if you want to stay healthy. It can hurt your knee alot. Also, I'm not sure where I read this, but it also negatively affects your back. Anyways, do some research and you should be able to find out.
