practice make perfect, get a friend to continuously feed you high serves for continuous jump smashes. Make sure you got lots of birds so it won't be interupted.

Yes I have difficulty timing jump smashes when I'm tired, because I don't jump as high as I intend. I think the best way is to practice against high clears, and start with only half jumps, gradually increasing how high you jump until you do 90% effort jumps. I wouldn't recommend jumping as high as you can because you'll lose your balance lol.

well, it might not help a lot of people, but before the match, i shadow the shot, and look for the lowest angle(i.e just past the tape of the net) at the back of the court, and adjust my shots acording to my results, the closer you are to the net, the more steeper you need to hit it etc.

practice. after you have master the regular smash. jumpsmash is mostly about timing. and we can talk and talk and talk abuot how to improve timing, the only way to actually get it is to go out and practice.

it took me around 2 weeks of solid practice to get the jumpsmash timing.

a common problem i've seen is timing the initiation of the stroke at the top of the jump. this is especially so when practising the movement without a bird. it seems that people like to hang in the air for a moment before they swing.

What should happen instead is that contact should be made at the top. The intention of the jump smash, after all, is to increase the contact height. What this means technique wise is starting the stroking motion while still moving upwards.

Interesting thread. I asked this before but the reply I got was - practice practice. Afterall, who doesn't know practice makes perfect.

Anyway, to all the successful jumpsmashers, can we list some aspects of jumpsmash that most beginners of jsmash seem to have trouble with? Example

1. Timing - When to take off from the ground in relation to the flight of the shuttle

2. Contact angle?
3. Body position wrt shuttle

etc etc...

From these common struggles, Jinky and many others out there can focus earlier on the potential difficulties they may have to pay more attention to during their PRACTICE.

Timing... definitely. Polish your "tip-toe" smash before you start learning "feet-off-the-ground" smash.

Playing volleyball would help. Jump smashing in volleyball might be a little less difficult, coz you're hitting the ball with your hand, easier to time the impact. In badminton it's more difficult, coz you have to time the drop of the shuttle as well as the swing of your racket.

One way would be to start lifting your feet off the ground when you warm up (hitting high clears) with your partner. That way you learn to swing your shoulder, which should be a very smooth follow-through movement. Then get your partner to feed high clears at you. Start by trying to lift your feet off the ground a bit when you smash (just like when you hit high clears), get a feel of the swing and timing, then try jumping.

Maybe you can do it with a small jump first (so that you're close to the usual smashing height) and then move up? Practice is really the best course of action.

Perfect timing come from practising.
Also, one need to have the ability to adjust when come to different speed/brand of shuttlecocks as they can drop faster/slower than others.

i think one of the most important things required for a jump smash is being able to get the feel of the bird. I remember one of the most important things i was taught by my coach was being able to feel the bird. For example being able to know when the bird is at it's highest peak, and being able to understand/see the speed at which the bird is moving then being able to match that speed with your jump. After that you have to be able to feel how your racket should make contact with the bird to make the best declining angle and to make it move as fast as it can.
