As there are a few threads about calories and hunger, i would like to tell you my story.

I am one of those fanatics that play at least 3 times a week. Sometimes, up to 4 times a week. On Mons, i would play about 4 hours and on Weds, i would play about 3 hours. On Fris, again, i would play about 4 hours.

When i first started, my weight was 73kgs but i not weigh 78kgs!

My problem is that not only my badminton skills improved but also my appetite! I now eat big meals and snack continuosly! :o

I thought badminton could help me to lose weight. Do you have the same problem? or Anyone has been successful in losing weight?

I'd go off bodyfat rather than weight. As Tony says, a cubic inch of muscles weighs more than one of fat. Increased appetite is completely normal - your body is using more energy than usual after all!

if you are trying to lose weight, don't snack more, eat less but more times so your body is constantly replenishing but not over-eating if you do feel the need to eat. also when you eat, eat slowly. it helps you feel your food level. i understand from my experience that i get really hungry after sports and i just eat and eat and suddenly i notice i'm stuffed. so eating slow will let you know when to stop eating. the other thing is ur muscles might be increasing. i gained a few lbs before i start losing... err... i still haven't lost enuff. i gotta work on my eating habits =P

just imagine if you didn't play badminton and eat the same amount, you will have weight 90kg!

seriously though, i think yes it is possible to lose weight via badminton, it will be less effective than other more purely aerobic sports like swimming/cycling/running, but it can be made to work. but as you have probably realized, it will involve more discipline in your diet as well. try to eat as much as you did before you started, and especially after the evening badminton sessions, eating late night snack can make you gain weight very fast.

I still reckon it's pretty hard to lose weight playing badminton unless you're quite heavy to begin with, because I don't believe badminton is very aerobic. However you will gain muscle in your legs, so it's not suprising for someone to gain a few kgs!

After 10 years not playing, getting married and not doing any sport etc etc I weighed in at 129kilos. I now weigh 98kilos after 1 year.

I eat reguarly, I am very strong in the legs and torso. I can run 2.5ks in 12 mins on sand. And Im right into fitness.

The more you exercise, the more you eat, but you must be careful about what foods you eat in terms of calories, fats, carbs etc.

I use to play 4-5 times a week. I went from 77kg to 65kg. I was pretty chubby back then! Now I only play 3 times a week. Hovering at 65kg no matter what I eat.

I play a lot of singles now since I lost weight and I can move around the court :P

Hi I'm in France and hadn't played badminton for around 20 years (I'm 39 years old now). I weighed 85 kilos in september when I started playing badminton again. I started playing once a week, then two, then thrice a week from january onwards. I had to stop early May due to an ankle bone fracture (the Aircast is coming off in two weeks from now) and I'll be able to play probably in september.

Just to say that eating normal food (no special diet stuff) I now weigh 74 kilos (had to change my trousers, none of them fit me now !) Lost a lot of fat around the waist and probably some water weight involved too !

Thanks to you badminton !

Sport keeps fit, nothing else.

I put on weight from 65kg up to 75kg in 2 years of badminton playing, and just being satisfied with that.

Like others already pointed out, you are building more muscule than before.

I think it's really depends on how is your condition to begin with (before start to play seriously):

1. Skinny: heavier and stronger and healthier

2. In decent shape: Not too much change, as your just "maintenan" the shape

3. Lots of fat: lighter and skinner, as you reduce the "volume" (fat) and weight "extra fat - muscle". I can confirm this, as I was very errr.... :D

I've never lost weight; I'm still growing. I'd say that my muscle mass increased and my fat mass decreased. I'm still really slim though, at 124lbs, and 5'9.5''

i am worried now!!!:D i did take up badminton again for two reasons, one is because i love it and the other is because i want some 30 minutes per session, 3 times a week exercise, which i now have. but now i realize that indeed, my appetite is bigger than before. i haven't weigh myself in a long while so i dont know whether i lost weight or not. i feel lighter and less fatigued than before but i am worried that due to the increased appetite i might gain instead of losing weight! arrrgggghhhhh :) well at least i still have the love of the game.

Badminton isn't so effective in weight loss in my experience. It's still aerobic exercise, largely---it'll exercise your heart and lungs more than your skeletal muscles. Over the years I've played I can tell it's not responsible for my weight loss. I lost weight by lifting weights (anaerobic exercise) and eating more sensibly. What was once a 165 lb. body gradually weighed as low as 155 lb.

Still, badminton is a good way of maintaining your weight. I've foregone the gym due to the volume of my work, but I still get to play badminton at least twice a week and my weight still hovers at 158 lb.

I used to sit down and wait in between games but i now started jogging around the hall until it's time for my next game.

I hope this will inject more cardio activities in my badminton.

Frankly speaking, i agree with a few people here that badminton is not the ideal sport if ones intention is to lose weight. Infact, i have seen many "plum" players playing badminton for ages and still have not lost weight! (ie, me :D)

The 2 hours following intense exercise is the most crucial. In order to gain weight, one should eat during this period e.g. to bulk up on muscle, load up on protein within 2 hours after a weight-lifting session. To have the best chance of losing weight, avoid eating until after the 2 hours and then eat while watching what and how much you eat according to the advice others have given earlier in this thread.

You want to lose fat not muscle! If you don't eat, you will not only lose fat but muscle. Since only muscle burn energy, the less muscle you have, the less energy you will burn. You will then have to excerise more or eat less to avoid weight gain. This will then become a vicious cycle and eventually you will end up tired, weak, hungry and fat!:(

If you think this hard to believe, don't be. It is a well kept secret that make owners of sliming centres millionaires! Why do you think their customers keep on coming back?:D

If you think this hard to believe, don't be. It is a well kept secret that make owners of sliming centres millionaires! Why do you think their customers keep on coming back?:D

I was just trying to highlight one of the main points. Perhaps I oversimplified my summary. Of course it won't be as simple as that but the body will burn fat before burning muscle. There is no one-size-fits-all formula because the biological makeup for each person is different. For example, it's normal to be ravenous after exercise but simply "stuffing oneself until full" means the body can simply replace all required energy from food intake and have no need to burn existing fat or anything else and it's also possible for one to overeat because there is a delay between the time the stomach is filled and the brain realizes it's time to signal a stop (particular when consuming food loaded with MSG :D). Based on this it's fully possible for some people to gain non-muscle weight (e.g. fat) despite exercising!

Consequently, it's up to each person to find out what works best for him/her. The individual's current % body fat, fat-muscle ratio, ratio between types of muscles, metabolic rate, age, gender, intensity/type/duration of exercise and other things, to some extent could affect the required diet (when to eat, how much to eat, what to eat and so on)... and this may need tweaking as the individual progresses.

For reference there are 2 kinds of fat, visible (external) and invisible (internal) so it's not safe for a person to assume that as long as they remain slim, all weight gain is simply muscle.

I am simply sharing my experience and my "belief" (method) has led me to lose 20 lbs. I feel lighter and stronger. In badminton, I'm faster and my knees feel much less strained. Perhaps my "belief" is not 100% correct and I could do better and perhaps there are trade-offs that I haven't fully realized but I've found something that at least gave me some satisfactory results.

Also, slightly off-topic, if we build the wrong kind of muscles (less useful for badminton), it'll just be extra weight to carry around the court, don't you think? Let's be careful about these things. :)

When I went back to badminton, I weighed 185 lbs. After 3 months of playing, I went down to 140 lbs. I played everyday - 45 minutes in the morning and about 2 hours in the afternoon/evening. I also played Saturdays and Sundays about 8 hours. I often got stiff because of dehydration and fatigue. I cramped all over - legs, body, abdomen.

My eating habits did not change, except for the intake of sugar through soft drinks or soda. I drank water instead. I also did not drink beer anymore that often.

After 6 months of playing, I went down to as low as 135 lbs. I was so skinny. My face was almost skin and bones only. But, my stamina increased. I could climb about 17 to 18 floors and my heartbeat did not change nor my breath rate. After my annual physical exam, after ECG, I had a basal heartrate of 48. The doc called it bradycardia. It usually is the condition of athletes.

After 4 years of intense playing, I stopped playing this regularly because my wife said she wouldn't want me to look like an old man. I had to make myself look fat. I drank beer on a regular basis. After 3 months, I went back to 160 lbs. I only played once a week and about 1 hour.

Now, I have to maintain 150 lbs. I would play with real high intensity but I would drink beer afterwards - 4 - 5 bottles. If I don't drink beer, my weight would surely slide down. I tried it and after 1 week of playing, it slid down to 140 lbs.

This may seem unbelievable, but, it really happened.

I could also list the other benefits that I got from playing badminton. Maybe I'll do it in some other thread.

nay, don't need to play that many to lost weight.
I think its the eating and eating pattern.
I do exercise everyday now, but then I change my meal too.
I eat less junk food. For me, i think mindset and goal are the most important (at least for me).
Last month, I meet up this guy who I know from last year
he lost 35kg since last year, though I never play with him last year but i seen him playing.
last month meet up with him and play games. omg.. he is just like a totally different person and literally beat almost everyone.
that sorta spark the fire again for me to go more serious in badminton, so I set my mind and goal to it and just so happen lost weight is one in the agenda too :). so end of day i think if you want to lost weight, put a goal and reason why you want to lost weight, it might motivate you. Good luck :)

dont eat big meal after exercise... it helps if u drink electrolyte.. taking a full cup or two of water before any meal helps too.

ko - who lost 35?...

generally losing weight is not that hard... keeping up with healthy lifestyle is harder especially with changing working schedule, exercise, etc2. find something or sm1 who can motivates you helps in the long run.

Your description makes me think of Lee Chong Wei. He is too skinny! :p

If there’s a foundation for fat donation just like blood and kidney donation supported by company like Lux & Castrol will solve this problem and I guess even Lee Chong Wei will be very pleased. But I guess there will be a long queue from either side, the thin and the fat queuing line ,need a courtesy of a cartoonist, Roberto Mangosi to illustrate it from his drawing of that scenario. I often was on the verge of blacking out when I used to play every day for 2 - 3 hours. But when I lost weight, I didn't feel tired anymore, even after playing a lot for 3 hours. I guess, it was a gradual return to my previous very active life of playing other sports like basketball, volleyball, table tennis and tennis. However, this time, it was badminton and only badminton.

To everyone's surprise also, I smoke 2 packs in 3 days - which I hope nobody will imitate. But, it usually took me a short time to recover from an intense match. I was very strong. I ate a lot and drank water a lot and also hydrated myself well. I didn't do drugs. I only took paracetamol when my body ached really.

Now, it isn't like this anymore. I can still play for long hours continuously. But, I need to eat a lot and drink some bottles of beer so that my weight will not go down. I could go back to my thin self, but my wife wouldn't like it.

I only took paracetamol when my body ached really.
..very interesting indeed, bad_tensioner. Your metabolism must've been pretty good then..

I quit smoking three years ago and i hope you will too one day. It's not that difficult. I notice the benefits right away and words cannot describe how much i thank god till today to give me the determination to quit this very bad habit.

I rather be fat than to smoke again.:D

Kamen - Wish I didn't have to mention the smoking habit, but, I had to. Maybe I'll gain more weight if I do stop smoking because I'll be eating much, much more than I am right now. Food really tastes so good when I don't smok for some time.

ctjcad - I think it's really my metabolism. If I don't play, I really get fat. If I play a lot, I really get thin.
