Check out this Boston Globe article I just found in
http://www.boston.com/sports/other_sports/articles/2007/05/05/badminton_its_quite_a_racket/

It's quite a racket
By: Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff

To many people, badminton is considered a sport best played in the backyard during a neighborhood barbecue. But to others, it's a sport that requires superior hand-eye coordination, cardiovascular fitness, and intelligence.

Yesterday at MIT, some 200 competitors in the latter group gathered for the 11th annual Boston Open Badminton Tournament, the largest field ever for the event.

Two of those who will be playing in the junior singles, doubles, and mixed doubles are 15-year-old twins Jenn and Allison Bachner of Marblehead. The freshmen at Marblehead High School play out of the town's youth badminton program. They are coached by Melinda Keszthelyi of Hungary, who will also be playing in the Open.

The tournament committee had hoped to have former Olympians headline the event, but instead there will be some hopefuls who are vying for a spot on the United States team for the 2008 Games in Beijing -- Bob Malaythong, Eric Go, Raju Rai, and Jennifer Coleman.

''It's the biggest tournament of the East Coast,'' said Keszthelyi. ''There are five regional classics plus the Nationals. Because it's $17,000 , everyone comes here. The only higher prize money is the US Open in August in Los Angeles and [last year] that was $25,000. This year, we have a lot of international players, which is great.''

The game is especially prevalent on the West Coast, and Keszthelyi said it's the most popular sport in Asia.

''Most of the top players come from the countries of China, Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia,'' she said. ''And in Europe, it's maybe Denmark. Everybody else is below them.''

Keszthelyi competed on the national team in Hungary, where [I]''the competition level is very good but because of a lack of facilities it's very hard to rent courts.''

She believes it's an up-and-coming sport in America.

''In 2005, the men's doubles team won the world championships,'' she said. ''That was a very important step for US badminton. We always qualified one or two players for the Olympics but it was very hard.''

After all, all I can say is: What an Impressive Lady Mona Santoso is!!!!!!

Final result:

XD: Mona/Chandra
LS: Johanna
MS: Mike Beres
WD: Angie/Mona
MD: Halim/Bob

XD - Chandra made a big difference. He played really well.
LS - Mona's doulbe attacking style didn't work here.
MS - Mike is very very steady. I only counted 6 unforced error from him. Raju made a lot of those.
WD - match of the day.
MD - The MA pair was not at the same level of Halim/Bob. However, they did put up a good fight.

Too bad WS wasn't as exciting as expected, wondering if Mona really played seriously against JH. Lee..... =)
And... Lili Zhou seemed not that intested in defending her champion title:eek:

Hey ctjcad -- was that you I met on top of the OCBC bleachers at Adult Nationals? If it was, you were recording with your digital camera/camcorder.

I do have some photos from Adult Nationals and 2007 Boston Open, but don't know what I'll do with them yet. I don't have much time to process the photos. I can either have my friend David (Bay Area Open) put them up on his photos.bayareaopen.org site, or talk to Kwun about his www.16feathers.com (http://www.16feathers.com) site again... Any interest?

Here's a photo of me sitting next to the Women Champions -- maybe they can take me out to dinner some time :) Yes -- very good time!

Wayne, nice pic!

processing photos takes a very long time, it is possible to spend as much time processing photos as taking them!

if you got some good ones, feel free to post them here. we will probably be closing the sale section of 16feathers.com in the near future, we are paying more money to run the site than we have income. the site will keep running with some nice photos we took for others to enjoy, but not much more than that.

I probably won't be sharing videos for a few reasons. One is that I recorded in HDV (High Definition) format and don't know how to convert to DVD or lower resolution yet...

I also don't have much time to process the video. Any volunteers with HDV experience (in the Bay Area)?

The other reason is that the Boston Open rented a bunch of camcorders to produce their own retail DVDs -- the profit from the sales of those DVDs help support the next Boston Open. I wouldn't want to hurt their sales...

Lastly, I spent time taking photographs as well, so I missed some of the play by not "unpausing" after breaks...

Thats my initial thoughts...

Wayne, just a few comments from me, if you don't mind..;)

Re your 1st reason, personally, i haven't converted an HDV file to a standard DV format yet. However, i have done a similar compression from a regular DV format(Mini-DV). As an example, if you haven't noticed in one of the 2007 Tournament's sub-forum, there's a thread titled 2007 U.S. Nationals. I have some links to some videos, which i had compressed and uploaded to Google, in one of the posts.
I would assume you are using one of the Sony HDV camcorder?? And you have a HDV tape. If so, in order for you to convert/compress the HDV format, you'd have to import the file from your camcorder using a firewire cable. I would guess your camcorder should have some features which will allow you to import the HDV files. Once you've imported the files to your computer, from there you can then edit or compress/convert the files into DVD or lower resolution format file(ie. mpeg, mpeg2, wmv)--->roughly similar process as compressing from DV format to lower resolution formats..;)
Anyways, if you want more info about this, you can go to:
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=758918 or
www.videohelp.com........tons of help there..;)

Re your 2nd reason, to be frank with you, yes, the whole process will be quite time consuming, which include the uploading of the videos..Depending on the size of the file you are uploading and your connection speed, the uploading process should be either a breeze or a "pain"..:p

Re your 3rd reason, yes, i can understand that..

Re your last reason, yes, i can understand that too...

jessica's footwork is very good, she was on the Fujian provincial training team when she was in China. She won a couple of national collegiate champs (B league, no pros) when she attended Jimei University where she received daily pro training.

i dont think she played singles this year, she paired up with Hsin-I Lu from Harvard for womens doubles, Hsin-I is actually as good as Jessica but she is just kinda loosy nowadays. shes from taiwan and competed competitively back in high school and college.

Jessica used to be our coach (Boston U). I used to be able to beat her but prolly not anymore after she picked up her training with the daphne chang gang.

i think her weak point is her endurance and power, and sometimes her mental strength is questionable as well. she lost to caroline anderson at the Boston invitational tournament. Caroline anderson is not supposed to be at the same level as jessica, BU's first lady's player Lily Fan(lili Zhou's partner at Boston Open) actually defeated caroline at the 2006 bay state game in both singles and doubles (jessica didnt play). and jessica can beat lily very easily in singles, supposely.
