Did quick calculations of the MD world rankings on coming Thursday ...
Cai/Fu will stay in No.1 spot, of course. Surprisingly, JJS/LYD who didn't play in Singapore SS will move one rung up to No.2. Apparently, current No.2 JE/MLH's 2nd round defeat have done a lot of damage... they will drops to No.5. Tony/Candra takes over No.3 while Markis/Setiawan will stick to No.4, so are CTF/LWW (No.6), KKK/TBH (No.7), Sukmawan/Eng Hian (No.8) and LJJ/HJM (No.9). HK's Njoto/Wiratama will move up to No.10 by knocking Blair/Clark off.

That's because JE/MLH and JJS/LYD's ranking points are very close right now. JE/MLH will lose 7700 points nett on Thursday, i.e., they earn 3600 for their 2nd round appearance in SO but lose 6997 (Thomas Cup 06 which will be expired by Thursday) and 4400 (last year's SO).

Women's Doubles
Zhang Yawen & Wei Yili (China) beat Zhao Tingting & Yang Wei (China)
10-21, 21-19, 21-18 (55 minutes)
As usual, a very sour-looking match.
Chinese players are expressly forbidden to smile or be cheerful during competition.
Women's Singles
Zhang Ning (China) beat Xie Xingfang (China)
21-18, 19-21, 21-3 (one hour)
Experience triumphs over long-legs... one of the greatest WS matches ever.
Zhang Ning is far from retirement.
Lin Dan lost when Xie Xingfang watched. Xie Xingfang lost when Lin Dan watched.
Maybe they should keep away from each other's matches.
Mixed Doubles
Flandy Limpele & Vita Marissa (Indonesia) beat Sudket Prapakamol & Saralee Thoungthongkam (Thailand)
21-14, 21-13 (27 minutes)
Sudket would have fared better playing alone. Saralee ought to be shot at the first available opportunity. Else she will ruin Thailand's chances at the Indonesian Open.
Men's Singles
Boonsak Ponsana (Thailand) beat Chen Yu
21-17, 21-14 (36 minutes)
Boonsak had to prove that his victory against Lin Dan was no luck.
Chen Yu shows again that he is weak in the backhand back corner.
Men's Doubles
Cai Yun & Fu Haifeng (China) beat Tan Fook Choong & Lee Wan Wah (Malaysia)
16-21, 24-22, 21-18 (1 hour, 9 minutes)
Never-say-die attitude beats baleful-coach-at-the-sidelines strategy.
After they lost two match points in the 2nd game, Choong and Lee didn't deserve to win anymore.
Heard that Malaysia's coach Rexy Mainaky just bought a gun and two bullets.

Congrats to Boonsak and Cai/Fu.
Boonsak was really exemplary in this tournament. Chen Yu had no idea at all how to counter him.
It was a great MD battle between Cai/Fu and Choong/Lee. You could say it was a tale of missed chances, but the longer the battle gets, it was always going to play into Cai/Fu's hands. Great effort and spirit too from Choong/Lee, unfortunately with lack of energy and speed at the tailend, comes mistakes. Goes to show that even in pt per rally format, the comeback trail is still open.
Cai/Fu have improved their drive game (forcing MAS pair to lift more), and their defences held better after some changes to their defensive formation. It must be a relief winning a tournament after having missed many times since their World Championship victory.

cai/fu looked really fast... they really improved their speed and cai yun also improved big time... they beat CTF/LWW in the same fashion when they also beat TG/CW... their opponents have the chance to take away the second game yet they can't close it... in the third set, obviously, the game will belong to the younger and more energized pair...

What i think of aviva 2007
men's singles: boonsak was hot. chen yu has no answers :)
Mixed doubles : sara lee let everyone down
men's doubles: Most exciting match i've seen for a long time. the chinese got a little demoralised in the first 2 games when their strong smashes seemed to be easily returned by the malaysians. i think Fu needs more smash placement/deception instead of relying on brute force :) but well, cai/fu always does magic at the tightest moments...
women doubles: zhang yawen's double-leg jump-smashes were an absolute pleasure to watch
Women's singles: i've never seen XXF crumble like that. Even lin dan would find it hard to beat her 21-3.....lol
OVerall, aviva 2007 was great and pleasurable to watch......except for some bad line calls during gade v chenyu match, as well as cai/fu vs gunawan/candra....we didn't even get a good camera angle :( Well.....lookin forward to s'pore open next year! :D:D

I missed the first match and the first set of the women's singles.
Anyway, I wasn't really paying that much attention to the women's singles matches. Zhang Ning could have sealed the second set when she was leading 19-17, only for Xie Xingfang to grab the last 4 points of the second set. From then on, it was a one-sided affair, with Zhang Ning taking the glory 21-3 in the rubber set.
The mixed doubles was also one-sided surprisingly, most notably being Saralee's countless unforced errors in front of the net. The INA pair won it comfortably and it must be a relief for PBSI since this represents INA's first title in the Super Series. Singapore must be a good hunting ground for Flandy Limpele as he has already won two titles in a row, men's doubles last year and mixed doubles this year.
Boonsak Ponsana also surprised everyone in the stadium by playing an attractive and aggresive game. We were mesmerized by his numerous cross-court smashes which Chen Yu simply had no answers to. At the end, Boonsak was quite comfortable in his first major win of his career, the Super Series title. Considering that the top 28 ranked men singles players are competing in Singapore this week, it really is a miracle that Boonsak eventually took the title.
The last match of the day was always going to be the most entertaining and thrilling one. The MAS pair was quick to establish a quick lead in the first set and they took it 21-16 quite easily. The second set was tight and close till the end. Choong/Lee had two match points, only to surrender the set 22-24. What a waste indeed. They were trailing 1-4 point when they established another huge lead at 15-8. At this moment, they started the crumble. The lead shrank to 18-15 very quickly and that represented their last point in the match. Fu/Cai dominated the last few points and took the match 21-18. It was another suicidal collapse by the veteran MAS pair and Rexy must be fuming at them

I was there right smack in the stadium watching all the matches and I was cheering hard for them, the most exciting match that was on today was definetely the men's doubles!

Congratulation to Boonsak!! Good to see a talented player like him finally get his big break after years of trying hard to win a title. He is too good for Chen Yu today. Alttough Chen Yu also played well today, he has no answer to Boonsak attack and deceptive strokes. Boonsak is so fast and agile on court today. Fantastic court coverage and he altered his defence and attack superbly. Simply fantastic!!
As for Lee/Chong, it was a pity they missed the chance but they played very well!! They fought their heart out before they went down. They have shown that they can still challenge titles but they still need to tighten their grip at crucial moments. In fact, they dominated the game most of the time. Skill wise they have an upper hand against the Chinese pair. Chinese pair is fit and more focus. They are very determine and has superb mental strength. They deserve the title.
Lee/Chong won ABC and went into final in SO and they played so well. They deserve applauses and encouragements from Malaysian Fans not negative critics( constructive ctritics is alright). I am a die hard fan of Malaysian badminton team. I always think if we love to see them win we should voise constructive critics but lets not throw negative muds on the players.
I think if they meet Fu/Chai again in IO or any other tournaments Lee/chong will still have an upper hand. If they can improve their focus like they have shown in ABC, Fu/Chai will not be able to escape defeat. The fact is, every body can see that Fu/Chai won by "escaping defeat" but not dominating their opponents like a champion. Nevertheless, a win is a win. This is a fact we must accept. And lets hope Fu/Chai ,kkk/Tan and other Malaysian pairs try harder next time. Malaysian men double is on the rise, every body can see this fact. They will win more title for sure, just a matter of time.
Just spoken with Rexy a while ago. He was not fuming with CTF/LWW and i disagree with those who said they lost focus and crumble under pressure. In fact they played well.. just that Fu/Cai changed strategy.. and keep forcing CTF and Wan wah into playing flat drives and jabs.. Chinese is faster in that terms and they prevail.

It's strange too see Hafiz still hovering in top 10 even after lousy performance one after another, it shows how inconsistent the ranking system has been. As for the 4 top Chinese occupying the top spots, does it really matter? Even when Chen Yu was out of top 10, he was still capable of beating any of the top player! It's the "form" of the player that is going to make the difference. Boonsak peaked at the right moment and won the Singapore Open. Realisticly, only Lin Dan is hard to beat among the top 10 due to his consistency, the rest really depending on "full moon" or "half moon", "high tide" or "low tide" :D

If we look at his achievements in the past whole year where he earned points, we could tell his ranking is justifiable ... He was the winner of the 4* Philippine Open 06, semi-finalist of the Korea SS 07 and the 3* Thailand Open 06, and quarter-finalist of 7* WC 06, 5* Japan Open 06 and 4* Macau Open 06. He was also a quarter-finalist in last year's 5* Singapore Open (points no longer counted).
Besides, everybody else who ranks below him are either consistently ... unimpressive (e.g., Shoji Sato, Andrew Smith, Sony Kuncoro [used to be a promising player but now lousier than Hafiz], Tsuen Seng, Sung Hwan, Roslin, ...) or has retired (Hyun-Il?). Yes, Hafiz does struggle when he plays higher ranked shuttlers but he usually has no problem in beating those ranked below him (except for Taufik and Sony, and even Roslin to a lesser extent. who might give him some troubles).
So, Hafiz is still among top-10 due to the lack of strong and consistently strong MS players (i.e., only top-8 players are worth mentioned).

...IMO, the MAS pair should've closed & won the 2nd set. They had 2 match points, literally, on their feet.;)
About fatigue and age, yes i would somewhat concur with pjswift. IMO, they are somewhat inter-related; to an extent mental fatigue could also be a factor which probably affected the veteran MAS pair's play towards the latter part of the match..Age is part of the factor, but it's arguably one of the important reason..Consider also, MD is essentially a game of power & speed. And when similar/same level skilled players are matched up, other factors such as speed, reflex/reaction time, stamina and power must be taken into consideration, esp. when a match goes longer. No matter how much experience a veteran pair has over a younger pair, *with similar/same level skills*, the body will be affected. And when that happens, usually the younger ones will have a slight advantage. Also, there must be a reason why FHF&CY were able to have that extra energy @ the end of the 2nd set & esp. the second half of the 3rd set.

..before i make a few comments, just want to say thanks to all BC members who actually watched the matches live and gave their POVs(point-of-views) afterwards. Watching them live is definitely different than us reading the forum or watching it on webcast.
Back to the Finals day itself. Well, what can i say, but just 2 words to describe it: VERY DRAMATIC.
There weren't any big upsets, but the matches themselves surely lived up to their expectations...
- We saw a wonderful MS match featuring 2 unexpected Finalists. Prior to the start of the S'pore Open, who would've thought Boonsak Ponsana and ChenYu would even make it to the Semis, let alone either one winning it all. But as we all witnessed, Boonsak really came in prepared and focused with the goal at hand. IMO, his biggest hurdle was his win over LD. And no, was i surprised by his win?? Not really, because i've seen him play before and he has that uncanny "flair". Add to that, he is very adept at net play; something that has been a staple of singles play. Will his good run of fortune continue at the upcoming Indo Open?? We shall wait and see..
- We also saw a pretty entertaining WS match between 2 compatriots, but unfortunately one of them had much more energy than what most of us thought. In the end ZN powered her way to victory. But they'll surely meet again and hope they can give us a bit more to enjoy.
- The XD and WD matches tried to showcase some entertainment, but it wasn't meant to be. Eventhough the WD match went to 3 sets, unfortunately it wasn't the case for the XD..
- Which brings us to the main event of the night which featured 2 in-form MD pairs. What a show & what entertainment!! Eventhough i haven't seen the match, but just following it online was definitely exhilarating. The final event definitely ended in a dramatic fashion and truly lived up to its billing!.. In a word, it was almost like dejavu(esp. the 1st & 2nd sets) to one of the previous night's MD match, but much better. Early on the MAS veterans showed glimpses of a possible upset in the 1st set, but remarkably the CHN pair absorbed the blows and buckled down in the 2nd set to force the deciding rubber set. Needless to say, the MAS fans must've felt as if they were riding in a roller coaster that seemed to never end. But unlike in the previous night's match, which involved the CHN pair, this time the MAS pair seemed to have more fight & energy esp. in the 3rd set. However, at the end, after having a 7 point lead in the final set, for some reason the veteran MAS pair seemed to lose their momentum..And after the CHN pair slowly make their way to tie the score, it seemed all the MAS pair's efforts were for nought. Stuck at 18, they saw their possible title fleet away while the CHN pair simply powered their way for their 1st title this yr...It was definitely a tough luck break for 1 pair, but truly a deserved title for the other pair...
So, as we bid adieu to this S'pore Open and welcome the next tourney(IO), from the many upsets and surprises, this S'pore Open has been a pleasant and very entertaining tourney....Let's hope for an encore in the upcoming Indo Open...
*Btw, thanks for all the M'sian fans who really made the forum "lively":D;) ..looking fw to more of the same this coming week and hope KKK&TBH can reach the Finals..;)

I don't agree with the comments that Choong/Lee collapsed, among the pairs in this tournament they were the only ones running full distance with Fu/Cai. But then again, Fu/Cai are not just World Champions for nothing, they are thinking players too and managed to change their strategies at crucial moments.
Choong/Lee's defences held up against direct attacks very well as expected, but their attacks started to have less potency the longer the game went, the Chinese were able to predict where they were going to smash. Compared with Koo/Tan, Choong/Lee had the stronger defence and smashes, but not as much attacking variety to keep the opponents guessing.
I salute both pairs for a very exciting match, worthy of the tournament, and so far the best MD SS final of all. One of the few times I don't mind MAS losing, must be getting old. And as Yannie said, even Cai mentioned how tiring and hard it was .....
Most importantly, Malaysian pairs have to take note of how far Fu/Cai have improved their flat drives. They were not so dominant during the All England final in March, now they can keep it flat and so fast, all they need to do now is to learn how to redirect it left and right like Koo/Tan.

i watched the MD final on webcast. Yes,prolly best MD match of the year so far. Powerful smashes from sides combined with great defenses. Even fu's 270 km/hr + smashes aren't slam dunk anymore. Some of the best defense on hard smashing seen so far. MAL was fast and hard on the first set. China trying to figure out what weak holes to punch thru. When MAL can't glinch the 2 set when they had the chance to, i kinda knew china was in for a comeback. China had to come thru with 2 comeback, in the 2nd and 3rd sets. I think china perserverance had won it for them.

Choong/Lee are is only pair we've seen so far that can defend Fu's brute smashes easily, even some of the half court smashes from Fu!

Oh! Even KKK/TBH, probably the only MD pair who has ever beaten Fu/Cai in their 3 consecutive playoffs (or a pair whom Fu/Cai has NEVER won to date) couldn't defend Fu's smashes?

Due to mental or atitude? that's a different discussion

I believe positioning and racquet head angle is the main key for a great defence, Razif/Jalani, Cheah/Yap, and Choong/Lee have mastered this very well that they can defend even most body attacks. Koo/Tan are not so good in this, Koo/Chan and Chan/Chew were better.
The Chinese are becoming better at this too, witness how they changed their defensive posture after the midgame interval in the 1st game, from then onwards it took longer for Choong/Lee to kill the shuttle. First time I was impressed with the Chinese defence and drive game since Li Yongbo/Tian Bingyi 15-20 years ago.
I hope this veteran pair (and Cai/Fu also) can recover fully before the expected rematch in INA Open q-finals. After that great battle, it would be an injustice for both pairs to be eliminated early before they had a chance to renew their rivalry.

TF-WW, after 15-9 lost their 'short game' (probably due to tiredness, their accuracy suffered with TF driving into the net most times), and feeling less confident they resorted to lobbying the ball (the chinese kept the ball low, wherever possible). This resulted in great smashes by the Chinese pair. CAI-FU were excellent in their smashes. They were good in keeping it tight, never allowing any scope for TF-WW to get at them (even the smashes offered to TF0-WW were difficult ones to execute).
To sum it up, TF-WW lost their way and could not recover whilst the Chinese were brilliant in their containment of the Malaysians in the last 6 minutes or so.

during the finals, CTF/LWW had powerful smashes and excellent defense. they only lost because of lack of stamina and mental strength. they can't sustain their powerful smashes in the rubber set and too confident during deuce in 2nd set. however, credits given to CTF/LWW for the excellent defense. FHF smashes does not look threatening to CTF/LWW. great job to Malaysians!

Agree, look like Fu/Cai have learn something from previous matches lost to Koo/Tan, they must be working very hard to over come their weakness, all this hard work probably because they want get themself ready for next meet with Koo/Tan.
For Choong/Lee, they certainly did a great job compare to Tony/Wajaya in SO.

Fu/Cai defense are getting better too. their drives have improved. KKK/TBH need to find other strategy or improve their themselves. Fu/Cai showed us that they are ready.
