View Full Version : Can Chong Wei bounce back?
Felicia_txh 05-08-2007, 12:43 AM Badminton: Chong Wei aims to bounce back in Indonesian Open
By RIZAL ABDULLAH
SINGAPORE: A first-round casualty in the just concluded Aviva Singapore Open, national number one Lee Chong Wei was still in high spirits when he left with his team-mates yesterday for the Indonesian Open, which begins in Jakarta tomorrow.
In five rounds of the inaugural Super Series this year, Chong Wei has not got past the quarter-finals.
The 25-year-old Penangite lost to Chinese players in the first three rounds of the Series – Bao Chunlai in the Malaysian Open; Chen Jin in the Korean Open; and Chen Yu in the All-England. In the Swiss Open, he was beaten by Singapore’s Ronald Susilo and in the Singapore Open, he crashed out against team-mate Mohd Hafiz Hashim.
In the Asian Championships (ABC), which was held before the Singapore Open, Chong Wei lost to Indonesian Taufik Hidayat.
Chong Wei received a lot of flak for his defeat by Hafiz but he is taking it all in his stride and looking forward to better fortunes in Jakarta.
“Winning and losing is part of the game. Players have highs and lows.
“We get praised when we emerge as the champion and get criticised when we lose. I have come to live with this,” he said.
“I am going through a lean spell but I am still the number one in the country. I am gearing towards the World Championships in KL in August. I have put behind me the defeat by Hafiz and I am fully focused on the Indonesian Open.
“I can't predict how far I will go. The Indonesian Open also offer ranking points for the Beijing Olympics next year and it has also drawn a tough field.”
Coach Misbun Sidek has faith in Chong Wei bouncing back.
“He is much faster on the court now. His fitness has also increased. It will be only a matter of time before he starts winning again,” said Misbun.
In Jakarta, Chong Wei is drawn to play against Denmark’s third-ranked player Joachim Persson in the first round. But he may face another opponent because Persson is injured and did not start in the Singapore Open. Hafiz, who was beaten by eventual champions Boonsak Ponsana in the second round of the Singapore Open, has a tough first-round opponent in Indonesian Simon Santoso.
X Ball 05-08-2007, 01:18 AM I have lost count the no. of times he had NOT gone past the Qtrs. But I think I will not have to feel lost anymore in the IO COZ he is going to blizzzzzzzz and fleezzzzz the competition !
I always like to give people the benefit of the doubt particularly if they said so themselves, and here, he said I am fully focused on the Indonesian Open. That is good enough for me !
JaCk™ 05-08-2007, 01:28 AM I heard many players said they will bounce back for the next tournament. but bear in mind, for every tournament, there is only one winner. LCW needs to pass through better players such as Lin Dan and Taufik before winning.

At least LCW past LD without play...:D :D :D but BCL/TH/CH are waiting...

Sure thing, nothing is meant to be easy. However, thanks to Boonsak, our guy LCW now thinks he can emulate that effort.
The Earth moves with patience !:D
Felicia_txh 05-08-2007, 01:38 AM I juz cant understand y everytime when he meets China player,he will lost!!  the most unbelieveable thing is he is beaten up by HH..He can win all the tournament b4 is juz because luck is on his side??
liying_0505 05-08-2007, 01:41 AM Give him some time....... Come on Chong Wei, we will support u always.... Jia you!!!!!
huangkwokhau 05-08-2007, 01:44 AM Come on guys..pls cheer him up..dont bash him...Poor LCW!!

cao ci dan 05-08-2007, 01:46 AM “He is much faster on the court now. His fitness has also increased. It will be only a matter of time before he starts winning again,”
:) All the best then!:crying: I miss LD vs LCW!!!
tjl_vanguard 05-08-2007, 02:32 AM i think he has regained his confidence but still IO isnt going to be easy!!!! its well-known as one of the toughest in the world grand prix and in this case: SUPER SERIES!!! :D but with the withdrawal of old foe, Lin Dan i think he has a chance but still it depends on himself... :D
Felicia_txh 05-08-2007, 02:39 AM He is the big brother,No.1 in Mas..Hope he really can bounce back n become an example to the youngs..
tjl_vanguard 05-08-2007, 02:42 AM :) All the best then!:crying: I miss LD vs LCW!!!
nah.. dun be sad.. it'll be back soon enough... :D
tjl_vanguard 05-08-2007, 02:44 AM He is the big brother,No.1 in Mas..Hope he really can bounce back n become an example to the youngs..
like i said... DUN WORRYY!!!!!!!! he'll be BACK!!!! :D
JaCk™ 05-08-2007, 02:56 AM I prefer to see LCW bounce back and stay at the top. I dont like to see Hafiz bounce back but drop back again painfully. Of course I support LCW all the way as long as he wants to win again.
vching 05-08-2007, 06:38 AM i have been dissapointed many times by lcw, but i still support him staunchly.
hope to see Malaysia winning a title in MS this year finally...
Dimplex 05-08-2007, 06:54 AM only time will tell. i hope for the sake of his fans and his career...he does indeed bounce back
JaCk™ 05-08-2007, 07:45 AM LCW managed to avoid Lin Dan in the coming IO. Chen Yu withdrew too. Hope he goes all the way. Taufik is waiting for LCW.
X Ball 05-08-2007, 07:56 AM Put it this way : his detention class is over. His 'ear squats' have taught him humility and got him to work harder.
Bring on Taufik, Boonsak, and Bao. No worries !
huangkwokhau 05-08-2007, 08:00 AM Remember that sony had been down also in the last 2 yrs after winning Bronze medal in Olympics..injured..lost...lost...now..he plays much better..not same level as LCW...lets see how far LCW can go this week...
nwy5633 05-08-2007, 08:38 AM wat on my mind is...
if LCW can't reach semi final of IO even tat there are no CHN threat or even BWF top 8 challenge...
then he may need to say goodbye for the 2007 WC!
maybe someone will say tat there is still Indonesian homeground-Simon..
but if u want to bounce back, u need to prove it to ppl!!!

i agree. SO and IO is some benchmark for us to see how LCW might perform in WC. we cannot expect LCW to win the WC suddenly without any Super Series title. he needs to win from now in order to gain confidence.
cooler 05-08-2007, 11:05 AM i see LCW as a quarter final specialist now.
bananaboy 05-08-2007, 11:25 AM i see LCW as a quarter final specialist now.
He was a quarter final specialist from Jan-Mar of 2007... The most consistent one ever, I may add:cool:
Recently, he had been to an all time low of a first round specialist... Swiss open + Singapore open(he should avoid any tournament that starts with the letter "s").
So, to answer the question of this thread... Yes, there is a chance that LCW can bounce back:p afterall, how hard is it to improve from a 1st round specialist since you only have to win 1 match in a tournament, especially when Malaysia usually sends out like 7+ MS players... LCW just have to wait for a 1st round match with the likes of KBH, then he almost definitly will make it to the 2nd round(eg. Indonesia open 07).:D:D:D
chibe_K 05-08-2007, 12:22 PM Bounce back to be a quarter finalist ? No doubt about it. LCW boleh !
Bounce back to be a semi finalist ? Likely on his best day.
Bounce back to be a finalist ? Very unlikely considering his mental strength is the weakest among TH, PG, LD, and CY. Plus, he has a coach who is still trying to run Windows Vista on Pentium I chips. Meaning using his old coaching techniques to compete against Generation X players ! It ain't going to work !
tjl_vanguard 05-08-2007, 08:26 PM Bounce back to be a quarter finalist ? No doubt about it. LCW boleh !

i think its Windows Vista with INtel 8080 chips.. ahahaks... :D
Darien 05-08-2007, 08:30 PM NO WAY WHATSOEVER for him to bounce back...

u might be rite, but he might go on and lose in later stages or surprisingly he might WIN! :D just don hope too much.. :D

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong (read it musically please) ! UnBeknown to you poor souls, he is now armed with the latest MACintosh ! As always, if you are blinded by bias, you will remain the same. :D
Misbun is no LYB, he does not rely on shouting at his players. He believes in the metaphor : "The bird will fly when it sprouts its wings!", meaning there is patience in every damn thing. For the years that BAM has given him independence, it is because he is able to convince them that his techniques work, e.g. Hafiz in the ALL-ENGLAND; WCH came 2nd in the World Championship; LCW rising to become Malaysia's No.1, and then KBH from obscurity. Live with it fellas, he is 'fair dinkum' (genuine)!
There are 'ups and downs' in anything. If LCW gets an inch closer to being good again, you will sitting up and singing his song again, and Misbun's (although I doubt you 'knockers' will).
I am a 'true blue' fan of LCW, Hafiz, WCH, YKB, and Misbun. At the end of the day, if they perform well I celebrate with pride but if they fail, I SUPPORT them (not criticise like a treacherous traitor !).

Read an article that says sports fan can change like the weather. The star player can hear 70,000 cheering voices if he does well - or 70,000 booing voices if he messes up. Sports figures easily fall from grace. Win countless titles but make one unfortunate mistake & you are condemned.

Just like INA fans....reported yesterday they Booed INA players ( Ade Chandra) when played against Nguyen...
When I went to see Badmitnon in china or thailand....I do not see their fands booed their own players...in INDO...I knew it happens...hope we can educate the fans a bit...some players are crying after being booed....like Mia Audina when she played for Netherland at Indo open...she lost right away ...she skipped one year and so scared to play in Indo...

Yeah I know. However, a true blue fan does not do that. I forgive my heroes if they try and still lose.

I wish you were right and I were wrong about LCW. I want to see him put on a show to stun the world as much as you do. Time will tell ! Only time will tell ! And most of all, lets also wish he cared enough to read this forum and proved me wrong....cheers :D
Felicia_txh 05-08-2007, 11:19 PM I don think he can prove to us in short time..I juz hope there is no more 'bad' surprise happen in IO!!

huangkwokhau 05-09-2007, 05:00 AM Simon vs LCW...I saw the data that simon beat LCW at Sea Games 2005 ( Philipines) so Simon -LCW ( 1-0)...
nwy5633 05-09-2007, 06:06 AM simon vs LCW?
normally it will be a win for simon due to his form nowadays..
since simon can beat LD , why can't he beat a underform LCW in his homeground??
so if the result go like this...
simon 2-0 LCW - CW is still in a worrying form but u alr familiar with tat..
simon 2-1 LCW - its a gud performance by LCW, a little improvement atleast..
LCW 2-1 simon- wow, CW really will bounce back now!
LCW 2-0 simon- FU-Yoh !! i can't believe on my own eyes...
purpledoi 05-09-2007, 08:32 AM Simon really is playing well now. Meanwhile LCW isn't what he was a year ago.
I really hope LCW can win...well, at least get to the semi's.
angelatby 05-09-2007, 09:45 AM My Goodness, i just realised LCW is having the EASIEST DRAW so far for Superseries, he must make it man :o All the Best, LCW .. . .. . .
ALWAYS~~~
Makkem_1 05-09-2007, 06:27 PM ... in the 2'nd round match with Santoso.
LCW has the heart and the guts to pull it off. Don't doubt the talent:D
One game at a time, man. No pressure, just do your thing and it will happen.
This guy just feels the responsibility too much. If he eases up on himself, he'll do well, [he is a different class to the likes of Ponsana.] He's put the work in and has the game.... it's just translating it into results, and thats only confidence.
Santoso is a really good opponent and will be a big test: he's young, hungry and confident and is playing well right now: the kind of game LCW needs... beating muppets won't give him confidence, he needs to go to work on the best!:D
jesminekia 05-09-2007, 07:02 PM Give him some time....... Come on Chong Wei, we will support u always.... Jia you!!!!!

Why do you want to be a LCW fan when you don't have confidence in him? 'So how?' fans pass him a lot of nervous energy; he does not need that. Why not think 'So what?' to feel better. The most important is he gives his best. But he beat Simon and the INA crowd, didn't he? He's the only non INA MS player to beat an INA player thus far before QF and Simon is no chicken. Other non INA players lost to INA, like KJ and KJ is tough!
X Ball 05-12-2007, 12:32 AM Chong Wei is all psyched up to win today from all reports. He is on a high, so if Chen Hong is feeling a bit off colour today, he would find LCW hard to handle.

ck1981 05-12-2007, 01:02 PM LCW is in the final because Chen Hong gave up the 2nd set. So should be safely said that LCW is not bounce back yet. He should double or triple his effort in order to beat the super Bao tomorrow.
ye333 05-12-2007, 04:12 PM I personally think LCW is faster than earlier this year. Also, why should CH give up? It seems to me CH cannot keep up with LCW's speed in the 2nd set. Also I don't think Bao played better than previously today. LCW is much faster and determined this time than he was during ABC, I think he could beat Taufik too this time if they met. Taufik has not recovered to his Asian Games form yet.

OneToughBirdie 05-12-2007, 05:39 PM We saw a much better LCW in MS SF, composed, calm, tactical, good defense and very fast, conditioning was super...much much better than he played in ABC and Swiss Open. Even though CH may not be the equal of LD or TH, nevertheless CH is a top 5-8 opponents and a great competition for LCW to get back into the game. Let's see how LCW does against BCL, should be a dandy! I sure hope LCW win...he needs it!:)

JaCk™ 05-13-2007, 12:01 AM from some replays, LCW did committed some fouls at the net but unnoticed by the umpire. chen hong saw it but does not complain seriously and he just looked at the umpire.

snasirin 05-13-2007, 04:05 AM They said LCW will not win ... and yet BCL lost to LCW in less than 15 minutes in the first set.
s1nn3r 05-13-2007, 07:37 AM this is called surprise. it is easy to reach the top but difficult to stay at top. therefore, it will get tougher for LCW at the next SS and LCW needs to work harder. this is a lesson for KKK/TBH.
Agreed! When u are the top... eveyone studies your games.. there will also be higher expectation of you thus resulting in more pressure.
Is the ability to sustain the pressure and maintain a clear mind that enable you to stay on top for a longer time.

pjswift 05-13-2007, 10:14 PM LD is 5% better than the best of the rest. You gotta be based on consistency, winning percentages, etc. However, on any day, when LD is off form or recovering from injury and his opponent peaks, upset can happen.
Disagree. We 'll see about that this year.
taufik-ist 05-13-2007, 10:25 PM misbun is better than Li mao in coaching LCW

Chong Wei played superbly against second seed Bao Chunlai to win 21-15, 21-16 in 35 minutes.
LEE Chong Wei ended his barren run in the international scene for almost a year in style by winning the Indonesia Open at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta yesterday.
Chong Wei, the joint fifth seed, played superbly against second seed Bao Chunlai of China to notch a 21-15, 21-16 win in 35 minutes.
Prior to Chong Wei’s triumph, Yong Hock Kin, in 1998, was the last Malaysian to capture the Indonesia Open.
It is evident that Chong Wei’s win over China’s Chen Hong, the former World No 1 and current World No 4, in the semi-finals, boosted his confidence as the Malaysian was all class in the final.
Chong Wei never allowed Chunlai to settle down, as he treated the crowd at the stadium to an exhilarating display of his attacking flair, especially, his deadly forehand cross-court smashes.
That was the kind of performance which Chong Wei is capable of, but so often failed to deliver. But not yesterday,
Chong Wei ended the contest in a manner that reflects his skills, when Chunlai failed to clear the former’s delicate net shot.
A delighted Chong Wei then jumped with joy and rushed off the court to hug his coach, Misbun Sidek.
The victory was Chong Wei’s first international success since his Malaysia Open success last June, and the US$20,000 (RM70,000) that comes with the Indonesia Open title was the biggest purse of his career.
Chong Wei, in a telephone interview, thanked Misbun and his family members for having faith in him during his struggle.
"I have gone through tough times for about eight months and I’m extremely pleased to have won the Indonesia Open.
"I must thank my coach. Misbun, who has really worked hard to raise my performance," said Chong Wei.
"I also thank my family members who have been very supportive when things were not going well for me.
"This victory is a massive boost to my confidence as people have always said it is very difficult to win the Indonesia Open and I’ve done it."
