Does anyone know the status of the new club that is supposed to open in Arcadia? Last I heard, it was scheduled to open in June 2007.
Thanks,

Tippi and Lee, the elderly couple who've been playing and managing the badminton play at McCambridge Park in Burbank for 50 years (he's 95 and still plays occasionally), mentioned this last Wednesday.
They said the guy behind it is the guy who owns the Hi-Qua company.
They thought it was scheduled to open in July and that there would be 14-16 courts.

Hey Dan, haven't seen you around the club in awhile.
I was there last night and some guys were talking about it. Now I hear it's supposed to be in Irwindale. Haven't checked the map, but I believe that's farther east than Arcadia.

...hmm, owner or the main distributor in California, if not the whole U.S.?? If he's the distributor then he's a well known gentleman in the Southern California badminton community.;)
Maybe this is the club which Master NGP mentioned a while ago, being close to the 605 & 10 fwy?!?!

Hello Sir, who's this? I haven't been at SGVBC because I hurt my back and have been busy with work as well.
My friend met with the owner of the new club and it will be in Arcadia. The planned opening date is late July. The owner is keeping a low profile, he doesn't want to say anything until everything is done so stay tuned.

I'm very pleased to hear a confirmation on the new club. Living here in Orlando has been such a drag....we just got a notice that as of July 31st we will be kicked out of the facility we are currently using. Thank goodness, that I'm in the process of moving back to the L.A. area....can't wait...the food, the weather, the badminton, poker....what more can a guy ask for?.......and on top of that I'll be making a lot more money.....can't wait. Advice to anyone living in L.A. is to never leave.....the rest of the country will bore you to death....even N.Y.C. Hopefully William, the owner of Hi Qua, will come through and open a world class facility.

Come on Dan, they know you are a spy for SGVBC so they locked the doors when they saw you coming.
i am confused. so there are two clubs opening up?
one of them being opened by the gentleman who also distribute hi-qua? is that the one that Dink went to spy on?
you know Dink, you can just kindly ask the gentleman for a visit before you go. bring your camera and see if you can take some photos for a sneak preview.
sounds very exciting. S. Cal is finally starting to catch up with N. Cal.

Here's the deal:
"Arcadia Badminton Club" (ABC: a badminton club in Arcadia, not sure what the exact name will be): is being opened by William and Chester of Hi-Qua. That's the club I went to see, not spy. This Club is based out of an existing warehouse, so it's built already. I believe they are just touching up the interior.
The owners of ABC have been quite hush-hush about everything. They do not want to reveal anything until it's etched in stone.
Los Angeles Badminton Club (LABC): is about 3 miles away from the Arcadia Badminton Club in El Monte. LABC is not built yet. It's in the process of being built. That is owned by Robert Kuah. I actually spoke to "Kuah" about leasing a storefront from him. However, again, LABC is not built yet. The foundation is not even built, it's still dirt.
So, ABC is 90-95% completed. LABC = 1-10% completed.

I stood on the proposed ABC surface and it was quite nice. The premium padding is thick and well cushioned and complements the tile nicely.
Of course I'd need to play on it to be certain but William stated he spent significant time researching the playing surface.

also, the lights...obviously hids, metal halides by the looks of it. Not the best lights because they burn your eyes the instant you look at them, but hopefully with the right placement between courts, rather than over them, they wont be a factor. Did i mention they're freaking bright!!!

Stop jumping to conclusions:
1) You don't know how "bright" the lights are going to be. No one will know until we play there.
2) "Research" the playing surface? You think they are going to change it, if by chance, you don't like it? :p
I say stop posting and questioning until ABC is actually complete.

I hope I'm wrong, but those look like the ones OCBC tried out and didn't like. If they are the same ones, it will indeed be a bit too bright. And the flooring looks like the ones they used at Smash City. Overall though, looks like a nice facility. Hopefully I'll be there for the grand openning. Can't wait to see and play there.

The proposed 17 courts is etched in stone. It will be the largest badminton facility in the U.S. at 17 courts. It's bigger than SGVBC, it also has an upstairs office area.
Not sure about the footage, if I had to guess: 30,000sf on the 1st floor and 5,000sf on the 2nd floor.

I don't know the exact height but you shouldn't have any problems hitting anything.
According to the BWF publication, if you were to bid on a world class tournament (say World Junior), the requirement for ceiling height is 12 meter or 39.37 feet, please refer to: http://badmintoninternational.net/newseditor/data/WJCh_20072008_BidDocs_Final.pdf
I suspect the warehouse ceiling height is similar to Smash City (which is less than 39.37 feet), in their case if the bird touches the ceiling it would be a fault unless when you are serving, it would be a let.

Anyway, the flooring is in and as you can see, they're just about done drawing the lines. The nets will be up by Friday.

..and yes, i'm sure you are, Dan..:D;)..Btw, i passed by the complex sometimes last week and took a quick drive by the building..From what i could see and imagine from the outside, i would say the place is nearly as big as OCBC, but bigger than SGVBC-I think this one is a bit more squarish in comparison to OCBC..At that time, I noticed the side door was opened but noticed the warehouse was already cleaned out(lights were dim). The front lobby was still pre-occupied by a few workers employee, though...
But overall, the new place looks mighty schweeeeeet!! Finally So-Cal, esp. San Gabriel baddie community, has a new facility:):D;)...I can't imagine a happier Master NGP to have a new baddie home..:D;)

sgvbc will definitely have some things to think about once abc opens, for one, cleaning up the gym and 2 CLEANING UP THE GYM.
A few people have been thinking "whats going to happen?" Hopefully the two gyms will drive each other to be the best gym, and in turn that will attract more attention and popularity to our sport. I find the only thing that sgvbc has over abc right now is hours of operation. dont get me wrong i enjoy playing at sgvbc as much as any one else maybe even more (im not a member and i shell out $7 each time i play there) but i really think abc is the kick in the pants sgvbc needs to "get their act together."

i was there on tuesday and saw quite a lot of people i normally see at sgvbc on tuesdays... didn't like how the lights were being overhead... but i do like the surface a lot.
i also hope that this will force sgvbc to improve the conditions at their facility because i really think a lot of people will switch over.
i think both clubs can survive independently of each other and i intend to play at both but will probably keep my membership at sgvbc for now.
anyways here's the another pic of the club but with people already playing:

Errrr...not exactly.
If you pay monthly:
ABC = $38/month
SGVBC = $33/month
If you pay for one year in advance:
ABC = $418/year, comes out to ~$34.83/month
SGVBC = $330/year, comes out to ~$27.50/month
Also, if you are 18 or younger, it's $308/year at ABC
You can get a group discount from ABC, if you sign up with a...group. Not sure what that is yet.
All else aside, yes, SGVBC is a better deal dollar for dollar. :)

Too lazy to check through all the postings here. The lighting looks good, but what are all those checkers on the floor? Is it like the tile flooring? I've never seen that before. I'm glad they are not opening with no permit. I would not want to be thrown out the door while I am having my awesome games!

On 9/18 Tuesday night. At City Hall of Arcadia. It took about 1.5 hours to finish our hearing. Luckily it was passed. Councilman emphasized the safety of our members and parking spots of other business not to be used by our club patrons. We shall have a uniform security guard after 5pm till close. This is to ensure the safety of our members and guests.
Special thanks to the following players for their speeches:
Bob Lewis (La Cresenta)
Tom Wilmhurst (San Gabriel)
Rena Wang (Arcadia)
John Lin (El Monte)
Dr. Ray Ou (Arcadia)
Especially their hope to this new club. Rena earned a lot of applause after speech because she's still a student in Arcadia High School. Also thank for the coming of Jacque Gibson, Dora Wang, Iris Wang, Scott Chen and Linda Louie.
A councilman suggest us to open till 10pm in the weeknites and 12pm in the weekened. I explained that with such a small amount to be charged which would be very hard to breakeven if close such early in the weeknites.
We thank for the patience of our pre-members. Without their support, this club won't be built.
We also thank for the visitors who gave us suggestions on the Lighting; Sky-Lights etc. Still have something to be improved everyday.
It should be another 2 weeks. As there has about 23 conditions need to be done and inspected by City of Arcadia.
You can now pre-registered as a member. The 1st month to join will be free of initiation fee. Please go to: http://www.abadminton.com/membership/application.php (http://www.abadminton.com/membership/application.php)

Ah, finally, the good news we've been waiting to hear...IMO, i think ABC has done well by complying to all city's rules & regulations. :cool:http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif
-Btw, William, i'm just curious about their regulation that members can't park in other patrons' parking spaces. Does that mean the members can't park **at all* at other patrons' parking spaces, even if it's passed their reg. business hours??..
-I also think the business hours should be extended, both on weeknights as well as weekends. I don't see any problem & IMO, I think 12am sounds reasonable on those times, granted the club manager/or whoever is in charge is/are able to stay that long & provide enough security.
*looking fw to attending the grand opening, i assume it'll be sometimes on the 1st week of Oct.?*:)

Hi ctjcad & Kwun
Thanks for your comments and wishes. City of Arcadia is fair and very classy. You can view the Staff Report at http://www.ci.arcadia.ca.us/home/index.asp?page=16&Calendar_type=1&recordid=4114&archive=agenda
We are only 3/4 way. Still have 23 conditions to follow and now is in the process to draft out a plan for city's plan check. Once the plan check is approved, we'll do all the necessary additions/modifications. After everything been done and inspected by various departments, the permit will be issued.
ABC has 72 parking spaces. After 6:30pm, our neighbor, AM Player will lend us their 59 parking spots. This also effective during weekends. So, we should have 72+59=131 parking spaces. Besides, they have 4 loading docks which will not be used during the night time and weekends. Some other neighbors are quite concern on their parking spaces being used by our club patrons. So, that's why they wish their parking spaces not to be used by ours. In return, we told them they could park on our spaces especially in the morning when needed because they really have much less spaces.
During tournaments, we shall have another 75 parking spaces from LA County Weighs and Measures Dept. So we'll have altogether 206 parking spaces during tournaments. But only limit to 4 tourneys per year.
For opening hours. City will review in 6 months. Our security guard will be the last one to leave the club permise. He has to make sure the club is clear before going home. For those graveyard shift, they can go to our sister club near by.
Eric of SGVBC visited last week. We all agreed to compete in a healthy way. Such as forming teams to play against each other. He also liked our courts layout and flooring too. Thanks.
May I also take this chance to thank Mr. Don Chew and staffs/coaches of OCBC. They also showed their sincere concern on this club during my visit to them at the US Open.
Thanks a million to all friends who showed their support when we were in a down time. While we had invested so much time and $$ but still not sure about the outcome.
May I propose here to form a Greater California League so all the clubs can join hands together and play some friendship games? Also, wish all the existing clubs and clubs to be born a success.
Will post our Official Opening Date on our website www.abadminton.com (http://www.abadminton.com) and here once we have a clearer picture.
Kwun, thanks for your goodwork on this website. Everyone in the Badminton community will enjoy.
Happy Moon Festival

..wow, so much work but i'm very happy that everything is slowly falling into place..:)
Actually what i meant earlier abt "ABC has done well by complying to the city's rules and regulations" is that, ABC has shown enough integrity, professionalism & willingness to follow what the city's ordinances are, eventhough the due process could take longer. In the long run, i think it will definitely benefit ABC.
* Thanks for the clarification on the parking issue. I think it's a win-win solution for all the businesses involved.
* Glad to hear that Eric (SGVBC) and Don (OCBC) are helping you guys out with their support. I think working together is the best way to promote the sport:cool:
* Wow, a Greater California League, heh??..hmm, i assume you mean by all the full-time clubs in California??;)..wow, what do you think kwun?? Any clubs in NorCal that might be interested??..;):)
Thanks again William for your hard effort!! And we'll be waiting for the Grand Opening announcement!!:)

NorCal is the Badminton Club Capitol of the World now. 8 professional clubs by end of 2007. Plus 4 clubs in SoCal, California will have 12 clubs altogether. It will be fun to have these clubs to form a league just like the European Soccer League, or simply NFL in the US. With own emblem and colors. And a lot of cheerleaders and followers. Also, we'll have qualified teams of Referees and Linesman. Results will be posted on Sports section of newspapers. And of course badmintoncentral.com. We may attract major TV networks and investors by boasting such atmosphere.
Kwun, can u start a new thread for me for this GCBL or simply CBL?
Thanks/William

In regard to the Greater California League, are you thinking of having adults league and/or juniors too?
FYI, I have been working on an Inter-Club Junior Team Tournament concept, and have been in discussions with several existing clubs representatives; we plan to have this first junior team tournament in 2008, as early as January. If you are interested in the proposal, please contact me at widmeister@yahoo.com

As for ICJTT, currently, SGVBC, OCBC, Bintang, SmashCity, UBC, MBBC, Belevue, Texas and Maugus are interested. We could also combine clubs in case there isn't enough players in any age group. The ideal number of junior team tournament would be 8, that way we could conduct the tournament in one weekend. The current thinking is that we would have Under-19, Under-16, and perhaps Under-12 groups depending on the interests. The format would be similar to the Sudirman Cup's except the number of matches would be 7 instead of 5. I am about to send the latest document to all clubs and would be glad to include your club.
Also, incidently, among 3 Socal clubs (OCBC, Garden Grove, and SGVBC) we unofficially have a monthly adult friendly tournament. In this tournament we have A, B, and C groups. Last Saturday it was OCBC vs GG at OCBC.

Harry I were fortunate enough to visit ABC last week and see the club. It is very nice and William did a great job with the club. I wish him the best of luck and hope that all badminton enthusiasts in the area will enjoy playing at ABC.
Sorry Kwun, I did not take any pictures for respect of William. I didn't ask him but I figure he will post pictures himself when he is ready.
Don't worry, the club is very nice. ENJOY.

I was having a hard time finding a decent welcoming place to play even if I have to pay a fee.
I think this will be a much anticipated club to the Asian population in San Marino, Arcadia, Monterey Park, Alhambra, South Pasadena, San Gabriel, W Covina, etc to name a few high density ones.
SO when exactly is it going to open ?
I am dying to know, and all the messages are so secretive and no specifics.

We had a meeting today with our neighbors. A very big step forward. Understanding what they want from our club. Now just waiting from the next hearing (hopefully the last hearing) on 11/13 at City Hall of Arcadia. If everything smooth, our club should be opened by end of November. I started to realize the American culture of doing buz.
ps: This hearing is to remove 1 condition on the User Permit. All the rest are okay.

..i came and finally witnessed the brand new ABC, for the very first time, this past Saturday...And yes, as mentioned before, the place looks fabulous; quite spacious and bright. The courts do have the same type of tiled mats as in SGVBC, but i can definitely feel the cushion underneath the floor mats/tiles.
The ceiling, walls, background nettings/screens are pretty well layed out/arranged, with plenty of spaces around the courts to sit, watch and mingle..The pictures (in earlier pages) taken by our DinkAlot tell, essentially, the whole story..
The place still looks very clean and new.....and it will be the challenge for everyone playing there to keep the place as clean and inviting as it is now..;)
As for the Grand Opening itself, will be this coming Wednesday (the 16th). Apparently, for those people who've signed up or will sign up to be a member, the membership will officially start this upcoming Sunday, Dec. 16th. So, for those who signed up before the 16th, they can enjoy a few more days of free badminton.
And i chatted very briefly with William. Apparently (according to William), the planned coach, Rudi Gunawan, who was supposed to help as one of the coach, has pulled out. Reason: other time-consuming commitments.
So, for now, ABC (Williams) will look and search for other coaching candidates.
As for the gifts, for the first 300 members, they include: a very nice ABC t-shirt and a very nice Hi-Qua badminton bag~I'll share the pics of them shortly (if not, maybe William can share the pics).:)
Oh, and yes, i also noticed a bouquet (in a vase) of flowers coming from GGBC and Mike Yang~very nice of them! And congratulations, once again, to William and ABC!;)
*William, any pics to share with us of the event this past Saturday or this coming Wednesday??..:)
