Danny Tan is a friend that i have known since me and Kelvin Kwong has gone to play on wednesday morning from 10-12 MSAC. He's been in coaching quite a few of players so I have invited him to bring a team play against our club.

So, this upcoming friendly match is against a team made up from his coaching team.

venue: ccc at waverley
date: 27/7 friday
players required: 8 players from section 2, and a few more reserve.

1st singles v 1st singles
2nd singles v 2nd singles
3rd singles v 3rd singles
4th singles v 4th singles
5th singles v 5th singles
6th singles v 6th singles
7th singles v 7th singles

8th singles v 8th singles

1st doubles v 1st doubles
2nd doubles v 2nd doubles
3rd doubles v 3rd doubles
4th doubles v 4th doubles

As usual, things are to be discussed in stages

- ask players for involvement
- decide captain
- decide partnership

So let's all get involved and let our section 2 members know about this upcoming event!

1 court only for my friendly match.

I reckon maybe i should cut all ties to best of 1 instead of best of 3 then.

Hi hkhung,

You are correct... I have made a blunder. :o:o:o

If our policy@CCC is to have 1 court for 8 players... then this match should be allocated with 2 courts, since our Friendly Match is having 16 participants in total.

My apologies. :(:(:(

Chris, did kelvin_k say yes?

i was talking to him personally today and he said he's not sure at the moment.

hypothetically, it would be a great team if we get him+edward_C together.

Hi hkhung,

For all our CCC Friendly Matches...
We always hope to achieve a result of 8:8... because that's the Friendliest Result. :):):)

Perhaps, our Hagane could be consulted to tell us whether DoublesPlease & our other Section 1 Players could be too strong for this Friendly Match.

Regarding of inviting you, sorry for the confusion. Your inclusion on this match is purely basing on the exclusion of me+jack.

So, now i will wait until Hagane reply to my info and consult chris to make the decision then.

Apologies for the lack of comments. I've been lurking more than posting, as I'm thrown into the deep end of workload.

I know only of Azrul, who is a current Sunday@MSAC player (perhaps I know of the rest, but I don't recognise their names :o)

In terms of relative strength, just as a comparison, I would rate Ketut to be stronger than Azrul in Doubles (rated based on better agility, court coverage and smash defense). I'm not certain about Singles, however, I would probably rate them as the same.

Hence, if DoublesPlease is playing, it would be a massive slaughter :D. As to anyone else in Section 1 that would create a more balanced game, I will refer to DP's ranking order.

hkhung
07-16-2007, 01:29 AM
to Chris:

if Azrul is their strongest player and he's not stronger than ketut. which means i probably should stick with my original team.

Danny said his team like singles but 3 of our 4 pairs are regular partnership which means we should even things out in doubles matches.

what do u think?

Hi Everyone,

I have read all the comments, and am really flattered by CCC's wish to field such a strong team!

However, I think I need to clarify a couple of points.

Firstly, the team I am fielding is not a team comprising of Sunday@MSAC players - Sunday@MSAC is a social game comprising of friends and family. Hagane - you know most of them.

The team that I coach is actually a team made up of school boys - all 13-16 years old. Hagane - you would also know Jonathan, who is the young boy of 13 years of age. You would also know that the rest of my team is also made up of school kids, who are no match for Section 1 players.

Second, I would really like this to be a friendly match and a great learning (to be able to learn from you guys and not to be completely wiped out) experience for my team. So good, competitive matches would be the best - not a slaughter. Nothing is proven if a team of adults slaughters a team of school kids.

So, in view of the above clarifications, could you field a more appropriate team for this friendly match?

Hi D T K Tan,

Welcome to our CCC Forum@Badminton Central. :):):)

Thank you for your clarifications...

Our CCC players are divided into 3 skill levels; Higher, Medium, Lower.

Based on hkhung's post of his team......

Singles:
1. Ketut-S
2. Andrew-H
3. Kelvin-K
4. Edward-C
5. Schuze-C
6. Jack-Y
7. Ken-H
8. Luke-C

Doubles:
1. Ketut-S & Andrew-H
2. Kelvin-K & Edward-C
3. Luke-C & Schuze-C
4. Jack-Y & Ken-H

Reserves: Helmut + Chiranthi

we wish to inform you that out of our 10 players & reserves, 4 are from our Lower skill level, 6 are from our Medium skill level, and none from our Higher skill level.

Hey HK,

Thanks for the invite. If required, count me in. I'm sure we can get another section 1 player to join in, looking for volunteers at the moment.

Our Section 1 players are our Higher skill level.

We think that hkhung's invitation to DoublesPlease to participate is just hkhung's way to be humourous... And many of hkhung's humour sometimes cause lots of confusion. :):):)

Hence, if DoublesPlease is playing, it would be a massive slaughter :D.

And we are glad that Hagane is not joinining in the humuor and thus causing more confusion.

For all our CCC Friendly Matches...
We always hope to achieve a result of 8:8... because that's the Friendliest Result. :)

In reality, this is what we believe...

For all our CCC Friendly Matches...
We always hope to achieve a result of 8:8... because that's the Friendliest Result. :):):)

If CCC is to lose, then for our Return Match, we will field in more players from our Higher skill level. If CCC is to win, then our Lower skill players will be involved. :):):)

And... our CCC Badminton believes that...
'Participation is the key to the enjoyment of Badminton, not the winning or losing'

If only i was being funny ...

Reason why I invite DP was i jump on the gun on ketut's comment regarding on his assumption

In hindsight, i should probably either
a) consult Chris before making any decision especially regarding player's quality since he's the human encyclopedia of badminton players in Melbourne
b) wait a bit for other people's comment

before i forget this, special thanks to the following people regarding this friendly match VS Danny Tan

- Chris for giving me another opportunity to screw up (i mean learning) another event and many email during the week
- Helmut for taking picture + printing out schedule
- Kelvin K for printing schedule of match
- Danny Tan for co organzing this event
- Elton for his scouting report regarding to the opposition
- Doubles Please for jokingly asking you to come and join my team (if you join the result would be so one sided if that happen, DP)

And all of my team member who arrive last nite without a hitch.

as usual there's report regarding to interesting things occurs during the nite, here goes:

special mention:
- sorry Andrew H you have to be playing single first, as i said the reason why that happen, please ask Ketut for that as he was supposed to be playing instead of u.

TRAINING HARD
- for all late comers, you guys miss how Danny Tan's team train together in a formation moving forward/backward, quite impressive stuff.

ARE YOU ACTUALLY RANKED NO 7 IN YOUR TEAM FOR SINGLES?
- Jack Y was astounded that his opponent (Jonathan) was quite strong in his team, yet he was ranked according to Danny Tan quite low in singles. Wonder why Danny Tan would do that.

WHERE'S MY CHEERING SQUAD
- hkhung was amazed at how many supporters the opposition came with + we had no one to cheer about. Calling Ketut+kelvin K, where was your g/f at last nite? And obviouly the rest of you who had social never got to my end of the court to see what's going on.

GREAT GAME, KETUT!
- Ketut was astounded that his opponent was quite strong, as Danny Tan predicted our 1st single was a very close match

MISS MATCH
- I was quite dumbfounded as some singles's score was one sided either way as the opponent got single digit. Schuze(Luke's dad) was one of them. Wonder what would the score end up if singles best of 3 instead of best of 1. Surely Jack Y + Schuze won't be saying "YES" if that's the case.

COACHING TIPS
- as discussed at supper, Danny Tan was giving tips during the running of game after certain shots. Chris, where were you when we needed your advice? Maybe we should have a non playing coach next time. Seeing Danny Tan gave out tips after his team lost the 1st set against Luke + Schuze, i simply cannot resist pretending to be a coach to the father+son team. And of course, i was speaking gibberish as usual.

MORE DOUBLES
- since the whole thing ended a quarter to 10, maybe next time we could add a few more doubles, what do you guys think?

NEW SHUTTLE FOR EACH GAME
- using new shuttle at each game certainly present an issue for future games. Maybe we could tell people to put new shuttle in the middle at the end of each game if the shuttle still usuable.

For organizing a future event, Let me know what u think?

Hi Ken,

I only have some results for the friendly. Hopefully you or someone from your team has all the results for a complete record!

I thought that this was a friendly, but it looked like you guys were out there to beat us (e.g. enlisting Elton to scout, initially considering enlisting Section 1 players before I clarified the situation)! Furthermore, you were aware that the boys I train are school boys!

As for suggestions: we thought that 7:30pm meant start time, not arrival time. As a result, we arrived at Waverley at just before 7:15pm to warm up when the gym was not yet open. Also, it would be best if all players are there at the start so that the matches can proceed according to schedule. This comment applies especially to Ketut, who, knowing he is slow to warm up, still rocked up late! Hosts really should arrive before the guests (or at least on time).

I do not quite understand why Jack Y was astounded. Jack Y's concern about Jonathan is unfounded. Jonathan is 14 years old, playing against an adult. Plus, look at the score line of 21-16 - looks close to me! So, the match up was correct. Unless you (or Jack) reckons that Jack should be placed higher up and therefore expected to win easily?

As I said, some of my players are weak - and it seems the school holidays left many of them out of practice. I was disappointed at many of their performances. In fact, those with single digits were the worst of all - they seemed to completely forget how to play after three weeks.

Danny, nice of you to chip in with your suggestions.

I thought that this was a friendly, but it looked like you guys were out there to beat us (e.g. enlisting Elton to scout, initially considering enlisting Section 1 players before I clarified the situation)! Furthermore, you were aware that the boys I train are school boys!

Look, the reason why i ask Elton's opinion is that we both do not know of each other's team. So, to ensure it was going to be 6 all, i like to know the quality of your team. Hence, asking Elton's opinion.

Which is why i said "sorry, we beat u" at the end cos we did not get 6 all.

I think next time i would set 8pm start time.

You should have seen my face when Ketut arrive. I was more worried that he would not turn up. I apologize no his behalf regarding to how it affect the match schedule. And knowing that he took ages to warm up i ask one of your player to relay a message to get him to come to our 2 courts, and obviously that did not happen.

Well, that was just his opinion. I just rank according to my team's feeling toward how good they are in single. And Danny, i do not want anybody to win easily. Which is why it shocked me to have one sided singles result.

Danny, from a coaching perspective, i can see how disappointed you were regarding on the performance. if you let me know of them coming back from school holiday, i could have postpone the friendly match for another week or two. Still, they all try hard though.

Danny, what did you think regarding on the format of match? unfortunately not many of my team want to play best of 3 for singles (mind u, ketut and i love that). So maybe we have a singles only friendly match some other time? What about doubles, since we finish a quarter to 10, we could have more doubles next time?

And Chris, you have all the results on your board, and i only have the singles match so far.

sorry, i should have preview my post.

I am wondering would you be able to type up the result on your whiteboard (unless you wipe it of course). i only have 7 singles result except Luke vs Michael jones.

Danny seem to be very upset with his boy performance. Maybe next time, hkhung should ask him when is his team ready to play.

Hint: Like half of CCC members that night don't even train up or been coach before, that including me. So it kind of balance it out abit with the match up.

Not to mention of my performance that night .. =/ It was worst than danny's boys.

My congratulations to the two teams, watching the event from the fence it looked like a busy, successful and enjoyable enterprise.

For what it's worth two piccies from the night (taken with a point-and-shoot which I loath to use, all the buttons are as tiny as on a mobile phone).

Cheers to all
Helmut

Greetings,

Awaiting now for hkhung to post the Results and helmut to post some Photos. :):):)

Hi Nano Time,

Well, I am not upset - but really disappointed with many of my players. Many simply lack passion and expect results from little work.

The school holidays really are no excuse - I had run holiday training sessions, but virtually none of them turned up. Sheer laziness!

This resulted in many sub-standard performances.

On the night, the best team definitely won - well done!

Hi Helmut - thanks for the photos!

CCC 0 : DTT 1 : Ketut-S vs Azrul-A, 19:21 (tight match, 19-all at one stage)

If there was a match worth "taping for", this is it.

As predicted by danny, this was one for watching. It has battle of the titans written all over it.

For those of you who were playing and cannot watch, some of the rallys were real long. From the sweat of ketut's face, he works very very hard. I wish i have a photo of his face so i can point out the sweat.

Ketut, maybe you could chip in for a few comments for your match?

P.S. should have gotten Danny Tan's mum+dad for the photo, since they drove Danny to the court on friday nite.

I remember Danny was taking a lot of photos and I wonder whether he has any photo he can post.

hkhung

on the back row:

schuze, luke (love to see a father+son team), euikuk P, jack, M1, chris, jonathan C, danny tan, M2, edward C, kelvin K, andrew h (still looking angry from your singles, mate)

on the front row:

ken h, kevin shi, M3, M4 (his shining logo must have made it easy for people to target smash), azrul azri

The mystery person M1-M4 should be
- michael yang (edward C, that was your oppnent)
- ronald teo (i should remember, cos that's my oppnennt!)
- michael jones (hang on, i remember your face, where were you in the picture? must have left early)
- sam liu (that was schuze's opponent)

if anyone could help me to identify the mystery person.

cheers!

Hi All,

First of all, I apologize for being late to badminton and to Danny's Team who had been kept waiting. I sent a message via sms to Chris that I would come late for that night at around 8pm and I would expect that other single players could play first ( I didn't have Ken's mobile no, so I couldn't contact him).:(

Regarding the match with Azrul, He was good, especially with netplay and smash. Some of my shots was out of court. :(:(:( Next time I should be more focused in hitting the shuttle so that it will land on the right spot. We should have the best of 3 games on singles since we only have 8 players in each team.

Last but not least, thanks to all participants, our CCC captain Hkhung, Danny's teams, Helmut and Chris.

Cheers,
Ketut

Hi Ken,

No - I did not take any photos at all (am puzzled by your comment on the Discussion Board that I took many photos). I did not have a camera.

I have talked to my players and they would like a return match to be held at 9am to 11am on Saturday, 11 August 2007 at MSAC. This is the best time for our boys because they normally play during this time slot. It will cost $10 per player as well.

Chris was saying that he might bring a weaker team next time. There is no need for this because of two reasons.

Firstly, I would like my players to learn from better players.

Second, one of our players was missing from the team on Friday. He was unavailable to play - that is why he was not on the list from the outset. This time he is available. His standard would fit in at about 4th singles - once again, should be a good match here this time!

In addition, an extra couple of weeks of training should get our players back to a reasonable level. So should have more close games this time round!

Playing format will remain largely the same. However, our players would like to have a best of three for both singles and doubles.

Please check with your players and get back to me as soon as possible.

I am booking the courts now.

Regards,

Danny

Ketut:

that was my fault cos i actually do not have your phone no and i did not get any message from Chris. As you know he got many things to worry as my friendly match + handicapped matches to organize, if you could call instead of sms, he probably would have pick up the phone.

best of 3 for singles, i have no problem. But you got to think about Jack, Schuze.

We have to wait till Kelvin K, Edward C, Luke's opinion on best of 3.

Hi Ketut & hkhung,

Hehehe... the sms was found when our session was over. :o:o:o

I was probably too busy doing our Friendly Match Scoreboard and/or doing our Handicapped Gamesboard & Tags when the sms was sent.

Or, perhaps, I was at our Welcome Ceremony, away from my phone which was left with my things at the opposite corner of the hall.

So... a lesson we have learned. :):):)

1. Our captain(s) and all team members should exchange phone numbers.
2. Our captain(s), knowing who plays who, should do our Match Scoreboard.

my mistake, cos i ask Ketut for his phone no the week before and he said i got it. But i didn't check.

For my current team, i am missing Ketut+Andrew H's phone no. So if you guys are reading this, please PM me your phone no for future reference, thanks.

anyway, have you read the invite for return match on 11/8?
