Hey SGVBC'ers,
From tournamentsoftware.com (http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/players.aspx?id=15508), I see there is very few participants for this year's tournament. Is this an accurate list of registered players?
Does anyone have any insider info on how this year turnout would be compare to last year?
Thanks.

Give it a little time, I believe SGVBC is still updating. I know at least 20 players that are playing but not registered on Tournament Software yet.
The notables include:
Chris Ngu (Two times consecutive Triple Crown Winner)
Coach James Huang
Coach Alex Liang
Kong Kong

The # 1 seed in Funky Doubles will probably be Chris Ngu and Coach James Huang. Alex is playing with Big Steve, probably seeded 2 or 3. King Kong and Wing will probably be the other seed.
All this is assuming Howard Bach, Bob Malaythong, Eric Go, Halim Harayanto, Tony and company don't play.
I spoke to Mona (Santoso) about playing and she said she'll be sitting out Summer Smash. I replied, "Why? To give others a chance to win? :p" Her reply was a facial expression...
...":p". :p:p:p :D

OK, if she is that new news. I spoke to her two weeks ago and she said she was not playing.
I told her, she couldn't resist. I was (maybe) right. :p

I feel DMS = wide open. I don't know most of the players. Originally I was going to pick Joe or Hung but I believe they got bumped up to "C".

Yeah, I didn't think that was fair either. I spoke to John and he said, "I'm an old man and Kelvin doesn't attack..." And given the 21-point, I think it's "fair" for them to play together. At least sort of. :p
There's a lot of new blood and young guns in "D" and "C". I haven't been keeping up.

Old man with many tricks and young man with just as many tricks, sheesh. They may not have strong smashes but it will be like playing against a brick wall against those two.

Yep and watch out for Kelvin's sneaky attack clear and backhand smash. But I think the opponents will have more of a chance with the NSS. If it was the OSS, it would not be fair. John and Kelvin could just play defense all day. :p

Well, even with the NSS, it will be hard to get through them since they are both very consistant. That's the name of the game with the NSS.

I plead the Fifth on this one. :p
Nearly 2 years ago, every week for 4 months, I would play against "John" in doubles. John was the best player at a local gym. It didn't matter who my partner was, I would get beaten, bad. John has a great underhand and would win 4 of 5 points from me just from trick and skill shots. John never needed to attack. I never beat John once and left losing 15-8, 15-10 (the closest I ever got to him). I left to play at SGVBC and had not seen John in almost 2 years. Last week, by chance, I went back to the old gym and saw John. He immediately saw me and we played. Our partners were about equal and just before my first serve, I wondered if I could come close to beating John. Psychologically, I still was apprehensive about John's game. His underhand, his trickery, his skill was so much better than mine. Anyway, time for me to serve...
...10 minutes later, I was serving again and it was 14-2, I was winning! 15-2, first game to me! This seemingly unbeatable, master trickster was now easily beaten, at least the first set. Maybe John is tricking me? Did I improve that much? Couldn't be. What's John up to? Hmmmm...second set to come...
Old man with many tricks and young man with just as many tricks, sheesh. They may not have strong smashes but it will be like playing against a brick wall against those two.
..i see some familiar verbage being used there, ahem-ahem..hehe:p:D;)

Tourney was fun to attend although i didnt do as well as i wished, im happy with my 1st tourney performance.
I got to watch a lot of strong players such as coach alex and mona. I was a little curious about a few things i saw. One was in the middle of mona's first match, her opponents changed shuttles and tested it first, hitting it from the back court. After that mona's partner (shu?) picked it up and said "Every other?" and began to bend/break everyother feather. I saw this earlier on center court but the girl didnt announce it first (cheating?). She simply did it. Beside me i over heard a guy say "Shes too slow, the birds too fast for her...[bend out = slower, bend in = faster]."
Is this standard? I have a feeling in Mona's case it was legit cause they both agreed but why not just use a faster/slower shuttle than break feathers?

Mona was playing with either Aaron Huynh aka "Crazy Man" or Howard Shu.
Yes, it's standard. The reason why they do this is to make the speed of the shuttle "standard" or consistent. If the shuttle is too fast or too slow, it messes with your timing and feel.
The reason why they adjusted the shuttle instead of using a new one that had the correct speed is one of the following:
1) The shuttle is fine in terms of flight and performance, just the speed is off. Folding the feather doesn't effect the performance, will just slow it down; meaning the shuttle is fine.
2) Each team has to supply shuttles. Shuttles get expensive. If you don't mind shelling out the money, request to use your own shuttles period. But of course the opponents have to agree to that.

..of the Finals..Not to undermine the other events, but IMO, only 2 were worth-watching..:p
Funky doubles - James Huang & Chris Ngu defeated Mona Santoso & Howard Hsu in 3 titillating and thrilling sets..
B Men's doubles - Mona Santoso & Aaron Huynh defeated Chris Ngu & Dung Truong in straight sets..enjoyable but not as exciting as the Funky doubles though..

I did pretty well in my predictions, at the least the "B" Division and Funky. The one big upset was Howard Shu not winning the "B" Singles. There's always next time. :p

Too bad Chris cramped even before starting the B Doubles, otherwise it would have been a good match. Cedit to Dung for giving it all he had in the match. Except for the heat in the gym, this was a fun tourney. Time to start practicing for the Winterfest.

..this yr's Funky Doubles' Final reminded me sort of last yr's Summersmash's B Open Doubles' Final..Same start and similar ending/tactically..;)
http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35611
In both cases, Ronald(last yr) and this yr Howard Shu were the ones being forced to make plays, often being forced to make plays with their backhands..;)
Anyways, hope the upcoming Winterfest will bring in the same if not better competitions..:)
