Cool! Let's hope that Chen Hong and Boonsak are in opposite halves of their draw. :)

If I remember correctly, Boonsak is studying to become a lawyer.
Anyone know about the other players that are listed here?

Badminton players nurture high hopes

Published on August 3, 2007

[UNIVERSIADE] Thai badminton players will temporarily put their personal business on the back burner when they launch their quest for gold in the 24th World University Games in Bangkok next week.

Thai players are skipping the World Championships in Malaysia that coincides with the Universiade, which has included the sport for the first time.

The Thai squad are hoping to repeat the feat at the World University Badminton Championships three years ago where they made it to the finals in all five categories and scooped three gold medals in front of their home crowd.

Those medals came from local ace Boonsak Ponsana in the men's singles, mixed double team of Sudket Prapakamol and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul and Sudket and Phattapol Ngernsrisuk in the men's doubles.

The Kingdom also claimed two silver medals through Soratja Chansrisukot in the women's singles and Kunchala and Sathinee Chankrajangwong in the women's doubles.

This time the members of 2004 squad, excluding the now retired Sathinee, form the core of the team, with HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, Poompat Sapkulchananart, Songpon Anukrittayawan, Nattapon Narkthong, Salakjit Ponsana and Monthila Meemek as the reinforcements.

Thailand's biggest hopes rest on the shoulders of Boonsak, who has proved his worth with several victories over Chinese high-profile players, including world No 1 Lin Dan, this year.

However, Boonsak's chances of collecting the medal appear to be slim as China's world No 2, Chen Hong, who is a masters student at Beijing University of Technology, figures in the list put out by the mainland. With the Chinese presence, Thai fans might have a chance to see a rematch of the recent Thailand Open final in the Games.

The Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) also anticipates a gold medal from the mixed doubles, where Sudket will temporarily discard his regular partner Saralee Thungthongkam, a pairing that once reached the world's No-1 spot, to reunite with old pal Salakjit. The two last played together in the Hong Kong Open two years ago.

"We believe Thai players are second to none tactically, but they should concentrate more on the game and avoid unforced errors. If they are more aggressive in attack, it will be perfect," said the BAT's Chareon Wattanasil.

The badminton event begins on August 9 with the mixed doubles preliminary round, while the singles and doubles events are scheduled for August 12.

Team INA is represented by Tommy Sugiarto and Alamsyah Yunus in the MS QF to be played later this evening. Tommy has a winnable tie against Poompat Sapkulchananart while Alam will have a tough tie against the home favorite Boonsak Ponsana. Alam himself just beat Gong Weijie in straight sets 21-14, 21-12, while Tommy beat Sergey Lunev 21-19, 21-11.

In the MD, Tantowi Ahmad/Viki Indra Okvana are also unlikely to beat Fang Chieh-Min/Lee Sheng Mu in the Round of 16 later. Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan lost in the earlier round to a Chinese pair.

In the WS, Pia Zebadiah was beaten in yet another tight match by Wang Yihan 18-21, 21-19, 18-21. She has shown great promise in the past few matches and should be given chances to participate in the few GP Gold events soon. Fransiska Ratnasari continued to show that she's the weakest player in Pelatnas as she surrendered meekly to Wang Lin 6-21, 7-21. I think time is running out for her.

In the XD, INA also lost Tantowi Ahmad/Yulianti as they lost to the experienced Chinese Taipei pair of Fang Chieh-Min/Cheng Wen-Hsing 21-18, 21-23, 14-21.

In the WD, INA still has 2 representatives in Yulianti/Dili Richi Puspita and Nitya Krishinda/Nadya Melati and it's almost certain they will progress to the QF too. However, they are likely to meet tough opponents in Pan Pan/Tian Qing and Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing respectively.

I am not surprised to see CHN lost to Thai, as it's like 2nd unit (or even 3rd?) against the Thai #1 squad. Regarding CH, I think it's a result from both mental (drop out from WC) and physical (age and multiple event).

Well,

I think the Thais on a good day could clinch both MS and XD, even against the best Chineese team. I think the biggest difference is MD. Where Cai/fu would have been huge favourites (and of course the ladies, which they won anyway, right..). and MD alone would have switched it to 2-3 :-)

I totally agree with you regarding the MS and XD strength from THAI team.

However, for MS and XD, I think the CHN #1s still have slight edge, and MD of Fu/Cai is definitely a favorable. Therefore, if CHN #1 team vs. THAI #1 team, and CHN lost, I will be quite surprised.

Of course, this squad, I am not surprised as the Thai won, as my previous post.

It's all over for Team INA...no more chance to win any medals. Tommy Sugiarto lost to Poompat Sapkulchananart in the QF...in straight sets  He's still inconsistent...capable of beating Chen Hong in one day and lost to someone he ought to beat the next day! Meanwhile, Alamsyah Yunus gave a good fight as he was beaten in three tough sets by Boonsak Ponsana.

In the WD, both Nitya Krishinda/Nadya Melati and Yulianti/Dili Richi Puspita lost to Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing and Pan Pan/Tian Qing as expected.

Unbelievable, TPE has representative in almost all divisions except MS for today's finale which start at 13.00 local time.

XD -- Kim Min Jung/Yoo Yeon Seong (KOR) vs Cheng Wen Hsing/Fang Chieh Min (TPE)

WS -- Wang Yihan (CHN) vs Cheng Shao Chieh (TPE)

MS -- Chen Hong (CHN) vs Boonsak Ponsana (THA)

WD -- Pan Pan/Tian Qing (CHN) vs Cheng Wen Hsing/Chien Yu Chin (TPE)

MD -- Sudket Prapakamol/Phattapol Ngensrisuk (THA) vs Tsai Chia Hsin/Hsieh Yu Hsing (TPE)

CHN has an opportunity to seal 3 badminton golds here in effort to chase Russia as top-spot of medal standing or maybe there's no bdm gold at all for CHN this time?!

Sigh, INA only got 1 Bronze from Mixed Team Competition...

Boonsak Ponsana achieved a double after his victory over Chen Hong in the MS Final. He's seriously turning into a threat for all the top 5 players. If the reward of US$300k for each medallist is for real, it's worth it for him to skip the WC after all, with 2 personal gold medals won here at Bangkok.

After the Junior championship, Gong did not get too much success in MS, that's why he was converted into MD for a period of time.

CHN MS Junior is not ready yet? Well, there's a guy call CJ, who's in the same generation of Gong, and if he's not considered as successful, I don't know who can be called ready in his generation. Of course, you can argue about other CHN. The fact is, LD and BCL, or even CY is still good enough for a few more years, and by the end of their prime, you will be surprised how much better and "ready" other CHN junior will be. ;)

Personally, I think given Wang Yihan more chances to participate in big events, she will be even more impressive. Consider how young she is, she has a bright future, and already in the same class as JYJ, Lu Lan, Zhu Lin. Of course, consistancy might still be an issue at this stage, and same applies for Wang Lin.
