PETALING JAYA: Malaysian badminton fans can look forward to the presence of Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat in the World Badminton Championships, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Aug 13-19.

The poser over whether Taufik will be in or out of the championships has been laid to rest with the confirmation of his attendance in the final list of players released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) two days ago.

Taufik indicated during the Asian Badminton Championships in Johor Baru in April that he might skip the event because his wife will be delivering their first child just days before the championships.

However, Taufik has changed his mind. And he has also expressed his intention to compete in an interview with Indonesian daily Jakarta Post.

He was quoted as saying that it would be his last shot at winning a second world title because he intends to retire after the Beijing Olympics next year.

The world championships, which stated as a biennial event, became a annual affair after 2005 but will not be held during the Olympic year.

“I want to play because there is no world championships next year. Another big aim is also to defend my Olympic title next year,” said Taufik.

His absence from the championships, which Malaysia will host for the first time, would have been a big letdown for the badminton fans, considering his appeal and his reputation as the most naturally talented player in the modern era.

Taufik, ranked 10th in the world, and former Asian champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro are the two Indonesian representatives in the men's singles event.

Malaysian coach Misbun Sidek has huge respect for Taufik even though the Indonesian star was beaten by unheralded Nguyen Thien Minh of Vietnam in the second round of the Philippines Open recently. He feels that it was just Taufik's way to psychologically trick his rivals ahead of a major event.

Taufik lifted his first world title by beating Lin Dan in Anaheim in 2005. It was Lin Dan's turn to be crowned world champion in Madrid last year.

“Regardless of where Taufik is going to be placed in the draw, he will be dangerous and I rate him as one of the strong contenders for the title,” said Misbun.

“He may say he is not fit but I think he is going to be very tough to beat if he is sets his mind on doing well in any particular event. It will be interesting to see whether Taufik drawn in the same half as Lin Dan or Chong Wei.”

Lin Dan is the current world number one ahead of Malaysian Lee Chong Wei. The seedings for the world meet will be released today and the draw will be made the following day.

:D Totally agree!

Btw, just watched Chn masters TH - LCW, seems unless TH has been doing some serious stamina training since then, he may have difficulty playing against 2 or 3 tough opponents in a row. So I think TH does not have much chance winning the title; On the other hand, I think he has good chance eliminating either LD or LCW if they meet not too late, that is when TH still has the energy. So, LD or LCW should pray to get a favorable draw... :D

Taking Misbun's playing style into account, I think it is understandable that he favors TH... :D

That one not his tactic. A lots peoples and alot of Coaches and head coaches very very worry to taufik included you.. he is the dengerous players.. He can beat any players if he want to do it.

So that's way: China coaches/head choaches and malaysia coaches put taufik name to the list of the dangerous player.

I like taufik play. Very good skills, backhand smash, Jump Smash, and net. I think nobody can do this 3 skills perfectly. Only Taufik Hidayat can do.

Therefore LYB and China Coach very headache if they players will meet taufik..Before they players meet taufik, so LYB and his team discuss very long to preparing the strategy. and Also LYB also ask his player to record video during taufik play...so they can predict and predict. But that one not fully successful.

And the other tactic: Ask the lineman to pro to malaysia players.. so malaysia players can win...that's way LD can beat LCW at home...hhaa LCW play at home better than outside

Remember that after Taufik Hidayat beat LD on the Asian Games 2006. Taufik handshake to LYB and I think he want to say..Your strategy not efective and your players not level with me. hhaaa and Taufik want to send message: Therefore later on you can't arrogant..

Absolutely incorrect !
1. LD is known for his high speed jumping smash.. TH is the most lethally player in backhand smash only..
Defense is TH main weakness point compare v LCW/LD..
2. LCW win IO & PO 07 proove & lost to defend his title in MO07 proove that his capability to win outside MAS !
3. TH handshake with LYB is just a friendly gesture to shows to the CHN team that what is the meaning of "sportsmanship" !

Taufik is one of the most complete player, I think you should watch more of his games to appreciate his true skills.. his smashes are more powerful, faster & accurate compared to LD, however not as steep or unexpected as LD's

TH only smashes a few times, but when he smashes, you can be sure that the timing is right... his back can't hold on to what LD does, smash, smash and smash, but still, TH's down the line smash is one of the best...

In the Wikipedia article about Taufik, it is said that Taufik has fastest backhand smash (168mph), which we all know and fastest MS forehand smash (198mph), that's about 318km/h. (link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taufik_Hidayat)

Now can anyone confirm this or prove this untrue? I have seen Taufik smashes > 300km/h a lot, but I cannot remember he smashes > 310km/h in any event.

I would say Taufik plays badminton beautifully. Very elegant. Very traditionally Chinese (comparable to Chinese caligraphy, for example). What's impressive is that he can still win with such a style. Should it be called "Tao of badminton"?

Sementara Taufik memang masih menunggu kelahiran anaknya. Semoga kelahirannya nanti menjadi penambah semangat dan motivasi sehingga bisa merebut gelar juara dunia lagi,'' tutur Christian. (nur mekah/seputar-indonesia.com)

If in fact Taufik really wish to retire after Olympic then we can bet he will participate most of the SS tournaments from now on. Although Taufik keeps us suspense about his participation in WC but the chance he plays is quite high as there're not many big tournaments around prior to his retirement so enjoy while he still can should be his mentality.
Make no mistake, the talented Taufik wants attention so there will always be "news" or speculation about him attending/not attending particular tournament, that's why makes him so colorful.
Taufik will be there(WC), he loves playing in Malaysia with huge pool of his fan chanting his name. I can almost see the headline " Baby born and father won" ... Ops, mistake, click <Undo> should be " Malaysia new history, Chong Wei triumph !!!" :D

Has BWF ever fined any players/teams for withdrawing after the draw have been made? TH has been very good in making last minute withdrawal after the draw made. I personally think the enforcement should be taken by BWF to prevent such cases from happenng.

Beside money, the player/team should be banned from competing for certain period for withdrawing without valid reasons. Otherwise, some players just take things for granted.

I see no psychological tactic Taufik is doing in this matter. He just wants to wait for his daughter, putting family first then badminton. If the baby is not born before WC starts, he just won't come; and if the baby is then he will join in the tourney. it's his first child anyway, won't it be just so normal for taufik to say that he was uncertain about his participation in the wc because it all depends on the baby's birth?

And i don't second the opinion that TH might pull back again even though he already said he's joining in. Now he has so much spirit to win so as to celebrate his daughter's birth, to add his prestigious series of title, and to show to his daughter what a great father he is! :) :)

And yes, it's Natarina Alika...

Some ppl just cannot accept that TH putting badminton at a low priority while still manage to be such a strong player.

It is actually possible that TH may pull back again. Anyone who has a baby knows how fragile these newborns are... There are many things that can make a new dad so worried that he cannot concentrate on anything else. Those who do not have children usually have difficulty understanding this. :-)

TAUFIK Hidayat, Resmi Jadi Ayah

http://www.rileks.com/images/news/30820070447371.jpg ket foto: Amy Gumelar

Relieved, Taufik Soon To Fly To Kuala Lumpur

The long awaiting is now over. Indonesia’s top men’s single shuttler Taufik Hidayat will soon fly to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to participate in the World Championship commencing on August 12 after his wife has successfully delivered their baby daughter Natarina Alika Hidayat who was born yesterday, Friday, August 3, 2007 at RS Bersalin Asin, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, with 3.5 kg weight and 50 cm long. Thus, the shuttler now has no more worry to join the prestigious championship.
“Thanks God my child has been born. Now I can concentrate and has more spirit to join in the Championship,” stated the relieved Taufik. “Now I am more encouraged to achieve more. I want my child one day see her father competing.”

Badminton fans and supporters around the world cheered for Taufik’s certainty in joining the Championship, as they have been waiting anxiously whether the great shuttler will join in the event. The situation was becoming merrier as the baby was born at the same day the championship’s draw was released.

Taufik might face the top shuttler from China Lin Dan in the quarterfinal although in the three rounds prior to the quarterfinal Taufik will meet relatively “easy” matches. Taufik will meet Sapin’s sole soldier Jose Antonio Crespo before meeting either the Indian Anup Sridhar or the Austrian Juergen Koch (Austria). The third round Taufik might potentially meet with the host’s seeded 13 Muhd Hafiz B. Hashim. Lin Dan’s path is even easier as he gets bye in the first round.

If Taufik can pass Lin Dan, he will most probably meet with Malaysian top gun Lee Chong Wei. Playing in his own field Chong Wei is extremely ambitious about grabbing the title to continue his Indonesian Open 2007 title.

"I will not meet Lin Dan, Taufik, or Bao Chunlai in the first half of the tournament, which is good for me," Chong Wei commented.

Another Indonesian men single shuttler Sony Dwi Kuncoro will meet the Indian Anan Chenan while Simon Santoso will fight Vietnam’s number one shuttler Nguyen Tien Minh in the first round. Tien Minh was quite a big news in last month’s Philippine Open when he beat Taufik.

In the mixed doubles Indonesia gets a quite pleasing draw. The three pairs are dispersed in two different final blocks. Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir is in the same block with its junior Muhammad Rijal/Greysia Polii, which makes them potential to meet with each other in the third round. Another pair Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa is at the same block as the world’s number one from China Zheng Bo/Gao Ling, Nova/Lilyana’s eternal rival.

“We are really looking forward to beating Zheng/Gao in this tournament,” Lilyana affirmed. This year the two pairs met quite frequently yet the Indonesian pair could only manage to steal one win, which was from the Singapore Open 2007 held last May.

Honestly ....indonesian supporters have no manners ( most of them..mey be due to lack of education)...It is so scary to be in the stadium...yelling and they are so aggresive....

i beg to differ... indonesian supporters supporting their players, i think, is a lovely dimension of the game that i respect and cherish... its just like the english cheering for their football team... it dosent mean that they dont have any education...

Well..I was there during Indonesia Open , I believe it was 1995 or 96 and when Mia was representing Dutch...I forgot.....some supporters threw things to otehr supporters....it was scary...plus if INA players did not play...they would yell like" go home...being a becak driver" etc..some of them using obscene and offended languages.like they did to Mia.( something like Taritor, etc)) ...so i did not make it up...may be other INA BCers can support my statements....

ya, i admit it does get scary when things like that happen, but dont you think its stereotyping and generalising? i mean, in IO 2007, i didnt see any bad incidents although indonesia was only playing in 1/5 (and lost the only finals) finals... i just think it is unfair to call indonesians uneducated?

I said..mostly...I am indonesian too by the way...
I think that time,....Organiser gave away tickets so those passers by, mostly unemployed went to see the matches...I am not stereotyping...even my good friend, Yayuk Basuki complained when she played for Wismilak in Jakarta..she complained how INA supporters bood her when she double faulted the serve...it is very sad indeed....

I wonder if INA fans will jeered Tony as they did to MIA Audina when he partners Chandra in the stadium. Coz Tony does not represent INA anymore...
If this was the reason behind MTZ/MFL win over Tony/Chandra in IO07 SF??

I did not know the recent one.....I knew that Mia was crying and gave away the match..it was heartbreaking...I remembered what those supporters said to her...I cant put "the words" here...it was really harsh ...since then Mia was absent in IO for 2 or 3 yrs..I forgot what year she came back and played ( may be in Surabaya)...
actually she wanted to represent INA as long as PBSI allowed her to practice and lived i Netherland with her husband...but PBSI did not allow that...

I am sure they bash TH...:(:( I remember when TH was planning to move to Singapore..many sport officials ( government one, like KONI), not necessary from badminton, did start some " fires"....afterall, INA depends on TH...not Sony or simon yet...

remember that Sport miniter went o Singapore and had a talk with Singapore miniter to allow TH back to INA.....I think INA learnt the lesson from Mia's case..

wow... your'e totally wrong
in 1996 mia stil represented indonesia, she was silver medalist in olympic 1996, and she also played for indonesia in uber cup 1998, she moved to dutch unofficially in 2000 and she started representing dutch in 2002.

those are history... now indonesia supporters have gotten mature and behave nicely :D :D :D, when indonesia failed totally in in open 2007, ina supporters didn't went 'mad'

when tony gunawan played in ina open 2005/2006, he didnt get 'boooo' or 'dirty words' from ina supporters, they even respected him

huang,
please come to senayan next year
to watch thomas/uber cup, you will feel the different athmosphere :)

the Ina supporters are more attractive recently
