KUALA LUMPUR: Hosts Malaysia’s plan to begin their final leg of preparation for the World Championships at the tournament’s venue – Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil – came unstuck due to flooring problems.
Yesterday, the singles and doubles players had to stay put at their respective training grounds – Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara and the Gymnasium Two in Bukit Jalil respectively – because of the unsuitable playing conditions at the Putra Stadium.
National chief coach Yap Kim Hock was disappointed that his players did not get to train at the Putra Stadium.
“There was an air-gap in the timber flooring. The surface was softer than it was supposed to be. It is unsafe for players, especially when they jump. We have asked them (Stadium Board) to re-do it,” said Kim Hock yesterday.
“I have been given the assurance that it will be done within a day. We will begin our centralised training tomorrow. “It is not the start that I wanted for the team but this matter (the flooring problem) is beyond my control. I hope all will be smooth sailing after this.”
