Just received from Gary Grierson, the Match Secretary of CBA (Central Badminton Association, Melbourne), a mail asking if members@CCC would like to participate in their Summer 2007/8 Season Inter-Club Competition.

Below is the mail from Gary.

Hi Chris,

CBA is adopting some 4 player formats next season that may enable you to enter a team or two into our weekly competition.

It may be possible to play home matches at your venue but this would need the CBA committee to give approval. We would expect you to be able to provide at least one court for the duration of the match.

The following competition formats are offered for next season:

· 4 player teams (any combination of players from 4 men through to 4 ladies).
Teams to be listed in order of strength -- If lady is strongest player she must be listed as No 1.
Playing doubles only -- all matches to be the best of 3 rally point games to 21 points (no setting).
§ The matches have a three hour time limit from 8.00pm to 11.00pm.
§ This competition will be played at MSAC and other approved venues.

· 4 player mixed teams (2 Ladies & 2 Men).
Playing men's doubles, ladies' doubles & 4 mixed doubles – All matches the best of 3 rally point games to 21 points (no setting)..
§ The matches have a three hour time limit from 8.00pm to 11.00pm.
§ The Section 1 level of this competition will be played at MSAC on Thursday nights.
§ This competition will be played at MSAC and other approved venues.
§ For MSAC
§ Section 2 is to play Wednesday
§ Section 3 & 4 are to play Tuesday.
§ If you would prefer another night please include a note giving reasons- if it is possible to fit in the fixture the Committee may allocate this night.

· 2 player (2 Men, 2 ladies or 1 Man & 1 Lady) teams. Each playing singles, reverse singles and one rubber of doubles.
§ all singles matches to be the best of 3 rally point games to 15 points (no setting) with the doubles match the best of 3 rally point games to 21 points (no setting)..
§ This competition will be played at MSAC - Matches are from 8.00pm to 10.00pm.
§ Dependant on entries A grade will be Monday nights, B/C grades on Thursday nights.


If you were based at MSAC you could expect to pay the following fees..... .

CBA charge ....$10.00 per player as registration fee for the season.

Court costs -- 2 hour competitions = $28.80 /2 players = $14.40 per player per home match

Court costs -- 3 hour competitions = $43.20 /4players = $10.80 per player per home match

Plus the cost of Shuttles - approx $22.00 dozen / number of players = $11.00 per home match(2 players) or $5.50(4 players).

The most home matches you can expect in a season is 8:-
so for the 2 player competition you will pay just over $210.00
and for either 4 player competition around $140.00.

On top of this you may need to pay the annual BV fee of $22.00.

i would love to play but i doubt we will have a 4 man team from section 2 at the moment.

especially that would be a weekly commitment over a period of time.

A 4 man team is not required.

If you read it again, you can have either option 1, a flexible structure, where you need 4 players regardless of gender.

or, you can have option 2, a fixed structure, where you specifically need 2 Ladies and 2 Men.

Subject: Some feedback please... Possible season change

At the last CBA committee meeting, the matter of the timing of the Central seasons was raised.

Central seems to be one of the only Associations that run Summer (Oct-April) and Winter (May- Sept) seasons. Most - if not all - other Associations run 2 seasons each Calendar year and most call them Autumn (Feb-June) and Spring (July-Dec).

Central has stuck with their season break-up for over 60 years - but lately have questioned whether or not to change. There has been two major changes in the past 10 or so years - these being the loss of their original Venue when MSAC was built, and the change in the number of school terms from 3 - 4. Additionally Melbourne has hosted the Australian Grand-Prix at Albert Park.

The committee is seeking some feed-back from the clubs as to what we should do to ease some of the pressure around the Summer season. There are a couple of alternatives:-
Switch to Autumn/Spring seasons -- running from mid-February to end-June and mid-July to end-November.
Retain Winter/Summer seasons - start-May to mid-Sept and start-Oct to end-Mar. The end of the Summer season may vary as some-times it may be required to use a week or two of second term (or some of the school holidays to finish the finals).

The Committee is meeting again early on 10th August when we will most likely make a decision on what season's to play from 2009 onwards - if we decide to switch a short summer season (8 weeks) would be played to enable the change-over.
Please provide some feedback to your committee people during the next week.
Committee people are - John Weisheit, Gary Grierson, Merle Freeman, Esme Campbell and Maureen Chau.

My preference would be to switch the seasons to Autumn and Spring;
Autumn season -- running from mid-February to end-June, and
Spring season - running from mid-July to end-November

We welcome any comments/suggestions from our CCC members. And CCC Badminton would submit them to CBA.
