In what aspect do you want to know? I got one, it is really light, very good for defensive, but when smashing it doesn't feel solid enough. If you want to try, I can go to Soi 101 court.

Could you please tell me how much is a MP-88, and is it a 3U or 4U at the Yonex Shop in WTC/Bangkok? Many thanks.

Thanks BangkokPlayer.

One of my friends is soon going to Bangkok for a trip and stay nearby the WTC.

But where is FBT (and what is FBT full name) and how far is it from WTC? I wonder if you can describe some detail of FBT.

Thanks.

Racket : Yonex Muscle Power 88
Compostion : Ultimum Titanium + High Modulus Graphite Shaft, H.M Graphite Frame
Balance : Head Heavy
Flex : Medium Stiff
Length : "Long Racket" (5mm longer than conventional rackets)
Weight : 3U
Grip Size : G5
String : BG-85
Stringing : 2 string pattern, 24x25 lbs
Cost : S$200 (US$108) including strings, grip

Evaluation Period : 2 weeks

First Impression:
When I held the racket, it certainly didn't feel like 3U to me. I've been using 2U rackets all the while and this racket certainly felt rather head heavy. The racket also has a slim shaft (7mm, same as Slim 10) and a slightly thinner frame (not as thin as the Slim 10 though). Doesn't have the Titanium Mesh unlike the MP-100 but design and colour wise.... I must say this racket build and finish is very nice, it's a mix between a Ti-10 and MP-77.

First Week:
Well it certainly didn't take me long to adapt to this racket. For the first week, I was using BG-66 strings @ 23x24 lbs. It felt pretty good. Net play and control wise, this racket is quite impressive. Defensive play was good as well. Unlike the MP-100 (which I have), this racket doesn't feel as flimsy (slow??). I'm able to manuevure it very quickly. This is also probably attributed to the fact that it's shaft and frame is thin, similar to the Iso Slim 10 which I also have! Drops and cuts were tight and accurate as well. However, clears and lobs were not as hard and far as normal. Smashes were quite strong, but weaker when compared to MP-100 or Ti-10. Power in the smashes generated were definately more powerful than the Iso Slim 10. Went home feeling quite satisfied with it but was not up to my expectations.

Second Week:
I got it restrung with BG-85 strings @ 24x25 lbs. Immediately, I could tell the difference. Net play and drops were still good, but my clears and lobs are more penetrating. Smashes were more powerful and accurate and backhand shots were more easy to execute as well. Seems that strings does make alot of difference!

Singles Play:
This racket can definately be used for Singles play. It's more for the finesse player though that doesn't mean this racket doesn't pack a punch! (Think Slim 10) It's very manuevarable and this enable me to get to "hard to reach" shuttles faster and also able to hit it back properly.

Doubles Play:
This racket excels is doubles. It maneuverability means that it really does excel when I'm the net player. When I'm at the back, I was able to smash pretty hard too though head heavier or stiffer rackets can produce harder smashes. Drops were effective as well.
In a defensive position, this racket really excels. When opponents smashes were weak or high, I was able to effortlessly direct the shuttle where I wanted it to go. This helps us to gain back the attack most of the time because I was able to direct the shuttle to the oppenent "open spaces".

Conclusion:
The great maneuverablilty and feel of this racket means that the user is able to control and place the shuttle more accurately. This racket really reminds me of the Iso Slim 10 but is definately more powerful than it!

Overall Ratings:

Control : 9/10
Power : 7/10
Manueverability : 8.5/10
Build and Finish Quality : 8.5/10

Singles Play : 8/10
Doubles play : 8.5/10

Recommendations:
It appears that BG-85 strings @ 24x25 lbs works perfectly for me. It may vary with individuals. This racket is definately not for beginners for 1 good reason : It's expensive. Well unless you're some rich kid that can afford it!!
Okay but seriously, only intermediate and advanced players can fully realise the potential of this racket as certain amount of wrist power and control is needed.

hi Marky,
FBT is "Foot Ball Thai" building, but mostly be called just "FBT" . It's loceated just oppsite of "Indoor Staduim Huamark" on the Ram-kam-haeng rd. and quite far from WTC. but easy to go.

The Yonex MP 88 is the finest all round raquet I have played with. Although it may not seem as powerful as say, the ti swing power SR, believe me, when a shuttle is struck well, it literally explodes off the raquet face. Its main advantage however, is in its defensve qualities. Many people opt for the MP 100 or the two stiffest versions of the ti swing power series. However, it is my personal belief and that of many others that the MP 100 is too stiff, which means that you need to have tremendous wrist strength to play a good quality high lift off a smash from an opponent. Take Kim Don Moon and Ha Tae Kwon, the Korean doubles players who won the All England 2002, they both used ti10's and the MP88 is the new replacement from Yonex for the ti10. With the swing powers however, I feel that there is too much of a delayed hit sensation wherby the shaft is a little soft, and so reaction times are cut down slightly especially when reacting to fast attacking shots. The MP88 on the other hand has sacrifised power for manoevability and its extreme light weight, lighter than the MP100, means that can play as fast as you'd like and not feel as if some one is pulling you raquet backwards as you swing.
Well that's it. To cap it off, I recommend this raquet to anyone. It is worth the investment.

what would rate the stiffness of mp88 relative to mp100, ti10, and ti sp SR? between mp100 and the SR?

MP88 really a replacement for Ti-10? Yonex officially stated this?

F-Man
05-30-2002, 12:41 PM
This is to those who have responded to my review of the MP88. Firstly to "Cooler". Unfortunately, there are no set standards as to which shafts are rated stiff and medium stiff e.t.c. What I can tell, and I am not alone here, is that the MP100 is probaly the stiffest raquet available on the market. In last year's Yonex catalogue, the MP100 was rated extra stiff. So therfore, I would describe the MP88 as stiff ar maybe slightly softer. The Ti SP series contain four raquets, all head heavy balanced, ranging from "whippy" or soft, to stiff. I hope this answers your question.

To Chu Pa: Yes it is true. According to my coach, the Ti10 is to be replaced by the MP88. Whether Camilla Martin and the Koreans Kwon and Moon will switch, I am not sure. The Ti10 is definitely not in the latest 2002 Yonex catalogue. Why do you ask? Are you a Ti10 owner? If so, may I recommend the MP88 to you. It is just as powerful as the Ti10 but lighter and more manoeverable. Try it. You will not regret it.

F-Man.

your coach might meant mp88 is the next new racket as i can not see mp88 replacing ti-10 in performance wise. If i remember correctly, mp88 is 4U while Ti-10 is 2u (with some 3u too). The weight difference is enough to say mp88 play much difference than ti-10, whether ti-10 discontinued or not. I do find mp100 stiff but there are many racket more stiffer->> blacken and leVel kevlar for examples

Sawasdee Krub BangkokPlayer
Just have done registration to this new format.
Two of my friends bought new MP88 4U.
We think that the rackets are light , fast, but very good for smash. Control and return are easy.
However, both are broken, about two weeks-life each.
MP88 is very good for double play if no racket crash.

Pee BKP and Pencil,

I suppose u guys are elder to me! If not NONG,I think i would agree with Mp 88 4U being fragile. It is so surprising to find out that the 4U rackets of the swing power series hold better than the 4U of Mp 88.

It is unfortunate that i was not able to try out the 3U verison. A friend of mine is flying in from Bk on the 3Rd and he said he might buy the 3U Mp 88 if it is available and i am looking forward to play with it!

I thought It was KHRAB and not Krub. I think i have to improve my THAI skills.

Have recently begun playing with the MP88 and the first impressions are good. I am using the 4U as the Yonex dude said that the 3U is not being sold in the UK. The power seems good, although only when hit correctly, the Ti-10 was better on off-centre hits. Power is not the main concern with this racquet though, but timing. Hope everyone is wrong about the weakness of the 4U!

Well it's ONLY 3 months since I bought it. It broke yesterday after clashing in a doubles match at the 8 o'clock position! It was strung at 23x24lbs with BG68Ti....

Overall, I find this a excellent racket. However, the durability of this racket is questionable... It was THE FIRST CLASH that my MP88 has and it broke....
Great manuevarability and also has power in smashes though MP100 or Ti-10 has more power.
The paint job on this racket is one of the most simple, elegant and nice scheme I've seen.

Overall ratings:

Power : 7.5/10
Control at the front : 9/10
Control from the back : 8.5/10
Manueverability : 9/10
Paint Job : 9/10
Durability : 6/10

Singles Play : 8/10
Doubles Play : 8.5/10

Power Player : 7.5/10
Control Player : 9/10
Defensive Player : 9/10

Now I'm contemplating whether I should get another 3U MP88!! Hmm.....

Same as usual....

In another words.. prices don't drop :(

Just check Lee's site.... yo's will be the same or almost the same price as Lee's but Yo's offers free stringing with racquet..... Make sure you pay cash so you don't have to pay taxes.. heh

I am sorry everyone but I don't understand why all these MP88s are breaking so rapidly. My MP88 is also 4U and it has clashed many times with other raquets and so far, onlr a few scrapes of paint has been removed!

Chu Pa

Yo's has MP88 and MP77 in stock. 3U G4 for MP88 and 2U G4 for MP77. He did mention someone ordered a MP90 JP version from him. He is selling for C$300 which is roughly HK$1,500. Pretty good price since it has to be imported from Japan. Compared to Luxis which is $1,800.

yeah, but with Luxis, you can bargain....

Chu Pa
06-07-2002, 02:56 PM
Kwun, I can proabably get the price down to $1,500. I purchased from Luxis last year when I went back. Problem is I have to fly back to HK to purchase the racquet where as I can just drive to Yo's and pick-up the racquet. :) I understand if I go to HK to vacation then that is a different story. :)

Hi,
I know where to buy the racket in the best price in Thailand. The price is much cheaper than other place. It's opposite to National stadium. I can buy MP100 in 3200 baht or 75$(not include string)
