For INA's MD:
certainly no 1 pick from Team Pelatnas is Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan. They are both only 19 this year and the future certainly is bright if they maintain current performance. Bona could learn from his older brother, Markis Kido. If PBSI sends this pair to more Gold GP and hopefully SS by mid next year, they should be the one to watch out for in World Championships 2009 and 2010; and definitely for the Asian Games 2010 (22 yo) and Olympics 2012 (24 yo).

Next up will be Fernando Kurniawan/Subakti, although I haven't seen enough of them to make a judgement.

Wiqfi Windarto/Alfiat Yuris Wirawan is also a contender...they are younger than Bona/Ahsan, I think they are only 18. A SF placing in the Indonesia Challenge is a good result for them.

As for Rian Sukmawan/Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki, they might be slightly old for the Olympics 2012, since they will be around 27 yo by then. The other complication is the fact that they have quit Pelatnas and whether they can go to the Asian Games or Olympics will be a problem. Nevertheless, I think they have a realistic chance of being a top 10 pair by next year.

I fink INA should consider sending 1 or 2 Juniors for TC'08... Not to rely too much on TH... And also give the quota to singles instead of doubles players.

So as MAS team. Every MJs should fight for a place since the third singles has been an wide open challenge.

The idea team for filling out the player's quota should be : 5 Singles, 2 doubles pairs & one reserve doubles players

ENG does have some potential MD and XD pairs. With Tan Kim Her's help, they should remain a threat in these 2 disciplines (plus the WD). They are not exactly young, but, we know that European players are usually late bloomers, like Anthony Clark/Robert Blair and Anthony Clark/Donna Kellogg only show improved performance in the past 2 years only.

MD:
Robert Adcock/Robin Middleton (21/22 yo)

XD:
Robert Adcock/Sarah Bok (21/22 yo)

That is true!

Paul Eric Hoyer Larsen won the Olympic gold at 30+ years old. Jens Ericksen-Martin Lungaard also became very competitive world-beaters at 30+... Kenneth Jonassen also...

Maria Febe Kusumastuti; she already floats like a butterfly, just haven't sting like a bee... :p She needs more power than today. She may very well be the next INA #1 WS after Maria Kristin and Firdasari retires... Febe and Pia are the top contenders to replace Maria and Firda...

True also. We also have our very own CTF/LWW. However i dont think they can last as long as Jens and Martin do. But at least they can still play at the highest level until now.

In terms Indonesian players. I can see that what the private sector does to the players is a good thing. The jrs need good support and management. Unfortunately PBSI can't do much.. they need to have a revamp. I'm sure Indonesia will be back on track as consistent world beaters like those old days. At least they have more players than us the Msians.

We still need alot of young players. Not enough.

According to some of my frans from Euro, Most European family would encourage their kids to learn & enhanced their football skills over others sports. The PRO football players could earn at least 5000-8000 euro dollar weekly minus tax. While PRO from badminton earning is very damn poor !
If they discovered that they doesn't have enough talent in Football, then only they will considered switch their attention to other sports.. Mayb badminton.
I believe this is the main keys which affected Most of the Euro badminton to become late - bloomers in international badminton arena.

So many switch to doubles after their junior years are up and Shin has already had some success in mixed. Kim Dong Hun is no longer on the national team. Jeon has been plagued by injuries ever since the Korea Open 2007. In doubles, some of the juniors may have a future. Lee Jung-hwan and Kim Ki-jung, for example, or Lee Dong-geun, Jung Eui-seok, and Kim Young-sun. It is a little early to tell what the partnerships will be.

It is fascinating that somehow Korea can produce many good MD or WD...eventhough they keep changing the pairs until getting the right ones...still young ones are the one to watch...Korea needs another back-up pair after LYD/JJS and LJJ/HJM...in a year or two, we will see the stronger Korean MD....

The current top-4 bdm stars of MS sector : LD-TH-LCW-PG and who will replace them? Difficult to decide but for TH, almost certainly must be Tommy as the successor.

WS -- Seems Wang Yihan is CHN's upcoming star. She had grabbed World Junior/06, Invitational World Cup 2006 title and Individual Gold of Universiade/07 thus far. Meanwhile INA, still struggling to produce next Susi Susanti, maybe Pia/Sylvinna/Maria?!

Yeah.. The KOREAN always unpredictable with their doubles formation. Especially in team events..
LYD will be growth as the next PJB.. who can win with partnering any of their Doubles players.. ;)

So sue me! :p I like them both, but Febe has more spunk! ;) Both have good footwork [in the INA Junior level]. However, it is more fun to watch Febe. She has a lot more shot-variety arsenal. She screams and yells after exciting points.

Sylvi is like a poker-faced ice-queen... :) although she has a never-say-die attitude, she has shorter legs and limited power... Very difficult in the long run when playing against the tall-slender Chinese WS... Sylvi has a shot to become a top 20-30 player one day... I heard Sylvi has played Wang Yihan 3 times before... won the 1st time, lost the last 2 times... :p In last year's World Junior Championship, Sylvi stretched Saina Nehwal to the limit in rubber sets before eventually loosing. Saina was more powerful.

Febe... will reach WMC level... ;) I dare not say she can be INA's next Susi Susanti... [even though many people said Febe floats on the court like Susi]... :p Note: Febe got annihilated by Wang Yihan in the World Junior Championshp last year... :p

INA's most talented WS of the future are still around 15-16 today... The rest of the world have not heard of them yet. They are around the same age as Ayu Pratiwi, Gebby, and Rischa who represented INA in the Under-16 Asian Championship last month. But their record has not been spectacular.

They are still like Eagle chicks who are still learning to fly... Still clumsy, cannot flap their wings too well. But once they get their act together, they shall spread their strong wings wide, and they shall soar to the sky! ;)

Christian is right. INA shall need 5 years for another Susi Susanti... :o Febe, Pia will be around the same or slightly tougher than Maria & Firda [today]. They are the pre-cursor of what's to come... ;)

I disagree. :o taufik-ist, Indra, Sandy, badMania, ctjcad, and Huangkwokhau are bigger INA fans than me... :D They know all the statistical facts. I only know the general picture. But I think I know about Indonesian Badminton politics and domestic badminton issues better than most fans. Many people from various roles in INA's badminton world volunteer information to me... :p

Febe defeated Fransisca Ratnasari in the 2007 Indonesian Open Superseries, then went on to play 3 games against Cheng Shao-Chieh of Taiwan in the next round but eventually lost... :p

Cheng Shao-Chieh defeated Xie Xinfang decisively in a lop-sided straight sets in the next round. [I admit Xie Xinfang played terribly in this year's Indonesian Open Superseries]... If Febe had a little more experience [and muscle-power], it could have been Febe who defeated an off-form Xie-Xinfang the next day... :p

Maria Febe vs. Lydia Cheah... hmm... They might meet each other in this year's World Junior Championship. ;) We shall shall see...

I think they willingly volunteer information to help enlighten those who are really curious and genuinely want to improve things... :)

Pia is 20. Febe is 18... ;) I have never seen a well-supported full-time badminton athlete (like Febe) peak at 18. If Pia appear to be better now [which she argueably is, I admit], we should not be too surprised.

If we want to compare an 18 year old Febe with an 18 year old Pia, then compare Pia's abilities and accomplishments in 2005 with Febe's abilities and accomplishments in 2007. In my opinion, that is more fair. I

n my observation, Pia have always excelled more in power. ...and Pia can surely play better doubles than Febe. :D Other than that, in terms of fluid footwork, shot-making technique, gameplay variations, Febe is better... [this is an amateurish observation by a non-pro like me]

Note: PBSI just found that Pia cheated on her age. So she can't play at the Asian Junior, Milo Junior, and World Junior this year. Febe still can.

True...hehe...Hau-Ge is a bigger badminton fan than me :D

However, being able to know the inside of Indonesia Badminton is only possible if u are in the game, let alone if someone want to volunteer these info to u :p Krisna, u should run for PBSI president in the near future...I will support u :D

Hey, you guys from LA can't quote each other like that. That's so unoriginal... :p:D

But seriously, who do you think will be the next biggest star in MS of the world after Taufik, Lin Dan, Peter Gade, an LCW retires...?

From China, we can see Chen Jin... From Malaysia, I only see Tan Chun Seang... From Denmark... er... I have no idea... From Indonesia, it is too tough to call... among the known players, people will say Tommy Sugiarto. But I personally think Hayom Rumbaka will exceed Tommy's abilities...

There is an article today ( bulutangkis.com) that Christian hadinata will fight to get the Pratama progam back, the problem it was dismissed due to lack of fund ( I think it was almost 5 or 6 yrs now...May be Sandy/Krisna can help with this info)...Pratama is like transistion between junior to senior....if I am not wrong...

Thats right...they can see that Pelatnas failed in recent Indonesia/Surabaya Challenge with 1 titles, the rest of 2 gone to Djarum....From Rian, Ade Lukas, now Rendra Widjaya are out of Pelatnas as Djarum gives them more chance to compete more tournaments....due to lack of fund, Pelatnas could not send many pairs out at the same time....so I think it is good that let Djarum groom other players until they are ready to enter Pelatnas and but for some I doubt it if they earn good enough money...they may not want to come back to Pelatnas...like Rian,Rendra,Ade Lukas, etc

TCS will likely be groomed and given the opportunity to be a MAS MS star in future...whereas GWJ happens to play MS baddy in the wrong nation which has so many future hopefuls lining up, that if a player does not seize the opportunity to perform, he is discarded...if GWJ is from another country, even INA, KOR or MAS, that will be a different story.

Gong Wei Jie was in the MD department for one year but he is now back in the single's department. He is in the same batch of juniors as Chen Jin, Tan Chun Seang, Lim Kenn. I find his name in the main draw of Taiwan Open

I think Mohd Arif and Lim Fang Yang performed better than their seniors in junior tourneys. Notably, Mohd Arif and Lim Fang Yang beat a number of top juniors players from China ,Indonesia and Japan in this year's Asian Juniors.

kwun's kids are possible future stars! ;) Just look at their intense interest in badminton! At such a tender age... Reminds me of a 3-year-old Tiger Woods who was in the Tonight's Show or Bob Hope's TV show... Tiger could hit decent golf shots as a 3-year-old... ;) By 5, Tiger could already beat amateur adults, they said...

Maybe kwun's kids..... can be the next US child prodigy... in badminton... ;) But the sponsorship money and prize money has to go up first, otherwise, the future of US citizens going pro in badminton is pretty bleak... :o

Hmm... some of the famous Indians are interestingly affiliated with Indonesia. Mittal, the steel billionaire from India, worked for years in Surabaya and can still speak Indonesian/Javanese. I heard he is now funding some Indian badminton players who have a bright future, like Saina Nehwal... :) She and Anup Sridhar are bringing excitement back to Indian Badminton... I Just watched the last Junior asian final between Arif and Chen Long, and eventhough Arif lost, i found him stronger than his opponent. Chen Long was just smashing and smashing over and over again, it made it really really boring, but Arif showed his skills and how talented he was. I won't say here Chen Long is a talented guy, mainly because i've always preferred players with skills and techniques.
I think malaysia can count on this young guy to shine in few years, and maybe after the OG 2008 .. =p

I still needs more info about rising women badminton players (includes XD pair too) to make this list more prefect :)

MAS MS:
Also Tan Aik Quan, Kuan Kam Chung, Teo Kok Siang.. but they're younger. Maybe too early to say whether they'll shine as future badminton stars..

MAS WS:
Julia Wong, Lydia Cheah.. and some players of the younger batch..

(Project squads' players: http://www.bam.org.my/about.php)

INA MD:
I'm not sure whether Yoke is 21 or 22.. Rian for sure is 22, turning 23 in November..

Fitriawan?? Is that Devin Lahardi..

Fernando Kurniawan is Fran Kurniawan's younger brother.

China MS:
There's also Chen Tianyu.

DEN MS:
Jan Ø. Jørgensen is not that old, he played Arif before in some junior tournament.. I think it's German juniors..

Rune Ulsing (24 y.o.) (photos: http://www.fjerbolden.dk/spillerne/ulsing.htm)

I think Michael is too old to be star, dont you think? as he is 26 yrs old....he may have a good 3 to 5 yrs to perform...

Elizabeth Alice Cann

Age: 26
..if Mr. Christensen is "too old", then Ms. Cann would be considered as "old" also..?!?!..:rolleyes:;)

I think Emma Mason is pretty too.. Here's her profile. Another rising star from Europe.
...another one of those gal which has your "girl-next-door" look..:)
In a way, i'm waiting for a European/non-Asian WD pair or pairs to rise to the top and start challenging the Asian WDs..It's been a very long while since professional badminton witness a non-Asian WD pair at or near the top of the WD world ranking (anyone knows/remembers when was the last time this happened?)..:p

Yup. It's Devin Lahardi Fitriawan, although I won't consider him as a future badminton "star" since he's turning 24. I don't think his partnership with Lingga Lie is going to be a top 10 pair. He has more chance in the XD with Lita Nurlita.

You are right, Rian Sukmawan is 22 going on 23, while Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki should be about the same age or 1 year younger. His former partner Yoga Ukikasah is 21 this year. Yes, I do hope Rian/Yoke do rise up the ranking table and hopefully be at least a semi-finalist in the 2009 World Championships  The same goes for Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan.

Indeed, Fernando Kurniawan is Fran's younger brother and currently in Pelatnas.

I also won't include Fauzi Adnan into the list

I agree completely! Saina Nehwal has to be on the 'future stars' list! She already said that she wants to become the 2012 London Olympics WS Champ. She will be in her early 20s then... maybe 23... :) Saina have to beat Jiang Yanjiao, Wang Yihan, Wang Lin, and other future Chinese stars for that title.... Hopefully Maria Febe will be in contention too... :p [That's just my hope laaaah] But by 2012, INA shall have some other exciting WS, I can't say for sure Febe can compete against her younger rivals at that time.... :o :o

Hey, nobody put Dyonisius Hayom Rumbaka for MS... :p Well, ok... I guess he hasn't won anything big internationally until today... :p He just won the MS Kalimantan Circuit... He is 19 [I think] and already the number 10-12 MS in Indonesia by now [if PBSI actually updates their INA rankings ]... By 2012, Hayom will be 23. Good age to be a contender... :D

From Europe maybe look out for HK Vittinghus of Denmark. He got as high as 47 in world until a horrible knee injury stopped him in his tracks in Aug 07. He is number 2 to Kenneth Jonasson as Greve in their premier division and is a lovely player.
Already has 2 EBU wins under his belt and is making a return to court this Feb 08. www.hkvittinghus.blogspot.com (http://www.hkvittinghus.blogspot.com)
Oh keep an eye out for Scott Evans of Irleland too. Best prospect from this neck of the woods in a long long time and is being personally trained by the great Jim Laugesen of Denmark. www.scottevansirl.com (http://www.scottevansirl.com)

Ok, can any of the BC members from Europe add the list of future badminton stars from Europe? Poland? Russia? Germany? Sweden? France? Spain? Italy?

How about from Africa or Australia or America? Anybody knows?

We have one big hope, who has the abillity to become a big champ. gabriel ulldahl (19years old) is he's name.

nahh.. Gabriel Ulldahl of Sweden is unlikely to be a ever reaching top 20 I would say (I hope I am wrong, but I donn't see a big potential in him)

Chen Long, China and Kenichi Tago, Japan are the biggest hope of world no.1 later as I see it.. But not all juniors can sustain the development curve.. But these two stand out as I see it!

Tago has proven that even the top players have to work hard to beat him..

Just for team Japan to hire Li Mao, to get him the last push on the senior scene :-D

We seem to be seeing a lot of Ji Xinpeng (Gold - Sydney OG 2000) these days.
He was last seen at courtside during the infamous Korea Open MS Final

He is also high up in Li Yongbo's good books.
Wonder what that means for Chen Long who is training under Ji Xinpeng

If I can remember clearly, Chen Long defeated Kenichi Tago last year in the finals during the KLRC World Junior Championships held in Waitakere, Auckland - NewZealand.

Kok Siang wants to be like his brother by winning a major junior tournament
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Teo Kok Siang is determined to emulate his brother in his final year as a junior.
Ten years ago, Kok Seng partnered Chan Chong Ming to win the world junior boys' doubles title.
For Kok Siang, he has failed to land a title in his last two campaigns in major junior tournaments at the Asian and world levels.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/7/18/sports/s_pg65siang.jpg Last chance: Teo Kok Siang (front) in action with Mak Hee Chun during the Asian Junior Championships yesterday.
This year, the 18-year-old Kok Siang is hoping to make a mark with his new and experienced partner Mak Hee Chun in the ongoing Asian Juniors at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara here.
They are the top seeds and began their campaign yesterday with a 21-4, 21-12 win over Iraq's Mustfa Mohd-Haider Mahdi Bashah.
Kok Siang-Hee Chun have an easy path to the quarter-finals where they are expected to play against South Koreans Kim Dae-eun-Kim Ki-eung.
Kok Siang said that he switched from singles play to the doubles this year.
“I was eight when my brother won the world junior title. His win inspired me to take up the game seriously,” said the Johorean.
“I started off as a singles player and joined the BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) four years ago. I did not win any major junior singles titles and the coaches decided that I should try my luck in the doubles.”
He has done well thus far with Hee Chun, winning the Dutch and German junior titles.
“The challenges from the Chinese, Koreans and Indonesian pairs will be stiffer in this Asian meet. Hee Chun is a very experienced player and I will try my best to complement him,” said Kok Siang.
“This is my last chance to do well in an Asian junior tournament and I hope to go as far as possible. Hopefully, a good showing will put me on track to become a national player.”
The other Malaysian boys' doubles pair also cleared the first round yesterday. Ow Yao Han-Pang Zheng Lin beat Michiharu Kido-Ryo Takiuchi of Japan 21-19, 16-21, 21-19.

i think arif has slowed down yet chen long has been improving as well as jorgensen... I see some future in china's Wang Zhengming from guangdong. He seems to have good attacking play in terms of steepness in his smash and fast drops and his quickness to follow his smash to the net. What he has to improve is his stamina cuz he seems to get exhausted faster than his opponents. This guy is probably unknown but he was world junior champion a year ago i think and had really good chances of beating park sun hwan in the china masters. Hope he can join china national team to improve much more.
