I just checked the online programme guide and realised that there will not be any live telecast of the semi-final and final matches on the Sports Channels. And yet the subscription rates have gone up!

SCV subscribers in Singapore, please understand. If you are unhappy about the pitiful badminton telecast, try and call 1633 to register your complaint otherwise SCV thinks badminton fans are happy with their limited badminton schedule.
There are 3 actionable options available:
1) Cancel SCV subscription
2) Cancel Sports Package
3) If you can't do 1) or 2) ,then call 1633 to ask why there's no badminton SS telecast. Let them know their oversight REGULARLY before each SS.So far , badminton fans have been subsidising EPL fans.
I have just done 2) and 3). it's not going to hurt their bottom line but it can make you feel better that you can direct the $25 monthly to some other more deserving cause.
Do something.Call or email.Complain to the right people. Not here.

Yes, you're right. Everyone here should starts writing or calling to starhub to wake them up that there are other sports to telecast as well beside always soccer, tennis and F1 formula race. Else, the monthly $25 pay are just subsidising those common sports that they telecast.

badminton is an international sport. just the quantity that want to watch which sport will determine the what will the tv going to show. as business, money comes first, profit is what the directors aim for. sponsorship to provide live telecast and who wants to place advertisement during that duration. advertisement on tv is calculated by how much of charge per seconds that they want to air it. less viewer/interest of that particular show/sport will be much more likely to be left out.
as pjswift said, get more people write in to the station or get the poll of most favourite sports.

It's sad that there's no live telecast for the SF matches on Starhub. I did as wat you advised, TERMINATED the sports channel, and used the S$25/month to buy a new pair of Yonex shoe :D

C'on, JO is one of the top SS and why no live telecast? I thought badminton is one of the top sports in SG?:mad::mad: I think we need Susilo to win a medal in OG08 to wake them up...

Btw, is RTM1 showing live telecast? If yes, we still can tune in Channel39 :p

i dont think that will awaken them.
as long as there is an european player/pair in a match, the commendator on channel 21, 22, 23 and 24 would all side with them in all the badminton games i've watch on those channels.

because the commendators and channels are european too, hence

we may need peter gade, tine rasmussen, clarke/blair, gail emms/kellogg/ clarke/donna kellogg all to win the OG08 for them to wake up :D

I have already wrote in to Starhub this morning to complain about poor coverage on Badminton Live telecast. But, I guess they may not reply so soon or probably not reply at all. :D
We need more people in this forum to either write in or call them to voice out our dissatisfaction like Pjswift mentioned.
Else, how much we talk here is not going to help for pushing of Live telecast of badmintion in Sports channel.

That's very good. They will reply cos they have to, maybe in a week or so.FYI the finals of the JO will be delayed telecast in mid OCT.Don't miss the MSF on 15 Oct, Mon 8pm LCWvsTH. 65 mins of breathtaking badminton.(Dates may change)
You can also call them before 6pm for same day response.
Important thing is they get many badminton queries so they know how popular badminton is in Singapore.
First time I ever called them years ago, they said nobody called so they gathered nobody's interested.
SCV judge demand by the number of queries they receive. So please keep calling or emailing.Ask and you will get, if not now, then in future with new budgeting.
In the meantime I'm a JB weekend badminton tourist if the sf and f matches are good.
Actually Astro should consider marketing their telecast through the internet. I know some Japanese TV networks do that for their programmes.

Actually it might work faster if the letter is written to the press comment pages - by any company standard, they will surely reply to an open letter like that.

But as pjswift says, and to be fair to Starhub, there are delayed telecast. Like the China Open they braodcasted few weeks back.

I know it is not as good as live telecast, but in the likes of football, tennis, golf, which almost guarantee the channel a sponsor, I can understand from financial stand point why badminton is not Starhub favourite.

Although I very much like to see every SS live, I have to adjust my expectation. That way, I live happier.

pjswift

Agree with you, Linus. Writing to the press is more effective (if it gets published) I don't mind drafting out the letter provided it can be supported by many of the Spore members to have more clout with numbers. There's no need for names, just the SCV account number but we need a lead name as the writer. I cannot use my real name because it's not a common name. If any of you have a common name then it'll be great to use that, eg John Tan (as in NRIC) or you don't mind to volunteer your name.
Actually you are a good thinker and writer so maybe you have a go at the draft and everyone pitch in to make it better. How about it?

It was so pathetic for the China Open delayed telecast. It was screened at odd hour and break up to few days. I find that very disrupting, becos' after watching one match then no more... you have to either have to wait till the next day or few days later for another match to be shown.
Look at how long they broadcast the Golf tournament... Tennis...F1 Formula Race basically every week, how many matches of EPL in a week. Now they added American Football in ESPN. Badminton??? No where to be found or once in a blue moon. Sigh...

Yes, I agree with all u guys and I'm quite dissapointed with Starhub. Being a small fry, there's nothing I can do but to terminate my subscribtion (Did that).

I have a question here: Starhub Cable service is a paid service, why do they need sponsorships/ads to FUND the the sports rights and air for viewers? Perhaps all the FUNDS go into EPL and F1 and golf???:mad:

Linus
09-23-2007, 10:13 PM
Ok, as promised here is the draft. Let's see if you guys have anything else to add. I am happy to send this just using my name alone, but if anyone else want to chip in you may need to send me your full name by PM so that I could add to the end of the letter (press only accept real names). It would only be meaningful to send it as a group if there are about 20 names, otherwise I just change all the "we" to "I" and send it out using my name alone.

We are a group of badminton enthusiast who wish to express our disappointment on the coverage of badminton in the Starhub Cable’s Sports Channels.

Despite badminton being the most favourite racket sport in Singapore, and also a sport with rich tradition and a great number of followers in this region, we are surprised how little air time is given to this sport in the local cable channels as compare to the like of tennis and golf. Not to mention even wrestling has more coverage.

Granted that we do see live coverage when All Englands, World Championships or Singapore Opens are around, but there are many other top class tournaments that have been given a miss. A case in point is the recently concluded Japan Open, part of the 12 annual Super-Series events in the world badminton calendars, was not covered at all.

We are not asking for unreasonable amount of air time, but rather give badminton a balanced coverage and allocate a proportionate amount of exposure. Let’s take the program on Channel 22 Super Sports from 21/Sep to 27/Sep for example: there are 36 hours of golf, 28 hours of tennis, 8 hours of table tennis but only a miserable 30 minutes slot on badminton. Even wrestling has a solid 2-hours time slot for 5 days that add to a total of 10 hours air time. This is not a fair distribution of air time on badminton in relation to its popularity and following here in Singapore.

Let us not also forget that there are many Chinese, Malaysian and Indonesian who have taken up residency here in Singapore. Badminton is an even bigger game in their countries and I am sure they will also be happy if they see more badminton coverage in the cable channels.

We hope that the management of Starhub does not under-estimate the popularity and the appeal (and thus the commercial potential) of badminton in Singapore. We also hope that we can see better coverage on badminton in the upcoming months and into the future.

No, there's no need to pay extra for badminton. Badminton fans pay more than enough. Cricket is different. Badminton is the most popular sport after soccer, probably a close second, in Singapore. The problem is SCV is too ignorant or refuse to recognise that fact, hence its' sports schedule for ch 21 and 22 reflects sheer complacency.
But look how your complaints have got them working. The first reply promised delayed telecast. The latest reply indicated 'live' telecast. Wow, your complaints (and your subscription termination possibly) are more effective than mine. Thanks and keep giving them feedback.
Anyway, I have a couple more points to add to Linus' draft after some more research. In the meantime, pls add your names (and your buddies' names , with their support ,of course) to Linus' list. Yes, I was a little disspointed when ST chose to put the letter on the on-line version rather than print version.

Thank you for writing to us.

We receive 70 letters on average each day. Limited space means we can publish only about a
dozen in the print edition of The Straits Times.

However, we have created the ST Online Forum (http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/ST%2BForum.html (http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/ST%2BForum.html)) so
that more views can be aired. Your letter has been published online.

Although it still get published, the impact of it not on the printed version is considerable less for StarHub to respond publicly their stand. You will notice other sports supporters are now piggy-backing asking for more times on arm-wrestling, chess, sepak takraw etc... sigh! :o

To address Mr Wee's concerns on StarHub Digital Cable's badminton coverage, StarHub has aired some major badminton tournaments 'live' such as the Sudirman Cup, All England Championship and the World Championships earlier this year. Mr Wee can look forward to the delayed telecasts of the Japan Open and Danish Open from Oct 15 to 16 and Nov 19 to 20, respectively, as well as the 'live' telecasts of the final day of the BWF Super Series Grand Final on SuperSports in December.

In addition, local badminton fans can get news on badminton from the magazine programme World Of Badminton on SuperSports and SuperSports Plus. Viewers may refer to the On-screen TV Guide or StarHub's Online Programme Guide at www.starhub.com/cabletv for the telecast schedules.
We sincerely hope that we have adequately answered the concerns of Mr Wee, Mr Kok and Mr Tan, and we look forward to the continued support of sports fans in Singapore.

Caitlin Fua Corporate Communications Manager StarHub

Although she is not very forthcoming on the live telecast, she did promised the final of the SS Final in Dec will be live. I hope this is the begaining of more to come in 2008 (finger crossed!).

Dear Linus,

I always call starhub to inform them why there is no live coverage for badminton. I always complain to starhub as I cannot see the match live. Even during the delayed telecast, they usually cut it short or the match is not shown due to the having live matches on.My complaint fell into the deaf ears.
Thank You.
