What are some of the better stores for badminton equipment? Thanks.

Dave

Try Rackets&Runners on Oak and King Edward, they carry quite a selection for Yonex. Tad's Sporting Goods on Granvile and 70th has better pricing compare to R&R, in my opinion.

Hi Martin,
There are a couple. For example Tad's Sporting Goods down on Granville/72nd and Abby's on Main/33rd.

As for me, I'm getting into the business to be the agent for Winex equipment for Western Canada. If you are interested in trying out the racquets, give me a shout and let me know where you play (time & place) and I will bring a couple of the racquets out (e.g. Ti-9, Ti-3 & Ti-20 - all strung at 22 lbs).

Cheers,
Peter

The big mall places, like sport check and sport mart. For higher end stuff, try Tads Sporting Goods, or Racquets and Runners.

Personally i've was pretty happy w/ my purchase experience at Tads, they're not super cheap but they have good selection of higher end stuff, and reasonable prices.

Tad's has a very good selection of different brands which includes Prince, Babolat, Carlton, Yonex, Winex.

Other places includes Abbie's on Main/33rd (westside of Main) or you can try the pro shops at the various clubs like VRC, VLTC, etc.

Rackets and Runners have three locations; the Vancouver one is located on Oak/W. 24th and the one in Richmond is located at Steveston Hwy/No. 3 Rd and the last location is in Coquitlam.

you might run into the travelling badminton store! Jim usually makes his rounds daily to most community centers throughout the lower mainland. he's an older asian fellow, who carries in a rather large bag, and almost on cue, all the regulars will swarm him to take a look at his offerings, or just pick up some loose ends like grips and shuttles. He usually carries a range of racquets, prices are okay, or comparable.

Hey SL, it's probably lot easier to tell him which center you are at, he'll probably make the trip there.

In the past, wherever i happen to go, if he is not aware of it, he will make a special trip to go there. anywhere there is a badminton playing, he will make plans to attend. he likes driving around anyways, he is used to it from his daytime job....

which ones do you play at. maybe just different times, or mainly adult sessions that he attends...

in general i know he goes stops by Cameron on Monday and Friday evenings, Guildford on Saturday morning and night, Cambie Comm center on weekdays, varies on the days he comes, but usually two or three times a week he will be there.
Britannia on Saturday afternoon, BCIT on Sundays.

As for the other centers, are the ones he mentions to me about his route.

mainly killarney, renfrew, and bonzer, but i stop by alot of other centers too. so do u know when they stop by at those centers?

Can anyone tell me where can I find badminton stores in Vancouver?
Haven't found one so far.
I can only find equipment in such stores as SportMart n SportChek, which sell little.
I'm looking for a sport store that sells strictly badminton stuff.

And also, can anyone recommend someone/place who do the stringing?

Thanks.

Absinthe.

For store that sells strictly badminton stuff, you will be looking at pro shops but even the racquet hovel at VRC sells squash & racquet ball stuff. Only one that I know is Darryl's which only sell Forza stuff. :D

Tad's or Abbie's do good stringing although I have heard that Abbie's would not string above recommended tension.

bmsupport: Hey - if you're in Vancouver, it wouldn't be a complete visit without playing a few games with the local BF'ers. Bring your racquets and gear along, or if you are in a shopping mood buy and try them out with us! Lots of gyms to play in!

wunderbar
06-23-2003, 09:41 PM
Yup, you should definitely play a bit of badminton with the local BF'ers. I was out there a fews ago and it was fun! Watch out for Baddy's backhand..it might kill ya..haa. I actually checked out Tad's while I was out there and they have a wide selection but the price isn't the best. However, if money is not a problem then they'll probably have what you're looking for. You could also try out some Winex racquets if you get a chance to convince WWC to join you for some baddy. I ended up buying a demo JooBong off WWC since I liked the look and feel of the racquet.

Of course I don't reply if ppl are asking for an armortec 700 or 500.. because as I said before in my post.. I can't order them yet :O

ANYWAYS for sure if you're in Vancouver.. come play at the VRC with us :)

Heck.. i joined the club because of these BF guys..and the BF meet we had on that saturday night a while back.. lol

And if you need yonex stuff.. yep you can talk to me about that.

If I don't remember wrong, u can contact "badrad" from this forum. He lives in Vancourver, and he's an experienced stringer.

I have learned a lot from him, when I started to learn how to string back then.

badrad

Thanks LB. Glad to have been of help. Certainly when I started stringing way back when, everything was self-taught, no one around to learn from.

Lately, little badrad does all the stringing. Her eyes are sharper than mine, as I need to switch glasses when doing some of the closeup threading.

Patman18: There are plenty of decent stringers in the Vancouver area, most of them hiding... It really depends on your location. There are stringers who frequent different clubs and centers, and it is a simple matter of asking a few of the players at these clubs you play at to locate a stringer. Almost every club I have been to there are at least a couple stringers at each.

If you prefer to bring to a shop, Tads (near 64 and Granville) does good work and reliable.

If you are in Richmond, Clearone on No. 3 Rd offers stringing service and the price is very reasonable. Advantage there is you are getting string job done by someone who is a player as well, so they will likely know better what they are doing and why.

Avoid as much as possible those mall sport shops, you really do not want to trust your racquet to some jock who has recieved a crash course on stringing tennis racquets and applying that little knowledge to badminton.

I didn't see a database to show where to get the best equipment and best deal in vancouver, so I start this thread. Hope everyone post their info.

Yonex Isometric 90 VFS - SportCheck (Richmond Center) gift so don't know the price
Adidas Downroar - Sportmart (Cambie and 8th Ave) $69.95
BG 68 Ti - Tad's Sport Shop (Granville and 70th Ave) $25 include labour

I don't think Tad's has the best deal on BG-68Ti. ClearOne is probably a few dollars cheaper.

If you want a deal on Gosen strings, however... well, I don't want to get banned from the forum, so I better shut up. :o ;)

Racket Testing: Rackets and Runners
Grip: Tads
Rackets: Abbies (basically right outside VRC) - on Main if i recall

Stringing: Always used Abbies, but I don't really like their latest work. I'm going to switch to tads soon I think.

604badder

I've used Abbies on main too, as well as Tads. There seems to be one guy out of the rotation at Abbies that doesn't do as good a job with the knots.

Last I remember it was $22 I think for stringing, $10 if you bring your own.

A waste of $22 ... I cut my strings as soon as I got home from Abbies (first and last time), and dropped it off at Rackets/Runners later that evening. Consistent quality every time, but at a premium ... $32 for Babolat electronic pull stringing machine. You won't be disappointed, unless you lament about the price.

Welcome to BF and Vancouver! As for baddy stores in VAN, there's Tad's along Granville and 70th Ave. Racquets and Runners as well as Abbies carry high-end Yonex racquets and accessories. You could search the forum for the other two stores' address or look it up in the phonebook. Happy Hunting:)!

Sigh* Im starting to get really Annoyed and Dissapointed by how abbies are stringing Racquets...... My friend had his racquets strung with BG-80 on 23lbs on his MP88(old)... when he got it back... it didn't really feel like 23lbs.. and it boke within 2 weeks...and he only played for less then 6 hours... and we have a tournament next week... now i'm telling him not to string at abbies anymore, cuz the quility in their recent work have really been lacking... now personally i think Sportschek at Station square does a better job. my 2 cents

ps: do you guys think that my friend can ask abbies for a refund or some sort of thing as an apology

Well you could try, but I doubt it. It helps if you go to the shop immediately after the strings broke, but also depends if they broke in the middle (sweet spot) or around the edges, which would mean they broke because of a miss-hit. You could argue about breaking in the sweet spot so soon after it was strung but if it broke from a miss-hit, it's most likely his own fault. Generally, unless the strings were broken very soon after it was strung, stores won't give you anything because it can be argued that a lot could have happened to the racquet with the more time elapsed after the stringing. At least you know you don't like Abbies anymore and can seek a new stringing service. I've broken strings 5 HITS after receiving my racquet from a stringer, and all I got was a sympathetic smile :p.

Have never had my racquet strung by Abbies or C1 but I can tell you that of all the retailer stringers... Tad's probably has the most experience and the best track record among them. However, I think most of the club players go to private stringers. Ask around.

Hey,
Kinda new to the forums.. 1st post actually.
This ain't about where to play.. more about where good places are to buy equipment. I'm in the GVRD (greater vancouver) thought it'd be easier to get a good answer in here. I was wondering where some good places are to look for racquets, strings, grips etc. Just ur favorite stores, helpful workers all that. Anywhere around.. richmond/surrey even langley or vancouver are good. I got some friends going back east in the summer.. but thats kinda far away.

The stores that get mentioned often on this forum are:

1. Tads Sporting Goods
2. Rackets and Runners (overpriced)
3. Abbies (can bargain)
4. ClearOne
5. FlexPro

all in the Vancouver area. In addition, clubs like VRC have in-house stores that sell rackets, do re-stringing etc.

Do a search on the forum for their contact numbers, and WELCOME to BadmintonForum. :D

You can call around to get a general idea of prices, then compare with Rackets and Runners. Their tennis grips are about CAD 1.50 more than other places, and rackets (depending on model) are maybe CAD 20 more, I think.

3RD TIME AND IT CAME UP WIH A FATAL MEMORY ERROR IN THE BROWSER

*expletive* IT

insert expletives

2nd time and it didnt work

stupid... it took me 15 minutes to type a post and when i clicked post, it just told me to log in again and i lost my whole post...

okay here i go

im going to vancouver on monday from victoria. intending to go to some badminton shops to get some nice string (bg66 plz) and a new racquet (mp99 nebody?)

any shops in vancouver worth visiting? im looking for good selection (more than just yonex, plz have diff brands), cheap prices, and a good stringing policy (good record 2)

ive been to impulse sports i was just visiting and i saw a nice selection of racquets, but i found them a bit expensive and they only had yonex.

anybody have shops in vancouver with cheap prices, and nice selection and friendly salesmen?

ps.

fierce competition for the money:

mp99 vs mp100 vs ns7k ns8k sl70 vs cab30 (ms/sp)

as for the mp99

g4 g5?
3u 4u?

3u= too head heavy now?
4u=loss of power?

g4=too head heavy and a bit too large with karakal pu grip
g5=too teeny? and loss of power?

any advantages over the other racquets vs mp99? i have a mp66 but it has some limits

big grip (g3)
extremely handle heavy
psychological effects (used too long)

strings? bg66 for repulsion paired with mp99? 23 pounds okay (1 pound over limit, will they still let me under the stringing policy?)

regards,

jc

(im typing this in shorthand and without punctuation in fear of the login time limit... ill copy and paste this whole message just in case...)

oh and also what do you think of cab20 series? (cab21 22 etc) i know somebody here is going to persuade me into a cab...

oh and also, whats the cheapest you have ever seen a 2005 model mp99 for sale? 250? hmm??

3rd reply

and also, i notice this: 5 mp99s at store such and such

1 mp99 is lets say 85 grams
one is 84
one is 86

does it really matter?

A search will yield your answers.

In Vancouver, perhaps the most selection you'll find is at Tad's Sporting Goods, located at Granville and 70th. Do a search for their hours and phone number.

Cheapest? Perhaps at Tad's (retail).

Another place is at ClearOne in Richmond. Also Racket's and Runners but their prices are over-priced, guaranteed, and by a lot too.

Save your trip to Abbies... they have mostly soccer and baseball paraphernalia. The baddy section is pretty much limited to the top of the lines. Last time I checked, they have no CABS there. Oh, and don't get your stringing done there.

okay, my grandma likes to shop at parker place, so ill get dropped of there and make clearone my first stop

255 for a mp99 is not that bad considering what we have in victoria.. :0

mediocre weight differences?

thanks for your info everybody

There are a few stores I would trust my racquet with them, but it's easier for you to ask around where you usually play. Most regular players have their own personal stringer to go to.

The reason there hasn't been many postings is because this topic has been discussed many many times before. Please make full use of the search functions for: Vancouver, Tads, Abbies, ClearOne, and then terms you find from that.

DO NOT STRING YOUR RACKETS at ABBIES ...
DO NOT STRING YOUR RACKETS with Kyle at Rackets and Runners. Anybody else (at Rackets and Runners) is fine.

-dave

I hear you there wood_22_chuck..... My abbies stringing losened up very quickly 2 times in a row. Same racquet, same tension at Tads, held up for much longer (on the order of weeks). Maybe abbies's stringer's knots aren't very good.

Tad's is just an awesome store. They often deviate from sticker price like yesterday I bought a tube of mavis 300 for $12 when the sticker price was $13.95 ! They have lots of sales too.

cappy75
08-17-2005, 12:54 AM
There's also a 10% discount at Tad's if you're a Vancouver Racquets Club member. I believe it covers only shoes and racquets, but they extend the discount to me for some grips the last time I was there.

I heard more about Abbies from Tad's since this was brought up and wanted to find out more. Their strining machine is not reliable since it's not calibrated properly which can explain the tentions and it was also a second hand machine. Also about the breakage, they were not mounting the rackets properly.

Vancouver and area

I can have it done for you the same day.
I've been stringing for many years
I'll do it for $16 with yonex BG65 or $10 with your own strings

FYI: each racquet has different specs and i'll string to each racquet maker's spec and the tension you like.

email me if you are interested.

they've a good source of RSL and MMOA rackets. They're all pretty good, better than some yonex items on the market i would say.

They've some shoes that are pretty nice too, and the best part is they're cheap compare to yonex and other brands.
