View Full Version : French Open 2007 - Day 6 - Nov 4th - Finals
robin7 11-03-2007, 12:39 PM Lee Chong Wei vs Bao Chunlai - Lee has been phenomenal without dropping a game enroute to the final while Bao who beat his teammate LD for the first time this year will be so motivated to win his first title of the year. A 55:45 game in Lee's favor..
Xie Xingfang vs Pi Hongyan - A 60:40 game in Xie's favor. Having the homeground support, Pi is all fired up after knocking down Lu Lan and Zhang Ning.
Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun vs Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah - The MAS veterans have been playing very well this week and they will be all out to redeem themselves after sufferring a shock defeat in round one of last week's Danish Open. Fu/Cai are so motivated to avenge their losses at WC and Macau Open. Choong/Lee to win in 3 thrilling sets.
Wei Yili-Zhang Yawen vs Zhao Tingting-Yu Yang - The top seeds should win.
Xie Zhong Bo-Zhang Yawen vs Flandy Limpele-Vita Marissa - A 45:55 game and the INA pair should it.
apontoh 11-03-2007, 12:48 PM Lee Chong Wei vs Bao Chunlai - 65-35. LCW is in phenomenal form. I'll have to agree that he's the only guy that can truly beat LD at the moment...so Bao will continue to be Mr Runner Up, for now..
Xie Xingfang vs Pi Hongyan - 55-45. Xie is in good form but Pi seems to be on a roll, with the support of the home crowd. However, Pi has been runner up in the last 2 french opens ((?)correct me if I'm wrong), and not sure if she can make it this time.
Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun vs Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah- I think this is 50-50 match, but if it goes to rubber, the Chinese will win it as they are younger with greater stamina.
Wei Yili-Zhang Yawen vs Zhao Tingting-Yu Yang - As part of LYB's scenario to raise Zhao/Yu's ranking. Yawn.
Xie Zhong Bo-Zhang Yawen vs Flandy Limpele-Vita Marissa - 45-55 for the INdonesians, hope they can bring INA's sole title tomorrow.
Inky2000 11-03-2007, 12:50 PM At last year's AE, MAS was humiliated by having 3 pairs of MD in semis but ended up letting CHN takle the title.
Now, can LCW turn the table and execute revenge for MAS by winning French SS title despite of having CHN occupied 3 semi slots?
Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun vs Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah- I think this is 50-50 match, but if it goes to rubber, the Chinese will win it as they are younger with greater stamina.
Being one of the three still active MD pairs in the world who are having better head-to-head records against Feng Yun to date (the other two pairs are KKK/TBH and LP/JR), , CTF/LWW has proven twice that stamina is not necessarily an issue to them - i.e., they managed to beat CY/FHF in 3 sets in 2 occasions - the latest was at WC'07 (and at the third set, the score was 21-19, a really energy-draining set and yet CTF/LWW made it).
Lee Chong Wei vs Bao Chunlai :
Should be a good one and CW will be the favorite base on his current form, however, Bao's confidence is flying high after defeated Lin Dan and now facing CW who he beat just 1 week ago. If Bao able to defend as well as they last encountered then Bao shall emerge as winner. Advantage CW with fresher body.
Xie Xingfang vs Pi Hongyan :
Unless Pi plays extra ordinary or Xie nerves get to her again like in World Championship, I don't see how Xie can lose. Can local crowd forceful enough to push Pi over Xie? Unlikely, as the fanatics still stay here in BF :D
Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun vs Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah :
Under normal circumstances, I would say Lee/Choong have Fu/Cai number but not in the final. The Malaysian pair has proven they can beat any pair, any where, any time except in the final. They can beat no one in the final except their own countryman and that tradition will continue, unfortunately.
Wei Yili-Zhang Yawen vs Zhao Tingting-Yu Yang :
Next ...
Xie Zhong Bo-Zhang Yawen vs Flandy Limpele-Vita Marissa :
I like the Indonesian pair, very flexible, experience and creative.
ctjcad 11-03-2007, 02:02 PM ..one heck of a 1 titillating Finals for the home crowd as well as many BCers in here...With many very2 interesting rematches set on the table for the Finals..
- Lady Pi will be out to redeem herself against XXF, after the former's defeat in this yr's All England WS Final..It should be one entertaining match. And i have the feeling the crowd will be buzzing and in full support of their Badminton Lady...
- CTF & LWW vs. CY & FHF, the 2 nemesis meet again. Another rematch of these 2 pairs, who seem to meet each other at every tourneys..:p:cool:
- LCW vs. BCL. This one should provide some firecracker. I'm sure all the injuries talk, suffered by LCW, from last week's Denmark Open, will surf up again...Will LCW fight thru the pain and redeem himself this time around??...
We shall see all of it later today...And let all the talks of his "supposed" injury resumes...:p

Let me do the dirty work, and get it started...
When a player really is injured, he more than likely play like Chen Jin did today.
When Lin Dan hurt himself in Swiss open, he couldn't even get a point from Simon in the 2nd set, and had to forfeit at 6-0... forget about owning Simon like LCW did.
When two top players are both playing injured, the score line should not be 21-8, 21-8...
As good as Taufik is, when he played Lin Dan(who was injury-free) in Thomas cup 06 bearing injury, he lost 21-16, 21-8... and Taufik even lost to Sato from Japan... Not even close to what LCW is doing so far... that is just B.S.
All this talk about worry of hurting himself more... is nothing but B.S. He is PERFECTLY FINE FROM THE START!!!!!!!
I honestly like to find out how you can heal a hurt knee in a few days... I am only 4 years older than LCW, and I need about a week to 10 days to heal my sore knee(after my tournament) even without playing a tight schedule like him.

i watched that match live......he was really troubled by his knee injury. playing an extremely slow game, non attacking game at all, like playing ala Morten Frost style. no diving saves..........even sometimes he knew that he could save the shots by doing it.
nothing that i've seen from LCW these few years, playing so slowly, afraid to further deteriorate the injury, my granny can move faster (kidding)......:D:D:D

Then how slow was Chen Jin??? Was he like much worse, because that's what the score-line suggested... At the same time, if LCW wasn't suffering from knee pain, then I guess Chen Jin would have lost with a lower score???

alfa-2, so you watched the game live...
Then what about CJ? Why did he played so bad? Was he seriously injured as well? Just really curious... LCW's winning is understandable, cos he is really a good player, but I did not expect the result was 8-21, 8-21 in LCW favour. What was happening to CJ?

Chen Jin was definitely moving faster than LCW, attacking LCW most of the time.......just that LCW played extremely well and anticipated most of Chen Jin's shots, LCW played a class higher than Chen Jin despite both were having injuries at that time........behaving much like an in form KKK in front of the net.........
and yes, chen jin would have gotten a lower score. and chen jin only showed his pain (face expression) on his injury in the middle of 2nd game when LCW was leading faraway.

Chen Jin looks so dizzy. I don't know what's wrong with him but he was definitely not himself. During the 2nd set, I thought he would retire. After each rally, he would bend for some time and take some more time before being ready to receive the next serve.

I think CJ became clueless when LCW put on a totally different game plan........lobbing more (at least 3 times as more), a game plan that wouldn't differ much from yang yang or hanjian. CJ could have done better if he was a smarter player like LD (i think LD is the best MS thinker currently) or BCL.........figuring a way to counter the new but injured LCW.
Besides all these, he was carrying a back injury as well.

yeah, i saw Chen Jin shaking his head like he was drowsy, squatting down a few times after middle of 2nd set.
fastdrop 11-03-2007, 05:00 PM I have not doubted LCW's talent. I know he can beat Chen Jin with or without injury. However, today was entirely different. Something is really wrong with Chen Jin. Trust me. He looks drowsy.

Chen Jin appears ok in the first set. LCW's pending shots taught Chen Jin to dance the "cha cha". LCW has totally controlled the tempo of the match.
During the 2nd set, CJ looks dizzy. I can't tell if he is tired but something was so wrong he could hardly be ready for the next serve.
I was so impressed with the gesture of LCW in the final minutes of the 2nd match. Instead of pounding the last nail to CJ's coffin, LCW merely gives CJ clear shots waiting for him to commit an error which CJ eventually did. A true gentlemen. He did not step on a fallen foe. Bravo LCW.
yeah they each lobbed for like 14 times continuously before CJ gave the match point to LCW by hitting the shuttle out.;) it reminded me of those days where we're trained to do lobbings.
F-38-I 11-03-2007, 07:46 PM Bao CL 49-51 LCW
Bao & LCW so far had good result, still predict LCW but yesterday team order maybe prepared for this match because their last meeting won by BCL (It's like Bunga Citra Lestari). Like CHN always send BCL to beat Taufik.
Fu/Cai 57-43 CTF/LWW
No doubt that no CHN MD except Fu/Cai that can get a minimal final result. So, it's a prestige for CHN. Also CTF/LWW has a tremendous pressure on their back. Still Fu/Cai has the edge
Xxf 49,5-50,5 Pi
Not a good match for XXF on last match, and a nice play by Pi, should place Pi on the predicition.
WY/ZYW 00-00 ZT/YY
It could be team order and it must be boring. It must be an easy match for ZYW, cos she is prepared only for mix double.
Flandy/Vita 55-45 XZB/ZYW
Hmm, all the second pairs from the best XD countries (CHN vs INA). With their experience, Flandy/Vita should win!

bananakid, did you even watch the match? Here you are again trying to make unfound allegations against Lee. Everyone that watched the match, and I suspect this does not include you, agreed that Lee was injured. Slower movement, more passive play ala Morten. So can you seriously stop bullshitting and just accept that Lee is injured for once?
LI De Quan 11-03-2007, 08:13 PM :DLD don't want to play against LEE CW , so he gave up yesterday!!

MEN'S SINGLES
Bao Chunlai vs Lee Chongwei -- no doubt, Lee Chong Wei is out to avenge his loss to Bao last week and he should win the title today! That will be his 3rd Super Series titles this year!
MEN'S DOUBLES
Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah vs Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun -- Choong/Lee are also fired up after the many near-misses in several Finals this year. It will be a 50-50 match against Fu/Cai, but, if they can calm their nerves, they should beat the pair they have beaten twice in recent months.
WOMEN'S SINGLES
Pi Hongyan vs Xie Xingfang -- Xie will take home the title.
WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen vs Yu Yang/Zhao Tingting -- yawn...it might be another WO.
MIXED DOUBLES
Xie Zhongbo/Zhang Yawen vs Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa -- despite many of you saying that Flandy/Vita have an advantage over the Chinese pair, they have lost once to Xie/Zhang. Hopefuly, Flandy/Vita can rise up to the occassion and win their second Super Series titles.
george@chongwei 11-04-2007, 12:56 AM my prediction
LCW vs BCL
LWW/CTF vs CY/FHF
PHY vs XXF
ZTT/YY vs ZYW/WYL
Flandy/Vita vs XZB/ZYW
george@chongwei 11-04-2007, 01:01 AM I think 99.99% people in this forum will predict LEE to win his thirdSuper Series title.
hope that LEE CHONG WEI will win his 3rd superseries title tonight.:)

vching 11-04-2007, 01:02 AM predictions:
Predictions for the finals of the inaugural French Super Series:
Lee Chong Wei vs. Bao Chunlai
Viewers were deprived of a Lee Chong Wei vs. Lin Dan match up when Bao edged Lin Dan in three thrilling sets yesterday, defying his horrendous record against the Chinese southpaw. Lee easily swept past an exhausted Chen Jin, and would be out to avenge his shock defeat in the hands of the Chinese last week in the semifinals of the Danish Open in Odsense. Bao aka. Mr Runner Up unfortunately, or fortunately for Malaysians, will achieve another runner up position, making it his FOURTH runner up in a Super Series event (Malaysian Open, Indonesian Open, Denmark Open). I predict Lee in 2 relatively tight sets.
Choong/Lee vs. Cai/Fu
Another exciting encounter, with the Chinese wanting to make up for their consecutive loses in Macau and Kuala Lumpur. Choong and Lee swept past the Japanese killers who took out reigning world number 1 Koo and Tan. Encounters between these two pairs have always been of the highest standard, and I believe this will be no different. As to who would actually win this match, it all depends whether Choong and Lee can maintain their attack and focus. Cai and Fu's strategy will be to tire out and seep the stamina of Choong and Lee. However, the veterans know better than to allow that. Choong and Lee in 3 sets.

LCW to win over BCL
After yesterdays easy match over Chen Jin, and BCL taxing himself to beat Lin Dan in a 3 set thriller, I must fancy LCW's chances here. It will also be a chance to exact revenge over his DO Semi's exit to BCL, The Mr Runner Up.
Hopefully, for Malaysians and LCW, that will be the case for tonight.
MD
FHF/CY over CTF/LWW
Since CTF/LWW has not won an Open international event since 2004 (Dutch Open). (excluding Sea Games, Commonwealth, Asian Champ titles of course)
I find it hard to believe that things will change now. FHF/CY to win in any manner of style.
WS
XXF over Pi
What is normally an easy call to make, Pi's recent performance and strong crowd support has beaten the odds for the past few matches. Will she do it again? Very unlikely. but then again, she's already proven us wrong.
WD
I have no opinion on this match actually. will they play? :D
XD
Flandy/Vita over ZJW/XZB
A very tough call. Believe the indonesians to take the title with their flair and match temprement for big events and even bigger crowd. I expect the flambouyant veteran Flandy to play a major role in sweeping the win on the opening match of the finals.
jasonmarc 11-04-2007, 01:22 AM And my prediction is....
BCL over LCW - LCW is still injured,...he beat CJ easily because CJ was down with injury not because LCW play so well....and BCL is determine to win a title after so many tries......and also LCW usually fail when every body is expecting him to win...
CY/FHF Over LWW/CTF - MAS pair as usual will colaspe in final...just like the previous 2 AE finals.....and CY/FHF will also very determine to revange over MAS pair last 2 defeat....and also a typical MAS players will lost when every body expecting them to win....

LOL and LOL. Fastdrop is in France watching it live in the stadium. He flew all the way to Denmark and France to watch these two SS. SO, we have been getting juicy off the tv news from him.

madbad 11-04-2007, 01:38 AM LCW v BCL. How badly is LCW injured? This certainly factors big time into the match. LYB has already played all his cards by "allowing" Bao to make the final; remember Bao beat LCW in the last tournament. LCW has added a much better strategic game plan to his arsenal and if his injury persists, may need to think his way past Bao. Those old school type long rallies may come into play again. This is not an easy match to call, despite many already crowning Lee the champion. That said, I think LCW will have the minutest of edges in the end. Expect a tough 3 game slog.
FHF/CY v CTF/LWW. Here's the difference; the CHN duo know how to win finals while the MAS pair have choked at this stage. Could be 3 tight games going either way if the MAS oldies can get into the CHN boys' heads, or FHF/CY are going to blow the geriatrics out of the water.
PHY v XXF. A most intriguing match up. On the one hand, you have one of the most dominant women players in the game oozing with physical skills and talent. On the other, you have the cast off, smaller in stature but a tenacious fighter. It's going to boil down to 3 things: Will Pi get stage fright in front of the expectant home crowd? Or will she galvanize the energy from her rabid supporters? Mental strength–if Pi can break Xie mentally, then it's definitely game-on. The longer the match goes, the better chance Pi has. I just have this feeling.... and she's cute too :D
WD... next (boo!)
Zhang/Xie v Vita/Flandy. Don't really have much of an opinion on this one as this match lacks the drama the others can generate. However, I like the way the INA pair has been playing and they should pull through.
abedeng 11-04-2007, 01:40 AM At last year's AE, MAS was humiliated by having 3 pairs of MD in semis but ended up letting CHN takle the title.
Now, can LCW turn the table and execute revenge for MAS by winning French SS title despite of having CHN occupied 3 semi slots?
Correction. At last year's AE, CHN didn't take the MD title. The aged Danes Lundgaard/Eriksen did.
abedeng 11-04-2007, 01:52 AM LCW v BCL. I will go with slight advantage to BCL. LCW was impressive last night, but one could see that he cannot be as explosive as he normally does. It will not be easy to play Bao by keeping purely to rallying play. As for BCL, he has to step up to win this, being Mr Runnerup too many times might just affect his mental capacity esp if the game is close.
FHF/CY v CTF/LWW. CY is back at his best, compared to last week. Choong/Lee will have their backs to the wall, despite their achievements, their usually solid defence is not quite so solid this week.
PHY v XXF. On paper, Double X has a clear edge. But cute Pi has the capability to rattle Double X. Might even get more help from the line judges (boo!!!). Double X is temperamental, either she is brilliant or she is not. Yesterday almost forced to a rubber by WMC.
WD... many boos!! Title could even be given on silver platter to ZTT/YY.
Zhang/Xie v Vita/Flandy. Flandy's deceptive arrays of shots totally destroyed the Danes in the 2nd game. INA should put a lot of pressure to Xie Zhongbo to take this match.
Winnie Lim1314 11-04-2007, 02:03 AM Malaysia Boleh!!!LCW and CTF/LWW boleh!!!

robin7 11-04-2007, 02:38 AM I was watching the match between LCW & CJ live. Obviously, LCW was injured and he couldn't move very well during the warm-up. CJ, on the other hand, seemed has not recovered from his previous match against PG, looked tired and drowsy as fastdrop who was in the stadium confirmed. LCW did not make a single smash but relied on his precise placements, deceptive dropshots, wonderful lobs, patient rallies and anticipated most of the shots by CJ to secure the 1st game. LCW started to make a few smashes in the 2nd game. Whenever CJ played some seemingly unreturnable shots, LCW had better answers. It frustrated CJ and CJ was just smiling and shaking his head in many occasions. In the 2nd game while trailing far behind, CJ showed some signal of back injuries. He squatted after each point and everybody thought he would have retired since then but he continued to finish the match. LCW sealed the match 21-8 21-8 in just 32 mins. Frankly, even CJ was not tired and injured, LCW could have still beaten him convincingly. LCW was incredible and almost flawless. Another solid performance by LCW.
I hope this will give those who didn't watch the match a rough idea on how LCW beat CJ.

pjswift 11-04-2007, 03:29 AM Then how slow was Chen Jin??? Was he like much worse, because that's what the score-line suggested... At the same time, if LCW wasn't suffering from knee pain, then I guess Chen Jin would have lost with a lower score???
Let me give you my take based on what I saw on TV (which you obviously did not have the chance to).
CJ started off brightly but LCW did not play his normal attacking game because of his LEFT (not the RIGHT which has the standard white tape) knee inflammation(quite extensively taped). That was the problem.CJ had not done his video homework because there was none.LCW's physical speed was slow (as in it's not his usual weapon) but what he lost ,he compensated incredibly with mental speed (as in taking shots faster like fastdrop said). As a result, his tactics were amazing and he was controlling CJ.CJ had to run all over the court, including some twists and turns, which probably caused some injury. In G2, CJ was clearly injured but true to the sportsmanship that he's known for, he chose to play the match to its normal conclusion(same as LCW in his SF vs BCL) rather than the easier, understandable option of retiring.LCW was also in a difficult position, playing a clearly injured opponent.Should he continue to be ruthless and end CJ's misery quickly or should he give CJ some redeeming points? LCW gave CJ some points before speeding up the end.The last point was, as alfa said,a lobbing practice. It went on until CJ got the hint and hit out.
If LCW were utterly ruthless, the score for G2 would have been 21-2.
I feel sorry for CJ. He was totally lost and may take some time to get his confidence back.I hope he won't be drawn against LCW for a while. May he rest well and recover properly from his injury, both physically and mentally.

i disagree with your view that the line judges were out to help Pi win. ZN's behaviour was disgusting. You could tell ,in her mind , she believed that the line judges are going to be biased against her. That might be expected in CHN, HKO and MCO which she is fully aware of.She was busy playing line judge inspector and at one point, seemingly intimidating one.Who did she think she was? Behaving like the Queen of the court? Why didn't the umpire give her a yellow card for her obnoxious display?
The line judging and umpiring were unbiased. Just because ZN questioned a line call did not mean she's right. What is right is she's not simple.
PI played very well, helped by the home crowd, rather than the line judges.ZN lost because her mind was not on the game; she expected to lose and she was looking for an excuse for her loss.
Inky2000 11-04-2007, 04:00 AM CJ started off brightly but LCW did not play his normal attacking game because of his LEFT (not the RIGHT which has the standard white tape) knee inflammation(quite extensively taped). That means LCW may have injured but it was compensated by his clever game play. Let's see if he is able to overcome this disadvantage yet again when he faces the fitter (but probably relatively more tired due to yesterday's 3-game match) BCL.

Very true...I feel sad for him too:( CJ is one of the players that I admire....it was a little heartbreaking to see him like he was yesterday:( I do hope that his injury is not really serious and for him to have a speedy recovery:o However, I cannot deny that I'm happy to see LCW in the finals:)
