View Full Version : China Open Super Series Draw

Its out...

Bad draw for MS:
Bao Chunlai vs Taufik Hidayat -- Taufik faces his nemesis and I don't think he can beat Bao in Guangzhou.

Simon Santoso vs Peter Gade -- unlucky Simon, but, he can beat Peter as we saw in Denmark Open.

Wong Choong Hann vs Sony Dwi Kuncoro -- a tough opening match for Sony. If he wins, he will face possibly Lee Hyun Il for a place in QF where Lee Chong Wei (yet again) will await him.

Bad draw for MD yet again:
Hendra A. Gunawan/Joko Riyadi vs Tony Gunawan/Candra Wijaya -- AG/Joko have to face another early exit  I think they need to raise their ranking up to 8 in order to avoid all these bad draws.

Luluk Hadiyanto/Alvent Yulianto vs Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen -- likewise, Luluk/Alvent could go out as early as in R32.

Q3 vs Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan -- Q3 is likely to be Songphon Anugritayawon/Tesana Panvisvas. Kido/Hendra avoid Koo/Tan, but, they have Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun, Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen, and Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji Man in the bottom half. Oh, not to mention giant killer like Tadashi Ohtsuka/Keita Masuda  The opponent in R16 is either Tan Bin Shen/Ong Soon Hock or Rasmus Andersen/Peter Steffensen.

Reasonable draw for WD:
Kamilla Augustyn/Nadiezda Kostiucyzk vs Rani Mundiasti/Endang Nur Sugianti -- a tricky draw for Rani/Endang. The winner will face the top-seed Wei Yili/Zhang Yawen in R32.

Q2 vs Vita Marissa/Lilyana Natsir -- Vita/Butet will face Wong Pei Tty/Chin Ee Hui in R16...expect an explosive match! The winner will entertain possibly the fourth seed Chien Yu-Chin/Cheng Wen-Hsing.

Jo Novita/Greysia Polii vs Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen -- sigh...another Chinese pair in R32...bye bye.

Bad draw also for XD:
Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa vs Han Sang Hoon/Lee Hyo Jung -- Flandy/Vita face a formidable foe in Han Sang Hoon/Lee Hyo Jung in R32. The winner of the match will face either the recently crowned World Junior Champion, Lim Khim Wah/Mak Hee Chun or Yoo Yeon Seong/Kim Min Jung.

Jens Eriksen/Helle Nielsen vs Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir -- the World Champion is off-form and their draw is not too bad, with Chen Hong Ling/Chou Chia-Chi possibly the opponent in R16. However, if Flandy/Vita could clear the first 2 rounds, then the two INA pairs will fight one another for a place in the last 4.

First round,....MS.....LCW VS Boonsak.....tough
TH VS BCL .........tough
Simon VS PG ..........tough

All this tough matches ...makes the tounament exciting...

MS draw bottom-half heavy, a big test for LCW.

11-06-2007, 04:49 AM
Flandy Limpele/Vita Marissa vs Han Sang Hoon/Lee Hyo Jung -- Flandy/Vita face a formidable foe in Han Sang Hoon/Lee Hyo Jung in R32. The winner of the match will face either the recently crowned World Junior Champion, Lim Khim Wah/Mak Hee Chun or Yoo Yeon Seong/Kim Min Jung.

Lim Khim Wah/Mak Hee Chun cannot play in the XD event. The Koreans are stronger but for Vita/Flandy, their 1st round is much harder, 2nd round is a breeze.

Bad draw for MAS MD, Koo/Tan will probably square off with Choong/Lee at q-finals. Fairuz/Zakry had to make 1st round date against the French Open winners, surely an early exit for them .....

In WS, Wong Mew Choo may face Pi Hongyan/Eriko Hirose in 2nd round, if she passes, Zhu Lin or Zhou Mi is waiting. Julia will face Jiang Yanjiao after a long absence in the Super Series tour.

In WD, Wong/Chin expected to square off with Lilyana/Vita. They can only win if Chin's back holds, and that too is a big IF .....

MS is pretty reasonable draw for LCW (despite drawing Boonsak), but he might meet WCH or Sony in the q-finals. Hafiz will be slaughtered by Lin Dan as usual .....

That is provided LCW is taking part. He might rest his knee and opt out either China or Hong Kong SS. Logically he should be skipping China SS since it's earlier, less time for his knee to heal.

Chong Wei, however, may opt to compete in only one of the last two rounds of the Super Series in China (Nov 20-25) and Hong Kong (Nov 27-Dec 2).
“I still need time to recover. It may be wise for me to play in one tournament. I will discuss this with my coach,” he said.

I think it would be better for LCW to skip the China Open and concentrate on the Hong Kong Open.

Zakry, Fairuz, TBinShen/OngSC are competing in China and Hong Kong Open. They passed the selection trials. Gan/Lin lost both matches in selection so they wont get to go for these 2 SS.
Rexy started selection trials for SS. KKK/TBH and CTF/LWW get automatic places cos their world ranking is highest. But if they do badly, they also have to go for selection. SO far, they did ok - winner Denmark, runner-up France.

Gan/Lin are sent to Vietnam Open and SEA Games (early Dec).

I remember Kido-Hendra was the best MD on Earth for a couple of months leading up to the 2006 Asian Games [very late in 2006]... that's when we all saw the amazing rise of KKK-TBH... Now the world MD is really up for grabs... Maybe only DEN is declining here... MAS, CHN, and INA all have good chances to grab the 2008 Olympic Gold...

Yet, neither MAS, INA or CHN top pairs are consistent enough to be a clear leader. But at least MAS and INA had the benefit of their aged pairs' 2nd wind.

Wish Kido/Setiawan can bring their 1st SS title from this tournament to prove their world champ status. Last year, they were so superb in China -- winner of China Open, Hongkong Open and Invitational World Cup. No doubt, world #1 KKK/TBH is the hardest opponent for them en route to defend the title!

Based on drawing CHN will represented by their primary and new talent players in all division. Seems the Great Wall has top ambition, once again eager to realize clean-sweep here after failed in Cheng Du last July that unpredictable INA stole WD title. Who will stop China brigade this time? MD as CHN weakest sector opens big opportunity for others to grab it.

Chong Wei puts on his thinking cap

Tuesday November 6, 2007

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Lee Chong Wei has made it clear to his rivals that he is serious in wanting to strive for consistently good performance on the international arena by winning the French Open in commanding fashion in Paris on Sunday.

The world number two crushed China's Bao Chunlai 21-11, 21-14 to win his third title in the Super Series.

He did not drop a game en route to winning the title, though his matches were anything but easy.

A case in point was Chong Wei’s semi-final against Chen Jin of China. The Malaysian won 21-8, 21-8 but the scoreline didn’t reflect the energy-sapping duel – Chen Jin had to be treated for cramps after the match.
It was remarkable for Chong Wei to chalk up the Paris success, considering that he was suffering from an injured knee.

He had fallen during training prior to the Danish Open in the preceding week and aggravated the injury in the semi-final loss to Chunlai in Odense.
For Chong Wei, who turned 25 on Oct 21, the French Open success was a belated birthday gift.

“My knee problem affected my physical condition. But I won this week on skill and tactical play. I was quicker in attacks and I was able to read my opponents' game well,” said Chong Wei in a telephone interview from Paris before leaving for home yesterday.

“Personally, this was one of my best weeks this year. I applied different strategies and it worked well for me. I have to thank the NSC (National Sports Council) medical team for their help, too. I had contemplated withdrawing from the French Open but I was well taken care of.”

Coach Misbun Sidek said that Chong Wei had taken his game to a different level.

“Despite his condition, he believes in his ability. This time he showed that he was a thinking player. I was impressed with the way he won his matches. Their opponents did not know how to react to his different style of play,” said Misbun.
“He got his revenge over two Indonesian players (Sony Dwi Kuncoro at the Danish Open and Simon Santoso at the French Open). And in a space of a week, he avenged his defeat to Chunlai. Barring any injuries, Malaysia can look forward to more good showing from him.”

Chong Wei should do the wise thing that's not to promise too much hence putting unnecessary pressure to himself. Men's singles is the most fiercely contested event among all and on any given day, any top 15 players are capable to toppling one another. I am just happy if Chong Wei can be consistent and advance to semi final on all tournaments then go from there. Putting such a high hope to fan and imagine fail in early round on coming Super Series is really asking for trouble.

The host of the invitational event is actually Foshan, not Guangzhou, although the two cities are only 30+km apart. The Foshan district was the hometown of Wong Fei Hong, Bruce Lee and renowned reformist (in late Qing Dynasty) Kang Youwei. Quite a charming little city.

Foshan China??? :D:D:D
so our Wong Choon Hann can display , Wong Fei Hong
" Foshan no shadow kick" and Lee Chong Wei can use
Bruce Lee "Jit Kuen Do" sure win!!!!!!!!:D:D:D

Don't forget Japan. They havent won strings of titles but KKK/TBH and other Malaysian pairs have been beaten by them in important events.

It's all about timing! Regardless how good individual/pair is, when Olympic comes, the player that plays the best will win, not necessary the best player!

Lee Chong Wei is now beginning to feel good about himself - he has mastered his flaws.

If you guys have observed his matches lately, you would have seen a new confidence; less mistakes with his smashes (mostly 'in'); his defence has improved with better cross court returns; pushing deep backline shots that forced opponents to retrieve hurriedly often badly, and his net shots which often allowed him to tap home winners.

We can draw from this that he is now almost invincible -- only LD is a danger to LCW. So far, they have avoided playing each other in the last few tournaments. I am dying to see both in the finals of the China Open. It would show me how far LCW has come in terms of matching LD. Personally, I think LD will find it hard to beat LCW today.

Patience, Xball, patience. LCW is still recovering from his knee injury. You might have to wait a while longer if he doesnt go for China Open.
Remember he was grimacing throughout his match with Bao in France, esp after doing a jumping smash?

For MK/Hendra...Cai/Fu are easier than KK/TBH

As for KKK/TBH, MK/Hendra and probably even Cai/Fu are easier than CTF/LWW. With the oldies around, I am not even sure that KKK/TBH can pass through the q-finals. Unless the aged Malaysians energy levels drop significantly in the 2nd half of 3rd game, like Macao GP and S'pore Super Series finals.

Not sure about warming up but LD can benefit from a practice match against LCW's new tactics before the more important CO.But who knows LCW may be naughty and stick to old game or not make it to finals.

Poor Zhao TingTing. She always change her partner. I think this is the fourth time she change the partner, Yang Wei, Yu Yang, Gao Ling. Forgot one name she paired before Yang Wei. I have no idea what is in LYB's mind with ZTT. I think she is not bad for WD or XD player, but I think she can not break through No.1 in the world.
Huang Sui probably retire after badminton is not her 1st priority... I am not sure about it... But, she only played in few SS tournaments and absent in 2 last SS....

Think on the positive side, Zhao Tingting is considered very lucky as the Chinese coaching staff is still trying to pair her up with someone very good. Remember how Zhang Jiewen was treated when they split her up? Partnering with Gao Ling is better than anyone else unless Zhao can't take the lecture from Gao Ling.

As I said, I think any of the top players, including TH, still have a chance to win the Olympic title.

We still have more than 10 months to go and it really depends on who peaks at the right time. And it now boils down to how they strategize or plan their training schedule to peak at the right time during the BO.

So even if some of them will not win any major titles along the way to the BO, it really should not be of great concern, so long as they remain at the apex. :)

He can raise his ranking just be attending every tournament. Just check out the most recent ranking, he is No. 6 now. Sony No. 7 and Simon No. 10. So on the other hand TH really has pressure to play as many tournament as possible, otherwise he may lose his OG spot.

So we cannot really judge TH's form according to his recent record. This very unfit guy is playing as many (if not more) tournaments than the very fit LD and LCW. So it's natural that he cannot recover from fatigue and got knocked out early.

After May 1 2008, TH can have 3 months of "tournament-free" time. Can he boost his stamina before OG? Let's wait and see.

Either he or Sony Dwi Kuncoro might creep up to no 4 by the Olympics to get himself a favorable seeding and avoid the top guns at least before the SF. Peter Gade will lose a lot of points from the Malaysia Open Super Series, while Chen Jin could also lose the points from Swiss Open Super Series.

Poor Simon Santoso, unless he can rise up above either Sony or Taufik, he will not qualify for the Olympics despite his top 10 ranking. The same thing might apply for Chen Yu and Chen Hong.

The possible qualifiers as of today (38 in total, including 2 invited players):
China (3): Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai, and possibly Chen Jin
Malaysia (2): Lee Chong Wei, either Wong Choong Hann, Lee Tsuen Tseng or Mohd Hafiz Hashim

I think it would be better for LCW to skip the China Open and concentrate on the Hong Kong Open.

my day 1 predictions here:

An unusually large amount of mouth watering matches litter the opening day of the China Open.

Wang Chen vs. Saina Nehwal
Both players put on unconvincing performances in the European circuit. Wang got eliminated by Malaysian Wong Mew Choo in the first round in Paris while the young Nehwal experienced a shock defeat in the hands of a lesser known opponent in the quarterfinals of the Vietnam Open. Wang's efficient and elegant footwork and her deceptive play will certainly put Nehwal in a difficult position. Although talented, Nehwal still lacks the grace and skill of the Chinese veterans. Given that Wang's prior injury will not affect her game, she should take this in 2 sets.

Julia Meulendijk vs. Zhu Lin
On paper the young Chinese appears to be a clear favorite for this match. However, world champion Zhu appears to be going through a slump in her career, with defeats to Chinese second stringer Lu Lan in Odsense and Ella Dhiel in Paris. Julia can be a lethal player at times, but this match will fall circumstantially; if Zhu is performing at her best, she will take this match in 2 sets. If however, she continues being inconsistent, she will break the home crowd's heart, and continue her horrendous run.

My analysis:

Men's Singles
With the withdrawal of Olympic Champion Taufik Hidayat, the two clear favorites of the Men's Singles are top seed and World Champion Lin Dan and the second seeded Lee Chong Wei. Dark horses Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin will attempt to sneak in and steal the title, but I think ultimately the victor will be one of Lin or Lee. Lee has been in superb form lately, winning the French Open and displaying his newfound patient ala Morten Frost style of playing, which was his knee injury's blessing in disguise. On the other hand, Lin Dan has recorded a rare shock loss in the semifinals of the French Open to compatriot Bao Chunlai. However, Lin Dan has never been known to dwell excessively on a minor hiccup, and I believe he will be the main contender for his home ground title. Lee will do his best to upstage him, and the anticipated Lin vs. Lee finals could very well go either way.
