Badminton BC will sponsor BC players wishing to play in the National Open Championships by rebating $60 per player of the $125 entry fee.:D:D:D

Players interested in playing in the National Open (January 31 to February 2 at ClearTwo in Richmond) must register and actually play in the tournament to receive the funding.:p:p:p

Here's some from the finals. Nothing fancy but an old point and shoot Canon. There's not much room to move around to take shots either.

They're fairly self descriptive if you look at the tournament results.

Was it an awesome event?
Please let us know what you think so that we can make it better next time?

How did you know about this event?
Did you watch the media event - Channel 13 - Breakfast TV on Thursday Morning?
Did you watch news clips from Fairchild TV or any local TV news?
Newspapers - Province/Sun and Chinese Newspapers - ie Ming Pao etc..?
Were you there Thursday / Friday / Saturday or all three days?
Were you there as a Volunteer / Player / Coaches / Umpires / Players Parents / Friend / Super Fans / Badminton Lovers?
Any pics and vids?
Did you know that Kim Dong Moon was there?

It was an awesome experince for me.
I got the chance to work with and have tremendous support and guidance from the referees and the umpires.
I also have termendous support from Kyle Hunter of Badminton Canada.
I was also surrounded by hard working and experienced volunteers.
Its was my first time to see and meet the best National players.
Here are some of the pics that I took.

Really? I focussed on the games mainly and didn't pay too much attention to who was beside me but then you must be either:

a) My wife (hey I didn't know you are here on BC too!)
b) A 30-50 year old oriental lady.
c) A 40-50 year old oriental man.
d) An invisible ghost.

Hey, all badminton tournaments are awesome events ! :)

How did you know about this event?
- First, from the posting here on Badminton Central.

Did you watch the media event - Channel 13 - Breakfast TV on Thursday Morning?
- No, didn't even know it was going on and I work in the morning.

Did you watch news clips from Fairchild TV or any local TV news?
- No, if I knew ahead, I would have went out of my way to watch it or record it.

Newspapers - Province/Sun and Chinese Newspapers - ie Ming Pao etc..?
- No, but if I had known I'd have dug it up.

Were you there Thursday / Friday / Saturday or all three days?
- I would have wanted to attend them all but work gets in the way. Thursday 6pm, Saturday all day.

Were you there as a Volunteer / Player / Coaches / Umpires / Players Parents / Friend / Super Fans / Badminton Lovers?
- Super fans/Badminton Lovers

Any pics and vids?
- Posted some of over 150 I took. No vids. My camera wouldn't have enough angle where I was sitting.

Did you know that Kim Dong Moon was there?
- No. Wow, who else?

Overall, it was a great event for me as a spectator. Being able to see right up close some of the top national players is always a treat. Everything from our point of view seemed to run smoothly.

Here's some of my suggestions.

- Some longer breaks for between the matches. During the finals, it was a long haul. Some people around us didn't know if there were longer breaks and were getting hungry (we ate big before and brought snacks and drinks).

- Directions to legal parking and/or reserve some parking for the event from neighbouring businesses. We arrived early so we were lucky to get one of the last spots.

- Sound system was a bit boomy. I could barely tell what was being announced sometimes.

- We weren't offered and I didn't see any program/schedule. (We were probably in the first dozen spectators or possibly even the first 6 if some I suspect were family and friends of the players.)

- I'm not sure how this would affect players and such but for a spectator, if the days leading up to the final were pushed later into the day (let's say 9pm?) I would have attended more but I was unable due to work.

- For the sake of people who are not accustomed to being in a badminton court, it might be good to suggest people to dress warmly. I knew so we dressed in coats. Some others in stands I could see were getting a bit chilly.

That's about it. Great event. I hope to be able to see more like this soon.

I certainly thought it was!

How did you know about this event?
I read about it here on BC Forum and heard about it from other baddy players.

No on all counts. I saw the news crew there on Thursday, but that was about it.

Were you there Thursday / Friday / Saturday or all three days?
Yup! I took a couple days off work to be able to catch the games.

Were you there as a Volunteer / Player / Coaches / Umpires / Players Parents / Friend / Super Fans / Badminton Lovers?
Hmm... badminton lover, I suppose.

Any pics and vids?
I have vids that I will post on YouTube. I'm working on editing them now and will post what I have over the next few days.

Did you know that Kim Dong Moon was there?
Yep! A buddy of mine even found the nerve to go up to him and got his picture taken with him.

I thought it was very cool of him to give your son some impromptu coaching after one of the matches he played, too.

I've finally finished posting the vids I took at the Nationals onto YouTube. I'll post the links in the Badminton Video Sharing section later tonight. Or if any of you are feeling fairly motivated, you can try searching them out on your own for now.

Manitoba player who won the National Junior title in 2007. He totally earned his National title this year, IMHO, against all those seeds. He's an awesome player!

BTW, I've posted links to the games I recorded in the Badminton Tournament Video Sharing section, under the title 2008 Canadian National Championships.
